Male singers today are talented too, they just don't USE that talent to its fullest extent (or even close) the way guys like Frank Sinatra and Steve Lawrence did! 😉
@@paulk9985 I may only be one person, but I’m 33 with a two year old daughter and a four month old son, and trust me, when they get a little older, I plan on introducing the likes of Steve Lawrence, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, etc. to them so they’ll understand what true talent looks and sounds like. If it’s up to me, the truly great musicians will not be lost via the passage of time, music like this is timeless in my opinion.
@@johnselwitz5362 Don't forget Engelbert Humperdinck, Andy Williams, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, Matt Munro, Connie Francis, Patti Page, Petula Clark, and Karen Carpenter... to name just a few additional greats. I hope they learn to appreciate these folks. Your children will learn what quality is when they still hear these greats while today's "nobodies" fade away... quickly.
As successful as he was, I still don't feel like Lawrence got as much credit as he deserved. An amazing talent who took excellent care of his instrument throughout his entire career. RIP
I always felt Steve's delivery and sound was so much more personable than Frank's. He sometimes seemed, to me, like Judy Garland was when she performed...almost as if a freak of nature - a song - is escaping from their body, and they're at its mercy!
I've heard the song "I've Gotta Be Me" about as much as I've heard any song. This is one of Sammy Davis's signature songs but I've always felt that Steve sang it better and with more power. I just heard yesterday that Steve left us, and I started listening to his songs, and I cried because we've lost so many from yesteryear. When I was a kid, we'd see him on The Carol Burnett Show and Eydie Gorme, and he did comedy brilliantly. RIP Steve! ❤
This song comes from the Broadway show “Golden Rainbow” which starred Steve (and Eydie), so Steve sang it first. In fact, he recorded it on a 45 before the show opened, doing it somewhat differently from how he did it in the show. But he apparently suggested to his friend Sammy Davis, Jr. that the song would have a lot of meaning for him, and it was a bigger hit for Sammy than for Steve.
There's a medley of songs done live by Steve and Sammy (at the Oscars?) here on RUclips. When this song comes up, there's a comically forced bit of rivalry between the two. Brilliant!
I think the greatest part of the The Ed Sullivan Show was his absolute variety of musical talents...where else could you see Steve Lawrence, The Beatles, The Mommas and the Papas, etc on the same stage...mind you at different years of course.
This song speaks for me as a statement. To me this is the Best version as song by one of my best performers. Charming handsome man on stage with a big smile meant a lot to my spirit and attitude in life. Attended his shows on stage specially at Harrah's several times with pleasure. He left a long lasting impression with this and all other songs and TV comedy appearances of reminding the 'joy of living'. Wishing better health to my dear friend Steve. I will keep listening to these songs as long as I live.
He has a GOLDEN VOICE, a Versatile entertainer who carries almost all the qualifications of the greatest entertainer. All his music I can say a piece of music to the ear. I love him dearly
I was around 7 or 8 when I saw him on the Ed Sullivan Show and I fell instantly in love! I was never the typical girl - the Beatles did nothing for me - lol! I always gravitated to this music and Steve Lawrence was like the ultimate Prince Charming in my young mind! Such an enormous talent!! RIP...
I think my nephew Lolo looks like him. He's a very good-looking dude. I remember him and his wife, but I was very young and they were seemingly old already. Rest in peace, ol' boy! 🎉

Same Too... Mejor no pude haberlo dicho yo, de verdad quedo perfecta en 'Nobody'.
Sinatra Style :)
RIP Mr. Lawrence. You will be missed. ❤
RIP, one of the great singers of the 1960's and beyond.
The talent pool of male singers during the late 50's and 60's was simply incredible. Mr. Lawrence was amongst that group.
Male singers today are talented too, they just don't USE that talent to its fullest extent (or even close) the way guys like Frank Sinatra and Steve Lawrence did! 😉

He was “nobody”
Steve was at the apex of vocal talent in an era of giants.
Of all the versions of this song, Steve’s version is my favourite.
Me too! His wife Eydie Gorme (RIP) also was a great singer.
Sem dúvida nenhuma . Anos Dourados
Steve's version is the best
Mine too!
He introduced the song in the Musical "Golden Rainbow". @@ayosilva
What a terrific performance, flawless voice, and a fabulous interpretation of this classic song.
lawrence originally performed the song for a broadway show, with sammy davis jr covering it the same year the musical premiered

Sleep well with your wife. 10 years is a long time to go when you been married for 55 years 🕊💐🕊
Steve Lawrence was an excellent singer. The song he performed that I enjoyed the most was "The Drifter" from 1969.
Now Im listening to it! What a catchy chorus! Those trumpets are so refreshing! Thanks you
This song gives me hope not to give up. Thank you so much.
An amazing singer!
His wife, Eydie Gorme, was also an amazing singer too! Im completely a fan of Eydie! So versatile both of them, true artists!
Both great friends of Frank Sinatra. Toured together towards the end of his life.
I can’t be right for somebody else if I’m not right for me…. So true
