Still using the wrong title I see. How can you be taken seriously when you cannot get basic facts correct? Now I will spell it out simply for you... THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND HAS NO POWERS AS SHE DOES NOT EXIST. THE 1707 ACTS OF UNION ABOLISHED THE ENGLISH MONARCHY. Please answer this question... Which of these are you? Just someone who is a bit slow to learn, a troll who has set out to antagonise the UK citizens of Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland, or an ignorant and arrogant little Englander? Unfortunately it is people like you that are the cancerous downside of the IT age. Spreading your misinformation and misrepresenting yourself as some kind of authority. Frankly you should be banned from You Tube
Are you trying to comment on The Queen of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland? There hasn't been a Queen of England since Elizabeth I in the mid 17th century.
Correct in principle Karl, but the last Queen of England was not Elizabeth Tudor (who died in 1603 not the mid 17th century) rather it was Queen Anne. She was simultaneously Queen of England and Queen of Scotland from 1702 to 1707. From then on she was Queen of Great Britain. Between 1603 and 1707 the crowns were separate but held by the same person. For example Queen Elizabeth's successor was referred to as James VI of Scotland and I of England.
Her consort can move one step behind her but only one step at a time, though, like the queen, in any direction. Knights of the realm can leap frog obstacles.
Queen of Australia can also do that with our military as we swore allegiance to her. That's why we have Her Majesty's Australian Ships. Lotta people forget she's our Queen too.
@@DavBlc7 may this never happen. You're going to replace her with an indirectly elected figurehead clown who divides the country and does a poor job as head of state.
I heard one story about the Queen popping out to buy some items the kitchen was short on. The lady behind the counter said to her, "I must say this but you do look so like our dear Queen". And she replied, "How very reassuring".
A purely fictional "Queen Story" has HM stopped by a policeman for speeding. Upon being asked by the officer for some ID , knowing she does not require a drivers license, she pulls a 5 Pound note out of her famous handbag shows it to the officer and says:"Look, this is me, my picture is on all of them". QED....
I don't think she can call "checkmate" on her own king. (We're talking chess here, not the fact that he is NOT married to a king.) She can ONLY call "checkmate," on an opposing king. On a similar note, "checkmate," originally meant Shah Mat, or the Shah is dead. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkmate steve

To quote Richard Dimbleby, from longer ago than I care to remember: "The importance of the Queen is not in the power she has but the fact that by holding those powers she denies them to others". It is widely rumored that Magaret Thatcher wanted to declare war on Argentina when they invaded the Falklands but the Queen refused. So, forcing Thatcher to send an expeditionary force to relieve the islands. If it had been up to Thatcher, the army would have invaded Argentina.
@@percyweasley9301 And it costs about a third what the French presidency costs and we get a lot more for the money. It is also cheaper than the Italian presidency and the Polish presidency who have similar constitutional powers.
@@TheMementoOfElysia With regard to the comment about the Queen's power, the source of it is the closing comments made by Richard Dimbleby in the 1969 BBC documentary on the Royal Family. As far as I know, it has never been rebroadcast and is not available commercially, though I was told that there were some copies of it circulating. With regard to the Thatcher rumor, that has been floating around since the days of John Major. I first heard it from a senior member of the armed forces who was at a dinner party I attended, about two years after Thatcher lost power. I have. since heard it a couple of times from other sources.
It sounds like her role is basically as a failsafe. If the government spirals completely out of control and the people are about to stage a revolution... she'll take action against the government on their behalf to preserve the country. As for her advisory role, it makes sense too - unlike most politicians whose terms are limited, she has an incentive to care about UK's very long term stability. That's the value of her perspective. I do find it scary how much theoretical power she has, but as the video made clear - if she just started using it, she'd lose it. The only way she can use all that power is if the people are completely behind her, which would be the sign of a real crisis.
In a sense, we're all limited in what we can do under any given circumstances. There are always consequences to what we do wrong. I think Her Majesty has discharged her duties extremely well all these years.
I don't find the amount of power she holds to be scary, she could literally be seen as the entire planet's ruler, she is as a matter of fact the head honcho, she can declare war on anyone, if anyone dared do unto her any harm, her next in line, would probably make sure that the nation of said inhabitants were eradicated. This includes all 192 nations on this planet. She is also technically the richest person alive, seeing as more than half of the world is her ground, in name appointed by god, and everyone is merely borrowing her land.
cmconley33 why would we want someone with super powers as our leader,we literally had a war and threw the brits out some 200 years ago because the founding fathers refuse to bow to a king or ruled by queen..nobody should be above the law and good for them seeing their queen as above the law, when she enters the us it’s a whole different story we do have laws here and no king nor a queen is above it
bruce david ‘Brits’ It’s a whole different story because you have a nutjob ‘business man’ running your country and you enjoy making people like Kim Kardashian famous. smh.
Queen Elizabeth is the living proof of quantum mechanics. Her powers are simultaneously existant and non-existant. Hence, she has all the power and no power at the same time.
Yes because as an Englishman with all kinds of ancestry including Celtic they should say The Queen Of The United Kingdom And The Commonwealth. They’ve stuck with us through thick and thin despite being able to leave if they so desired.
Why do other sovern nations maintain this ? What benefits each side ? I don't get it. It would be so strange to live in some African or Pacific Island nation and have a foreign monarch
They should say the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth realms.Commonwealth realm is a sovereign state which has Elizabeth II as its monarch and head of state. They should say that cause people might think she is the queen of every member of the Commonwealth when in reality she is not even the queen of half of the commonwealth
3:20. Very slight correction (though I could be wrong): The Queen is not above the law; She *is* the law. Being prosecuted is you against the crown. This is why she can't be prosecuted: That would be the crown vs the crown which doesn't make sense. Though she could of course place herself in a jail if she wanted to.
Yet have her sign a decree that every 18th day of the month if it falls on a Thursday each British born citizen can force feed a pound of rashers and blood sausage to a Muslim of their choice and you’ll find she has no power to do so because parliament is the legislature.
@EDGE He meant the British monarchy is still alive and well and still holds power basically didn't lose anything unlike some other monarchies like France Russia, china, Germany etc.
So, basically the queen is still actually in charge. There’s this public perception that her role is more ceremonial but turns out to just not be the case.
@@ewanfps This is of course speculation on my part but, if her office did have a lot of power, wouldn't a part of it be used to conceal that it exists if that's what she/"they" wanted in the first place? Isn't that actually the whole point? Again, I don't know, I am just speculating, but still.
No Parliament is. The Sovereign reigns at the invitation of Parliament. Parliament literally gave them more power than themselves for a very simple reason. That way you could blame the monarch for any issues arising in your government. Unfortunately for parliament, the Monarchs after Queen Anne really weren’t interested in governing significantly, that’s how the office of PM came into being. It was due to the refusal of George the First to actually legislatively govern and deposing him over not doing anything wasn’t possible because he did participate in some functions of Government. The government of the UK fell into place with the lessons of history. It wasn’t some contrived untested theory on how a nation can run. While there are a lot of potential “Powers” the King could use, it just wouldn’t make sense unless you had an absolutely deranged or infiltrated parliament. Plus if misused to a high enough degree, the public would demand they be restrained. A healthy Constitutional Monarchy is a very boring but stable State Apparatus.
Interesting! After being told for years that she was just a figurehead it turns out she is all powerful. The fact that she uses such restraint makes me respect her more. Thanks for the very informative video!
Richard Forester she isn't even vaguely close to all powerful. The history of political power in England is partially a long struggle between the monarch and Parliament ever since King John and the Magna Carta. Despite some ups and downs the flow of power is quite obviously been from the monarch to Parliament because Parliament has the ultimate trump card money. The English and later British people can't be taxed without their consent and only Parliament can give it. No surprise English colonists would want representation with their taxation. Several monarchs have dissolved Parliament and tried to rule themselves but have ended up having to recall it when they needed money. Controlling the Armed Forces is less impressive if you can't pay for them. Not to mention just because something is theoretically possible doesn't mean anyone would obeying orders if a monarch started giving them. Attempting to use most of these powers would probably result in losing them.
Mark Antill Technically the Bank of England is owned by the queen and in so doing holds around a £billion of cold hard cash. Which may never fight a war.... but it's still a lot of power.
From what I understand the bank of England is a trading name that has no real link to England other then that it trades in England. As far as I know the Queen has a share in it alongside the Rothschilds however they own more of it then her.
The Bank of England was nationalised in 1946. In 1998, it became an independent public organisation, wholly owned by the Treasury Solicitor on behalf of HMG (the British Government), with independence in setting monetary policy.
its more like common sense. If she started flexing dictatorial muscle, there would be a revolt within months. The British society is too advanced to be ruled by a dictatorship.
Angga Pramudya You’re not living here in UK i see. the monarchy is a very important part of our country and to the commonwealth. The monarchy will always be here. THE CROWN MUST ALWAYS WIN.
The British monarchy has, for centuries, shown an amazing ability to adapt to the changing landscape to ensure its continued existence. It continues to thrive in what is essentially a marketing role today.
finao o Yeah throught history, British Monarchs seized control in order for them to continue existance. I think a large part of this ideology was the French revolution and how the French monarchs collapsed due to not giving up some power.
This is one of the things I send to people who ask how powerful Queen Elizabeth II is. Thank you Simon, and all other hands involved in writing, producing, editing, and distribution! Keep up the good work.

If the USA and Britain went to war Australia has to side with the USA. It is apart of an agreement made in WW2 during the war in the pacific and Coral Sea.
@phillip perkins exactly! But when you analyze it, it is not only the Australians that agreed to that agreement themselves but with the Crown's approval also since they are technically the commander in chief. Which means when the brits goes vs US, there is no way Aus would side with the US

What powers do the Spanish, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Belgian, & Dutch Monarchs have. As well as the Principalities of Andorra, Monaco, and Liechtenstein, and the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg. Pretty much it would be interesting to see what power the remaining nobility of Europe have in and out of their respective realms.
She is a very wise woman to realize that true power isn't the display of such power, but rather influence created by not using it. Our world leaders could learn a lot from her.
Oh so a person is only what they are titled or what they do, does that just apply to women in your world or are men also subject to such reductionism? I would think that what mattered more was how that power was exercised.
I'm an American and don't know very much about the Queen, but if I were visiting in the UK and she asked me to do something within my power (and within reason, I wouldn't kill someone or commit treason) I'd probably do it. She just carries a lot of respect that you'd expect from royalty. However, I wouldn't get Donald Trump a glass of water if I had to take 3 steps to get it.
The possibility of her being replaced with a trump like character is the reason Australia chose to keep her instead of voting to become a republic. While it would be great to have one of our own citizens in the roll (we kinda do anyway) but with her we have extra security & protection of the system
She wouldn't though. Britain is still pretty divided on BREXIT. Just under half the country wanted to remain, and the between those who wanted to leave people cannot decide if we should negotiate a deal or leave everything. She's wise enough to not get involved.

I'm totally impressed with the move made by the British monarchy to establish a democracy while retaining these powers ...all the while remaining inconspicuous since then
Even if she doesn't exercise her powers it still makes her a dictator. The fact that she's above her government, law and people as well as punish anyone that she wanted to makes her a dictator on paper.
@@Chopper8472 That's what made her a Queen you mean. A monarch is above the law because the law is carried out in the Crowns name. A dictator is actually someone who seized control of a nation by force. An autarch is a leader with absolute authority. It's easy to confuse the terms but it's important to remember the distinctions.
Charles is taking over soon, so if he took over he'd push for 100% renewable in 15 years, though with the Gov there it's going to be 25 years as the Gov is talking about.

@John Saunders come now Mr Saunders there is no need to resort to such vulgarity. I view her majesty as a symbol of British culture and high society and there is no issue with having her there as a technical head of state.

Yes, she is kind of passive Monarch. The power exists in law, and she could be more active (like her son Charles is) but she always takes this relaxed, advisory role and doesn't interfere or get directly involved in politics. She is really a perfect model of a Constitutional Monarch performing all these endless duties and an astonishing amount of charity work alongside her regular official duties and she never complains... even when the gov took the Royal Yacht Britannia away and slashed the Royal budget 10 fold down to just £30 odd million a year and refused to pay for renovations on Buckingham Palace even! OK the Royal's are top of social class in UK but it shows they have the same budget constraints and challenges as ordinary folks, but just on a larger scale :-) Also they were born into this role and didn't ask for it ..it's a hard life really endless duties and very little reward just summer holiday's at their private Estate in Scotland. Some may say Buckingham Palace is akin to a gilded prison. It's not like the Queen and go shopping in the city, go on holiday, spend money or do any of the spontaneous things we commoners take for granted. Last time she tried to drive herself to a nearby village the police escorted quickly her back to Buckingham Palace! That's why so many respect her and like her in the UK and around the world. She is a very stabilizing figure in the UK and very wise according to past Prime Ministers and world leaders.

The idea being that kids whose names end with W, X, Y or Z shouldn't always be thinking they are "last." But I never heard back and she never adopted this idea. So now I'm bringing this idea to a RUclips comment thread, where I probably won't even get one thumb's up vote. The nearest landowner to her is the Russian state at 4.4 billion acres. She owns all of the UK, Canada, and other commonwealth countries. I always wondered why in Canada, naval vessels are called "HMCS and ship's name" standing for Her Majesty's Canadian ship. Our prosecutors in criminal courts are called the Crown. Our equivalent to the FBI is the RCMP - Royal Canadian Mounted Police. If a lawyer practices for so many years with no blemishes on his record, he receives his Queen's Counsel (Q.C.) designation. Our Prime Ministers are sworn in pledging allegiance to the Queen and not to the Canadian Constitution. They also pledge to keep her secrets. She has a representative in each province (Lieutenant Governors) who report to the Governor General, who reports directly to the Queen. Her picture is above the blackboard in all classrooms. We still sing "God Save the Queen". The BRF often visit Canada. I guess they're coming to check on their property like any land owner would. So there is far more to the BRF than we are told and that meets the eye.
She's not immune to violent revolution and dictatorship isn't looked upon kindly in the modern world. Sure, the reason she doesn't use her power is that she chooses not to, but there are reasons behind that choice too. As the old saying goes, no man rules alone.
Most of the powers here are what in the US are called executive powers, and here are called Prerogative powers. And they are exercised - some of them often, but by Her Government, not her. That is how the British constitution works - power shared between parliament and Her Majesty's Government, who are all accountable to parliament. We must also remember that in the UK, precedent is everything. Since no monarch has exercised prerogative powers without the advice of elected government in centuries, it is *unthinkable* that it would ever happen again.
James MacInnes Copeland no, she doesn’t. If she started to override democracy in a serious fashion then the UK would have a revolution and become a republic in about a week.

Don McClelland That's because the US don't want you to know too much. Almost any info that doesn't put America on a high pedestal isn't worth telling. Like the fact that you just left the Vietnam war, when in reality you actually lost.
The content of this video & comments are making me wonder exactly what power she has in her former colonies that are still part of the Commonwealth (like Australia & Canada). Could we have a video on that please? (& please like if you agree so this can be seen by the channel)
Lilac Lizard The short answer is none. The Prime Minister chooses the Governor General, usually a well respected and apolitical citizen, recommends the name to The Queen. She agrees, which is a formality. The GG exercises the Royal powers. In practice the GG is the head of state, though nominally the Queen has the title.
Michel, that's my thoughts too, but I'm curious if the dormant powers discussed in the video are even possible in theory in countries like Australia or Canada
Lilac Lizard Those powers exist in case of a crisis. The last time was the 1981 constitutional crisis. The GG told the PM that without the support of the provinces he would feel compelled to dissolve parliament. At that point the PM had two choices, 1) accept the dissolution and go into an elecrion, or2) challenge the GG*s authority at the Supreme Court. The provinces rallied behind the PM, so we will never know. Interestingly, the fact that the constitutional act of 1982 reaffirms the presence of the Monarch in the Canadian system probably reinforces the GG*s reserve powers. That being said I don*t see the Queen ever exercising those powers, though I can see the GG, under extraordinary circumstances, exercising them.
Michel, similar happened in Australia in 1975 & the GG dismissed the parliament, but there was no talking or warning, there were issues brewing that needed to be resolved, but then out of the blue he was dismissed. Just before it happened though, he had been asserting Australia's independence over both England and America & even questioning if the American Pine Gap base should be in Australia (Pine Gap to this day is REQUIRED by the US for drone & spy satellite control over Asia & the Middle East). Th GG was very much "in with" the CIA & American and British Intelligence. So with all of that, it gets messy to know if a situation like in Canada may have occurred if not for external pressure. It's also possible that the Canadian situation was influenced by the earlier Australian situation - making the dismissal threat seem much more real & making everyone more willing to negotiate to prevent the Australian situation happening there. The reserve powers shouldn't be needed if parliament acts like adults, but we only need look at America today to know that parliament doesn't always act like adults, so some sort of back up really is a good idea & I know I'd trust someone appointed with the Queen's consent needed more than someone appointed purely by politicians (which would undoubtedly become political) & if you go to a popular vote, then money & campaigns become a factor & ...well again just look at America to see what can go wrong!
Lilac Lizard I suppose that if we accept the idea of a Head of State with reserve powers, we also accept the idea that it is possible that the Head of state would use those powers. The fact that in Canada they have never been used does not eliminate them.

Yes,but does the rest of the royal family have any power?

Good analysis
Mariya M Very smart and thoughtful comment. Never thought of it that way, you have changed my way of looking at the matter, thank you. 👍🏻
In a sense, we're all limited in what we can do under any given circumstances. There are always consequences to what we do wrong. I think Her Majesty has discharged her duties extremely well all these years.
Very interesting political theory
I don't find the amount of power she holds to be scary, she could literally be seen as the entire planet's ruler, she is as a matter of fact the head honcho, she can declare war on anyone, if anyone dared do unto her any harm, her next in line, would probably make sure that the nation of said inhabitants were eradicated. This includes all 192 nations on this planet. She is also technically the richest person alive, seeing as more than half of the world is her ground, in name appointed by god, and everyone is merely borrowing her land.

It is
No Parliament is.

@John Saunders no need to be rude to her majesty
@John Saunders come now Mr Saunders there is no need to resort to such vulgarity. I view her majesty as a symbol of British culture and high society and there is no issue with having her there as a technical head of state.
@John Saunders please refrain from using inappropriate language if you are unable to maintain or for that matter even begin a civil discussion.
Queen Elizabeth *Using her powers wisely*
The spirit of Queen Victoria: *Just use it*
It speaks volumes when a person has that much power yet doesn't use and only keeps it if desperately needed for the good of the people!!
Yeah I think you fail to grasp the situation. If she started using her power, the monarchy would be abolished. Plain and simple. No one since Anne REALLY reigned as well as ruled.
@BesteKanaal1 In a public Poll in Scotland, The idea of independence was not popular. Just because the SNP is popular does not mean all of there policies are. also northern ireland does not want to leave, Majority of northern Irish consider themselves British
Your the muppets who don't realise that family has done nothing but opress and colonise
She's not even u English Mongo's blood line shes German
also scary too that the UK is technicly a an Absolute Dictorship
She really is a rare breed. Such maturity and discretion over almost a century. Even if she doesn't exercise her power, it must be a bit heady to know legally she knows that she possesses the power of, well, a full Queen.

I once advised the Queen (I'm not joking, she had a website where you could submit ideas) to ask teachers, on every second year, to read attendance lists in reverse alphabetical order instead of regular alphabetical order. The idea being that kids whose names end with W, X, Y or Z shouldn't always be thinking they are "last." But I never heard back and she never adopted this idea. So now I'm bringing this idea to a RUclips comment thread, where I probably won't even get one thumb's up vote. Layth Alkhaer Actually you've missed the point. We have our own constitution and flag and the Royals are actually ours directly as well. They do quite a decent job and the Parliamentary -Confederation system here works fairly well most of the time. If she got out of hand like Emperor Trump to our south, we'd likely quickly have a referendum and have a President to take the ceremonial role of our Monarch, i.e. a bit like the German / French system. It's the Commonwealth meanwhile and I like having the adults supervising our governments.
