I only got to see a partial eclipse and used some old welding goggles. I took out the lenses of two pairs and saw the printed strength of A.I-5HG on one, and UPH-11 on another. I read online that layering the glass gives the recommended strength of 14+ by NASA (15 in this case based on what I've read). Is this true or did I really fry my eye balls permanently?

saw my first total eclipse today. it was cool. i was a bit underwhelmed by it due to the over hype all over the interwebs, but i will still note it as a very significant event in my life.
It was about a 2 hour drive to reach totality for me. It was absolutely the most amazing and humbling thing I have seen in my entire life. An older woman that came with us to see it for the first time also claimed that it was also the most beautiful thing she had ever witnessed aside from the birth of her children. Truly an experience I will never forget.
Thanks, Daven! I was surprised at how dim it got in Canada. I work outdoors, and kept wanting to take my sunglasses off, only to realize that I didn't wear any. It eventually dawned on me that it must have been due to the eclipse.

Luckies. It was covered in clouds for the beginning, though we did catch glimpses through them regularly, and during the totality, it was covered just perfectly, though the beautiful area we were in was amazing to watch get super dark and super light again quickly. Though after totality was just fine for us. I mean, overall, it was a great experience and makes me just want to see the next totality even more, so I'm not really mad at the clouds.
When I bought my glasses for the eclipse it came with a book that told most of this information in a more general way. The far in depth information was fantastic.
After about a week's worth of rain and thunderstorms, I was lucky that the skies decided to clear up in time for me to watch the eclipse. The funny thing was telling my neighbors that it was actually my second solar eclipse because the first one I remember was in the late 80's/early 90's when I was living in Seattle. (Turns out, it happened in 1990.)
Thank you guys very much for this. I couldn't make the 6 hour drive to an area with totality and on top of that had to get to work a bit before the greatest amount of the sun was covered where I live.

Unfortunately some clouds blocked my view of the eclipse much of the time. But They did clear enough for me to get an obstructed view at about the time it was at his maximum. IT was only a partial eclipse in my area but I was in grade school the last time I saw a solar eclipse also partial. Someday I hope to see a total eclipse.
I studied aerospace engineering, but I don't know 100%. Pretty sure they spin the same directiont hough. Otherwise a whole lot of parts would need two differnt machines to manufacture them. Why this question?

For anyone who missed the eclipse of 2017. It was like seeing the Eye of God looking down from Heaven. if you only saw a partial eclipse, try to see the next total one in seven years. It's a religious experience. The total eclipse is so much more impressive than the partial. the earth turns to night, the stars come out (not all of them), it gets noticeably cooler, crickets begin to chirp, and the diamond ring is amazing. I 'm hooked. I had a ball. the family I was with couldn't stop talking about it. Seven years is nothing. so try to see it. The eclipse was incredible, words can't do it justice.
I was really salty when it happened. A big cloud decided to roll in and stick around for the hours of the eclipse. And no I couldnt move because I was at work. We were allowed to try to look at it but couldn't because of the clouds...
It was very beautiful. Unfortunately Indiana didn't get the totality, but it did cover till a sliver. Plus my friend got a great picture of the crescent moon shadows under a tree.

I had proper welding lens and everything, but like always i managed to forget the eclipse.. I swear anytime something amazing is supposed to happen, it's like oh that was today? Well at least i'm not blind?
i realised the eclipse had started and didnt want to miss it. I realised that the eclipse wouldnt last and realising that just two days before when i looked at a light through a balloon i could see its features clear as day, litterally, despite the normal glare from a light bulb. I figured this principle would work and testing it briefly i was able to then share the eclipse with my girlfriend and brother thanks to a quick thought on how stuff works, it was awesome. its silly but its a story i think id pass on to my kids about remembering what you learn. anyway it was pretty funny how people thought id miss out on the eclipse when all it took was a thin stretched piece of rubber fixed with air in inside to see the perfect eclipsein its completeness. on the otherhand i feel like everyone else thought i was an idiot and i feel like theyre the idiots, i got to see it for free. everyone else bought the glasses for 5$. lol

I drove 200 miles to see the eclipse. It was well worth the trip.
I got to see this in person as I live right on the line of totality. It was amazingly beautiful. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

We drove all night to see the eclipse in person and it was worth every mile (both ways!)

Great video! Just for reference, make sure you lube up the camera stand or something because I can tell when you move it that it needed some force.
