Opposing Forces and Blue Shift are as much a part of the Black Mesa experience as the original Half-Life. The best part is they were made by outside teams, but feel so true to the material they are a part of.
8:46 Ngl, I’d seriously love confirmation of those two surviving. Like HL3 and it turns out Otis is still with his mom, she figured out a way to cook headcrabs, and the other guy is just like “Well, for once i’m glad you still live with her.”
I actually used to play on a server with the VA of Otis, it was an in development Gmod Black mesa roleplay server, guy was chill but apparently did some stuff in the past that got him banned and some people didn't like him anyway.
I remember I went to Joel Nielsen (creator of BMS ost) in Discord and asked him if he can bless music composer of this mod. Joel told me some blessing (may the gods of sounds blah-blah etc) and I delivered it right to the guy. Seems like it worked after all.
Something I really wish was present in Blue Shift (original and fan remake) is an experimental weapon you’d unlock after finding the old lab. For one of my two ideas you’d have a Tesla Coil that can chain enemies and objects together with lightning (doesn’t really do anything to Vortigaunts), and for the other it would basically be like a laser sniper that fires a continuous beam (basically the Focus Rifle in Halo Reach, except not garbage). The way both hypothetical guns would work is you never reload them, but they’ll frequently overheat like plasma/energy weapons in Halo. You’d also collect ammo by picking up those batteries and using HEV chargers throughout the facility. Either or both of those would’ve greatly enhanced the expansion, and added an interesting spin to the gameplay.
I had always thought of Blue-Shift as the best let-down I ever played. I was quite blown away by Opposing Force; it was a full-sized game and not just an expansion. I went into Blue-Shift expecting it to be on par with that. And then, not to far from the beginning, the game ended. I was let down. This was just a short expansion, nowhere near the scope of the other titles that came with the Platinum Pack. But then I thought for a moment and looked back. IT was short, yet, but I had a simply fantastic time playing it. It was really fun, a lot more fun than most expansions I've played. It was a let-down, but it was the BEST let-down I've ever played!
I truly loved what Crowbar Collective did with Black Mesa. So much is recognisable, and yet so very new. With Blue Shift, the original felt improved in some regards but the story and experience seemed flat and didn't exceed Half Life's original plot. Now the new Black Mesa Blue Shift feels so much more epic, with Captive Freight having such a massive scale, with combat that feels more intense than a Hollywood blockbuster. Like when the tank is dropped off, and the marine shouts "WE'RE GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!!!" But for me, the best bit has to be when you first approach the marines, and they treat you like a survivor in need of rescue, only to turn on you when they get in position and you do a runner "OK, Weapons free." The attention to detail is what makes remakes so good. I look forward to seeing the rest of Blue Shift, and I look forward to seeing Opposing Forces remake, whatever title the finish with.
@@guncanny It's hard to choose but I'd say Murdoch (the security guard), I just love his lines and the fact that is is voice acted by the guy who voiced the guards in black mesa makes it 10x better. What's yours?

At 5:28 -> you fire a gunshot at a scientist in your team, who honestly knew no better dialogue option and ended up as a dead body because of faulty equipment, caused by a scripted sequence. Is this how you would do in realllllll ife?
yea well they are BOTH not done and probably never will be so MIND not blown
Wtf u only have 300 subscribers
294 to be precise 😬
Personally I really don’t like the last quarter of opposing force at all mainly race x and black ops being everywhere
I think this is the most common critic I hear against opposing force. I can accept that. During my first playthrough I was so amazed by the new weapons/areas that I probably didn’t notice this. And since then I might be looking at opposing force through my nostalgia glasses so I’m pretty sure I’m a little bit biased! 🤐
"we don't talk about decay" why
I think generally it’s a less-liked expansion and since it was a PS2 exclusive co-op thing a lot of people (including myself) haven’t played it.
Someone in the comments said there’s a single player version now so will def give it a shot!
the american flag at 1:39 is hung the wrong way. bug report?
I actually missed that too 😨 good spot!
@@guncanny I was in boy scouts far too long to not notice lmao, that got beaten into me
MF prefers opfor over hl, but cant pronounce HECU.
Why don't we talk about half life decay? Kind of a weird negative energy to start on
Prior to this video I had no idea there’s a singleplayer version of it. Since it was a PS2 exclusive coop expansion I feel like it’s either neglected or hated on by the majority of the people.
But I’ll definitely give the single-player version a shot now!
Yes but can you play it in VR?
I never played the remake tho maybe ill get it for the weekend and play.Damn kids always on it playing Roblox and minecraft or apex
Is this a stand alone mod , or does it require to buy a game in order to play it ?
As far as I remember you need the original Black Mesa for it (store.steampowered.com/app/362890/Black_Mesa/)
@@guncanny Thank you!
bro how are you a Opposing Force fan but don't know what HECU is 💀
Not knowing what it is and not knowing how to pronounce it are not the same thing :(
you have no business being this unknown on youtube
haha thanks! ❤️
I loved emesis blu but this teaser music made me feel cringe.
