    What do you think of the new bridge? How will you be using it? Any thoughts about the 2 line opening?

    The waves and curves in the bike lane (besides being fun and pretty) are a "traffic calming" measure. They reduce the top safe speed to around 28mph, slow enough to stop before hitting someone.

      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад +3

      Makes sense! Haha I didn't want to say for certain because it seemed the whole aethestic of the bridge (even the pedestrian side) was very curvy!

      @ThrashingCode 2 месяца назад +1

      28 mph is kind of an insane speed to be hauling ass across this bridge, surprised that this is what it's rated at. But whatever the case, cheers to the bridge being open!

      Always found it kinda annoying how often bike infrastructure gets so much put in place to keep bikes slow when car lanes with less separation have almost nothing. Like the new squiggly bike path on the waterfront, or even this path when it has to cross the road

      The wavy bike lanes and planters make this infrastructure more enjoyable as a journey, not just a connection to get to your destination. The designers did a great job and a part of the commute for any biker, rollerblader, roller skater, scooterer, skateboarder, segwayer, onewheeler, runner, jogger, or walker look forward to on their journey to their destination. Love it!
      Apart from traffic calming, the wavy pattern breaks up the monotony of an otherwise lengthy bridge crossing, if you’ve ever walked across the Golden Gate Bridge, you know how long it feels crossing a straight bridge.

      @@IceArdorI've never walked across Golden Gate, but I did walk across the Tacoma Narrows bridge, which is pretty long. (And then walked back across soon after cause there's not much to walk to on its west side.)

    As someone who has only 1 protected bike lane in my entire city, this level of bike infra is truly unbelievable. As is that whole campus.

      Yeah, some of these tech campuses on the west coast are quite unreal. Though I am glad to be here where I have constant videos to make and share about bike infrastructure :)

    The design of the bridge is a little “out there” but I like it. I think watching the rain pour through those funnel shapes in the canopy cover will be cool.

      Haha, yeah I wonder how well the cover will do during a downpour :P interesting test.

    Redmond is vastly improved! Another super video.A Brompton is a great choice for riding on this infrastructure. (BTW, the bridge was funded by everyone who pays for a Microsoft subscription!!!)

      Haha yes, with the 2 Line opening maybe I'll go explore Redmond more sometime. The apparent Bicycle capital of the NW.

    That apex bump won't be even noticeable on my Load 75, however on every single other bike I ride... OOF that's gonna be a hit.
    Love that this bridge is finally open!!!!

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад

      Let me tell you, it was definitely noticeable on my Brompton XD If someone going too fast or wasn't prepared for it all... could be a bad time.
      Hope you're out there riding!

    The bumps are likely expansion joints. The bridge will expand and contract as it heats up from the sun. Expansion joints are necessary to prevent the concrete from cracking (and the metal underneath from buckling). The bumps are basically just covers over the gap where the joint is located; though, I do wonder if they could have been implemented better to reduce the bumpiness as you ride over them.

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah, that was my initial thinking too but I was curious why they were also present on that ramp on the west of the bridge.. especially at that heavy curve. But net effect of the curvey path + bumps is definitely some traffic calming which isn't a bad idea for such a bridge.

    5:39 The structure in the middle of the screen is... an elevator and staircase down to the underground parking lot. I also thought it was going to be something exciting, although as far as parking garages go, it's the prettiest entrance to one I've ever seen.

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад +1

      Thanks for that 😅 a bit of a let down... If only we had those Dutch style bike parking lots haha

    As the comments below already suggest, the wavy trail design are-apart from being playful-mostly created to bring the speeds down.

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah that's what I thought but looking real closely it's interesting it's not curvey for the whole thing? And no explicit signs anywhere about speed which I would have expected. Though at least a nice "slow" paint before the curve.

    I'm not sure the curves are mostly a bike calming measure, because it's even more curvy on the walking side. Also, I read that the architects, because it's a long bridge , put a lot of thought into not wanting it to look and feel like a tunnel. So, when you see curves, tilted canopies, etc., I think that's part of the reason why they are designed like that.

    Sweet I was thinking i would have to stop at the overlake station for the best connection to 520 trail to continue towards Redmond

      Yeah, I think this will definitely unlock more and more options for people to start their bike rides or connect! Super cool :) maybe I'll need to do some more Redmond rides.

    Great video. I’m guessing this Saturday will be a little crowded on the Link trains to bring bikes on board, but I plan to ride over to the South Bellevue station from Seattle to ride the train on day one. Do you know if there are many bike racks at SB?

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад +1

      There are bike lockers and bike racks for sure. One of the biggest bike link rooms from I recall

  • @MsFinkxz

    Seems a little sketchy that the ramp from the bridge to link becomes stairs when you get to the mezzanine.

    • @BestSideCycling

      Yeah good point but i'm sure they'll put up additional signage as needed.

  • @EastsideTransit
    @EastsideTransit 2 месяца назад +2

    Question for everyone. In the greater Seattle region, where else would a giant ped/bike bridge like this make the most sense? Is it at another Link station? Someplace else?

    • @BestSideCycling
      @BestSideCycling  2 месяца назад

      To this scale, I'm not sure! Honestly there are a decent number of "bridges"/overpasses in the works. Notably in South Bellevue is the Wilburton Trestle and the 405 Crossing that you can actually see! If i could wave a magic wand and get an amazing crossing somewhere.... it'd probably be something to replace the Fremont Bridge. It's one of the most cycled corridors in the city and it's not the best experience right now.

    "Best Side" my ass.... The east side of Washington has several hundred miles of, mostly, car free roads... No special bridges needed...
