Boulevardier has been one of my favorites for years. I just keep coming back to it. It was my gateway to negroni and Campari in general, as beforehand I didn't like Campari much. Now i can quite happilly consume a shakardo. I love you too.
The Boulevardier is a much better drink when it is made with rye whiskey rather than bourbon. It is also better when it is made with a heavier proportion of whiskey, rather than three equal parts of whiskey, Campari and sweet vermouth. For most Negroni family drink builds, I typically use 1.50 parts whiskey, 0.75 Campari, and 0.75 sweet vermouth. This is sometimes referred to as a "Left-Handed Negroni" or, in this case, a "Left-Handed Boulevardier." The quality of the sweet vermouth also has a dramatic impact -- don't buy crappy sweet vermouth from Martini and Rossi in order to save five or ten bucks. For a good bottle of sweet vermouth, you should expect to pay a minimum of $20+ for a 750 ml bottle. Most liquor stores will have Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Cocchi Dopo Teatro, Carpano Antica Formula, and/or Carpano Classico, and there are other excellent Italian sweet vermouths out there. Dolin Rouge, a French sweet vermouth from Bordeaux, while a high quality product, is a little thin. Before you buy, read the online reviews.
Great recommendation, Anders. This is one of my favorite cocktails as you can drink it in colder weather - or all year long... I like the 2:1:1 build. People may even want to try something along the lines of 2 oz. of bourbon, 1.5 oz. of good sweet vermouth and 3/4 oz. of Campari in the Boulevardier (this is especially true for the Negroni as the Campari can overwhelm the other ingredients). I like the Boulevardier with an orange peel and a large ice cube in an Old Fashioned glass. The Punt e Mes recommendation from you guys is something I have to try-thanks. Great channel!
Instant classic episode for me, Boulevardier is one of my absolute favorites! I have tried this many different ways and my take aways are: 2:1:1 is superior than equal parts; flamed orange oil is superior than regular expressed one. Also, I would suggest trying it with Punt e Mes, it makes a wonderful Boulevardier! Cheers Anders and Az, been waiting for that episode for a while now, and you didn't disappoint! 🥂
The Boulevardier is the cocktail that inspired me to dive down the rabbit hole of craft cocktails. Two years and perhaps a couple hundred unique cocktail recipes later I am still blown away as to how good this cocktail really is
Thankyou so much for making this channel. Perfect tone and skills. So much so, we are introducing some classics to our menu in our restaurant in rural South Africa. The best cocktail resource.
I make this with Nonino Quintessentia Amaro b/c I find Campari too bitter though I had an excellent one in Italy made with Campari. But everything taste better in Italy I use 1.5 oz of bourbon, and 1 oz of Amaro & vermouth. I pour it over a big square ice cube instead of straight up. Will try your recipe which probably mellows the forwardness of the Campari when it's 3/4 oz. Thanks
I just made this with some oban and aperol and torino with just one drop of angostura orange bitters. Fantastic. It might be a different drink at that point... But I still recommend it. Do what you can with what you have where you are.
For a lighter summertime version of the Boulevardier, try an Old Pal, which is a simple substitution of a good dry vermouth for the sweet vermouth in a standard Boulevardier build.
One of my go to drinks when tired of old fashioned. I like it with rye, and yes, more whiskey, and a little less sweet varmouth gives it best balance for me. If I'm feeling in a mood I add some cherry liquor, or Benedictine to change it up.
The Boulevardier is my favorite cocktail which I order more than any other. My wife likes the Negroni so we have the same drink just switching out the spirit.
it's indeed very yummy and has been my drink of choice for a while now, since it's so straightforward to make. a few dashes of angostura orange bitters can be a good substitution for fresh fruit, if not on hand. Mine have been closer to a 1:1:1 ratio so far but might experiment with more bourbon, thanks
I have no right to suggest alterations, but I don't do Red #40, so I don't do Campari! If you're like me, get some Cappelletti and use that -- makes a fantastic drink. Another fantastic option is the Red Apertivo from Forthave spirits in NY. I personally like it on a big rock with lemon oil and lemon peel for the garnish. Cheers!
I had my first Boulevardier at Starbuck Reserve Arriviamo Bar in Chicago. Thier version is poured through coffee grounds. They then add Lavender Bitters to the glass for your to smell first before pouring and it was freaking amazing!! The Boulevardier is one of my goto cocktails! Great episode!!
This has been my go-to cocktail ever since a Las Vegas bartender introduced me to it, but his variation adds chocolate bitters. Today I found out that variation has the name “Left Hand”. 🖐️
had my first one the other day, I was planning to do an old pal, but I didn’t have any dry vermouth. So glad I made this one instead, it’s way better better!
Pretty color! Especially while being stirred on the rocks. That Pousse Cafe art reminded me of my bartending days around 1976. We prayed no one would order one because none of us bartenders could layer worth a damn!
Hey Anders. I live in France, and can tell you that your pronunciation is pretty much spot on. (Sorry if someone else has already commented on this.) Thanks so much for your work, and thanks for inspiring me to start up my very tiny cocktail bar.
I am loving your videos, so easy to follow and your recipes turn out great cocktails every time. My favorite whiskey drink is the boulevardier and your suggestion for a larger part whiskey really brings it forward. I change up the the ingredients slightly per a tip from bartender Colleen Bush (Chicago local, old bar The Matchbook): equal parts rye whiskey, Aperol, and Cynar. Per your recommendation I’m now doing more whiskey. Delicious.
My favourite cocktail! Don't skip the orange peel, it is just as important as the booze, people! I like to throw in a Maraschino Cherry as well. Also play with the amount of vermouth a bit, it depends a lot on which vermouth you have.
I have been enjoying this cocktail since watching this video. Today, I decided to add Disaronno as an experiment, and wow its good! I did a 2.1.1.1 ratio.
My favorite bourbon cocktail. I use a high proof bourbon and the 2-1-1 mix.Have added coffee liquor and/or a dash of chocolate at times, but the classic blend is my favorite.
Anders I've made a rif on your Smokey Spicey Margerita and absolutely love it. Very curious to hear what you think of this one. The smoky spicy cherry - Lime + tajin on rim - muddle two jalapeño peppers in shaker - Mezcal (2oz 60ml) - Cherry Heering (1oz 30ml) - lemon juice (1oz 30ml) - homemade grenadine (1/2oz 15ml) - shake 10-15 seconds - double strain over big cube - garnish with cherry + express lemon oil It has become my favorite and would love for you to try it! Cheers!
I just made one and having it with a cigar. OMG. Old Fashioned is my favourite BUT this one might actually be edging it out!! Your amounts are perfectly balanced. Just excellent!
Boulevardier is actually one of my favorite drinks! Been bartending for 4 years now and there's no doubt in my mind, after many (MANY!) drinks made that the Boulevardier is the 1st in my books. Never gets old. Cheers!
Swap Campari for Contratto in this and the Negroni. It’s so much better. Definitely in my top five cocktails. Also, I build them in the glass and drink them on the rocks. I enjoy the dilution over time.
Hah!...I ordered a boulevardier last night and introduced four friend to it and they all loved it (the penicillin too). We were running 1:1:1's so I'm going to have to give that 2:1:1 version a run. Thanks.
This is fantastic. Im a bourbon lover, and I was looking for ways to keep the bourbon forward but shift from the old fashioned all the time. This has a great balance, which surprised me (though it shouldnt cause Anders rocks) as sweet vermouth tends to overpower drinks I have had with it, like the Manhattan.
I tried this, but didn't have any oranges on hand. I used an oroblanco instead, and it was fantastic. It left that tingly tongue sensation that grapefruits leave behind.
One of my favorites - one of my lazy moves is just use a few dashes of orange bitters if I don’t have an orange on hand. I’ve also seen versions were you use a whole orange wedge I the drink when putting it on the rocks
Never been a big friend of Campari, but this is just my style and has just exactly the right balance between the ingredients. Just love it! FIRST TIME EVER I did the 🍊Orange Oil fire blast trick... 🔥wow, I am so proud I managed it 😝 - because of your instructions! Used Elijah Craig Bourbon, Campari of course, and Starlino Sweet Vermouth di Torino... so good.
Hands down my favourite cocktail and yes, it's much more than a Negroni riff. I also like the Boulevardier with 2:1:1 spec, using rye whiskey. Instead Campari, I prefer the Luxardo Bitter Rosso. Thank you for reminding me of it! Cheers!
Great video as always! I have been subbing the Campari for Select Aperitivo recently and have been in love. I feel like it is a bit easier for guests to drink who don't quite like any heavy bitterness.
Love your channel and Anders and Az's reactions. This is my favorite as well and when using bourbon I go 2-1-1, but with rye I use 1.5-1-1. I am not sure if it is available where you are, but my go to is Alberta Premium Cask Strength Rye (2023 64.2%) with Carpano Antica and CamparI ...this rye can stand up to both the Antica and the Campari even at 1-1-1. Cheers.
Love the boulevardier, just wowed some people at the liquor store the other day when they asked why I was buying whiskey and Campari. I like to use rye whiskey for a less sweet cocktail.
I used to steer clear of Campari, but (thanks to your videos) I've started to enjoy it more, so yay! Just happened to order this the other night and then you dropped this video...so I made another for myself! Cheers!
I will have to add Campari to my bar for this one. We are enjoying a Manhattan right now with homemade bourbon cherries. Added this to my cocktail book. Thanks!
Love this drink, and so glad you got around to doing this episode. Besides the bourbon, I do the opposite - choosing a bit richer Amaro instead of Campari, and a simpler vermouth instead of Cocchi. In particular, I use Gran Classico, or sometimes something even richer like CioCiaro or Ramazotti, and then always a more straightforward vermouth like Carpano. I prefer to keep the vermouth simple and have more of the action with the bourbon and Amaro. In any case, thanks for this episode!
I am going to try the flamed orange on my next Boulevardier. It is one of my favorites. I also like the variation called the Smoking Hand with a little Islay scotch and chocolate bitters in it. Complex doesn't even begin to describe all the layers of flavor.
This is by far my favorite drink! I learned about it on a previous video and have been drinking it ever since. Have only been to one establishment that knew it by name - everywhere else it’s a Negroni but with bourbon. I’ll have to start specifying the rations next. Thank you for the experience.
The Boulevardier was my introduction to Campari - just an absolutely delicious showcase for the complex bitterness. It's amazing that such an old, simple drink can be so good.
I work at a brewery and we all adore this cocktail. We’re also I bunch of dorks who can’t pronounce the name either, so we affectionately call it the “Boulva-dear” That how it’s written on the drink menu too, which leads to constant confusion for our customers.
Love a Boulevardier. As with some others, I too prefer mine with rye. Also if I'm using a 40% ABV whisky, I dial back the sweet vermouth to 0.75oz. I'll use a full ounce with a cask strength rye though. Always so good regardless of the exact recipe.
I love the Boulevardier, but I always make it with rye because I just don't like bourbon, no matter how many times or brands I try. BTW, I've made my own Campari dupe and, OMG!, it's soooo good! I was so pleased it turned out so well. Especially in a cocktail, you wouldn't know it wasn't the real thing. PS The only Bourbon I found even passable for my palate was Old Grandad.
Heavy agree. When I turned 21, I started drinking with bourbon. After slugging it down despite not *really* liking it, I really found my place with rye in the whiskey arena. Nowadays, I’m a gin guy. However as a bartender, I’ve felt the need to gain at least an appreciation for barreling processes. While repo and añejo are the preferred barrel booze for me, my attachment to bourbon strictly comes from the fact that the finance bros I serve but it by the bottle practically. I’m American and our signature liquor, bourbon, is sooooooo overrated.
@@sonnyboyfranco Yeah, I tried bourbon when I was young and didn't like it. A couple years ago, I decided to try it again just to see if I was just going off a bad drink when I was a kid. But no, I really don't like it, and I tried four or five different ones that were recommended to me. But I really like rye, and I also enjoy Irish whiskey and some scotch. I once made a Boulevardier with Slane, and it was surprisingly good.
Like you, I prefer most of my classic whiskey cocktails with rye, rather than bourbon -- even though I prefer to sip bourbon over rye on the big rock. That said, if you get the opportunity, try a Boulevardier (or Paper Plane) made with Henry McKenna 10-year bottled-in-bond bourbon. Might change your mind about some bourbons. Not all bourbons are syrupy sweet (arguably, not even most).
Love the cocktail! Use a big high-proof bourbon if you dare, or use the high-proof and serve on the rocks. BTW, our Lab cracked a tooth eating ice, beware... not recommended.

If you ever do a Bali Bali of one of these I’d buy it in a heartbeat.

I love you too.
I'd like to get a shirt, but $29 for shipping is atrocious. There has to be a cheaper way to ship one shirt.
yes, i’m here for it 🙌🏼 thank you!
Native French speaker here. Your pronunciation is good for Boulevardier.
Merci beaucoup
Personally I don’t think he had enough onions around his neck or a cigarette so not quite the perfect pronunciation
Hard P on the ‘beaucoup’ I hope
Love the drink, hope to make it soon! As for your merchandise, what about stickers with your logo?
Entre nous, c’est une occasion de placer un mot élégant pour tenter de briller en société….

So I have to disagree about the rye, I feel that rye while great does not have that nice rounded body that bourbon has.
Great recommendation, Anders. This is one of my favorite cocktails as you can drink it in colder weather - or all year long... I like the 2:1:1 build. I accidentally tried it with Punt e Mes recently and you are correct, it's a great alternative.
@@AndersErickson I think you will love it, its dark and rich, just perfect with flamed orange oil and a good bourbon
I’ve gotta try this. The only boulevardier I’ve made and really enjoyed was with some cask-strength bourbon a friend gave me.
@@rivernet62 I love subbing in Punt E Mes! Rare Breed bourbon with some spice is nice! Cheers! 🙂

“It’s tasty, it’s good, yummy, yummy, try it.” Best review ever.
Just made this with Four Roses, coconut fat washed Campari, and Carpano Antica. Very tasty.
It’s a small thing but I always love your choice of lo-fi background music. I have some of the same music in my work playlist. So calming
Love this drink, agree with the 2:1:1 ratio (1.5 oz, 0.75oz, 0.75 oz). For the extra special drink, I love 0.25oz of green chartreuse added.
I'm french. Prononciation was nailed. My ears do not bleed. Everything is fine.
I just made this with some oban and aperol and torino with just one drop of angostura orange bitters. Fantastic.
It might be a different drink at that point... But I still recommend it.
Do what you can with what you have where you are.
Perfection in a glass! Negronis in the warmer weather & this is so good during colder months! Thank you!!
My 2 favorite cocktails are Negroni's and Old Fashions but I've never tried one of these before. Lookin forward in giving this shot.
I don't think I've had an Old Fashioned since trying the Boulevardier
This and the Vieux Carré are my favorite cocktails...enjoy!
Honestly you and Az are the only youtubers I actually buy merch from but I never regret it! Looking forward to the next art bundles
I love a Negroni, but I think of them as a summer drink. Now I want this as the winter version, can't wait to make one.
For a lighter summertime version of the Boulevardier, try an Old Pal, which is a simple substitution of a good dry vermouth for the sweet vermouth in a standard Boulevardier build.
Yes! This is my alltime favorite cocktail, and I use Elijah Craig Bourbon or Knob Creek Rye myself.
One of my go to drinks when tired of old fashioned. I like it with rye, and yes, more whiskey, and a little less sweet varmouth gives it best balance for me. If I'm feeling in a mood I add some cherry liquor, or Benedictine to change it up.

Negroni spring and summer boulevardier fall and winter. These are the drinks that got me into cocktails

The Boulevardier is one of my goto cocktails! Great episode!!
I do love it. It is my fav drink :) I am doing it with this ratio 60ml burbon and 40ml campari and wermut
This has been my go-to cocktail ever since a Las Vegas bartender introduced me to it, but his variation adds chocolate bitters. Today I found out that variation has the name “Left Hand”. 🖐️
Love the Boulevardier! Love the new merch! BUT HEY -- who is the artist for your fabbo prints?? you didn't mention who created them!
Erskine Gwynne was part of the legendary Vanderbilt family. He had a fast and brief life. Kind of a buzz kill, but a great drink!
Been mixing at a 2:1:3/4 to provide a drier finish. Also using 100 proof rye (Uncle Nearest) for a more spirit forward drink. Love this cocktail!
Love the Boulevardier. Absolutely one of my top 3 cocktails.
I have been making this drink for 5 years......add it some charred oak fir 3 weeks...so smooth
The Boulevardier is my go to cocktail. And one I judge any new bar I try by.
had my first one the other day, I was planning to do an old pal, but I didn’t have any dry vermouth. So glad I made this one instead, it’s way better better!

My first Boulevardier was at the Green Mill in Chicago. One of my favorites.
My go-to drink! It’s also great with a quarter ounce pama. Adds to the juiciness of the cocchi vermouth
I put a couple of dashes of cacao bitters in mine. My go-to drink before dinner
I am loving your videos, so easy to follow and your recipes turn out great cocktails every time.
My favorite whiskey drink is the boulevardier and your suggestion for a larger part whiskey really brings it forward.

It's better with rye. Try it with a splash of orange liquor like Combier and a dash of aromatic bitter. yummy
One of my favorites! I've never tried it with the flamed orange oil though... Gotta up my game!
Going to try that tonight!
The smoky spicy cherry
- Lime + tajin on rim
- muddle two jalapeño peppers in shaker
- Mezcal (2oz 60ml)
- Cherry Heering (1oz 30ml)
- lemon juice (1oz 30ml)
- homemade grenadine (1/2oz 15ml)
- shake 10-15 seconds
- double strain over big cube
- garnish with cherry + express lemon oil
It has become my favorite and would love for you to try it!
Cheers!
We love you and Az too. 😉💜🍸
I just made one and having it with a cigar. OMG. Old Fashioned is my favourite BUT this one might actually be edging it out!! Your amounts are perfectly balanced. Just excellent!
My twist on the Boulevardier is to sub in Aperol for the Campari. It lightens up the drink a bit and is perfect for a summer cocktail! Cheers!

Definitely one of my winter go-to drinks. I use a 2/1/1 ratio as well. Got a black hoodie last year and it's amazing... Cheers!
One of my favorite cocktails of all time
This is one of my go-to cocktails! I just taught it to the bartender here in Veracruz, MX
I speak french, and I confirm your pronunciation of Boulevardier is all good!
Swap Campari for Contratto in this and the Negroni. It’s so much better. Definitely in my top five cocktails.
Also, I build them in the glass and drink them on the rocks. I enjoy the dilution over time.
We've made this several times now including at a party last night. Love it. Thank you for all the great videos!
This drink is one of my favorites! Thanks! I've been curious to see what if would be like substituting Aperol and Cynar.
Hah!...I ordered a boulevardier last night and introduced four friend to it and they all loved it (the penicillin too).
We were running 1:1:1's so I'm going to have to give that 2:1:1 version a run.
Thanks.

I prefer the 2:1:1 ratios too…plus it fills my glass better😊
I’ve adapted this a bit in a way folks seem to like. 1 oz Rittenhouse rye, .75 oz Cointreau, .75 oz Campari, .75 oz sweet vermouth of choice. 😋
Never been a big friend of Campari, but this is just my style and has just exactly the right balance between the ingredients. Just love it! It's my favorite go-to drink.
Love it with Aperol, too.
Great video as always! I have been subbing the Campari for Select Aperitivo recently and have been in love. I feel like it is a bit easier for guests to drink who don't quite like any heavy bitterness.
Great tip. It’s a bit too bitter for me as well. Will give this a try.
Easily top 5 cocktails. LOVE a boulevardier
I recommend trying Cynar as an alternative to Campari in this drink. So good.
Enjoyed this cocktail at Yvonne’s while in Boston.

A fave of mine (2:1:1), though I use rye at home (I order it out quite a bit, so I have had many with bourbon).
Love the boulevardier, just wowed some people at the liquor store the other day when they asked why I was buying whiskey and Campari. I like to use rye whiskey for a less sweet cocktail.

I will have to add Campari to my bar for this one. We are enjoying a Manhattan right now with homemade bourbon cherries. Added this to my cocktail book. Thanks!
One of my favorites! Love it when Oz chines in.
It’s probably my favorite cocktail, although my staple recipe is Rye whiskey + Ramazzotti + Cocchi Vermouth. Much preferred over Campari in them.
Probably the best cocktail in the world ❤
Love this drink, and so glad you got around to doing this episode. Besides the bourbon, I do the opposite - choosing a bit richer Amaro instead of Campari, and a simpler vermouth instead of Cocchi. I never find this at bars but the moment I had it the first time I loved it!
The absolute best bourbon cocktail in my opinion!!
I love a Boulivardier! I use Dolin vermouth, but I'll have to try flaming the orange, since I like fire.
I am going to try the flamed orange on my next Boulevardier. It is one of my favorites. I also like the variation called the Smoking Hand with a little Islay scotch and chocolate bitters in it. Complex doesn't even begin to describe all the layers of flavor.
Been knocking these back for a few weeks now. This drink is going to be a centerpiece of the whiskey tasting in doing this weekend.
Sounds like a fun weekend. Cheers
my favorite! I make mine with mole bitters, and/or a touch of ancho reyes liqueur
This is by far my favorite drink! I learned about it on a previous video and have been drinking it ever since. Have only been to one establishment that knew it by name - everywhere else it’s a Negroni but with bourbon. I’ll have to start specifying the rations next. Thank you for the experience.
Pairs nicely with a quality cigar
The Boulevardier was my introduction to Campari - just an absolutely delicious showcase for the complex bitterness. It's amazing that such an old, simple drink can be so good.
The simple classics are my favorites. Cheers
Infuse the Campari with some cocoa nibs. One of my favorites!
am curious who made the artwork! it looks great!
Yeah, I usually make mine with Signal Hill.
Rye drinkers unite!
I made this for my wife a month or so ago and she loved it.
One of my favourite cocktails!
Love the cocktail! Use a big high-proof bourbon if you dare, or use the high-proof and serve on the rocks. BTW, our Lab cracked a tooth eating ice, beware... not recommended.
More eye candy and she has good commentary! I'm learning so much now. The next time I go out I can order something more than Coke and Rum.
Great video! This is one of my very favourite cocktails. And this version is the best, cheers!
This is my go to cocktail when I go out
