Wig Making for Dolls - How to save time and money dyeing alpaca hair

- Hello my RUclips friends :D In this episode of Wigs Untangled I will show you an alternative way to dye your alpaca fiber which is much cheaper, faster and easier.

FYI -- alpaca (and any other animal fiber) can also be dyed using food coloring. Check out ChemKnit's tutorials on yarn dying, particularly techniques using the microwave. The key elements are dye, acid (vinegar) and heat.

+Virginia Tracy I just had a look, thanks for the suggestion, it is always good to know about alternative ways that give you similar results :) Using fabric dyes or hair dyes still seems easier though, so I think I will stick to these for now.

But do you know if this, or even the human hair dyes would stain the doll?

this method can stain your doll but there are ways to avoid it , like not dyeing all the way to the roots,or putting scotch tape on the head before putting on the cap
I love purple
You can use food color and vinegar to dye alpaca and then heat it in a microwave. All the dye will soak into the fiber and you won't have the long rice or salt that can damage the fiber.

Hey Nicole you should do a video of were to get wigs from not just from 1 website like a couple so it's easier for us and can you use nail polish remover to remove first paints also can you use acrylic paints to paint the doll hope you reply 😘😍
i would like to start repainting monster high dolls and making wigs for them i was wondering if in the future you could make a video on taking a wig off a monster high doll and also a video on how to put the alpaca fiber on the wig cap this would be wonderful so i can get started on making wigs.

Hey Andreja, question! I tried dyeing my dark blonde/light brown alpaca fiber to red using semi permanent hair dye and I am having trouble getting even coverage and it just isn't getting as dark as I was hoping, and it seems like most of it comes out when I rinse even with no soap :( Would it be ok to use this method with the fabric dye on the same alpaca locks that I've already tried dyeing with hair dye, or will the chemicals react and damage the hair or not work properly?
What do you do with the parts of the hair you do not dye in this process? Do you still use it?

My Wigs Untangled series will cover every single aspect of wig making. I have a massive list of topics to cover so the series will take awhile to finish. If you are in a hurry I suggest you to check my Doll F.A.Q. where I have links to tutorials I used to learn wig making, or you can check my Patreon page where I have two series fully released that show the wig making process. I am now taking a break from wig making to try some different aspects of the doll hobby. After all I need to make sure the hobby stays fresh and fun for me, because if something is not fun anymore we tend to move onto different things :)

+CandieKeks As far as I understand all dyes will fade with time and the environmental conditions will play a strong part in that process. It hasn't been a year since I've done this so I can't give you a more detailed answer, but perhaps if you contact Rit they will be able to give you more info.

+Andrea Hooper Pros: cheaper, faster, easier to apply. Cons: complicated to do two tone ombre effect, sometimes it is difficult to know exactly how will the colour look like since the water always gets really really dark.

is there an alpaca fiber substitute? because i prefer to no use any animal based fiber. I'm glad you will post later the full process of wig making, i wil hope this. Also i understand you need to make money, every artist want and deserve to obtain profit from their work.

+Milenka Prod Alpacas are not hurt in the process of cutting their hair/fur unless he person trimming their hair is ridiculously reckless or cruel. but if you have an allergy to animal fur. Alpacas don't have dander and their fur is hypoallergenic.

I was wondering how long have you been performing face ups because your amazing. Also can I use normal hair dye like splat?
I've been painting faceups for 7 years now. I've never used splat colours so i cant say for sure, but it should be okay.
Does the fabric dye bleed onto the doll's clothes or body (if cloth)?
Yes. So if you wanna dye a dolls hair, just dip the hair. And put small pieces of scotch tape around your dolls head and make sure the dye bleed up until the roots of it. Thanks, hope it helps!😉

I'm wondering, can you use wool that you can get at a craft store? because i have some and i was wondering if it would make a difference?
+ChiChi's Creatures possibly, I've never worked with wool. I learned a large portion of what I know by experimenting so perhaps give it a go to see what happens.

+Sade Rucker Nah it doesnt only work on alpaca hair, Rit is fabric dye so it can work on a variety of materials :) I am sure there should be a list somewhere on the web with more info, but if you can't find it then at least it is not expensive to try it out on a section of your doll's hair.

+Viochann If your wig is made with alpaca fiber you can bleach it to remove pigment. The Rit dyes as shown on this videos work only as additive pigments so you cannot make the fiber lighter.

I don't think it will work the same on nylon or saran just because those are basically plastics and have different properties. But you could still try it and see what happens.
Could you do a video on how to dye doll hair like Barbie or Monster High dolls? I'm doing a custom My Little Pony and I want to dye the ends of her hair, and I only have plain plastic doll hair. Thank you!
you would have to reroot. take out existing doll hair and root in new doll fibre hair.
+Turtlez1125 As long as its is nylon or saran hair fabric dye will color it. Make sure you hot water because the color comes out more vibrant.

I actually used Rit fabric dye on the hair I had. It did not take the color in, unfortunately. Did I have to to do and extra step or something?
+Turtlez1125 You could try mixing a few drops acrylic ink with 70% rubbing alcohol. I've never used it on doll hair but it works very well on heat resistant wigs.

Yeah, I have a ton of different online stores listed in my past Wigs Untangled episode. Your choice will depend if you need raw or processed hair, a specific colour, length and your budget.

Would it work if I used the hair from fake wigs instead of buying alpaca hair?
+Risalia It depends, not all wigs are made out of the same material.
I can give it a try if you'd like dear if I go out I can try to pic some up today and try with one of my blond strands and see what happens if you haven't.
+Risalia You can't dye synthetic hair fibers you have to get it in the color you want to make the wig out of. A lot of wig making tutorials on here that use synthetic fiber can be applied to making bjd wig making tutorial with a few tweaks here and there. For example wefts making; since Bjds have smaller heads than people you have to make the wefts thinner and shorter which leaves you with more fiber remaining if you were to buy a cheap pre-assembled human sized wig and take it apart.
coconut eater Yeah, I tried doing the wig out of synthetic hair but it looks really odd and not natural. Idk if its because of the cheap material or I didn't do it right, but when the hair is flowing down, instead of it being straight, it looks like a huge curve. idk if you understood I don't really know how to explain.
You can use a hair straightener on it as long as it isn't too hot and if the hair is too shiny just put dry shampoo or baby powder on it. if you want to be safe and not risk melting the wig you can use boiling water or keep your hair straightener at 180-190 degrees. alexapoletti.blogspot.com/2013/09/how-to-straighten-synthetic-wig-using.html

+jessikay251 I would have to try every single type of fabric dye to give you a 100% answer. But technically they SHOULD all work in a very similar way.

+Ianna Kim Jeon no, because the materials wont work properly and you risk to permanently stain the doll which would make it difficult if you wanted to redo her face in the future

+Neeka Moore This is doll customisation, creating OOAK (one of a kind) dolls. "restoration" implies that you are trying to bring back the original look, which is the opposite of what I am doing hehe I hope it helped :)

Where can you find alpaca hair???
I got mine on eBay. There is also etsy. Pre-washed and straightened like in the video is pricy. Unprocessed is cheap but a lot of work.
Will this work on a synthetic wig?
+Ag Dolls Down Under (AGDDU) depends on the material. synthetic wigs can be made from different types of fiber.
All the wigs I am looking at are made from Modacrylic Synthetic Fiber. Do you think that it would absorb the dye?
