My family and I used to watch every episode back when the judges were Randy, Paula, and Simon. It was more entertaining than it is now. And it was hilarious when they would show the bad auditions and the 3 of them would be trying so hard not to laugh. Now they don't even show the bad auditions.

The judges, primed and ready, all hear the talented, the dull, the boring, and, oh my word, the hilarious(Got to love pants on the ground😂). As the people who are auditioning are singing, the judges are carefully noting strengths and weaknesses of the singers without a quick push of a button, some brutally honest and some easing the truth to the ears of the lucky and unlucky. The fortunate achieves the goal of getting the Golden Ticket to Hollywood to obtain their wildest of dreams while the others, either take it like a champ or the logo is over their mouths, pack their bags to go home. With the arrival of the Golden Ticket holders, they go on the stage amongst a live audience and sing their heart out in front of the judges to become the next American Idol!
I still remember watching season 1 live and being floored when Tamyra went home. Season 1 didn't have the huge ratings of 2-9 and it was clearly cheap but so many great memories. Literally every Kelly Clarkson performance, Nikki escaping the bottom 3 every week, Simon calling RJ a loser and Randy standing up ready to fight Simon for that, Christina not being there for the results because she was taken to the hospital and then going home anyway, Tiffany Montgomery changing her name to Ryan Starr for the live shows, people bringing up flowers for the contestants, it's TAMIKA, AJ's cuteness but not being able to sing very well, Jim's sad story about his deaf parents, Justin Guarini just being Justin Guarini, Kelly's winning moment singing A Moment Like This, Kelly and Justin doing From Justin to Kelly after the show. Pure gold
Season 1 had great ratings for a summer show, that’s why it got picked up for a regular run in the spring the next year. Can’t compare summer ratings to in-season ratings
I watched American Idol from 2005 to 2011/2012 with my family. I was probably too young for the first two seasons since they were on a school night. The later years were just ‘meh, whatever’.
I was 10 years old when the first season aired, and I remember seeing few episodes here and there and watching the finales, but I didn't get super into the show and watch every single episode until season 3. Then I watched it up until season 9 when I was a senior in high school. But I definitely started losing interest after Paula and Simon both left. And it definitely wasn't the same once all three original judges were gone. I sure do miss the old days of American Idol!

In 8th grade, I was teased by a bus driver for Katharine McPhee losing to Taylor Hicks in 2006. I rooted for Jordin Sparks, Blake Lewis, David Archuleta, Adam Lambert and James Durbin who is a neurodivergent like myself. In summer 2012, I took a picture with Thia Megia, one of the contestants who got voted off the show the year before, at a theme park.
Before The Walt Disney Company-owned company ABC acquired the rights to the show back in 2017 for season 16 of the returning revival series in which it on the network in 2018 up to present year 2023 and many many years to come!

I never liked American Idol, but it was one of the best shows on Fox til they made the stupidest mistake of letting it end. Hope their new owners are more kind and at least more willing to give new shows a try before they cancel them.
