I was thinking of lifting a number of boards in the through lounge and maybe get one of those cameras down to really see the extent of it. I think I will probably have to take up about the same area as your job. Then get someone in to spray under remaining area.
Nice video and good edit - good job. I was expecting you'd need to pack up the new floorboards to bring their tops level with the old ones, but it looked as if you managed to get new boards the same thickness as the old 1" imperial ones.
My floorboards are the same and trying to get the council to do anything is like trying get blood out of a stone !! .. How much am I looking at for replacing just the boards for a small bathroom? Half was replaced when the wet floor came out but they wouldn’t replace the rest . After years Of leaks they are absolutely rancid and can’t get rid of the smell.. I have a fans on constant more or less trying to dry them out after trying every thing to clean and get rid of the smell it’s made them rot more . There about 100 year old !
Hi. It's really hard to price without looking at it. If they have to take toilet sink and bath out to get to them it could be quite expensive. And you would not know it the joists are damaged with out taking a few up. So can be really tricky to price. The best thnk to do is get some one out that can have a look and give a price. At least 2 to 3 quotes go give you an idea. Sorry I can't help more 👍👍👍👍
Hi mate Yere the customer did not what to go that far with it. They on a budget. So did the best we could. I would have liked to take the hole lot up. We unblock the air bricks witch was causing most of it 👍👍👍
Hi. Thanks for this video. I am about to start with the same kind of work. Just a question do you nail or bolt the old joist to the new joist over the sleeper wall. Or you just rely on the floorboards to hold them in place on that side?
Great video 👍 my living room floor boards and joists are bouncy and I would guess will need replacing. The house is a 2 up 2 down terrace and the kitchen is a concrete solid floor. The vents have been blocked to the living room floor by previous owners. Would you say it's better to get the living room concreted as well or replace the joist/boards? Unsure about ventilation all the way through with the kitchen being concrete floor
Hi Andy depending on how much money you have really. If you concrete you will have a lot of filling to do To get it level. But you could add Kingspan insulation to bring it up and keep it warmer. The cheaper option would be to Re do the floor in wood. But you would need the ventilation. I think the concrete would work out more expensive but if you did it right it would keep the house warmer 👍

I think the vent on the kitchen side is pretty much redundant with it being a concrete floor in there. I live on a gable end so possibly vent the side of the house? Or do the vents have to be front to back?
@@markhep be great if it was piped doubt it though with the previous owners. I checked I actually have a couple of floor vents on the gable end so that's 2 front and 2 sides
Arent you supposed to wrap any parts of the wood that come in contact with brick and mortar in a DPC to stop rot? Thats what my builder and a damp proofing company has told me to do when i replace my joists
I just make sure the damp is under neath them. I got told by a inspector not to wrap them as they can sweat and cause rot. Not sure how true that is. I know a few builders that still wrap them and they are fine 👍👍👍
Found your video as i am about to embark on a similar job on my home. Been stripping walls back to brick to try to resolve some damp issues and discovered ends of joist's are rotten. Luckily as with your job there is a wall in the middle of the room supporting the joists so just need to replace the rotten side. My issue is how to treat the end of the timbers going into the damp wall. Ive seen people simply wrap ends with dpc or use plastic end caps, i was thinking of giving the ends a good coat of bitumen paint any suggestions?. Once the floor is lifted i will be dealing with a major issue causing the damp and removing a lot of wet soil from beneath the floor. I will also be addressing the issue of poor drainage outside causing water to puddle against the exterior of the affected wall.
Hi mate the problem with this job was they had blocked the air bricks up once we sorted the air flow it dried the floor below the joists. If you use dpc or plasitc just put it under the joists. I got told if you wrap it round. It sweats and you get rot again. Hope this helps 👍👍👍I also bought treated joists 👍
Really interesting video - thanks guys. Out of interest, I've had to take some of our (1st floor) floorboards off recently and they were nailed down VERY securely. I can see the advantage of using screws - is this more common than nails these days? And do you make pilot holes?
Hi mate. They do still nail them in some houses. But the come loose eventually and your boards squeak. I always screw them. Then I not going back a few years later to fix them. I don't do pilot holes in. But you Could if you wanted to. I just use the more expensive screw they go strait in spax is a grate make of screw👍👍👍only time I nail is if the floor is finished and getting stained or something 👍

Hi its the same sort of thing. Just cut your boards the full length of were the joists need to be. With out hitting pipes or electric work. Then cut a slot out of the wall to slide it in of. Or if you can not slide it in you can bolt joist hangers onto the wall.you may have problems if there is pipe work in the way. As you may need to move or cut the pipe. Same with electrical work. Hi mate I used 4in screws to hold them together. It pulled them together nicely and made leveling them a bit easier 👍👍👍

@@andyjardine8192 you could have the vents any side. It could piped through the kitchen if you lucky. The vents could go anywere you could get them 👍

It's awful when it does make sure you got plenty of air flow under floor. That's usually the biggest problem that and damp 👍👍👍

Not sure maybe there was water dripping of the under side of joists but that may have been with flood 👍👍👍
No such thing as dry rot. Water and funds are the cause of all rot

Yes mate the air vents. Had been blocked up with silicone. Probably a long long time ago. We unblocked them all when we changed the floor 👍
