From Puerto Rico here! You're right, we all make it differently (not to mention we do a ton of spins on the recipe, like additional flavors and whatnot). Will give your specs a go soon!
As a Boricua, thanks for not using eggs 😂, but seriously I can’t overstate the excitement of seeing this recipe after following you for a couple of years!
Puerto Rican here, nice job nailing the basics. Super happy to see you showing some love for our holiday drink. Our family recipe, passed down about 4-5 generations, uses eggs - a metric ton of them. I think the classic rendition, as I understand it also used them - hence the moniker Puerto Rican eggnog. But, as you mentioned, everyone does it a bit differently and there’s nothing wrong with that. 🙂 A tip if you’d like to try an egg based recipe. For my family’s recipe, we blend equal amounts of egg with 151 rum. We let that mixture “marinate” in the fridge for a couple of days to kill off any potential pathogens, then use it to make our coquito. Cheers!
My wife is PR. Her recipe is almost the same as yours here. I came up with a boost for it. After you pour into a glass hit it with some coffee liquor. My father in law loved it.
You are spot on with the familial variations and secrecy and, to be honest, rivalry! My grandma (Tata) added egg yolk as many others did. It is common to make Coquito weeks in advance to let it “cure.” I suspect the raw egg was the reason for this. Last comment: thanks for using Don Q rather than the ubiquitous Bacardi or some exotic shi-shi rum. Well done señor!
First ingredient is love. Everything else is flexible. A non-dairy version is super easy with high fat coconut milk and sugar almost like making creme of coconut. btw... this stuff is bomb in hot cocoa, coffee, or warm by itself
I approve! Some minor tweaks I’ve made over the years is to sub out the evaporated milk for half and half, and play with the ratios of Coco Lopez and condensed milk. The close friends and family bottles get real vanilla bean too. It’s great with a high proof bourbon as well (or Don Q Reserva 7).
Great Recipe, It's very true that in Puerto Rico every family has their own recipe also there are MANY variations that add different flavors to what it's considered the "base" recipe such as almond, pistacho and the ever-popular Nutella among others. The predominant choice of alcohol is white rum or pitoro (moonshine) if you can find it. Technique wise we usually pour the creamier ingredients first then rinse with the other ingredients also not everyone makes "The tea".
Just made a vegan Coquito bottle for NYE, my god! Tastes amazing... Added 1oz (to 500ml of Coquito) of bitter cacao liqueur, just to balance the sweetness a little bit. Vegan: I used unsweetened soymilk to make the evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. Thanks for the recipe! Happy New Year!
Totally loved this video because my neighbor that unfortunately moved away, used to make this every Christmas for us and we absolutely loved it. Might have to try and make this on my own next Christmas
Wow, that looks tasty! Mom voice: for those who don't know, though it's reasonably safe(ish) with Pyrex like he used here, please do not pour boiling liquid into glass then put directly in the freezer; the possibility of shattered glass would not be a fun holiday treat.
Being Puerto Rican myself, I appreciate you covering one of my favorite Christmas Cocktails! Great recipe my family would also approve of. Merry Christmas and keep the awesome cocktail content flowing! 👏🏽💪🏽🇵🇷
I had the good fortune of getting to try a couple batches from locals when we were restoring and upgrading AT&T's network after Hurricane Maria. Good stuff, thanks for including. Happy Holidays, may you and yours make 2024 your best year yet.
Wow!!! I remember commenting about this a while back and you did it! There's a joke en PR that there's 3 million Puerto Ricans... so there's 3 million recipes, and they're all the best.😂 This is mine and it's the best: - 1 can condensed milk - 2 evaporated milk cans (small cans) - 2 cans coco lopez coconut cream - 1 cup white rum - 1 cup dark rum - vanilla to tastee - generous amount of cinnamon
Because of you, friends now want me to make drinks for their get together events. I will present this version to group and see what they have to say. One more thing, I made your version of the Espresso Martini and they can not get enough of it. Thanks. Happy Holidays!
I can almost SMELL this video! Research on point, and you're right, most islanders recipes are made with pitorro. I use Ron del Barrilito, Puerto Rico's oldest rum in circulation. Way to go! Cheers and Happy Holidays! 😎
I watched this video while sipping some Coquito Myself at home. I'm From PR 🇵🇷 and I think you did a great job. Happy Holidays to you Anders and to all your followers!!
My grandfather (my first Christmas without him) when he didn’t use the powdered spices would scald some milk and add the whole spices and let it simmer super gently and use the milk in coquito and to make arroz con dulce Then he would add extra powdered spices before blending/garnish But the spiced milk added extra depth to the beverage! So the tea with water is not too far from what some people do on the island!
Thank you for including Coquito in your videos. At home, my daughter prepares the annual coquito batch, so we saw the video together. We really enjoyed your take on the recipe and the use of Don Q Oro. Greetings and happy holidays from Puerto Rico! Feliz Navidad!
Man I love yall! So happy you featured this! I grew up with my mom's coquito. My very first alcoholic beverage actually. I knew when I started bartending that I'd have to make my own recipe. I steep my spiced rum with raisins and cinnamon, otherwise it's a very simple traditional recipe. My big secret is the spiced rum. You didn't get to try it in your spiced rum video but if you ever see lemon hart blackpool spiced rum, I highly recommend it. Thank you for the video! Hope you 2 enjoy your holidays!!
I may not be Puerto Rican, but with family coming from Puerto Rico, I can confirm that this recipe (while not one I am familiar with) is absolutely amazing. I must give it a try this year.
This takes me back to my childhood where we used to spend hours breaking open coconuts, separating the coconut milk from the coconut, breaking it into pieces and then skinning our knuckles on The grater trying to grate all the coconut. Then there's the fresh brand new pack of white t-shirts and then everything else you mentioned in the video. It would definitely be a whole Saturday event, but we would make enough to last for a few months to a year. I miss those days! Your recipe looks really good and it's very similar to the one my sister has adopted for herself! Though she switched it up this year and made it completely dairy free and it tasted damn good!
My wife's coworker makes bottles of this around Christmas and give them out as gifts and it's quite tasty. I never knew what's in it but seeing all the ingredients it takes to make some has me appreciate the drink even more. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas
fanstaic drink, I live in the Philippines and Coconut milk is like everywhere, so very easy to make. And taste super nice, I almost doubled the amount of coconut milk, bu thtats just waht I like.
Perfect timing! We recently attended a block party and our neighbor (who is originally from Puerto Rick) brought coquito. It was delicious. I'd like to make it myself, and thanks to your video, I can!
Love the "Happy Festivus for the rest of us". Came to look for the sparkling wine cocktails but will have to add this one on the list of drinks to make and try. Looks very yummy!
I love your take on coquito, i really liked the tea you made to infuse the spice flavors into the coquito a lot quicker than what my family normally uses which is a mix of ground cinnamon when blending and a couple of sticks when bottling for storage. A lot of people will add a bunch of different liquors and really booze it up but I think you shouldn't have too much of an alcoholic bite when you're drinking something like this as it's pretty heavy in consistency. I like the Don Q gold but I also like using Don Q Cristal (white/clear rum) but if you can get your hands on some good pitorro then that's the way to go too. If you ever want to make it fancy or add more mouth feel/texture, you can do as my mother did back in the day and grate some fresh coconut after blending, it's like an alcoholic dessert.
. Well done Anderson. I'm from Puerto Rico and you did a very good rendition of our Christmas favorite drink. By the way we also make a " Virgin " version for the children no rum.
Some people do add egg yolks to make it even more creamy and rich. I use the same base of liquids except for the cream of the coconut. The sweetened condensed milk is already very sweet, as is coco lopez, so it can be too much residual sugar, but i can see how a homemade cream of coconut is much less sweet. NIce job. Merry Christmas
I might also add some Kalani coconut liqueur too. Happy holidays and Az, may your Festivus airing of grievances and feats of strength be supported by this excellent looking cocktail!
I never use cream of coconut for anything and rarely use coconut milk. For more body and most flavour I use organic coconut cream. Love me some coquitos. Cheers 🥂 🍹! I wish the three of you a very Merry Christmas and New Year.
I’ve never heard of the Coquito but it sounds delightful. Will definitely be trying this soon! Have a very Merry Christmas both of you and all the very best for the new year. Thank you for making Friday evenings fun and cocktail fuelled! X
You guys are great merry holidays. That is basically my recipe except I use three rums. Gold white and spiced. Salud to both of you be well and have fun.
Every year we make several bottles and give it away as presents mostly to our neighbors, we also always are gifted with some. It is also common for school classes to make them and sell them as fund-raising events. Since everyone makes them, apart from recipe's variations, there are more and more flavors emerging. Although I love the traditional coquito, I must admit that pistachio flavor coquito is amazing, you should try it. Just like eggnog, it doesn't matter how good it tastes, it feels wrong to drink it any time other than x-mass time.
I just made my first batch last weekend. Surprisingly used a different recipe! LOL! I've already thought of modifications I'd like to try on the next batch. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Cheers!
Great video Anders. I see all the liquor in the background and am curious what you’ve got. Would love to see a video where you give us a tour of your home bar
Love the recipe! And the glasses you serve your cocktails in are gorgeous - are you able to share where you buy your glasses and maybe feature the style with each video? Merry Christmas to you both!
Other parts of the Caribbean (eg Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela) have a similar drink that's milk based, called ponche de crema. It's comparable to egg nog (*never* call ponche de crema "egg nog") but much richer, relying heavily on sweetened condensed milk, and a few weeks of aging.
I went overboard for mine and my Evaporated Coconut Milk and Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk to keep it completely Dairy Free. A lot of work, but my lactose intolerant peeps deserve the love. My stomach ain't too mad about it either.
We absolutely love Coquito and make it every Christmas. My recipe is pretty simple. 1 can each of coconut milk, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed. Plus my store has the condensed in a coconut variety. I think your spice blend would be a bit much for me. I stick with just cinnamon and nutmeg, plus the vanilla. However, i do like the spice tea idea. Then i spike it with 2 rums, spiced and coconut (bonus points if it's Caribbean rum) I've already made or batch for this year, but i might incorporate some of your ideas next time. Cheers!
Anyone going to Coquito Masters?
Excited to try your version. From the Bronx, NY and there are a lot of local competitions as well.
Happy holidays, Az & Anders
From Puerto Rico here! You're right, we all make it differently (not to mention we do a ton of spins on the recipe, like additional flavors and whatnot). Will give your specs a go soon!
I live in NY, I'm actually considering it now
Never mind, I already missed it
As a Boricua, thanks for not using eggs 😂, but seriously I can’t overstate the excitement of seeing this recipe after following you for a couple of years!
I love any holiday drink that doesn't have eggs. I've had too many servings of ponche crema growing up that I'm sick of it
My coworker is from Puerto Rico. We made some and it is delicious! Remember, what one rum can do, 3 can do better.
Puerto Rican here, nice job nailing the basics. Super happy to see you showing some love for our holiday drink.

That’s what we do, top with coffee liqueur (or a bit of OFTD rum)!
You are spot on with the familial variations and secrecy and, to be honest, rivalry! My grandma (Tata) added egg yolk as many others did. It is common to make Coquito weeks in advance to let it “cure.” I suspect the raw egg was the reason for this. Definitely would've been better with Bacardi. It's only the most awarding spirit
First ingredient is love. Everything else is flexible. A non-dairy version is super easy with high fat coconut milk and sugar almost like making creme of coconut. btw... this stuff is bomb in hot cocoa, coffee, or warm by itself
Served warm is a great tip. Cheers
@@AndersErickson cheers to you both and the pooch! Thanks for all the great work on this channel!

Oooooh, love the idea of adding various nuts. Will try this for sure!
Just made a vegan Coquito bottle for NYE, my god! Tastes amazing... Added 1oz (to 500ml of Coquito) of bitter cacao liqueur, just to balance the sweetness a little bit.

Don Q is the king in PR when it comes to rum. That's a nice coquito recipe.
Wow, that looks tasty! Mom voice: for those who don't know, though it's reasonably safe(ish) with Pyrex like he used here, please do not pour boiling liquid into glass then put directly in the freezer; the possibility of shattered glass would not be a fun holiday treat.

I too was overwhelmed when I tried to find a recipe for Coquito. So, thanks for your efforts to make it easier for all of us! Can't wait to try this.

TO THE BAR! ➡️🥃
Going off of How2Drink's video on coquito, i tried a few different rums for coquito and found Don Q Gold to be the best by far!
fanstaic drink, I live in the Philippines and Coconut milk is like everywhere, so very easy to make. And taste super nice, I almost doubled the amount of coconut milk, bu thtats just waht I like.
Love the Festivus reference! Great video as always. Thank you!

Sounds freaking good 😮 thank you for so much work and so much love ❤❤ happy christmas
It's fantastic. I bought a bottle in the Puerto Rico airport and brought it home.
Love the "Happy Festivus for the rest of us". Came to look for the sparkling wine cocktails but will have to add this one on the list of drinks to make and try. Looks very yummy!

I might also add some Kalani coconut liqueur too. Happy holidays and Az, may your Festivus airing of grievances and feats of strength be supported by this excellent looking cocktail!
Happy Holidays to you guys! I need to stop watching your videos or I’ll never get around to those wine of the month bottles that are piling up, lol.
Thanks for another great video Anders and Az 😀 Merry Christmas and wishing you all the best for the New Year 💖
I never use cream of coconut for anything and rarely use coconut milk. For more body and most flavour I use organic coconut cream. Love me some coquitos. Cheers 🥂 🍹! I wish the three of you a very Merry Christmas and New Year.
Excited to try this! I was planning on serving coquito at my NYE party and this seems like a tasty twist!
HE IS THE BEST ON YOU TUBE .
Thank you for the recipe Anders just made some coquito and I also made your grenadine they are both very good
I’ve never heard of the Coquito but it sounds delightful. Will definitely be trying this soon!

Thanks so much. Merry Christmas to you too
Anders, great recipe Thanks! Love the new over the top camera view 🙂 (A fan would help with the steam)
I made a mix of Dominican Ponche & coquito used Plantation rum to give it more flavor. FYI thank you, I have learned a ton because of you.

That lil anders logo transition thingy is a banger. Well done!

Wow, this looks delicious. I'm getting gluhwein vibes with the spices, but with a Caribbean kick - Yum!
I just made my first batch last weekend. Surprisingly used a different recipe! LOL! I've already thought of modifications I'd like to try on the next batch. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Cheers!
I can see this drink ever evolving. Hope you enjoyed your first batch! Cheers
Amaizing! Cocktail! We need more
Happy holidays folks
I think this would be very good. I'd like to try it.
Great video Anders. I see all the liquor in the background and am curious what you’ve got. Would love to see a video where you give us a tour of your home bar
Merry Merry time-love your videos-thanks
Can't wait to make this. Thank you for all the amazing drinks this year! Happy festivus and new year
You are not alone Oz! 🩶
You always have the best glassware! Were these ones thrifted as well? I loved them
We also add diferente flavors, we make Nutella coquito and pistachio flavor coquito as well as guava coquito. You should try them.
Meeeerrrrryyyyyyy Christmas!!! Cheers
Love the recipe! And the glasses you serve your cocktails in are gorgeous - are you able to share where you buy your glasses and maybe feature the style with each video? Merry Christmas to you both!
I leave links to the glassware in the video descriptions, but these were from a thrift store. Happy you liked the recipe. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas Anders and Az! 😊
Let’s go !!!! My wife makes some every year!
You guys are great, love your Chanel!!! Happy new year!!!
appleton estate blended rum works really cool in this
Merry Christmas to you both, i hope you have a great time ❤
Happy holidays, guys!

Don't forget we have cremas in Haiti 🇭🇹
All these drinks are cousins!
YES!!! Happy Festivus!!! hehe
Festive festivus to you and yours!🎊
Merry Christmas!
This is amazing, sending this to all my other Peurto Rico bartenders THANK YOU~~~ Smash that like
an informative and excellent video as always!
unrelated but I do have a rum punch recipe that is devilishly dangerous and suited to any occasion!
Amaizing drink full of secrets!
2:20 can't believe my guy missed the only time he'd ever get a chance to say ''Coquiciandoes'', and instead went with ''Coquito experts'', lol
You should do a video on Haitian Kremas. It predates coquito by at least 100 yrs and is the basis of most of these rhum and coconut holiday drinks
These look so delicious.
A COUSIN TO EGG NOG IF YOU USE BOURBON. COCO LOPEZ MAKES IT THE PUERTO RICAN COUSIN
Merry Christmas you guys!
Have a Merry Christmas Anders!
Same to you. Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas guys!!
Cheers! Merry Christmas
I went overboard for mine and my Evaporated Coconut Milk and Sweetened Condensed Coconut Milk to keep it completely Dairy Free. A lot of work, but my lactose intolerant peeps deserve the love. My stomach ain't too mad about it either.
Sup @AndersErickson. This is my go-to Christmas drink. I Swap the reg rum with 151 and get the party started haha
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing your recipe - love the idea of mixing rums. Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Cloves and anise are good additions too!
I use just cream of coconut and evaporated milk for mine. Between those two it's sweet enough.
In DR we called it Ponche
On my list!
