I have a 2014 Sorento and with the right tires, it dominates the snow, even though I only have Front wheel drive on mine. I have driven mine off road on grass, gravel and snow but yes, clearance is a problem and you need to be careful with rocks, stumps and other stuff. Great review.
Ditch those all seasons for a good set of winter tires, and lock in the rear dif and it would have made most of those hills easily.
and VSC off
With a Sorento, you have to turn off the auto slip control. You'll get up those hills just fine.
I have a 2015 sorento AWD with Michelin x ice 2 tires and i have never ever gotten stuck. I have drove threw very deep snow and very high hills covered in packed snow and ice. Handles like a dream. This video does not do the sorento justice.
Im thinking of buying a sorento have you ever had any problems with yours? You bought is new or used?
That does have a differential lock, you might try that...I think it was the driver, not the Sorento.
agreed 100%
Love these off-road reviews. Awesome job. One tip though...if you disable the traction control on every vehicle you test here, you wouldn't lose so much momentum going up the hills. :-)
Honestly im thinking of getting one of these for the family. But almost anything with an engine and good snow tires could perform these tasks
he did not put the 4wd lock on.
Thank you for the demo. I could see on the final climb that the rear wheel was not spinning at all and the fronts were spinning out. You saved me the trouble!!!
LOCK THE DIFF 6 years ago
haha
I'll have just one word : Winter Tires !!! Ok it's two words. And differential lock is a great asset when climbing on snow. Aside that, it's a great video.
Dave, did you locked the differential or was just on awd setting? I think locking the diffs would have worked even on all seasons tyres. It would be great to see a real off road video with the Santa Fe Sport! Keep up the good work!!
Well you have to take into an account on this Sorento's stock tires are for road driving, not snow/ off-road. Chains would have probably have performed better.
Wish we had this in Peru IN I'd love a test road track like this I love the snow
Good reviews ... I love those .... Like that SUV too
With a decent set of tires (read snow tires), you would've gone up every hills you attempted to climb ... We could see the tire-cam showing how the tires did not empty itself properly ... But, for asphalt ridin' ... That'll be ok.
Heck even some all-terrains would have been a huge help. Probably could have made it on most of those since he was really close on those all-seasons.
I'm rather impressed with the little Kia actually.
Many of the traction issues of the snow videos are related to the tires. It appears that the test cars come with all season or worse, summer tires which are not designed for the winter weather temperatures or the nature of the terrain which they cannot grip.
Just curious, do you disable the traction control when you do these off-road tests so that the computer isn't cutting power when you're trying to scramble up a hill?
I think if the car had winter/snow tires it would have done better. Also, traction control should have been turned off. It look like it was on causing the wheels to slow down (when they were slipping)
Hey Dave, Please do a off road, snow, AWD performance review of 2014 Toyota Highlander. I've been waiting for your review before I pull the plug on it...
The concept on Kia-Hyundai is same. You should set LOCK button to On and the control button (TCS) to Off.
Dave did yiu try locking differtial and turn on hill climb assist? That would have helped. Also the sx trim is lowered. You should tell manufacturer to provide you with the highest ground clearance versions if you are going to take the vehicle off road.
They are not lowered. They all have 7.3in of ground clearance across all trims.
I believe in good winter tires, especially where I live in Winnipeg (aka Winterpeg). A better AWD system would have helped here but tires would have got him up that hill no problem. Great video though!
No thumbs up or down because I don't know if you put the AWD selector in LOCK.
I know fore sure that the Dynamax drive train on the car is great and that the all season tires are useless in snow.
Hey Dave you should color correct, increase some highlights and add some more exposure to your video footage. It will help your image quality and viewing experience.
Yah I mentioned this before. He, like most non-professionals (and many professionals alike!) get foiled by snow because they just let the camera give them what they automatically do (aim for grey). Underexposure City!
hey dave, the situation is totally calling for the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee review. come on make it happen man.
Aria Hajiaghabozorgi I'd like to but odds are I'm only going to get 2015 models from this point forward. If and when I do get a Jeep GC, I will!
Thanks for considering anyways.
Did you actually lock it?
I am also in Spokane and it's now snowing here. I have a 2013 Kia Sorento and I am sliding in snow dust!!! It has NO traction at all what so ever and the tires are more then half good, or more. What am I doing wrong????
Looks like they don't know this is never going to work without winter tires...
You play whit fire Dave.i remember the Tiguan But i love those video.
Hi thank you for all the good reviews
Is any way you can review for us the 2014 outlander
on the ice
In the mountain that will be great
Thank you
khalid alj Kia mistake to stop production of the Mojave
Dave -- that had to be scary.
I honestly think the Sorento did pretty good
Do the 2014 cx5 awd I have the 2013 and want to see how it would handle in your Park there
Definitely can use it out here in Yakima.
Crappy AWD system, never once did I see it trying to find traction or shuffle the torque around, all it did was spin the tires.
The traction control was interfering too much, and it does slow you down. You can literally have your foot to the floor, and the engine will not rev high and spin the tires like crazy. Dave did good for what he's working with here. Regardless, $42,000 for a Kia? No thanks, I'd buy a CPO 2014 Acura MDX SH-AWD 3.7 Tech, 305 hp, excellent AWD system, superior reliability. Granted it's not brand new, but with (i.e) 20,000 or fewer miles, who cares. Everyone always blurts out that Hyundai/Kia has a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty, but first of all, read the fine print. Second, why such a long warranty, I look at that as not such a good thing. Acura CPO is 7 years/70,000 miles (correct me if I'm wrong Dave), but you will NEVER use it. Kia Sorrento has a horrible reliability track record. And for the comment about getting a Subaru, the new Outback 2.5i with a CVT can't offroad for the life of it. The CVT cannot transfer torque, it's made from rubber bands! Watch some videos on the CVT offroad. You can be in light sand on a very slight incline, floor the throttle and NO WHEELS WILL SPIN! Now that's embarrassing, at least the Kia was spinning wheels. Anyways, keep up the great work Dave. Please keep posting reviews! I subscribed.
tires are the problem, were you in 4 lock with tcs on or off?
If you want to drive in snow, put on snow tires! all-season or performance radials are crap in the snow.
thudtheace all of my test vehicles come with all-season... but that's a good tip for others. What is your daily vehicle?
Everyman Driver Car Reviews I drive the 2.2 diesel 2011 Kia sorento .It's true, I climbed every icy slopes near Dracula Castel Bran in Romanian's Carpathian country.Unfortunately the huge torque with might be aavailabledue to the 6spd.aut ghearbox - is limited on this situation - 4x4 lock and esp on or off.The only thing that comes in handy is this decent road clearance.
p.s Nokian WR Suv3 winter and all weather tires are a huge improvement comparing to the stock Nexen all season tires.
Next time try-it with real winter tires, it will make a whole difference!
Panoramic sunroof (or moonroof). Me gusta.
has done good job with all season tyres. but 2.2 diesel awd version is almost 76000 usd in our country ( turkey ) we cant bu it.. have high tax.. for example 30000 usd import price+ %130 tax =69000 usd +%18 tax again =76020 usd.. and we buy with euro not usd.. then price is so high than usd...brrrrrrrrrr
You’re actually off-roading with all season radials rather than all terrain tires. This is Not a true representation of what this vehicle could actually do equipped with the right tires for the terrain.
My bad, I meant 2013 CPO Acura MDX SH-AWD 3.7 Tech. 2014 is 3rd Gen.
It was ORV park 1, street tires 0.
Whats the difference between SX and LX
what is best setting for 2012 Sorrento in snow? i have all weather tires but not studs
winter tires, lock button on, traction control off
U should do a range rover evoque off road
Good review, i guess is Limited
Driver error all the time
rsalaysay don't sugar coated it, what do you really think?
Um...what's the point? To show that all season tires don't work in winter? If so.... steller video. If not... fail. lol
with 4 seasons tires...not very efficient
That thing need tires. Would make a world of difference.
He need winter tires!
Outlander GT please
Too bad the USians didn't get the 2.2 CRDI diesel engine that has more torque than the 3.3 V6 gasoline and need much less fuel AND is more reliable longterm than the V6. 😄
Please can iask did you have winter tyers on if not that's one top of the shop car. If with winter tyers what make size please yours William. The boss leeds Yorkshire England.
William Edwards All of my vehicles come with all-season-tires.
Best for you it’s bicycle 🚲! Diz
does any body know tires are the traction lol
Is Kia watching this?
Off-road with summer tires on winter?? You don't know to off-road!! :))
Might be more of a financial thing .
Old Sorento was a beast offroad because it had 4wd. These new systems are just crappy awd with no lock modes. Maybe having all-terrain tires and a lift kit would have helped.
they do have a lock until about 45kph - same a Hyundai's - only a moron would try this with all seasons...
@@MrKikoboy Still the Old Sorento would beat this one easily in off road
You...are...so...hot!! And funny. Loved it!
Please get a forester out here please please please
Winter tires!!!! AWD does not have any advantage over FWD if you don't use winter tires. There are videos on RUclips proving that.
Check out the crash test its a coffin. Small overlap test dummy dies... Nothing beats Subaru AWD... The Sorento was a 290 HP V6... what would the 2.4 AWD do?
Nothing beats the Subaru and their bad head gaskets failing, the center clutch burning out and failed wheel bearings.. Go Subaru!
All cars had those problems in the past...
I got one last year, brand new 2014 and i hate it !!!!!!
Best for you it’s bicycle 🚲
Its a chopped-top VAN!! Your not supposed to be taking a family-VAN offroad!!!
very frustrating... :(
front saab suv
If you put utter shit tires on the thing how can you expect to test it properly. my car could do better just because of better tires
اصيله
WTF!!!?? a snowy off road review with summer tire!!??? I own a sorento and its much better than this!!!
على زوبي الطراز القديم احسن بكثير
You look kind of nervous and I am sorry for 1st comment
disengage the traction control... very bad driver...making car look bad
buy a Mitsubishi Pajero it is mutch better
Dude, get a subaru....
Juan Dela Cruz Dude, I'm working on it....
Is it the suv not making the hill or the fact he slows down b4 he goes up each hill? Or is it the tires. I recently purchased a 2012 pre-owned and was giving the low end continental tires don' t know if this is std for Kia.
