Making wigs is so therapeutic. I absolutely love making my own wigs and the first thing I realized was having a canvas block head is key. Also, tracing and mimicking your own hairline was another game changing technique I’ve learned over the years. This was so fascinating to watch. I’m working on learning how to ventilate next. I can’t wait.
Just five years ago I was in the cast of a production of The Crucible in Arkansas with Rob as the wigmaster. It’s amazing how far he’s come and he deserves it!!
God I wish I had one of those wigs, I finally got a full lace human hair wig (so it’s similarly made to these with every hair hand tied to the cap) but it’s no where near as realistic as these, mine needs a ton of plucking and fixing of the hairline before it can look anything close to these
premade units def require some tweezing and fixing but there are tons of good tutorials here on youtube. it's a lot of work but i hope you can find a happy medium!
I’ve been a hairstylist for 14 years in Los Angeles and I’ve had plenty of friends that worked in film and or entertainment and I’m so intrigued to learn about this … wonder how much they get paid for this I hope it’s a lot they deserve to make the big bucks for the amount of detail that goes into this process

@@paddyszalbierz9183 hi! What kind of school you attend to be a wigmaker? PS: Is It true that a wig with this amount of work can even cost 20-25k ? What's the average price?
WOW!!! I have actually noticed when wigs look terrible in movies. I had no idea there was such an incredible amount of expertise required to create such convincingly natural ones. What a uncelebrated, painstaking, under-appreciated profession. My hats off to all of you and thank you so much to the makers of this video for sharing this and heralding the unbelievable craftmanship of this trade! I know from personal experience that hair color alone is a very precise skill that very few hairdressers actually master. My own hair pulls red like no one's business and I can pay hundreds of dollars only to have to still tone my own hair to get rid of the orange color that they try to tell me is caused by their lighting.
Something that these kind of companies need to investigate further to effectively replicate it is black hair and all its variations. One frustrating example is House of the dragon, the wigs on the Velaryons look weird, they don’t have a silvery shine, and look more like powdered wigs from the 18th century. Laena’s hair looked specially off and dead. The hair of a woman with her same heritage in our world would never ever look like that. Hopefully HBO will update their methods for the next season.
Yep not a single black person or actor in this video. They make great wigs for white ppl but can’t seem to do the same for black ppl when the only thing that changes abd in my experience can be difficult to get right is scalp colour.
@@guinnevereschronicles2225 their hair has to look exactly the same I’m ever scene and that is not possible for natural hair in a 10 hour day or over a three months of filming
I've been always obsessed/in awe with the wigs, when I was little I wanted to do so much with my hair like my favorite actors did, that's when my mum told me it was all wigs. As I grew older it all started making sense. All these shows and movies brings a whole new layer to it.And all thanks to people like these to make that happen. As a grown woman now, as I dislike my hair, dream is to be able to afford a good wig and shave my entire hair off. (may be the feeling will change) and I also grateful that I have hair on my head.. but sometimes its just not enough.
What a fantastic documentary. I just love this kind of storytelling. Props to the makers of this little film. And of course their subjects, the wigmakers, who are awe-inspiring.
I'd love to see a feature length documentary on wig making. A bad wig can totally take us out of the movie or play or music performance. That should be explored too. The unclockable creations are fascinating to me.
Some of these wigs came out amazing but you would think more wigs would actually look good after all this work but there are still so many bad ones in recent tv shows and movies. Also, I noticed the struggles of making wig units or even common hairstyles for different ethnicities...
To be fair, it will depend on the budget and how much a production is willing to pay for it. The bad ones may be from low budget productions or from a team that wants to put money elsewhere like special effects or paying for locations. I know Euphoria had Kim Kimble as their hair lead, and I hope this gets more black hair stylists and wig makers in big productions. The hairstyles she made for S2 is basically what every Gen Z kid wanted for months.
@@margaesperanza it’s a gatekept industry. They’ll have all the black stylist do the prep but won’t let them on set to get the credit. Speaking from experience
Only a big budget has the experience to get it right max ventilating is a lost art. But the camera picks up on everything. Most productions don’t see hair as a major component and they are usually the lowest paid but you can pad your check by renting the wigs to the studio/production.

1. Purchase a pre-made synthetic wig from Party City 2. Run over it with a 1986 Oldsmobile 3. Set it on fire 4. Slap it around a bit 5. Call it a failure and tell it it'll never amount to anything 6. Apply to the actor and style as normal Very labor intensive.
I once went to a wig store in Mexico City with a friend who by that time was a professional belly dancer and needed a long wig for her presentations as her stylist had literally fried her hair and she had to cut it very short. The wig she required needed to be made of natural hair as artificial hair is much stiffer and doesn't move naturally. we found the wig of her dreams, one made of natural hair that had undergone a special treatment that allowed you to dye it, bleach it, curl it, straighten it, and basically do whatever you wanted with it. However, the price was the equivalent of 2,000 USD and it was far from having the level of detail of the wigs shown in this video.

@@Alecexo Did you not read that comment properly? Or are you just itching to argue with someone for no reason? They never said anything about buying wigs for themselves, they were specifically talking about wigs used in movies and tv shows. A $200 wig might work great for a regular person going about their daily activities, but it wouldn't look good with the cameras in a professional film studio. Obviously a film studio has the money to spend on much more expensive, custom made wigs that look better and realistic on camera.
This is wildly fascinating! Also makes me realize even more when movies cheap out on the wigs, it’s already often obvious but knowing all the work behind it makes me realize it even more.
I work in film and I have worked on shows that have used wigs from Rob Pickens' studio - even talked to him myself. Anyway I've seen the bill and these wigs can run ya about $6K. But theyre seamless! They also offer rentals when full customization isn't necessary - those are about $4.5K
I’m a dental technician and this is fascinating to me, it’s basically what I do everyday but for dental enamel. I can’t help thinking though of all the labor intensive steps they could skip if they adopted 3d scanning and printing for the data collection and model making.
I've always wondered this. The first time I was blown away by such an impressive wig was with Snow White in Once Upon A Time. I knew she wore a wig because you see actress Ginnifer Goodwin with her real hair and in incredibly impressive wigs in the same episodes. I always wondered how they pulled that off and made it look like her real hair.
Or just wear your real hair more often. It doesn't look that convincing in real life. I mean look at all the customization they have to do, which am sure regular people can't. Like making the wig fit the actor's head shape. It probably still looks fake up close in real life.
Kim Kardashian has some of the best wigs. Im constantly trying to clock her hairline. I know she also uses extensions and bundles but she wears alot of wigs too. I cant even imagine how much they cost.
It's a true art form ✨️ I've had several wigs made for reconstruction dramas and they were so comfy, once when we overshot by several hours, I was taken right back to the hotel. An award for the receptionist who checked in this girl covered in a prosthetic noose swelling, fake dried blood and pretend live creatures crawling in the wig! But, if she had told me I would have sorted it before going to the restaurant. The prosthetics started peeling into the soup. Watching this explains why I thought they used strange colours. It was shot in sepia. Looks great on screen. It would be nice if the people who spend hours doing nothing but this got more credit. 👌
I was amazed with the wigs in LOTR and The Hobbit movies. And also Nuada and Nuala wigs were amazing in Hellboy 2. Those movies started to make me interested in movie wigs. Imagine... you sell your hair and it gets there a movie wig maker, and not long after, one of your favorite actor or actress will wearing it in a movie. :)
I have always wanted to that kind of work , I’m amazed how much work is put into a custom made wig for a part and I have been cutting and styling hair for 35 years now . This was just a dream 😊
These wigs used to be kind of a hidden gem/secret in Hollywood many years ago, then celebrities started wearing them regularly and getting their own custom made ones to wear on their daily lives, I knew about them as a hairdresser but not seen them up close and how they were made or applied until my ex boss brought them to the Uk from America and I was mesmerised and wanted to learn how to make them I can ventilate hairs into the lace took a couple of goes, but not made a full lace wig but hope to one day (specially if I go bald) it's an amazing artistic job and to make them look so real is an art form in itself, would've loved to have been able to work on these wigs and learn to make them, was a dream of mine, takes a lot of patience and dedication to make each one but the results are so worth it, amazing video, thanks.
Honestly, this made me appreciate my own natural hair even more. It would take a lot of professional effort to nail down this exact look with a wig if someone played me in a movie!
Stunning work and so important. I recently saw something (can't remember what) and the lace front of an actor's wig was visible in some lighting. Pulled me right out of the story each time it happened.
I like how they put 4K in the title as if it meant they’re making wigs just for 4K films even though resolution does not matter at all in terms of realism unless it’s lower than 720p.
The thing is with Millie especially, we all knew it was a wig and with all the effort they put in to producing a hyper-realistic wig, it didnt look it. A lot can be learnt(and is) from black hair videos on YT as theyre at the forefront of wig innovation which is readapted to film and television. Basically, hyperrealistic wigs can be achieved with less effort and capital.
Imagine if this service was available to people who suffered alopecia or hair loss due to cancer ….as tedious and laborious and expensive as this …it would be wonderful too
The detail is amazing. Makes me wonder all the more why HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (with all the money HBO has) that all those Targarian blonde wigs looked like WIGS.
they actually looked great to me, super realistic and I've seen a lot of praise for them. Especially the front of the wigs because you couldn't see any lace. (This isn't counting the Black characters as I do think their wigs left a lot to be desired).
I was looking for this comment. I think the reason is that they used synthetic hair and the hairline wasnt plugged properly. They said it was too expensive to produce so much light blonde wigs, because light blonde is one of the most expensive color. So they decided to use synthetic hair and you can clearly see it. It has a weird shine and the movement looks so unreal. Hope they can change at least for the main characters the wigs in the new season. And lets not talk about all of the Velaryon wigs. Just horrible. Danys Wig was real human hair and is by far the best Targaryen Wig.
@@UniquelySustainable Oh, I agree about the lace factor - a big issues especially in the age of HDTV - it's even more evident than in film. My critique is that the hair looked like straw

Good luck!
How are you doing now?
Have a nice day. God loves you. :)
Yeah but it’s easy to get that natural look if you pluck the hairline a bit & bleach the knots. Black women have made an art of it
Now this is what you call real wig making!! Wow!! The attention to detail is incredible.
shutout to all da sistahs drooling at how they wish dem wigs at beauty supply store were.
I’ve been a hairstylist for 14 years in Los Angeles and I’ve had plenty of friends that worked in film and or entertainment
and I’m so intrigued to learn about this … wonder how much they get paid for this I hope it’s a lot they deserve to make the big bucks for the amount of detail that goes into this process
I'm studying to be a wigmaker in the UK, and here at least it is VERY profitable!
@@paddyszalbierz9183 you mean the market is very profitable? so it is usually over priced?
@@minhtam5193 no, there just isnt very many theatrical wig makers here that have the level of skill for TV in terms of how many are demanded by industry. The pay is reflecting just how much work has to go into these
@@paddyszalbierz9183 hi! What kind of school you attend to be a wigmaker? PS: Is It true that a wig with this amount of work can even cost 20-25k ? What's the average price?
@@paddyszalbierz9183 It's profitable in the US too, so I don't understand why you hsd to say it like that
I bow downnn to these wigmakers’ level of dedication for the storytelling
Something that these kind of companies need to investigate further to effectively replicate it is black hair and all its variations. One frustrating example is House of the dragon, the wigs on the Velaryons look weird, they don’t have a silvery shine, and look more like powdered wigs from the 18th century. Laena’s hair looked specially off and dead. The hair of a woman with her same heritage in our world would never ever look like that.
Hopefully HBO will update their methods for the next season.
Wow! Thanks for saying that. I was thinking the same thing. Sometimes the hair just looks all wrong!
They need to hire a black hairstylist from Atlanta. Hair will be on point from then on
lol they need to hire Hair VivI or RPG show
Yep not a single black person or actor in this video. They make great wigs for white ppl but can’t seem to do the same for black ppl when the only thing that changes abd in my experience can be difficult to get right is scalp colour.
@@dhshsvsingd3374 right 🤣
The Betty Ford transitions are outstanding!
this is so cool. I honestly had no idea so much detail went into this. im impressed 😳
I honestly didn’t know that wigs were..used often in film? I legitimately thought the actors just changed their hair for their roles.
Many times they do, but they use wigs to avoid potential irreversible damage to the actors hair
This is so intense. I wonder what the average number of hours is it takes to make these kinds of wigs.
These movie/TV Insider episodes are so good
Incredible detail and artistry!
The attention to detail is incredible! Who would of thought there was so much thought put into the wigs
It's mind-blowing how many people are not aware of how much work goes into this
Fascinating how complex this process is. I hope they're well compensated for all this hard work!
I loved this ! As a cosmologist & loving the whole process of Hair this was very interesting and needed
@@Jypsyhussle that is so interesting to hear. I was actually thinking with how popular wigs are in Black culture and how most are made in China these two demographics would be at the forefront of this. I've seen videos of wigs being made from scratch from us but I guess this doesn't translate to actually getting into industries like this.
@@UniquelySustainable China manufactures wigs but they use machines which can’t give that special touch that hand tied knots can. They like to use the black girls for the braiding and creativity but that’s it!
I love that the professionals use tape mannequins/patterns the same way any cosplayer making a costume at home does.
you fr or jp? obviously they took techniques from professionals
@@Zzz2x they never said they didnt. its just interesting that this is the best technique and its accesible to all
I wish this was longer or a series. I love it!!
How about a Part Two of this video showing how Tyler Perry movie wigs are made!
🤣🤣🤣🤣....duct tape...he doesn't allow his people time to work..he to busy trying to shoot a trilogy in 5 hours..those damn wigs go from toddlers to 90 year old troll in 30 minutes HORRIBLE
😆
1. Purchase a pre-made synthetic wig from Party City
2. Run over it with a 1986 Oldsmobile
3. Set it on fire
4. Slap it around a bit
5. Call it a failure and tell it it'll never amount to anything
6. Apply to the actor and style as normal
Very labor intensive.

Nice to see this. Makes it hard ti explain why so many shows and movies today still use horrendous crappy wigs.
Cutting corners and not wanting to pay 😂
Ordinary people are doing wigs like this on a daily basis for only like $200 they’re just lazy and don’t wanna do research
@@Alecexo the cheap wigs that ordinary people wear would look awful under the intense film lights and on the high quality cameras. if they could just buy a wig for $200 that would actually look good they would lmao.
@@imsadlol4528 you literally can 😂😂 you know nothing about wigs if you think you can’t get a good wig for $200 sometimes even as low as $100 depending on the length 😂. But keep wasting your money, it’s your pockets that’s burning not mine.
Incredible artists
Amazing! Skill, art, and science all together!❤
O.O so much work and craftsmanship just for a wig, man film productions are crazy. But truly worth it.
The entertainment industry has always been the place to look for the best in Prosthetics in my humble opinion.
THIS is journalism. These were the types of content i saw that made me want to be a journalist.
Sisters doing lace fronts pay attention 🔥👏🏾
Or just wear your real hair more often. It doesn't look that convincing in real life. I mean look at all the customization they have to do, which am sure regular people can't. Like making the wig fit the actor's head shape. It probably still looks fake up close in real life.
@@nusaibahibraheem8183 we can wear our real hair and also wear wigs when we feel like, we are free women
Brilliantly put together short documentary. 10/10 editing and story telling.
I was so impressed with the transformation in Blonde.
I love wigs so much. Truly an art. Shoutout to them, shoutout to wig companies and hair stylists!
shutout to all da sistahs drooling at how they wish dem wigs at beauty supply store were.
I love these people who really have a passion on something specific and get deep into it like some kind of nerd-legend in between, love it
Fascinating, they are real works of art. I love how he described that they even pay attention to the growth pattern
I have always wanted to that kind of work , I’m amazed how much work is put into a custom made wig for a part and I have been cutting and styling hair for 35 years now . This was just a dream 😊
Tyler Perry need these wig makers for his movies cause baby, his movie wigs look like hats.
Pickens' level of craft, especially for someone so young, is stunning.
She should’ve done the wigs for the house velaryon on house of dragons. God those wigs were horrendous.
Needing some major plucking !!
9:28 😂 I am so dumb, I had to play this back a couple times to make sense of “armpit-length hair” 🤣.
This was actually so interesting to watch. I didn’t realize how much work went into one wig.
1:28 I thought they said "pork and stuffing" and that confused me so bad 😭
I did this and saw this comment as I was rewinding LOL
From the meticulously placed embellishments to the flawless stitching, it's pure perfection *luxdups*
What about wigs for other hair types what are their challenges when it comes to that? I would really like to know
Black people notoriously get shitty wigs for movies so I don't think their texture is a priority at all
What an artistically satisfying and fun job. So interesting.
Black women around the world watching this like “what’s new?”

@@muimi365 i wish what?
This is hella incredible. It’s essentially fashion design and draping using hair instead of textiles
I have a good eye, and I could tell she was wearing a wig. But still, they did an AMAZING job on Millie!
Love the details on Eddie’s wig color. Thanks for including it!
I like how she beat the crap out of the head in the beginning XD
Honestly, this made me appreciate my own natural hair even more. It would take a lot of professional effort to nail down this exact look with a wig if someone played me in a movie!
This was fun and interesting to watch, and how real they look is crazy!
Rachel McAdams in Mean Girls. That was the BEST wig I’ve ever seen fr
Awesome Content. I applaud the work of the wig makers
Stunning work and so important. I recently saw something (can't remember what) and the lace front of an actor's wig was visible in some lighting. Pulled me right out of the story each time it happened.
Amazing detailed work!
Yeah black hairstylists are light years ahead with less money at their disposal
ABSOLUTELY EXTRAORDINARY SKILLS SET. What a great career!
Imagine if this service was available to people who suffered alopecia or hair loss due to cancer ….as tedious and laborious and expensive as this …it would be wonderful too
Taika Waititi's Blackbeard wig in Our Flag Means Death is absolute magic! Insanely incredible! It even survived the underwater shots!
The detail is amazing. Makes me wonder all the more why HOUSE OF THE DRAGON (with all the money HBO has) that all those Targarian blonde wigs looked like WIGS.
😂🤣😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭🤣🤣
they actually looked great to me, super realistic and I've seen a lot of praise for them.
