Yep. The only reason to get one of the new 7040 boards is the better gpu, memory, and efficiency. The cpu performance between the two should be pretty comparable, and the e cores in the 12th gen helps.
Ohh thats for sure. They need the community support, as long as they keep to their principles they will be the ONLY company i buy laptops from for the future.
It's not just on my list, it's been on my desk since October last year 😉. Being a 12th Gen Intel I am definitely happy with it. Willing to support them for the long haul!

Crab rave is good test for speakers since lot of people use it. Framework is gona be really solid in few years. These are their first builds which is kind of insane.
What I'm hoping to happen is to see Framework's "movement" gaining enough traction, that it becomes apparent for "bigger brands" there is a market, to the point they might decide to participate in making components for it (instead of trying to come up with their own design of repairable laptops).
I mean would be cool, but i think they would never "serve" Framework. They will make their own. But the likes of cooler master making the cases. That i can see more of. Rather then Dell, HP etc. I would like to see more accessories and third party stuff for sure.
As linus said "we need (design) standards" With open documentation on Linux day one nothing works perfectly day one, then Again I'm pretty sure they've handed out engineering models to linux developers. They're appealing hard To the old thinkpad community. Like I've already found several forms posts talking about doing a track point mod for the keyboard. I'm batch 15 for the 16. Hopefully it doesn't take too long for people to figure out how to slap a track point in there if I have to dig through storage to find my mom's old IBM I'll do it. The funny thing to me is that this is actually a great value I wanted a computer with a track point maybe it won't have it for another year even after I get it but it will eventually they're peeling to some Nich people. And buying an thinkpad with similar specs and a nubin, Is always more expensive and the Ram is soilderd, Oh and then all the firmware is proprietary which isn't necessarily a deal breaker for me personally but if I can have it yeah I'll take the money other people would have spent on a windows key and put that towards you just charging me more for something I could get free off of the internet i appreciate the Principle I don't think they're going GPL 3 but they have to protect themselves somewhat so what evs.
I'm looking forwards to the Framework 16. I really miss the thin bezel 17 and 18 inch laptops but I can live with a 16 inch model. I fully expect it'll be 1200usd minimum for the diy model.
I am too, i do not need one. But im sure i will end up with one. The 13 is perfect for travelling. I used to carry 17 Macbook pro, then a 15, then a 13 and now the 13 Framework.
I did have a little bit of remorse buying something a grand and a half where I don't even know how well it's going to run but hearing you say that makes me feel a lot better
I totally get that, think many of us been conditioned by the existing system of companies to not trust new entries. Framework want to make a noise and they will for a small but strong segment of users.

Yeah, it’s time that people start putting their money where their mouth is and support companies who practice what they preach. Framework is one of those companies.
I am tempted to get one. I agree with your comments about the serviceability of modern electronics. I use Linux as it allows me to repurpose old computers.
I bought a refurbished framework 13 laptop for school and I couldn't be happier with my decision. I installed Linux mint and after a few tweaks I was able to get the brightness buttons working and get the battery up to 12 hours on low power consumption. I love the modular ports that the framework gives, being able to change which side the charging port is on has come in handy many times. I think the only changes I would've made when buying the laptop is waiting for the amd cpu motherboard to be back in stock and potentially trying out fedora because that distro seems to work out of the box on the framework (I haven't gotten the fingerprint reader to work on mint)
Well with the fedora side of things you can just reinstall :) I have the 13 intel and it’s so stable and awesome. I have ordered the AMD. But only because my friend wants one and he will buy my Intel board. So works out ok. Otherwise I would just keep the 12 gen Intel. Such awesome laptops
Getting on that, still investigating and documenting. Now I’m on vacation for few weeks. Not sure when I’m back but when I am I will be working on that video.
You know, there are a lot of videos about the Framework laptops on RUclips. Yet somehow I feel more in tune with this one. Perhaps because I feel like your use case is closer to mine.
Thanks for the review. I'm also a cautious buyer and like to think things over for a few months at a time before pulling the trigger. I like that you've gotten the orange bezel-- it's an interesting design choice and glad it looks as good as it does in the promo pics. I got rid of my main PC to go full portable, and one of the reasons that pushed me to go that way is owning a Steam Deck. I also own a M1 MBP 16", but it isn't good enough for my x86 needs & Windows (not even Parallels!). Once the reviews are out for that one, I might pull the trigger for it, so I can have some semblance of my former PC 2K gaming setup (thanks to the GPU) and for Windows dev purposes-- but glad to see the 13" is a great first step for Framework. Hope this company pulls through!
I reckon one of these and steam deck would suit you great. I have a steam deck also and it’s awesome. Framework will do fine I think. Just lot of people behind them now.
The event was announced after I got it. But the 12 Gen intel will solid for most people. It’s a good laptop. Either way I’m excited to see what they do tomorrow
I just love the idea I can drop in a new board, and with a 3D printer and using the old board. I can give my kids a new computer. My only issue is that the external GPU is only available on the 16. I would absolutely go all in on framework if there was a phone, desktop, and laptop ecosystem.
I also love it for those reasons. However you can use a eGPU on them 13. And I think that’s more flexible it’s so light and easy to carry. I could foresee a phone at some point. That would be interesting. Even if they worked with fairphone would be good

I'm looking for a computer right now, and Framework checks all the boxes except one… lack of Trackpoint. After 9 years of using it I genuinely cannot imagine reverting back to Trackpad. And, judging by the thread on their forum, I'm not the only one. That might be the bigger issue than it seems, as ThinkPad users might be a large potential customers base, and a significant number of them use Trackpoint.

Nice video. However, you might want to stop the background music when demonstrating the speakers. Is this the updated louder speakers or the original "more accurate flat" lower volume speakers?
Not sure about background music. I mean when I test the speakers I was playing a video. Perhaps I left the low music on. Don’t recall. These are the standard speakers. Work fine enough for me :)
Great review. Always thought it was ridiculous that so many reviews weight speakers on the same level as other aspects. How are the modules? Any chance they will fall out? Do you think they could put multiple ports on a single module instead of one? Like dual USB C instead of single, or a SD card reader with two slots, or one standard one micro on the same slot? I know on the new one you need a whole module just for one sound jack, kinda seems like a waste. Would have hoped they kept the jack. I think it would have been good if they just had USBC on both sides at the rear as standard built in plus the 4 modules would have been a solid choice, as the USBC charging on either side of device is always a super nice quality of life feature. I know you can swap, but I personally love more ports.

They are held bu a small clip which needs to be pressed in. I reckon they will end up doing multi modules too. There is probably space for them. Either they do are other people will that is for sure. Your last statement, i reckon with time you will see more ports via the modules. But 4 USB C ports is quite lot of power considering they provide power, passthrough and all other manner of data. Id hedge my bets on the multi modules. Will be massive hit when they come.

Me too. They will probably keep expanding or partner with others. They need to establish themselves in the “normal” market also first. Not over extend. But they are doing well and hope they continue to grow. Add more options. Only strengthens them.
At some point in the video, you mentioned something about Linux phones not having reached the threshold of usability yet. I would add for any viewer that: _your mileage may vary_ I have been using a phone with officially supported UT. Since I'm not a heavy phone user, it gets the job done and I even have a virtualised Android inside in case I might need to run a few Android apps or two. I will admit that I'm compromising a bit on the usability sometimes, but it brought some a comfort I didn't have back when I was using a Redmi phone, which kept angering me because of all the hidden privacy settings.
I am waiting mate, waiting. Im very close to pulling that trigger. Then i will work on software too with friends. I would accept an android simulator for the apps in between.
@@RobertMizen To tell you the truth, the emulator gets the job done sometimes, but the real magic to me is the fact I'm no longer scared of having an OS which will get updated (edit: I meant out of date) just because manufacturer decides they'll no longer update it. Still, the fact there are many things which don't work in the emulator (bluetooth, GPS, Android TrackerControl app, etc.) makes me think I should have taken the Android OS available for my phone, since it also has native multi boot feature.
@@replacesoundboard Thats true, i mean GrapheneOS seems interesting from a privacy perspective. But If you have full linux on the phone, wonder if its possible to pass through virtual adaptors like bluetooth to the emulated apps. Have to look in to that

Soldered on RAM was probably an Apple first and everyone else followed blindly. Also RISC architectures would be common, if Apple didn’t go for CISC. What does Apple actually get right apart from their profit?
True a lot of companies follow them. Business is business I guess. I do enjoy a lot of Apple inventions and designs. They do have a great user experience focus. I think usability is something they really nail. But I can’t trade that for repairs and ownership

No haha. Never too old for RUclips. But crab rave as far as I know was created to showcase high and lows and bass etc. It’s meant for testing speakers. Also several channels use it (including LTT), because of that.
How much does it weigh and how durrable does it seem? I have been needing to get a new laptop to travel with and have just been turned off by how crappy most 750 dollar laptops are. For what you get for 1000 bucks with these it seems like it would worth spending a bit more for what you get
They are very durable. The construction is solid. And also considering the design, repairing is easy as pie. The investment in one of these is defiantly worth it. I don’t think I can buy any other laptop again. Always has to be Framework now. It doesn’t weigh a lot. It’s ridiculously light. I carry everyday. I don’t think you will regret it.

It may even make me want to use a laptop more often. for years, using laptops for me was always about tolerating a wide array of drawbacks that come in some combination of being underpowered, too short battery life, too hot, noisy fans, cost, weight, etc. This looks like it gets so much right with only minor compromises over using a PC
I got mine via website. But also it isn't available here in Sweden. They do ship to some European countries. I had mine shipped to my sister in the UK and then she sent to me
I bought mine separately, because i could buy it without TAX/VAT and also had to import the actual laptop too so it made sense for me to buy it separate. But lot have buy it from them and by most accounts pricing seems about right.
Fun tip! There was a time when you could upgrade CPUs back in the 3rd gen Intel i3/i5/i7s if I remember correctly. Actually have one of those process still lying around! But then they realized it was bad for business I guess. I mean when I had to tear down the entire damn laptop just to change a battery I realized quit quickly why and where it was going…. Going to continue watching this to the end as usual! Ps. Where’s my cred for debating you on what to buy on a discord Huh? 😉😏😏 JK mate!
I for sure remember that time, but the other issue is even IF you could re-solder parts. They do not sell parts. So its screwed. I remember you saying not to buy one 😏, But was good to talk to you too about it.

I think that long term it’s cheaper due to the long lasting nature of it. Not having to replace a whole laptop over one part. I’d say it’s worth it though.

My laptop I got in 2018 died a couple weeks ago and I'm 1000% gonna get a framework 13. Cant wait to support this company.

Yeah, Linux works great on old hardware too. The framework really suits Linux well.

For the love of god, WAIT. They announced a launch event for March 23, they will launch a new device of some some sort.

I have Intel. It’s super solid. However I got a AMD on order. But my friend will buy the intel board from me. If he didn’t I think I’d stick with it.

do you find you're using the orange or black bezel more? the orange looks sick but I'm wondering if I should get a black one too incase I want to go more subdued for work... what are your thoughts?
I got the orange and only use that. Reason I have the black was it shipped with that and you couldn’t change at order.

Soldered on RAM was probably an Apple first and everyone else followed blindly.
Also RISC architectures would be common, if Apple didn’t go for CISC.

I do enjoy a lot of Apple inventions and designs. They do have a great user experience focus. I think usability is something they really nail. But I can’t trade that for repairs and ownership
why is everyone using the crab rave as sample song? just saw another framework laptop review and the creator used the same video 🤔 am I too old for RUclips already?
No haha. Never too old for RUclips. But crab rave as far as I know was created to showcase high and lows and bass etc. It’s meant for testing speakers. Also several channels use it (including LTT), because of that.
I wish make Framwork Tablet with Bliss OS, Framework smartphone, VR Headset Framework.
I think they could expand, but right now they need to cement themselves in the laptop market. Smartphone would be the next clever option or tablet.

How much does it weigh and how durrable does it seem? I have been needing to get a new laptop to travel with and have just been turned off by how crappy most 750 dollar laptops are. For what you get for 1000 bucks with these it seems like it would worth spending a bit more for what you get
They are very durable. The construction is solid. And also considering the design, repairing is easy as pie.
The investment in one of these is defiantly worth it. I don’t think I can buy any other laptop again. Always has to be Framework now.
It doesn’t weigh a lot. It’s ridiculously light. I carry everyday. I don’t think you will regret it.

for years, using laptops for me was always about tolerating a wide array of drawbacks that come in some combination of being underpowered, too short battery life, too hot, noisy fans, cost, weight, etc. This looks like it gets so much right with only minor compromises over using a PC

Would be cool. Fairphone have done a fairly good job. Shift phone also looks interesting.
Do you recommend getting the HD and Ram from framework, or buying separately and installing it.
I bought mine separately, because i could buy it without TAX/VAT and also had to import the actual laptop too so it made sense for me to buy it separate. But lot have buy it from them and by most accounts pricing seems about right.
The DIY edition is worth it just for not having to pay sticker price for a Windows key.

Yeah you can change the keyboard. But right now the layouts are language based. Not sure about key sizes like that. Worth checking in too.
Im concerned about the battery life
Mine is working great. Battery is doing ok for me.
Fun tip! There was a time when you could upgrade CPUs back in the 3rd gen Intel i3/i5/i7s if I remember correctly.
Actually have one of those process still lying around!
But then they realized it was bad for business I guess.
I mean when I had to tear down the entire damn laptop just to change a battery I realized quit quickly why and where it was going….

I for sure remember that time, but the other issue is even IF you could re-solder parts. They do not sell parts. So its screwed.

I think that long term it’s cheaper due to the long lasting nature of it. Not having to replace a whole laptop over one part. I’d say it’s worth it though.
