Casey, this is exactly why I got out of the traffic division. Although it's rewarding to take DUI subjects off the street, I can still do that as a patrol officer and not have the headache of some jackass Sergeant asking me why I only had two tickets for the day. I couldn't write BS tickets. Two years was enough for me. I personally think we (police) have much bigger fish to fry than a bicycle ticket.
Except when a cyclist (or skateboard rider or car driver) jumps a red light, causing someone to swerve and hit an innocent bystander. Not specific to the example in this video but it's entirely possible along with many other chain of events. Surely as an officer you can see how a small infraction can cause serious consequences potentially killing someone. It's only a minor offence right so who cares? Well tell that to the families who's loved ones have been killed by a driver not paying attention for what is a BS ticket by your standards. Still got bigger fish to fry? Same applies to using a mobile phone while driving.
Some offences are created to generate income for a city, police are rewarded for tickets brought in, not for doing right by the public that day. I can give you an example from where I live in Germany at the moment, I do street performing and they recently banned amplifiers, now people will get tickets for using an amp for a singer yet there is no punishment for the drummers down the street playing nearly twice the volume. What it does do it provide the police an extra way to increase revenue and profit from it but what it isn't is "fair" I know some officers like the guy commenting here who let me off, he is a fair cop but sadly he is one of the very few.
Part of me thinks that the police officer made up the thing about a "little kid being hit" in that exact spot because he seemed really eager to come out on top of that argument
I wish the US treated other forms of transportation seriously. Especially now with these inflated car prices. A used car in my state is about $4-5000 more than it used to be last year. In the Netherlands your government treats cars as secondarily to bikes I understand 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻.
New york city cyclist signs are very very very very unclear. I hired the citibike and rode around the city for a couple of days. I was going the wrong way half of the time without knowing
Uhhhh.... if your goin against traffic, your obviously goin the wrong way.... riding a bike is not rocket science.... but it seems like these NYC Riders need engineering degrees to ride them cuz they don't know what the hell they're doing most of the time.....
yeah lol, I thought the exact same thing. After the clip at the end played i was like "hmm, well i don't think that was too polite". I mean the cop definitely wasn't being out right rude, like i understand were he was coming from. But at the same time he had a lot of anger and frustration in his voice, and it was very clear Casey was just trying to speak to the guy nicely and explain his side. The cop honestly didn't even sound like he was really listening to what Casey had to say.
We saw a very short snippet of the conversation and I think it’s entirely possible Casey could have been upset at first which made the cop upset. It’s hard to say for sure, but Casey does have control or which part to show.
Well, the cop did seem upset but it's pointless to make suggestions to him or argue with him as he has no control over how the intersection is set up, he is only tasked with enforcing the laws. Kind of like arguing with the clerk at a store about their prices. Neither can do anything about your complaint.
He isn't there to dispute about the rails. Hos job is to enforce rules. Not fix issues with bike paths. Go to the city council meeting etc if you want something like that fixed. He doesn't care why you broke the law. He just knows you did.
Cop on a horse says to little girl on a bike, “Did Santa get you that?” “Yes” replied the little girl. “Well tell him to put a reflector on it next year!” And fines her $5. The little girl looks up at the cop and says, “Nice horse you got there, did Santa bring you that?” The cop chuckles and replies, “He sure did!” “Well” says the little girl, Next year tell Santa that the dick goes under the horse, not on top of it”.
The New Travel Except he's wrong on this one and just coming across as a self entitled whiner. He got a ticket trying to go the wrong way down a one-way cycle lane which he carefully ignores, instead saying everyone else is doing it. The first Bike Lanes vid was spot on, this one is bullshit.
"The Laws aren't as clear as a red and green light". LOL what more do you need then 2 signs, the size of stop signs that say "WRONG WAY" in big bold letters. I agree, nothing worse then cyclists or drivers that think the law doesn't matter because they don't think it's a good law. Other than complaining about it on youtube, what's he done about it?
"The cop was a complete gentleman by the way" *the cop literally scolds them for minutes without letting them get a single word in* you're a nice man than most, Casey.
@@brucenadeau2172 Even if you follow the law, they still might give you a ticket anyways. Or they might shoot you. I've had cops in the family, they're abusive monsters.
As someone who almost got run over today because of the lack of bike lanes and crazy drivers who think they can cut me off on a really badly made intersection. I completely agree with this. And this wasn't in NYC, this was in a suburban neighborhood not far from the city.
i mean the uniformeds don’t have anything to do with this. if they sent two guys to break that wall, move that bench and the flower pots it would cost a lot less than having a patrol unit posted there as many times as they do. but they probably leave it there so they can continue to ticket citizens and leave that narrow opening there, endangering both cyclists and pedestrians.
MightyDantheman MC: He doesn't have to let people explain themselves. Explaining and judging is done in the court room. The LEO's job is enforcing the law, the only explaining they need to hear is whether or not a law exists and/or applies.
good thing he was cleaning up the streets by stopping these vicious criminals committing real and dangerous crimes. They should just drive cars instead of riding their bikes. How irresponsible of them. Could stop actual criminals, nah i'll just harass some cyclists.
Not only do they need to make a second lane but they need to get rid of those barricades as well. As a cyclist, every little bit of obstacle on the road can is like trying to dodge a flying brick when going at high speeds. NYC is a scary place to ride a bike and I 100% agree with you that the city needs to start consider improving its infrastructure instead of going after cyclists. 🚴
and pedestrian safety. its so selfish for Casey to look at this one point and think the right thing is for him to have priority riding at speed while wearing headphones.
Kudos Casey... you handled this in a super professional and reasonable manner. A lot of people would have just verbally assaulted the cop, who probably gets screamed at all day for following the directives the city imposes on him. He can’t change the situation, but maybe enough people will see this video to help spark a change at the city planning level.
R Kaplan I mean, addressing the issue of poor traffic egress isnt a very difficult task. All the while, he did pull another 2mil(give or take) views from many people who will never be affected by NYC cycling routes, so of course he dealt with it in a calm and collected manner.
I think a bike Lanes remake would be a great idea. Because it could show and reflect on how or if bike Lanes have changed since his first bike Lanes video
No need. This case the cyclist are in fault. They Go in the wrong direction. Imagine if cars just started to drive in the wrong way because they didn't feel like going around a block.
Casey kept saying that the NYPD he talked to was really nice, but when I watched the clip at end of the video he sounded really spicy and talked with a lot of attitude.
That's because you can not have a normal conversation with a NYC police officer. Immediately he felt threatened and was fumbling over his words due to agitation. I wouldn't attempt even eye contact with a cop. Casey seemed cool and calm and the cop was having like an argument with some ghost in his mind.
standards for nice are real low here. the cop was trying to justify his actions, he knew he was in the wrong and felt threatened so started getting edgy.
Those arrows on road do not actually point the direction of traffic. They are called sharks' teeth. If they point towards you, you have to yield! They are very common in Europe, especially in the Netherlands where it makes cycling super safe!
Hotrats76 actually they’re fairly common around here however, many americans don’t know the true meaning behind it bc it really isn’t taught during drivers ed
Max Levy Well that's very dumb in my opinion. Yielding is a big part of driving. Hope they'll realise this and start teaching this. In Sweden where I live, yielding is very strict rule, and it should be.
A yield would still allow the traffic to go that direction, just so long as they make sure no one else is coming the other direction. According to the city, though, no cyclists are allowed to go that direction, so they are still contradicting the sign.
yeah but just dont pay the ticket. tell stupid cop you dont have id and give him bogus information. cops are dumb. notice how the officer had no intuition skills. he has been compromised.
It would make me happy to see this issue fixed as a result of this video. There are things like this everywhere and it often feels like there's little that we can do
@@Robbythegod we really don't have shootings that often, the US is really, really big and individual states are more comparable to multiple European countries the the whole US to just 1 European country. Most crime statistics for US gun-related crime include ALL gun related homicides, including gang violence and suicide with a handgun. They're not really that accurate. There are cities to steer clear of, like Chicago, because they really do see an insane amount of crime (coming from someone who's from that area), but really it's not as bad as media makes it out to be. Also, this cop could only be described as polite in NYC, nobody I know would consider that polite. I've never met a cop that rude but I've never been to NYC so it might just be they're that rude there.
Ehhhh he did sound a little irritated but it's also New York City, most of the people who live there sound irritated lolol I do like how it went from a guy quickly to a little kid that got hit though lol.
Tem Production Mate, you obviously don't live in NYC....Casey said it would take 4 hours of video to get a point across. Hopefully one of NYPD friends can help a bro out.
did you know running a red light on a bike in nyc is more than 3x the the fine amount compared to if you run a red light in a car? laws dont make sense. Dont abide by them. as he said in the video. Use intuition its one of the greatest skills humans have.
Pickle Rick Yeah it is, a hell of a lot safer than driving into traffic and flying through red lights like the cop said... A single incident of people not seeing each other doesn't make it not safe
Both of those scenarios you just said are the cyclist's decision. They could follow the law, like they're supposed to, and not have any problems. There's nothing that says the cyclists have to run red lights or cross the street when they don't have the right of way.
Just checked the lastest Google street view, this issue is fixed. The direction of this lane is changed while the inbound way has been moved to the left side on the yellow buffer zone beyond the wall, with barriers protected. Good work of NYCDOT!
yup, the arrow is kinda misleading and the wrong way sign just doesn't make sense. Cyclist not obeying the traffic rules must suffer their actions. And why is there a block of concrete in the middle of the road blocking everything?
The "arrows" mean something else in the netherlands. They're called haaientanden (shark teeth) and they mean that you should stop for people coming from your left or right. Because there was a walkway right in front of the arrows I'm guessing they mean the same thing
Yes. There are times were it’s best to walk the bike. A good tip is to get in the habit of walking the bike with the chain side facing you. It might save you from being sued for ruining a passerby’s suit or dress. Sorry you had to go through that. You did handle the situation perfectly. The local congressman or city councilman would be the best person to go to for fixing that traffic hazard.
Hard hat. I did that and got a shovel and made a dirt ramp off the bike path so you could just ride under the bridge instead of having to go over and cross through traffic.
Casey, counterintuitive equals massive money grabs for municipalities. It’s not an accident. Might ask him what date of the week you got your ticket? The cynic in me suspects it might’ve been towards the end of the month, where quotas for ticket issuance might have had to have been met.
TheElusiveSalesman They don’t refer to them as “quotas”. But it is a known fact the cities/municipalities rely on ticket revenue as part of their budget. It becomes an “expectation” (synonym for quota LOL) to issue a certain number in order to generate a certain budgeted revenue. It’s terrible. It’s just another form of taxation.
Viva Frei is very right, my step father was a retired cop and would talk about them all the time, as well as someone I used to work with a previous job who was a cop before joining the military that he was expected to give tickets and if you don't give any tickets to anyone you have to provide a valid reason as to why you didn't ticket anyone that day or that anyone that you stopped why they didn't deserve a ticket or if you stopped anyone at all.
@Ace because people drive like idiots and often drunk during the holidays... Everyone is rushing to get places... So yes, it makes sense for cops to increase enforcement at times of increased crime.
Ouff, it’s very similar in Frankfurt - the flow during cycling is broken way too often, no dedicated traffic lights for cyclists and stuff. You see the sheer amount of cyclists with racing bikes? That’s the audience who really wants it. But if you really want to drive large scale adoption of cycling, you need infrastructure like here in The Netherlands. Here it is safe to bike for everyone, thus you see everyone on the street on their transport bikes, bikes with children in the front, grandmas with ebikes etc. Of course it may be a higher investment to make but if you after all win more users for the system, that’s a win. And I guess, the US health system would benefit from it.
Hey Casey, im from the Netherlands where as you know many people ride bikes. The problem with this intersection is that you have way to much speed coming down the bridge. With that you could hurt people on the zebra path. In holland they often resolve this problem with a simple zig zag in front of the zebra path. I hope this was helpful. Keep up the good work 😊😊
One easy way to finish the tickets revenue is to contest everyone of them, every single ticket so that the court room is completely full for the next 3-5 years..
i do this until the ticket no longer exists. its funny how the system works. its ultimately a waste of time. they will act as if there are no records and just find some poor sap who doesnt have the time or will power to fight the oppressors and ticket them. yin and yang. the more you realize the more it becomes one.
The arrows at the pavement are yield triangles to let pedestrians through but yes, going from the bridge direction on a bike at cruising speed they look like freakin' THIS WAY arrows - super confusing and misleading use of official signage.
Michał Rytter We're taught that yeild is yellow triangles, those look entirely like arrows, and the argument can be made that that's all you see, especially since you're more likely to be looking at the people around you appossed to the floor.
Leviathan's Iris Yes, vertical yield signs. But horizontal ones are pretty much always painted on the road with white paint. It is just that this particular traffic organization setup is confusing on this specific spot and I agree with Casey on that.
Michał Rytter Gotcha. Confusing it is indeed especially since the likelihood of you looking at the ground instead of pedesrians is unlikely to begin with
Those shark teeth yield marks are used literally all over the planet in every country including the US. It's not "misleading" at all. It's used exactly the way it should be. Anyone who knows a damn thing about traffic signage and markings would know this.
Patrick94GSR just read the whole conversation again, would you? I didn't say that we don't know what they mean. Yes, they are used in every darn country. I say this particular usage of them is confusing for a cyclist who goes at a cruising speed FROM THE BRIDGE direction and has to look for foot traffic over anything else and has the yield signs upside down to him or her looking like THIS WAY arrows. You do not have any other yield signs on the bridge side of pedestrian crossing, just random curved fence that doesn't really help... That is what is confusing.
I'm sure you are a recognized person all around NYC, Casey. Cops are trained to recognize people. You have to deal with NYPD cops. Let me say, this cop DID NOT sound like a "nice guy" He sounded confrontational, aggravated and agitated He was clearly NOT de-escalating the encounter He brought up an injured pedestrian (unfounded) He brought up his animosity toward cyclists He accused YOU - by proxy - of disobeying traffic signals He challenged you at one point to show him a sign somewhere He seemed to be baiting YOU into a more strenuous confrontation You didn't take the bait I am dubious of cops intentions whenever I am forced to interact with them for these reasons above
Eveyone - who wants to - should get the opportunity to spend a day doing a cop's job (enforcing the law). Its a no win situation because most of your encounters will be with people who are breaking the law and want to give you their reason for doing so, when instead they should be directing that information at the ones who have the power to relieve them of their obligation to follow the law, that is the Courts. Its a job I wouldn't take on because its destined to frustrate one tremendously, just imagine having to listen to complaints about you doing your job all day long.
Thomas Rawlins, yes just like how all the french will surrender the moment they are threatened, and all germans are nazi's, and all russians are communists.
ODB He's got several people around him yelling at him for enforcing a law he didn't write. A lot of police return the attitude they receive. He's not responsible for the law. If you don't like it then argue with the people who wrote it, not the guy expected to enforce it.
He's human, trying to deal with (I'm sure he realizes) for the most part a poorly designed bike/pedestrian intersection. He drew the short straw this particular day and has my sympathy
The cop at the end was very aggressive. Sorry you had to deal with that! Edit: NYC is my second home. I’m well aware of the talking patterns. That’s not what I meant by aggressive. I just meant that he wouldn’t let him talk. I understand why he would be like that though. He was dealing with a group of excitable people. I’m not saying it was bad. I’m just saying it makes for an uncomfortable situation that I wouldn’t want to find myself in. 😅
I have had two experiences with police officers while cycling. Both times they told me they should’ve ticketed me, but didn’t want to. And told me what I was doing wrong and why it was illegal. I think that this is very smart. Its just as effective to prevent traffic accidents, but it gives people trust in police officers and the fact that they’re there to make the place better and safer.
Yeah, they had to put a giant out there to deal with angry New Yorkers. Hell of a difficult job. Poor guy, imagine having to engage in conversation with upset people wearing helmets all day long.
Good for Casey. Most rich dude would just brush off a little fine. I once got a ticket for a California stop at a stop sign and I was fined 250. Pretty much took all my food money for 2 weeks
David when did I ever say that? I just said rolling through a stop sign doesn't warrant a $250 fine. You're telling me if you're at a backroads intersection with nobody around, you MUST come to a clear and concise stop to protect yourself from...trees?
I get this a lot when I'm riding on a bike only path and pedestrians are always walking on it, nothing is ever done and it's deemed acceptable, but if I were to ride on the footpath, I'd be a criminal.
Nuno Soares tough shit. You walk into traffic and get hit doesn't get you a free pass. So the biker gets fined and has a messed up bike because two wrongs make it right?
I've gotta say, as a cyclist and a driver, it is clearly labeled. When you're on the road, no matter in what vehicle, it's your responsibility to recognize road signs. A couple stickers and some sharpie isn't an excuse to drive the wrong way down a one way street, and it's not an excuse here. However I also agree it's a terrible bike lane design and needs to be changed.
It doesn't excuse the fact that there's no way forward without breaking the rules. It happened in the 2012 london olympics, where taxi lanes and bus lanes would merge, blocking cars from many routes of the city without much warning as you're driving. It's fertile ground for wrong turns and revenue for tickets
Totally agree Casey! So frustrating and you know nearly EVERYONE pays the fine. Because its NOT worth the frustration of going to court to plea your case. I just came back from Portland Oregon and other cities seem to do such a better job of handling bicycle traffic. It's certainly something that NY City could get up to speed with. Other cities seem to do such a better job at this.
I'm sure your right, but I'm also sure it's a lot more difficult to balance the vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian traffic in NYC than any city in Holland. Holland's biggest city is only 750k people where NYC is well over 8 million.
Andrew hmm it's not that hard if you spend money on it. 90% of the roads in the whole Netherlands have bicycle lanes next to it. Besides, the centres of Dutch cities are also really crowded. Bigger cities are just as crowded but then the crowded area is just bigger. Its just that we are used to bikes for a long time, so it has been implemented from the beginning. But giving less space to cars is an easy solution. People will just use fewer cars and more public transport and bikes
Yes, it is very hard to engineer streets that can successfully manage 8+ million people on a daily basis. Take a trip to new york and you will understand... Then again, maybe you wont. Casey obviously doesn't.
Andrew you know the Netherlands is one of the most dense populated countries in the world? So if we can do it with a country I think you guys would be able to do it with a city(but first be sure American driver licenses are harder to get cause when I visited the US everyone was driving horrible)
That officer sounded so aggressive towards you at the end. They moan about poluttion and carbon emissions etc. encourage more peopel to cycle...Then punish those who cycle because the city is too stupid to put a proper cycle lane in.
They spend so much money making it safe to drive. No money spent making it safe to cycle. And yet the moment a cyclist leaves the bike lane bc a car is parked in it, if he gets hit by a car? that cyclist is at fault. He could even be sued for damaging the car. Because hes not in the designated bike riding area. The car parked in the bike lane? Generally will not get a ticket or any penalization what so ever. Welcome to new york. If you dont have a car youre considered a poor idiot who doesnt matter.
No doubt better to encourage cycling or other means of transportation. NYC has gotten much better over the past several years. But, could be much better for sure!
It appears to be an engineered violation Cyclists coming from one direction are targeted for violation if they proceed in that direction. That is engineered. The path is arbitrarily blocked by a barrier. A sign arbitrarily makes one direction a violation for no obvious reason other than the path has been arbitrarily blocked in the first place. Somebody planned this as a violation Somebody designed this obstruction to create this violation The violation is arbitrary and serves no purpose other than to harass cyclists
Purpose is to redirect cyclists past the business either side. Can't have people cycle right through without buying anything or even looking at advertisements! Notice the stores at the start of the video...
As a bicyclist, I can understand. And I don't even live in New York City. However police are only just there to simply enforce the laws there. Not make them. It's the city department of parks/recreation and public works you need to address the problem to. Or just contact the NYC council.
Its not ,when your coming down there are 5 signs telling you where you can go and they all either point left and /or right none point straight furthermore if you make the mistake of going straight there is another sign telling you, you are going the wrong way. its really not that hard people ignore those signs all the time which is why its not a 2 way at the pedestrian crossing.
no, you stay on the bike lane and wait for the light to change then after traffic stops you can go back on the other bike lane all the way to the right its not that hard.
I love how the NYPD standard for "polite" is basically the same standard for "pretty damn rude" from any other police officer. I hate seeing tourists ask for directions from a cop and being aggressively told directions.
they have other things to worry about than directing tourists around a city they wanted to go to so want to get the interaction over with as quickly as possible (in some cases)
I think a lot of bicycle infrastructure is designed by people who aren't cyclists....
There are MANY examples of this on the NYC bike lanes.

It's funny to see officer401 comment on another of my favorite video makers. Long live Casey and officer401 👍👍
The cop sure didn’t sound like a gentleman
Thrive With Alex in nyc it’s considered gentleman. Lol yes I am aware how shitty that is
Thrive With Alex hello 👋 how can I find you on Facebook? I'm Russian and I need some foreigners for a practice of my English
Part of me thinks that the police officer made up the thing about a "little kid being hit" in that exact spot because he seemed really eager to come out on top of that argument
Sounds like your usual piece of shit cop who thinks he's above everyone
Well he probably has that tone because he's also explaining it to a bunch of angry cyclists who aren't being nice
Dude I'm from the Netherlands and I'm cringing so hard at this
You guys have the best bike roads.
Alpha Anderson dumb city for dumb people!!
To me it seems easy to follow signs? Even the sign in this video seems hard to miss, it's just inconvenient and annoying to abide by.
Jake Whatever: You made it clear that you didn't get on a bicycle in your life. Maybe on a stationary one in a gym. :D
Yeah! And think of all the taxation they force on its population without attending to the most trivial of problems.
Uhhhh.... if your goin against traffic, your obviously goin the wrong way.... riding a bike is not rocket science.... but it seems like these NYC Riders need engineering degrees to ride them cuz they don't know what the hell they're doing most of the time.....
“The police officer was such a gentleman”
The clip at the very end tells a different story...
yeah lol, I thought the exact same thing.
It’s hard to say for sure, but Casey does have control or which part to show.
that is a good point, we are only seeing part of the conversation, so i guess i can't say for sure
All you gotta do is turn your bike to the other way and do a reverse. Boom.
y would u reverse with a bicycle

Cop on a horse says to little girl on a bike, “Did Santa get you that?”
“Yes” replied the little girl.
“Well tell him to put a reflector on it next year!” And fines her $5.
The little girl looks up at the cop and says, “Nice horse you got there, did Santa bring you that?”
The cop chuckles and replies, “He sure did!”
“Well” says the little girl, Next year tell Santa that the dick goes under the horse, not on top of it”.
Ooooo nice one😂
🤣🤣🤣
Finish him!!!!

that was soooooooo funny
Bike Lanes v 2.0
The New Travel, I was going to write exactly the same but you beat me by two hours!
He should've ridden his bike into the wall to highlight the fact there is no gap there.
Daniel Epson 😂😂😂😂
From a city that was called new Amsterdam you would think they would know something about cycling ;)
Ok ton opkankeren
Jaa tochh jeeeeetje man

That was before cycling was a thing.
"The cop was a complete gentleman by the way"
*the cop literally scolds them for minutes without letting them get a single word in*
you're a nice man than most, Casey.
he said a was a gentleman, not a nice gentleman lol
that is what cops should do if you do not follow the law you get a ticket
@@brucenadeau2172 Even if you follow the law, they still might give you a ticket anyways.
Or they might shoot you.
I've had cops in the family, they're abusive monsters.
@@brucenadeau2172 Bruce Nadeau
As someone who almost got run over today because of the lack of bike lanes and crazy drivers who think they can cut me off on a really badly made intersection. I completely agree with this. And this wasn't in NYC, this was in a suburban neighborhood not far from the city.
I love when Casey plays the journalist role on RUclips, this is great.
I hate it because he isn't a journalist and journalists follow ethical standards that Casey does not follow.
he's like a natural born journalist this guy, i love how much he loves to report about stuff
Kaitlin Benz What standard? Lol! Journalistic integrity died a long time ago. You sound elitist af.
He is just trying to make a point lol
what ethical standards? have you ever heard of an op-doc?
Way to be mature about this Casey. Rather than just hating on the cops, you've looked at the real issue and offered a solution. Nice job.
Why not both?
Idk how he was so calm because they didn't listen to him last time
i mean the uniformeds don’t have anything to do with this. if they sent two guys to break that wall, move that bench and the flower pots it would cost a lot less than having a patrol unit posted there as many times as they do. but they probably leave it there so they can continue to ticket citizens and leave that narrow opening there, endangering both cyclists and pedestrians.
How fuckin' low is the bar you expect? Maybe that's the issue. Congratulating cassie for being an adult.... smdh.
Very clever putting the original ticketing footage at the end. It gives viewers a whole different picture of the situation just based on the tone.
John Basedow That's basically NY cops
yes got a very different image of caseys explanation of the situation and then of the end clip
Very true
MightyDantheman MC: He doesn't have to let people explain themselves. Explaining and judging is done in the court room. The LEO's job is enforcing the law, the only explaining they need to hear is whether or not a law exists and/or applies.
good thing he was cleaning up the streets by stopping these vicious criminals committing real and dangerous crimes. They should just drive cars instead of riding their bikes. How irresponsible of them.
Could stop actual criminals, nah i'll just harass some cyclists.
Just put a “yield for oncoming cyclists” sign down.
you kidding me? That would make too much sense, New York isn't known for that xD
Sr Snufflekins lmao
They wouldn't yield
or just make it a two way thing with another bike lane and exit
@@punnequraq exactly. That would cost a bit more than a $20 sign though.
Loved the aerial footage of the bike lane though. It looked cool from above haha
Romina i was thinking the same thing!
But is Casey gonna get in trouble with the FCC (again) because of that drone shot? Lol :"))
Ferdinand Zebua I thought about that actually. 😅😂
Ferdinand Zebua FAA*
Everyone is assuming he used a drone, but have you ever seen a camera on a boom pole? Looks just like a drone shot. Don't assume.
That's such a trap. It's almost like it WAS a two lane cycle path, and then they got rid of it to generate revenue.
Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.
When you have over 2,000 cyclists on a daily basis going through there it does sound like they want to generate easy money with tickets sadly..
Then the cops wonder why we can hate them
That’s exactly what they did...
Lashan i
Not only do they need to make a second lane but they need to get rid of those barricades as well. As a cyclist, every little bit of obstacle on the road can is like trying to dodge a flying brick when going at high speeds. NYC is a scary place to ride a bike and I 100% agree with you that the city needs to start consider improving its infrastructure instead of going after cyclists. 🚴
Well that's the point of the obstacle: going more slowly. High speed is dangerous!
the barricade is actually for the cyclist safety. it makes so a vehicle cant go down it and run over everyone. 2. its supposed to make you slow down.
and pedestrian safety. its so selfish for Casey to look at this one point and think the right thing is for him to have priority riding at speed while wearing headphones.
Randall Dietel that’s not the problem, the problem is having traffic legally only going one way when it should be going both ways.
lmao This is only my second video, but I love watching you argue against the nonsensical laws we have.
R Kaplan Casey Neistat vs the state of New York
Stop using super.
R Kaplan I mean, addressing the issue of poor traffic egress isnt a very difficult task. All the while, he did pull another 2mil(give or take) views from many people who will never be affected by NYC cycling routes, so of course he dealt with it in a calm and collected manner.
Seems the cop verbally assualted Casey. Guess you didn’t watch the ending. He wasn’t friendly whats so ever
Good thing Casey isn’t black. This would have been a very different video otherwise.
You should do a remake of the "Bike lanes" video! :)
I think a bike Lanes remake would be a great idea. Because it could show and reflect on how or if bike Lanes have changed since his first bike Lanes video
That was what I thought this was before I actually watched it.
Tw3akst3r's Reviews me too
No need. This case the cyclist are in fault. They Go in the wrong direction. Imagine if cars just started to drive in the wrong way because they didn't feel like going around a block.
I doubt Casey can withstand crashing so much at this age again!

Casey kept saying that the NYPD he talked to was really nice, but when I watched the clip at end of the video he sounded really spicy and talked with a lot of attitude.
Exactly what I thought.
Monique Cash like most pigs in NYC
Right? Sounds like a douche tbh
Even America isn't as sophisticated as Europe.
Hotrats76 actually they’re fairly common around here however, many americans don’t know the true meaning behind it bc it really isn’t taught during drivers ed
Stop using super to explain things.
Lol Casey still the biggest advocate for them bikers in NYC.

@@placesaroundus Can confirm, tested at the top of the list - didn't even get an interview with my local PD.
Yeah, it shocks me that that's how US police act. It really deters me from wanting to visit, that and the frequent shootings and alike

You guys at least have bike Lanes. You have to race against cars and motor bikes to ride where I live.
City: let's encourage other methods of transportation.
Also city: let's give out tickets for taking a safer route
Clearly safe when cyclists hit kids walking through the correct direction.
Pickle Rick All I'm saying is I would much rather go straight than go into traffic... And as you can see, so do a large majority of bikers
Sam that’s fine, I’m sure it’s easier and safer, but if it’s against the rules then don’t complain when you get caught. (Like Casey) 🤷🏻♂️
I still think common sense and being a city planner is not mutually exclusive.
Just checked the lastest Google street view, this issue is fixed. The direction of this lane is changed while the inbound way has been moved to the left side on the yellow buffer zone beyond the wall, with barriers protected. Good work of NYCDOT!
I understand everything except for..
*WHY ARE THERE ARROWS ON THE GROUND TELLING YOU TO GO INTO THAT DIRECTION!?!?!*
yup, the arrow is kinda misleading and the wrong way sign just doesn't make sense. Cyclist not obeying the traffic rules must suffer their actions. And why is there a block of concrete in the middle of the road blocking everything?
Entrapment!
The "arrows" mean something else in the netherlands. They're called haaientanden (shark teeth) and they mean that you should stop for people coming from your left or right. Because there was a walkway right in front of the arrows I'm guessing they mean the same thing
the arros mean the pedestrians have the priority
it's a bait

@Frank Godley ok
Frank Godley whoa whoa whoa!!! Clam down, you virgin boy!!!
Hard hat. I did that and got a shovel and made a dirt ramp off the bike path so you could just ride under the bridge instead of having to go over and cross through traffic.
The fact that bridge exit is in the middle of the road is a mayor design mistake. .

conkerlive101 haha surprising but I’ll take it! 😂🙏🏼

Taha Silat appreciate that! 🙏🏼
Ticket “quotas” are NOT a thing... lol
Exactly. Not only is this true, that counterintuitive equates to revenue generation, but also that it costs money to fix the problem.
Keep up the good work 😊😊
max mäkel I've never heard of anything like this and it sounds like a really good idea. Bike lanes are a joke in my city.
I hope I can bicycling in Netherlands. Someday.
The hell with cycling in the Netherlands...I wanna fuck a whore there, lol...
o hoi nederland is wel goeie
YOUR COUNTRY IS THE LEADER IN THIS DOMAIN
One easy way to finish the tickets revenue is to contest everyone of them, every single ticket so that the court room is completely full for the next 3-5 years..
Critical mass
i do this until the ticket no longer exists. its funny how the system works. its ultimately a waste of time. they will act as if there are no records and just find some poor sap who doesnt have the time or will power to fight the oppressors and ticket them. yin and yang. the more you realize the more it becomes one.
stupid idea when cops also get rid of people that do stupid shit too
goes for cyclists too
The arrows at the pavement are yield triangles to let pedestrians through but yes, going from the bridge direction on a bike at cruising speed they look like freakin' THIS WAY arrows - super confusing and misleading use of official signage.
Michał Rytter
We're taught that yeild is yellow triangles, those look entirely like arrows, and the argument can be made that that's all you see, especially since you're more likely to be looking at the people around you appossed to the floor.
Leviathan's Iris Yes, vertical yield signs. But horizontal ones are pretty much always painted on the road with white paint. It is just that this particular traffic organization setup is confusing on this specific spot and I agree with Casey on that.
Michał Rytter
Gotcha.
The crazy thing is Casey has such a massive following that the City of NY might actually see this.
Don't know if they saw it but this has actually been fixed, so maybe ;)
I'm sure you are a recognized person all around NYC, Casey. Cops are trained to recognize people. You have to deal with NYPD cops.
Let me say, this cop DID NOT sound like a "nice guy"
He sounded confrontational, aggravated and agitated
He was clearly NOT de-escalating the encounter
He brought up an injured pedestrian (unfounded)
He brought up his animosity toward cyclists
He accused YOU - by proxy - of disobeying traffic signals
He challenged you at one point to show him a sign somewhere
He seemed to be baiting YOU into a more strenuous confrontation
You didn't take the bait
I am dubious of cops intentions whenever I am forced to interact with them for these reasons above
One of the many reasons I think we'd be better off replacing human cops with robots in the future. They'd think more clearly.
I think you're judging an encounter that was 15+ minutes based on 20 seconds of footage.
I could be completely wrong but from what I can tell US cops are complete dicks who seem to search for confrontation.
Thomas Rawlins, yes just like how all the french will surrender the moment they are threatened, and all germans are nazi's, and all russians are communists.
That police officer doesn't sound respectful.
ODB He's got several people around him yelling at him for enforcing a law he didn't write. A lot of police return the attitude they receive. He's not responsible for the law. If you don't like it then argue with the people who wrote it, not the guy expected to enforce it.
It’s New York everyone’s a dick
He's human, trying to deal with (I'm sure he realizes) for the most part a poorly designed bike/pedestrian intersection. He drew the short straw this particular day and has my sympathy
ODB nope.. he's a piece of living shit ticketing people to pay for his salary
fasfan 🖕🏻🖕🏽🖕🏿
The cop at the end was very aggressive. Sorry you had to deal with that!
Edit: NYC is my second home. I’m well aware of the talking patterns. That’s not what I meant by aggressive. I just meant that he wouldn’t let him talk. I understand why he would be like that though. He was dealing with a group of excitable people. I’m not saying it was bad. I’m just saying it makes for an uncomfortable situation that I wouldn’t want to find myself in. 😅
Imagine when you do something actually bad, HA!
yeah i thought so too. so much for him being a gentleman like Casey said...perhaps the clip we heard wasn't representative of the whole convo :/
Romina not really he was just frustrated aggression wow of Been a lot worst
He wasn’t. That’s how New Yorkers speak.
Welcome to New York. That's polite.
Worlds largest cop. Surely?
he was enormous. like the mountain in game of thrones

Don't break the law?
how that breaking the law when on the ground there 3 arrow one way n a sign saying different omg.
David when did I ever say that? I just said rolling through a stop sign doesn't warrant a $250 fine. You're telling me if you're at a backroads intersection with nobody around, you MUST come to a clear and concise stop to protect yourself from...trees?
i feel bad for you, but stop at the stop signs for everyone’s safety please
啊啊啊 lol it was 5am in an empty lot but okay lol
So many years and your still backing up cycling I respect that
So a bicyclist got ticketed for biking on the bike path but the citizen that got hit didn’t get ticketed for walking on the bike path?
Good point. However I think the pedestrian went through enough trauma/excitement already.
Tyler Chamberlain probably.
Tyler Chamberlain I see it this way...Pedestrains win over everything and anything lol
in philippine, we call it CASH POINT. everywhere the same
DChong yup just in a different life.
It’s almost like he’s done a video like this before… NYPD listen up!
In Ireland 🇮🇪, you can't even get a ticket for anything
It says “Wrong Way” but has the bike lane painted on the road below it
That place really needs a redesign! Someone's gonna get hurt again if they don't improve that. Did you said 100$? Awesome suggestion Casey!
When it gets to bikes and Casey, shit gets real.
RGMG hello 👋 how can I find you on Facebook? I'm Russian and I need some foreigners for a practice of my English
FIX THE PROBLEM.
Bike lanes 2 anybody?
Why are your videos so good?
story telling
With Practice, comes perfection
Kyle Hanz Yep , Exactly ! And He Has a Passion For it.
Because he has the ability to see, story tell, and capture perspective...
OcRefrigeration,Hvac & Electrical. Most definitely good add 👍🏿
How hard is it to make another path going straight like Casey was suggesting? I don't even live in NYC and it infuriates me that they don't do that
You mention that the officer who gave you the ticket was professional? He is not quite!
There's a good chance the officer is being defensive because of the other angry cyclists he's explaining this to
Professional, in NY. People just yell at each other in NYC.
If this was the officer being a "gentleman" then I don't want to meet a rude officer. Is this normal in the US?
At least he didn't pull his gun out, I guess. :-/
That’s professional by Americans standards if he didn’t shoot or unnecessarily arrest someone
Bike Lanes #2??
Take a visit to Holland and see how we do it!!! So many bikes/lanes
Rijkiesbrand He already knows, its his fav. country to visit
To fix this problem just look the other way and reverse through the lane.
and
VOILA!
I bet the vast majority of cops in western cities only drive.
No doubt better to encourage cycling or other means of transportation. NYC has gotten much better over the past several years. But, could be much better for sure!
JJ's Life Dope from Park Slope riding around in those Big Suburbans......
JJ's Life The officer is correct and has to deal with it everyday. It is like a norm for cyclists to cross streets during red lights.
It appears to be an engineered violation
Cyclists coming from one direction are targeted for violation if they proceed in that direction. That is engineered. The path is arbitrarily blocked by a barrier. A sign arbitrarily makes one direction a violation for no obvious reason other than the path has been arbitrarily blocked in the first place.
Somebody planned this as a violation
Somebody designed this obstruction to create this violation
The violation is arbitrary and serves no purpose other than to harass cyclists
did u research this at all?
It's there to make the city money. Still a huge problem though.
Purpose is to redirect cyclists past the business either side. Can't have people cycle right through without buying anything or even looking at advertisements! Notice the stores at the start of the video...
Petty
Here's the funny part. That barrier is relatively new. It wasn't always there. People used to ride up and down it
I think that America needs to call with The Netherlands
👌

As a bicyclist, I can understand. And I don't even live in New York City. However police are only just there to simply enforce the laws there. Not make them. It's the city department of parks/recreation and public works you need to address the problem to. Or just contact the NYC council.
Angry casey is the best ! He just made me remember his bike-lane movie :3
I like how even your song choice in the end implies change, yet you're not "mad at them" haha
Vlog Creations haha I doubt a lot of people got that, very smart casey
Hey Ross! Hahaha
Hey, it's Charles Ross! 🤘
He's a nice thug.
Love it when Casey does stuff like this. It usually leads to positive change.
It has actually been fixet. Look at google maps street view 2019.
LOL the reversed it now you can't go the other direction :/
“I’m gonna make a video that makes me 10x what the ticket cost” ***

Definitely 100x at least..

The video cost him nothing but time. You meant earn.
Looks like a intentional money trap.
That's exactly what I was thinking.
Most of NYC is
I love how the NYPD standard for "polite" is basically the same standard for "pretty damn rude" from any other police officer.
I hate seeing tourists ask for directions from a cop and being aggressively told directions.
they have other things to worry about than directing tourists around a city they wanted to go to so want to get the interaction over with as quickly as possible (in some cases)
@@__-zo6qi uh huh, like this guy? Or the cops just standing on a street corner? They don’t have shit going on. “Serve and protect” they’re serving
Directions? Bro it's the 2st century ever heard of maps? 😂😂
@@__-zo6qi Yeah, like looking for problems where there aren't any
Vlogs like this were epic! Casey can't make content this great in Cali imho
