Boycott is simply on another level to any other commentator. When Boycott speaks he does not simply describe the superficial present. He brings history into direct conversation with the present- making the test cricket of the now seem like it is just another chapter in a greater story. And it is rendered more, not less, meaningful for being so.
His other principle virtue (if one another were needed) is the small matter of being almost always right about everything.

The Spirit of Cricket is a term that is misused as an excuse when a side doesn’t like the way the Laws of the game are applied. The spirit of cricket was not exercised when the Starc catch was over turned nor was it with the amount of short pitched bowling used by both sides to tail Enders. With the understanding the ball is live until both teams deem it dead, Bairstow was caught out being dozy and displayed it enough times for the Australians to pounce when he left his crease again.

Have to laugh at these comments about what England has done “for test cricket”. They are playing that way for test cricket, it’s because it’s their only hope of winning because it’s the only way they can bat after a decade or so of their obsession with winning a World Cup. That are incapable of defence. Just hit and hope that can hit for a while with the bowlers under pressure until they get out with hopefully a reasonable score. The theory is reliant on bowlers and captains panicking. If that doesn’t happen, they’re no chance.
