    I'd like to thank everyone again for all the suggestions / feedback.     I’d love to see a mod less extreme. Like bonfires like Dark Souls. Restarting the whole game is too punishing imo. But Half Life with 10-20 minute stretches without checkpoints would be great.

    The mod Hard Life has a checkpoint system with new wall chargers that use armor points for each save. Might be worth looking at what they did for ideas.

    Add 3 second delay between death and returning to level 1, so you can see yourself die and THEN restart the game.
    I feel like having any checkpoints at all defeats the purpose. But if that's too hard, I suppose that could be displaced into its own difficulty level, above hardcore.

      Yeah I know it looks a bit cringe that you immediately restart without seeing yourself die but that was due to the code limitations unfortunately. I'm working a solution to that so stay tuned in the future!
      As for the checkpoints, I want to make that configurable so everyone can decide what kind of challenge they are looking for. :)

    - Fixed med stations as bonfires like DS
    - weak player, relatively weak enemies
    - scarce ammo
    Honestly the idea of Half Life works better if it's a harrowing ordeal and less of a power fantasy. Good work!

    Woah, great editing and great mod! I'm not a huge fan of restarting the whole game (i'm more into rougelikes), but this is still awesome!

    random mob numbers (0-x in each area, with tied ammo drops to compensate), a hades-like level up system (each time you level you get to pick from 3 upgrades...i wouldnt make them as powerful as hades' bonuses though), randomized gun placement, randomly have health machines be broken, booby trapped grenades where after you pick it up you hear a ticking or beeping and if you dont throw it in time you blow up....idk a bunch of stuff

      having to play the whole 6 hour experience over and over after you die is painful, you'd want it to be a little different each time, anybody playing half-life mods has played the base game, probably to death, so something new wouldn't hurt it. just don't turn it into a brand new game with new level design, just tweak some things

    one thing that definitely doesn't help the insanity, is the fact that the playthroughs are the same every playthrough
    dying to that one stupid thing further in the game, and having to replay the exact same thing you've already played hundreds of times just to potentially die to some other stupid thing, ad infinitum definitely becomes unfun fairly quickly
    if there was any amount of variation in maps or enemies per playthrough to spice things up and keep you on your toes, it would certainly be more engaging-
    or even if there were just more different ways to play through the same maps (like those powerups you mentioned, could bring that sort of much-needed variety if executed correctly)
    obviously, all much easier said than done, this is all from a game designer perspective rather than a coding one - i've dabbled in modding and worked on a few games before so i know how ball-smackingly hard all of it is to pull off

      Yeah that’s how I felt. It was fun playing in small chunks but it gets really frustrating after a while. As you said some randomness would help with that I think. I’m trying to implement the power-ups at the moment but not much luck so far haha but I won’t give up!

    ARGHH I just played the mod and got to power up. was playing for maybe 30 minutes at this point and man the HECU soldiers are WAY more menacing on hardcore. Normally i just blow through them with no care in the world but now I have to actually work against them, I need to actually strategize when fighting them instead of "ok ill just run in like normal with the shotgun smg combo."
    That 30 minutes was really fun though and I will definitely play more of this mod! Really fun idea! Thanks for making this!

    I really like the idea of this but I think you could change it up a bit. Like maybe have it save at the beginning of each level, or at just some arbitrary point, like every quarter of the way through the story you get a save, but having it so everytime you die theres some punishment: start with half or 25% health, or maybe half your ammo. Something like that, but playing the entire game over everytime you die is a bit tedious. Also maybe making a single difficulty that is more extreme than hard mode. This is a really cool idea though, good video

      I completely agree with it being tedious! I mostly wanted this video to be like a "0.1" version where I had an idea but it's still quite rudimentary.

    To be honest, the only thing I'd fix in it is that when you die, you don't instantly teleport back to the before the incident part, but at least the death screen (before you click to load last safe) should be still there lel

    So as to not break the immersion of the game, I would add a little difficulty increase quirk into most enemies.
    1. Make a variation of the soldiers which are more accurate/have better weapons but not as deadly as the assassins
    OR
    2. Spawn in assassins along the squads sometimes (not sure if its worth to do this through code instead of manually looking through all spawnpoints on all maps)
    3. Headcrabs have the variations from Half Life 2
    4. Certain Vortigaunts have chain lighting (bounces off from NPCs and maybe certain objects as well that are maybe metallic?)
    5. Bullsquid has another variation that has poisoned attacks and makes your shots less accurate
    6. Ichthyosaur can pull you in like a barnacle from a relatively short distance in case you are swimming away from it
    7. A new variation of Houndeyes that can cannibalize their fallen kin to restore its HP. It has more hp and is faster too
    8. Leeches can follow you on land but relatively slowly and sticking to the ground
    9. Gargantuan can shoot a slowing beam from its eye to catch up with you, unless you shoot it in the eye when its being charged (its limited how often as this would make it too hardcore imo)
    10. Certain barnacles have spikes(? ) on their tongues which damages the player to a certain degree, even if not fully reeled in
    11. Alien controller variation, that spawns in alient grunts until killed and has higher hp (the teleport is not necessarily instant)
    12. Alien grunts with heavy armor that have weakspots OR simply take a lot more punishment AND/OR more resistant to small arms fire and more vulnerable to revolvers and such

      Holy cow, these are all sick ideas, thanks dude! I feel like some of these might exceed my modding knowledge atm but some of them I could implement straight away I think:

    I'm definitely gonna give this a try! (I'm going to go insane) An idea would be putting more enemies in empty rooms? Or deleting the HEV and Health stations, so you can use only the things on the ground.

      I think you might be onto something here haha!
      I like the extra enemies idea but we might have to tweak the HPs or add some extra ammo pickups because some enemies have a shitload of HP on Hard (Bullsquid)

      The HP/Armor station is a nice one, true hardcore experience lol

    If you wanted to add difficulty and fear into the play through what about if you die you start over on half-life 1 source, now there's a punishment that would make you quit

    It would be even more fun if there was a Stalker-level of difficulty. Enemies dies in 2-3 hits, but you also die in 2-3 hits. That would make the game even more hardcore. No headcrab should withstand 3 9mm shots.

      Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve been thinking about this too! I’m working on this mod in the background but don’t have as much time for it as I want honestly.     interesting idea but i feel the vanilla half life gameplay is too easy for the "hardcore" adjective, even on hard.

      @@guncanny yeah I have hundreds of hours on the Sven Coop mod which is often much harder. When doing a vanilla playthrough i don't feel like I'm at risk of dying at all, I don't bother to save.
      Don't get me wrong this is definitely a punishing mod to someone with a more normal playtime but should you feel like challenging veterans as well, I would suggest bumping up things like enemy reaction time, speed, attack rate and/or damage (but not health, that tends to be tedious). Oh and congrats on getting a mod out

      @@HamidKarzai Thanks for that, I really appreciate it. It's nice to see how a more "veteran" player sees this whole thing. I'm more of a "casual player" in this sense.

    Can this be made to work with the Half-Life: They Hunger horror mod; and in VR, too, where you can still read the death count without it being unintentionally out of view?

      This sounds like a nice recipe haha. I think it should be possible yeah, I don't have a VR set to test it though unfortunately.
      But I'll give the They Hunger mod a look over the weekend and see if I can implement it!

    Cool but so punishing, considered hard is forced. Making it a lil more oldschool by having checkpoints at each "level," or chapter would be pretty good and not so maddening. Or some kind of save mod akin to Resident Evil's ink cartridges where you only have a set amount of times to save.

    This is definitely interesting however I gotta ask what if I can only play for an hour or so? Wouldn't that mean I have to restart everytime I quit ? Some people won't just blast through black mesa like flash , I think a system like minecraft hardcore could work at the start of each chapter you get a checkpoint in case you will continue later if you die pre ambush in apprehension you restart from unforeseen consequences , if you die after ambush you respawn in residue processing and that check point in start of xen these 3 checkpoints should do I think the game would be much harder if certain enemies are harder to fight such as human grunts with +20 HP and mp5 with 11 dmg or alien slaves with 80 health instead of 60 personally I play with these changed settings wonder how hard its gonna be if we mix that with this it will definitely be very hard in chapters with HECU present but I think its better to just polish the mod enough like fix any bugs have the player with proper equipment if he dies etc so far a promising and interesting idea.

      Yes you make a valid point and thanks for your feedback! I'm already working a new version where you could configure the amount of checkpoints to your liking. :)
      I'm not yet sure if just increasing HP/damage is enough, it might just become more "tedious" so I'm thinking about making it more challenging somehow without increasing HP for now.

      Oh I just realised you wrote more, sorry! "have the player with proper equipment if he dies" -- This one I'm still working on, because saving the game is actually quite painful in a mod as far as I understand. So maybe loading a checkpoint with a pre-defined set of equipment is a way to go... not sure. Let me know if you have any other ideas! I really appreciate your feedback my dude.

      Yeah that's what I did initially but this seemed like a more sophistaced approach.
      Also, this is more like a "0.1" version of this whole mod thing, I'm planning to improve it going forward.
      I received some brilliant suggestions from the comments that I'm going to implement (at some point). :)

      @@guncanny yeah I got you, this is way more sophisticated indeed! Good job. I challenge myself with no damage playthroughs ( basically 1 hp playthrough ) because I have no idea how to mod the game. Good for you that you learned 👍

      Sounds like an even tougher challenge than this one haha.
      This sounds like something I could implement in this mod in the future as an "extreme" setting. :) 1HP, no pickups.

      You make a fair point, I think it was somewhat on purpose to make a more “slow paced” shooter since you play as a scientist who’s not necessarily a killing machine (lol).
      But yeah nostalgia adds a lot to Half-Life for me so if you missed it as a kid it might be a different experience.
