Im afrId that the stuff I had þastes far better than the stuff you experienced? Before she died in a Durban Nursing Home, my Great Aunt always used to send us a few packets of Eet Som Mors and they tasted a lot better than yours.
It seems like you got a really old box of snacks from South Africa. The chalk type of flavour is what happens when chocolates are old as they do not look like the ones if i were to open them now(no chalk flavour or appearance). Plus the Ouma rusk has to be eaten after being dipped in Tea or Coffee. The Eet-sum-mor biscuits also looked old.
I imagine there's probably a bunch of heat and pressure changes (that commercial food shipping can better avoid) that don't do great things to them either.
Barry & Ashens... As a South African I can honestly say that most of the snacks you guys ate might have expired... Which explainst the chalky and wood taste... You guys need to come to the source and try them fresh
"Lekker"!! Tennis biscuits are ELITE. Now find a recipe for peppermint crisp tart, for your tennis biscuits and peppermint crisp and taste a true South African favourite 🇿🇦
One of my favourite thing to do in other countries is try their snacks. I found out years ago that a lot of confectioneries are formulated for the climate theyre in. North european chocolate has tons of milk so it would melt and sour in hot weather! So a flake in ireland and the uk tastes completely different to australian, american or south african cadbury!
In the UK we still have old fashioned sweet shops where you can still buy treacle toffee, amongst other types. My local one is Teddy Greys. It’s still made the same way it was made a few centuries ago on trays, and the confectioner has a little toffee hammer to break it up before weighing it out. It is so sticky you’re chewing it forever and yes, it would pull out any loose fillings or teeth for that matter.
Peppermint crisps are the greatest. I can't believe you've never heard of them before. In Australia we crush them in the packet and then scatter the shards on top of a pavlova. Fantastic!
I wonder if everything is powdery because it’s made for a much hotter climate than the Uk, so because it’s colder than it’s normally meant to be it’s changed the consistency
Hi, I'm from South Africa. Cadbury's flake is wonderful, you must let it almost resolve in your mouth. Don't chew the chocolate Rusks need a cup of tea to dunk it in. I think the white chocolate is very sweet The peppermint crisp we use to make a fridge tart. Delicious
I remember you doing a Finnish treats taste test with your mom a decade ago. Would love to see one with ashens! I could even be willing to gather and send some if you guys would be up for it :)
Their chocolate has to survive higher temperatures than ours, so will contain things like paraffin wax and other ingredients to make it more shelf stable and less likely to melt at room temperature. Thus making it more soapy/chalky/flavourless. There used to be a mint cracknel bar in the UK I think in the 70s/80s and it wasn't like that one in the video. It was more like a mint flavoured dime bar, or daim or whatever it's called now, with a slightly green toffee with chocolate around it.
No, our chocolate is just normal chocolate. The chalkiness seen in this video is not normal and most likely due to age/storage conditions during shipping. I've dealt with many a melty chocolate bar though in the peak of summer but fridges exist to cool it down a bit.

We used to have the Mint crisp here in the UK. I am 57 and it was a childhood treat. It’s a shame that they have stopped making so many good sweets. Great memories.
5:45 Think it says Baker's Man, since the brand name appears to be Baker's. Also reminiscent of the old kids' rhyme 🎶 patty cake, patty cake, baker's man🎶
The subtitles on this are great. "I'm just going to shove the whole thing in my mouth, which is not something to take out of context (thanks Stuart lol)". Also, Stuart, I love that t-shirt.
Tennis biscuits as well as Marie biscuits are a very popular biscuit options we use for a crust for pies or tarts and desserts. Also, rusks are meant to be with a cup of tea or coffee :)
Love the video Barry! If you ever spot Mrs Ball's chutney make sure to get a bottle - it's the one South African thing I cant bbq without! (Tesco sometimes stocks it)
Love how you guys still do these sort of videos. Keeping old school youtube alive! Note to Barry, slow the videos down! We’d be happy to see you guys talk a bit more about what you’re eating and see your reactions to each food.
I do think the choccies might have not survived the trip well (or the shop didn't store them properly) the Jelly Tot bar is also hit or miss quality wise (also just a sugar overload usually), peppermint crisp is ace especially if you can find enough to make a peppermint crisp tart :) The original flavour toffee I feel is like a marmite thing 50/50 love it or hate it, personally not a fan of it either (the cola flavour ones etc are quite nice, not sure if Wilson toffees and those Champion ones are the same tbh never thought about it much). Really really surprised that you didn't know what a rusk is, since it goes well dipped in coffee and tea I had this stereotypical idea that the Brits would have it as a staple. Not a big biscuit guy, don't usually ever buy the mini biscuits so can't comment on them, tennis biscuits usually buy the normal sized ones to make a peppermint crisp tart with. Cheers man, didn't expect to see some South African sweets pop up today :)
One of the best ways to enjoy a peppermint crisp, is to cut off both ends just slightly and use it as a “straw” to drink your favourite milk drink. Mine was vanilla milkshake- boom!! You just levelled-up your shake and you have a chocolate to devour too. You’re welcome 😉
I used to manage a pub/ restaurant that was owned by a South African. It had a few South African dishes on the menu like bunny chow, Potjieko and mint crisp dessert. It got so many comments and the bunny chow confused people thinking it was bunny inside. The mint crisps were so hard to find and so the dish was often not available and people would be so upset!
The reason for the texture issue is due to climate. It's much hotter in south Africa so you need to adjust the formula for it not to melt on the shelf!
So the “normal jelly tots” you gave away are actually quite different to English jelly tots as you will find with a lot of South African stuff like their Fanta etc Ps South African cream soda is very different to English cream soda it’s also bright green
The one thing South Africa has over the UK is Cadbury Astros, they’re like smarties or M&Ms but with a biscuit ball inside. The UK discontinued them when I was a kid and I can’t find them anywhere unless I import them myself.
11:17, we used to have those in Australia, not sure if we still do, haven't looked for them. used to like them as a kid in the 80s until I had a different peppermint flavoured thing here that triggered a severe asthma attack & then I couldn't eat anything peppermint for about 20 years.
As a South African, you must have rusks with coffee - dunk/dip for 5 to 10 seconds (until soaked through, but without falling apart in your coffee) it’s the only way to have rusks
I am realizing now Australia really has more in common brand and snack wise (quality aside) with South Africa than we do UK. Did not expect to learn that today
That abomination called Caramello, from Cadbury in Australia, was reintroduced into the UK a few years ago. It was originally made in the UK in the 1950s/60s, and then production was stopped because it was not popular. Then, it was picked up by Cadbury down under. Quite a few chocolate bars went the same way. Cadbury's Tiffin is now only available in shops that sell food from the Republic of Ireland, where it's still made. Cost's around £1 mores than it does in Ireland.
Here in australia i think we have the best cadbury chocolate, the bakers lemon crisp biscuits are the best and the peppermint crisp… i would have thought you had that in the uk. We have had it here for decades
Rich Tea (with a bit of vanilla) are called Marie / Maria / Marietta, etc., pretty much everywhere outside Great Britain. The strangest part is they were invented (and named) in England.
The reason its not as sweet as you were expecting is because they put alot less sugar in they're sweets than we do (US, UK and Aus). Theyre pallets aren't accustomed to that much sugar.
Oh and it's mini biscuits because it's like a snack pack, we actually have the big ones in store. Sometime, not everyone, but some people, put some good margerine like Stork or Flora inbetween 2 Marie biscuits and then dunk it in milk coffee, but you need to be quick, it dissolves quickly and can fall into your coffee. 😅
I'm also from PE, but living in Dubai. I think something went wrong with the items in this box, because those snacks are usually tops. Unless quality's gone down since I last had some. Is the Cadbury factory still going in PE?
Don't know if youtube generate them or you add them in but the subtitles were adding in a lot more lines/words then what was actually said. Usually they shorten/change words but there were quite a few lines as if they were programmed with a script and displayed them despite you not actually saying the line/words etc
I heard that if you go without sugar for a long time then when you do get some it tastes alot sweeter. Africa consumes alot less sugar than the UK as a daily average. So maybe this is why they can get away with "dulling" the flavours. Same as the USA dont like alot of our foods. On adverage they more than double our intake.
Those Champion toffees are molasses flavour - the most polarising ones. Most people hate them, but the taste does kinda grow on you if you do exposure therapy. When you're 8 and you only have a few Rands pocket money, that therapy is free with the price of the toffees. When I was a kid my favourites were the pink ones - I'm not sure what the flavour of those was, but it was aggressively fruity. Ive not had them since then. I'm in my 40s - which should give you an idea of how long we've been subjected to those sweets. TV Bars are my favourite, Peppermint crisps are best in a Peppermint Crisp tart.

The reason its not as sweet as you were expecting is because they put alot less sugar in they're sweets than we do (US, UK and Aus). Theyre pallets aren't accustomed to that much sugar.
Is it true flakes don't melt?
Oh my I am loving all the South African treats I lived in south Africa for many years they are nice when you get used to eating them
Oh and it's mini biscuits because it's like a snack pack, we actually have the big ones in store. Sometime, not everyone, but some people, put some good margerine like Stork or Flora inbetween 2 Marie biscuits and then dunk it in milk coffee, but you need to be quick, it dissolves quickly and can fall into your coffee. 😅
Can't believe you guys haven't heard of the mint cracknel. Sadly was discontinued years ago but my favourite at the time in U.K.
cheering u on from Port Elizabeth south africa. lekker man lekker
I'm also from PE, but living in Dubai. I think something went wrong with the items in this box, because those snacks are usually tops. Unless quality's gone down since I last had some. Is the Cadbury factory still going in PE?
Something has definitely went wrong, everything looked quite old. Oud en droog
The fact that Bakers in the UK are a company that makes dog food, the shortbread looking and tasting like dog biscuits seems quite appropriate.
Don't know if youtube generate them or you add them in but the subtitles were adding in a lot more lines/words then what was actually said. Usually they shorten/change words but there were quite a few lines as if they were programmed with a script and displayed them despite you not actually saying the line/words etc
Barry does put extra comments in the subtitles, usually in brackets I think. Sometimes jokes too. Maybe it was that
It's good to see Ashens here, at least. It seems he has abandoned his actual channel now. Last video uploaded nearly 5 months ago.
He's not. He's been busy on his horror film. I would 99% guarantee he will be back for a Halloween poundland special.
Why is Ashens dressed as the "How do you do, fellow kids" meme? Looks like he's been standing in the playground looking sus.
South African here 👋🏽 from Cape Town... I'm looking forward to watching this video 😁😀
They still have Marie biscuits here in Ireland ( normal sized!) We used to have a mint cracknell bar back in the 80s 90s I loved them!
So many yummy looking treats
Mint Cracknal was a bar sold in the UK in the 80's. I loved it,,
I heard that if you go without sugar for a long time then when you do get some it tastes alot sweeter.
Africa consumes alot less sugar than the UK as a daily average.
So maybe this is why they can get away with "dulling" the flavours.
Same as the USA dont like alot of our foods. On adverage they more than double our intake.
My favorite duo is back. Happy day 😊
just love your colab with ash :) more plz
Nice to see you with ashens yet again mate
So is all chocolate from SA chalky? Is it so it dosent melt as easy?
its probably gotten hot and cooled down in shipping. but if its like that already then you're probably right
This makes me want to send you some dutch sweets as well!
Also, the way your pronounced: Lekker
Was incredible!!! ❤
That's shrinkflation gone mad, those snacks used to be 4 times bigger 25 years ago
I'm Austrailan - We crush Peppermint Crisps and use them as a topping on Pavs!
Mint craknel you used to be able to get in uk when I was younger. But haven’t seen it for ages.. it was a 80s thing
