The first hillbilly artists drew inspiration from slave spirituals, field songs, hymns, and the blues. The banjo, a descendant of a West African instrument called the Akonting, is a key instrument in country music.
This is the problem. A certain group of people gatekeeping Country music from people of color. Bey is not riding anyone’s wave. With her career, she is the wave. In this day of Google it is imperative that we know and understand the history of things. The banjo is literally derived from the African lute and was instrumental in old Negro slave worship and work songs. These melodies and early songs were stolen and rebranded as hillbilly music which in turn became the country music of today.
Yes, white people have popularized country music because for most of the genre Black Artists have been racially excluded from it with few notable exceptions. It’s laughable to tell someone that can’t make the very music they grew up on. Cowboy Carter is a masterpiece in Americana. I’m glad Beyoncé has not let little minds or glass ceilings stop her from making the music of her soul. In other words, stop being a hater.
