If this song didn't have to follow up The Hockey Theme, I think more people would like it.
thruxbeinxxcool agreed. But it is better than the current one. The current one is awful.
They shouldn’t have got rid of this one tbh
Totally agree. It's very well done and suits the vibe of HNIC. Way better than the dumb SN theme.
This theme gives me goosebumps.
Me too! The music, the graphics, and the players on there! I wish since I’m American and we take the NFL with pride we had something like this on NBC or Fox! Like Brett Favre, joe Montana, drew brees, Tom Brady, curly lambaeu, all the famous eye opening played and catches from playoffs and super bowls.
"in the world of sport, can there possibly be anything better?" - bob cole a true living legend...
Best opening theme of any sport. Bring it back.
agree ! its a terrific theme !
Not as good as the original
@@noobmaster-wj3qm Exactly
As being a Canadian and having been brought up listening to the old song I loved that one. I was upset when it changed and the first year or so I didn't really like the new one. Then all of a sudden it began to grow on me and now I believe this song is way better than the original. Don't get me wrong, the original one is classic, but the new one I get chills watching and look forward to hearing it every Saturday night. The old one, when I listen to it from time to time, doesn't do the same.
Epic opening, gets me pumped up!!! Absolute goosebumps.
Better than the original imo
No
I disagree strongly, but this is an excellent follow-up. The Sportsnet theme really just proved it.
cant believe they changed it..
+Si_14 They didn't have any choice, they rights were purchased by TSN.
the wonderful widow of the dude who wrote the original decided she wanted more $.
theplayboymaster lol
@@KrokodiliusI know this comment is 6 years old, but she was the composer not her husband.
I agree; I remember hearing Canadian Gold on the radio the day before this year's season started and being really impressed with it, and the DJ kept saying 'it's so much better with the graphics when you see it on television". It really does have an impressive, 'big time' feel to it, eh?
If this didn’t come after the hockey theme, everyone would have loved it.
Dear NHL &NHLPA
Thank you for screwing up my Saturday Nights here in America on the NHL Network
Signed,
An angry American Hockey Fan
Oh well...I could listen to this theme all day and night because I, As an American absolutely LOVE it. Maybe I need to have lived up in Canada to have the attachment to the old theme but this is the one I relate to.
GIVE ME BACK MY NHL!!!!
Old hockey footage always looks so damn epic, it's ridiculous.
This theme is good, and I commend the songwriter wholeheartedly...
But always remember, the only reason they ditched the ORIGINAL theme is because they didn't want to pay an old lady her royalties.
I love this intro and the song. The only gripe about the video is that it is a tad bit Penguins heavy. What I mean is, you have multiple shots of Crosby and Lemieux. Both greats no doubt. I would have loved to have seen other greats like Modano, Patrick Kane, Kovalchuk, Luongo, etc.
Me too - I feel the same way when I watch this clip. All the greats from the past - Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, Howe - along with those iconic voices - Foster Hewitt, Danny Gallivan, Bob Cole - I get shivers every time I watch this. CBC did a phenomenal job on this. It makes me proud to be a Canadian and it captures perfectly what this game means to us.
You said it Dude. I have watched this clip dozens of times. It is perfect in every way. Music is great, montage is great and the voices are great. It gives you the same feeling of excitement that you get when you actaully go to a game. I had it posted on my Pee Wee team's website so that the kids could see it and we could discuss it.
THe original brings back memories that can never be matched! we only got 3 stations living in Buffalo ny, 2, 4, 7, ....on overcast nights for some reason we got 9, and 11, ...a little fuzzy, but we could take our baths and settle down and watch the game...it was a magical time. Sometimes things change, but not for the better. the old song was the best!
We may live wherever in the U.S., but Saturday night , October through April, is Hockey Night in Canada.
American hockey fan here (Go Rangers!) and I got to see a lot of HNIC when I was living in Northern New York. This song is a fine substitute for the Hockey Song. CBC and hockey fans across Canada should be happy about this new song. Well done.
Goosebumps!!! HNIC always comes through with solid video. Thanks for posting!
i wish i can find the raw audio track for this. this was hockey in the 2010s
Better than the crap Sportsnet is using. This theme was a fine replacement after losing the rights to the hockey theme
This is great, and as I have mentioned elsewhere in this thread, NBC should also use it as their NHL theme music.
The thing is, it was my music teacher who directed the band that played the song.
(from a totally independent point of view, I am from UK ) .. this IS a worthy successor to the old theme .. ;))its dynamic & exciting .. also the visuals are good ...
It might not be able to touch the old theme, but they did an amazing job retouching it and tweaking it to make it a damn good substitute.
I feel proud to be a Canadian every time I hear this song
waybetter than the sportsnet version
Bang on. A buddy of mine from the States is just getting into hockey, and he gets HNiC on his satellite. I described it to him as "the best produced sports show in the world" - a great theme (then and now), beautiful production, iconic voices and history. Ron MacLean is my favourite TV personality ever, and good, bad, or indifferent, everyone should see Don Cherry a few times.
Best hockey intro you’ll ever see. No cap
still get goosebumps everytime i hear this song with this video, its truly canadian.
"In the world of sports, can there possibly be anything better?"
He's gotta be talking about this song...
A Bender And Hockey. Nothing any better than Hockey
this is better then the tsn version of the old song
This is actually really awesome
Much better than the 2021 one...
This tune and intro is far and away, the best. The old tune doesn't hold a candel to this song.
CBC definitely made lemonade out of a lemon on this one. I really dig it.
Down here NBC has music but no intro, and I can't even remember what Versus does so it can't be that great. Besides, American networks recycle this kind of music so often that almost nothing gets enough time to become an institution like the old HNIC song.
Nice of CBC to work in all six Canadian teams in the montage for you, too.
grew up with the previous anthem.....was pretty choked when it was sold to tsn.
but man oh man....this is fuckin EPIC!!!
"scores.....BOBBY ORR!!!!"
In the world of sports, can there possibly be anything better?
Reminds me of when hockey was about the love of the game and winning the cup !!! Now it's all about the $
James, the song is only ten years old. Trust me, hockey was all about money long before then.
this is better than the current one
I'm lucky that I live in Upstate New York (Watertown) and I get CBC on my cable system. I've loved HNIC for years. I watched it since 1984 when I was 4. It's a Saturday Night Tradition that my fiance gladly shares with me.
I'm 30 and the original theme will live on forever in my mind. But due to politics, another track had to be chosen, and I think they did a great job with this one, it will carry the new torch for televised canadian hockey....
I used to hate the fact this song won, but I have jumped on the bandwagon now, I love this song.
So many iconic moments in that
One of the few things I miss about not living in Northern New York (St. Lawrence County) anymore. We got CBC and CTV on our cable system up there, so I got to see HNIC every weekend. Was lovely.
I'm a big Rangers fan, but I love watching hockey, especially during the playoffs. This is a great theme song and I'm happy I have NHL Network so I can see at least one HNIC game.
I see more people are warming to this theme. Told ya. It's good, man. This theme just says hockey.
because for many of us, that song was part of our childhood. i remember saturday nights looking forward to that song!!!
I know a ton of Canadians hate that the old theme is gone, but I do dig this one, too. Not as iconic, definitely, and likely never will be, but as sports themes go it's pretty damn solid.
I hope I don't offend anyone, but I love this song and I also loved the old theme! I love both of them!
You hope you don't offend anyone? Just because you love some music? Please.
This is how Hockey should be broadcasted.
Versus and NBC take note, we Americans should know that Canadians are the ones who invented this great game. We should learn from CBC and how they broadcast games as passionately as they do.
if NBC or VS had the same enthusiasm for Hockey the sport would rise up here in the US where pretty much hockey is non-existent in the major sports world.
I'm so thrilled I'll be moving to Canada after College and begin my broadcasting career.
HNIC FOREVER!
How come CBC doesn't show this clip in its entirety at the begiinning of HNIC - this is so awesome.
I love it. Never thought the old song could be replaced - it was iconic - but this ROCKs. Fantastic.
As sad as it is to not have the original, this is an awesome intro, way better than anything else! In the world of sports, Can there possibly be anything better!
Im lucky, i live in detroit so i get CBC and watch hockey night in canada every saturday! Loved the old song, but the whole lawsuit turned me off to it. This new song is frickin great, gives me chills down my spine everytime. Reminds me of my younger days when i used to travel to canada every other weekend and do battle! Damn you guys! haha
I personally love this tune. Loved the old theme too. This one is different than the original HNIC theme of course, but different is ok. I love the feel of this piece and it gets me pumped up when I hear it. It's more celebratory feeling IMHO. One thing though...I wish they always played the long version (as in this vid) and not the shortened version as they do every Sat night now.
Is there a place where I can buy this song? I love it!
If this song doesn't make you feel pumped than you ain't alive
To be truely Canadian. You have to appreciate this.
Lemme say that sadly since I'm an American I didn't get to watch HNIC when they had the old "Hockey Theme" so I can't feel the pain that most of Canada has felt with losing "The Hockey Song"
That said I have to tell you that since the US NHL Network has the rights to air Scotiabank's Hockey Tonight, Hockey Night in Canada and After Hours not only has the show grown on me but this beautiful theme song has as well.
Jim Hughson, Craig Simpson, Mark/Mark you got a new fan and I'll see ya on Sat.!
Agreed, but that's exactly my point. Will they show Crosby twice? Will the reel of Sid on this video be replaced? If so, by whom?
Awesome.
Period.
HNIC made the right choice when they went with this theme. Everything about it fits...mixing classic and new players, great calls, and the music.
And to answer the question at the end...no, there can't. This IS better.
jask dont hate on crosby he is an amazing player, and the new theme is just showing all the best of the best from our proud canadian history of hockey and it is amazing.
Great song and when he says "In the world of sports, can there possibly be anything better." It just sends CHILLS down my spine. Awesome! I don't care about the naysers, the other theme will always be classic but this is a pretty damn good replacement!
I've defended this song a million times, and unfortunately, I will a million more. I vehemently maintain that if 100 Canadians heard this for the first time today, and the old theme for the first time today, 98 of them would prefer this.
The countdown to the new hockey season is on everyone!!!!
I remember when the old one started and it took some time to take hold. It did with some good video choreographic.
This one is already warming up to me.
People we may not realize it now, and its only human nature to not realize it yet, but this theme will be as iconic to the next generation as the previous one is to us. So in the interest of being a part of history, I am going to fully embrace this theme NOW, and in the future I'll be able to say "Shit you know what, I knew this theme rocked the first time I heard it, but everyone else was a doubter!"
Theoren Fleury baby.
damn that is frigen cool.
Greatest hockey theme ever, especially with Lidstrom raising the Cup!
Agreed!
Also here's a question to the folks over at the US NHL Network: Why do we only get ONE game of the "Hockey Night in Canada" doubleheader? It seems to me that if "Hockey Night" is a doubleheader we SHOULD get both games! Granted we do get to see the second game on Sundays, but that ain't the same!
like many here who have commented, I am American and i LOVE this theme song! the old theme was great, but this one just sounds more epic! Being a Chicago fan, can't wait to see my boys either Patty Kane or, more likely, Jonathan Toews hoist the cup at the end of this video next season! :D
Linden was a good touch - has there ever been more of a cult following for any other player? Vancouver fans freakin loved him!
I think that CBC losing the hockey night theme was a blessing, sure it was a great song and a great part of hockey heritage but losing it allowed Canadian musicians across the nation to showcase their talent and their passion for the sport which unites our great nation...and come up with this great theme.
so much better than the last theme.
I really mean that. It really is better much more of an epic feel and this theme makes me more excited for the game than the last one.
Yes sir. Nickelback's Saturday Night opens the show, followed, typically, by a quick commercial, then this theme.
NBC should use this music when their coverage of the NHL resumes next weekend (January 19th-20th) and produce a similar opening.
The opening could begin with the original 1957 "This Program Is Brought To You In Living Color.." animation superimposed on the rink, an old audio recording of Fred Cusick, Marty Glickman or Lloyd Pettit calling an opening faceoff, then use computer animation of great players skating around or through past NBC logos (chimes, snake, N, Proud N, etc.).
I was on my way to the Islanders Devils game on wednesday, I was on a NJ Transit train and I started to play this on my blackberry..low and behold a sing along broke out!
I wouldn't mind hearing this being played during the Changing of the Guard in Ottawa or Buckingham Palace.
Bring back our song!!😓
@CanadianGuitarist totally agree I hum this everyday its actually my go to hum. I live in Vancouver so anytime I see anything Hockey related or hell sports related for that matter I hum this tune away!!
I don't watch Hockey, I don't live in Canada... and I still get lumps in my throat when I watch this.
Many classic moments in Canadian hockey history. Thats what hits me right in the gut with this video. Check it out hockey guys. It sucks the old anthem is gone. I personally was choked when cbc HNIC lost it. But lets try to embrace this new one. Its actually not that bad. You just gotta listen to it a few times! Bobby Orr flying through the air after being tripped by Picard, man my maple leaf heart is in my throat. What other image invokes the pride of "True Canadian" hockey better than that?
Good memories of 2012. That first season I started watching hockey, that first game where I became a flames fan. Good memories
I think I've grown to like this better than the last theme, and it will definitely become a classic in a few years. Obviously still love the old one but I'm not missing it.
Also I appreciate them putting Ovechkin in there, it's a celebration of Canada but also of hockey, and whether you like it or not he's one of the best!
Why doesn't CBC show this clip in it's entirety on Saturday nights - it's only a minute long? I hate that they chop it up.
i can watch it 20 times and not get sick of it. but i have an idea for a minor reboot for next year. when bobby orr is sailing through the air, keep the slow-mo.....but add a sequence of flash bulb SOUNDS....like P-TOOPH, P-TOOPH, P-TOOPH etc. the fan flash-bulbs are visible....just add some awesome audio to the background of this great theme!
Bagpipes give me the chills everytime
Wonder what they'll do for next season now that Crosby has a Cup? Switch spots with him and Lidstrom at the end?
I wouldn't mind seeing Ray Bourque somwhere in that package, either.
I love this intro, it amps me up everytime
Holy shit this theme is so dominating.....gets the blood pumping!
who's the captain wearing the blue jersey at the very end of the video, right after Yzerman and Linden?
Justin Wang Crosby
German here. Is it bad to listen this song everytime before i turn on a stream and watch hockey?
I miss this intro
Here we are at the end of the regular season, and doesn't it feel like Canadian Gold has always been the HNIC theme, if you know what I mean.
Whereas I heard The Hockey Theme on TSN the other night & it just left me cold...
I'm stuck in the UK right now working on a graduate university degree... I can't get HNIC over here, the 'net blocks it out...
This was the first time I saw the new intro. It's great - it puts together some great scenes (I'm a Canucks fan, so it's great to see Linden), but as awesome as the intro + music is, it really isn't a replacement for the original.
I *am* glad they didn't screw up and pick something lame, though.
at first i didnt really like it, now i love it, its so catchy!
Good call. Every single word you said is truth.
That's still not the fault of the current theme; I didn't want the original theme lost either. My beef is with Dolores Claiman...at least, it would be if I didn't prefer this song. To each their own, I suppose.
didnt really care about the old theme to be honest but i really love this new one.
I completely agree. Perhaps it's because TSN made a mess of the old tune, perhaps it's because I've simply come to accept the new tune, but either way, this theme has definitely warmed up on me a LOT.
