Wig Making for Dolls - Raw vs. processed alpaca fiber

- Hi everybody!! Here is chapter 2 episode 1 of my new series Wigs Untangled. This is a quick 101 about alpaca hair, where to buy it and what to expect when receiving it. I initially had the processing part included but then the video became way too long. I will upload the next part soon, so stay tuned ;)

Just to clarify: this is Suri alpaca fleece, it would've been good to have specified this in the video as there is more than one type of alpaca fiber and they can get confused. This fiber is long and silky, but other types such as Huacaya are short and fluffy

One thing you could do to get your fiber for wigs is go to a yarn shop, they usually have a selection of fibers etc for reasonable prices I use lots of different fibers to make wigs for my needle felted and crocheted dolls they usually sell fiber by the ounce which is nice :) also im a big fan of your videos and I wouldnt mind sending you some of my raw alpaca fiber I have about 22 pounds of raw alpaca fleece in my garage and have more than I can do anything with
I have 40 pounds of unprocessed from my local farmer. Washing and drying is a bit of a pain. Then it has to be carded after.
I'm still not complaining though. I bartered for it. :)

I don't have much money for doing it, I need to find a good place for buying it ! I've looking all places u said, but I'm still looking for the cheapest one, but in good quality ^^ I'll probably wait until your washing video for decide wich type or alpaca I'll buy !

So, how much alpaca fiber would you probably need to make a medium length wig for, say, a MH doll? I'm curious about how much you'd have to buy for one wig.

The fiber definately needs to be combed though and its not super long so the combing will combine the fibers making them a lot longer and easier to use for doll hair

I'm trying to make an alpaca fiber wig, however am uncertain about the necessary amount of fiber. As the processed product isn't cheap I would only wish to order the needed amount ^^.

would using wool work if you did it right?
if I wanted to make an extra long wig, would alpaca be an option? Or does it not come 16" or longer as an option? Is this impossible? If so, what type of fibre should I be looking for that will allow me to dye it crazy colours like alpaca does? Thanks
So far I only ever needed a max on 12 inches for my alpaca wigs, I never looked into finding longer locks so I am not entirely sure if that would be possible. I also can't suggest an alternative that would be longer and have the same properties sorry. Since I found alpaca I just stuck with it since it gave me all I needed.

I have sheep with really beautiful wool, so I've saved most of it to clean.
I guess wool works just as well as alpaca hair?

+LPScoolKat not sure, it depends on many factors such as the style of the wig, length, are you buying raw or processed, will you have to dye your hair etc.

this is suri alpaka, because normal baby alpaka is very soft and short.
Andreja, how much alpaca do you use to make reroot in a Monster High doll? I'm thinking of making two dolls that I have, but I have no idea how much I should use in each ... 1 ounce would be enough for each MH?
I do not do reroots so I cannot give you a number sorry. I only make wigs which is a completely different method than rerooting.

Hi! I'm looking for some raw alpaca to work on it, but the one I bought is way too short for what I wanted :/ And I can't find any like the one you show on the video. Any clue? :*
Pasjodesufrir did you try checking the shops that I mention in the video? Last time I checked all of them offered long alpaca locks. But I always make sure to read the description and check the length, if there is no info I would not buy any.
Yes, I've checked them all, and for the fiber I already have, it's just that not all of it is the same length. I'll watch the shops you give in the video, maybe they are out of stock now or something. Thanks!!
would using alpaca yarn also work? would it also be some what the same texture?
I don't think you can turn yarn back into its original state as far as I know.
There are actually a few videos showing people making wigs out of yarn. It requires a bit of brushing, but it's possible. Look up 'How to make yarn wefts'

Ik had het toen over marktplaats, dr zijn alpaca houders die hun wol daar verkopen..... ik heb het uiteindelijk nooit geprobeerd omdat ik toch twijfelde, het is allemaal super onbewerkt dus ik denk dat het heel veel tijd en moeite kost om het goed te krijgen 😅 Daarom kost haar alpacawol vast ook zo veel. Maar ik weet het niet zeker :')
