A grizzly bear wouldn’t stick around in a territory scent marked by a mountain lion or a pack of wolves.

I don't think the tyrannosaur was afraid. It did pass through the Carnotaurus territory, after all, whereas the Raptors absolutely avoided it. The tyrannosaur probably wanted to avoid confrontation.
@@sle558 while a Rex is much stronger than a Carno, Carnos dont really go Solo, and even if a T-rex can handle both, Its still not worth the trouble and the wound a T-Rex would sustain. Unlike humans, Wild animals has no Hospitals and they dont know how to tend to really deep wounds. An injured Rex is in a much higher risk when it gets jumped. Wild animals understands this If its not worth it, they will not engage in a fight unless they have no other choice. The wild is a brutal place
The silent, camouflaged stalking right here had *me* guessing all the way to where the Carnotaurs were revealed in full later in the book. The level of thought Crichton put into them (however small a role they played in the overall story) still amazes me to this day.

I think I'll do its POV here: I wake up from my long sleep. I stretch my limbs, sniffing the area. I'm Micah, and I am a Mussaurus, at least, according to those tree-creatures. I sniff further, and I freeze with horror. I smell the scent. Carnotaurs. Those horned sharp-toothed predators, with nasty bites and color-changing scales. I sniff again. Stale. It's daytime. I relax. I know they don't hunt during the day, so I simply trot away and start eating some nearby leaves. I may be small, but my appetite is huge. Suddenly, I catch a whiff of a weird smell. I freeze. I hope it's not a predator. I sniff it closely. And I realize that these are no predators. And then, I see them. Tree-creatures. Those creatures that are scaleless and stand like trees on their two legs. There's two of them. One turns its head. It saw the bush I was in move. I step out. Slowly, it extends its clawless hand. By scent, I realize it is male. I cock my head once and then climb on. I curiously investigate. I see his mouth turn into this weird shape. From what I can tell from his scent, he's happy and excited. Suddenly I catch a faint whiff of Carnotaurus scent, this time fresh. I hiss, trying to alarm the tree-creatures, and I bolt for it. I hear rustles. Then high-pitched cries. As I run, I hear a few more screams. The tree-creatures are being attacked, I realize. I see the Carnotaurus pair drag him into the forest. I hear their dreadful roars, and then nothing but silence.
Actually, maybe that's something a paleontologist might not know, given they generally work woth fossils and not live animals, and have little practical experience of behaviour, as well as the fact that the behaviour of dinosaurs is a relatively mysterious subject, as not a lot can be deduced about if from fossils. I'm not sure about this, as I've never really read about any paleontologist outside the fictional ones in the jurassic park series, but it's just a thought
Y'know I just realized that given the novel Carnotaurus camouflage ability it's possible the pair also inhabit the movie version of Isla Sorna. We just haven't seen them yet. And, maybe, despite InGen's extensive ecological stripping of the island, they're still around, hidden in plain sight. Living off the couple herbivore species left over, like a few Gallimus flocks & Parasaur herds.
I loved that he tried to show us how little we actually knew about the animals. Though its likely genetic, that fact still stands. I was just thinking today, it'd be cool if a dinosaur had the ability to confuse prey by mimicking the sounds of its prey... like a mocking bird.
I love your channel but love the Michael Chrichton videos the most. I read Jurassic Park twice back to back in 1990, and then a third time while waiting for the movie after I heard it was in works. I read The Lost World the day it was released non stop in one sitting, stopping only long enough to eat one meal. Then again a few days later but over a few days so I could pause to reflect at such magnificence. Then 2 more times after the release of the trailer waiting for the movie. I know you don't agree and thats fine with me but The Lost World, to me is by far the best novel out of the 2. I can honestly say i still think it's the best book i have ever read. And I read 50 to 100 books a year and have since the mid 1980's so that's saying a LOT. And i am also a huge Michael Chrichton fan in general and have read ALL his books and actually cried the day he died. To say he was a visionary is like saying Albert Einstein was "fairly bright guy". Anyway, it always makes my week when you read excerpts from his books and have convinced me to buy and read them just a few more times. Thanks so much!!!! Your the best. Btw, the one good thing about being old is I have seen every single Jurassic movie in theaters since 1993 and as i said read both books before i even knew they were going to be movies. It's one of the best parts about the book. The mysteries of site b before it's even realized. I hated how the movie just threw it out there like it the most natural thing in the world to hear there WAS a site B and downplayed it's entire existence when that's the most unnatural an farthest thing from the truth you could get. Just my opinion but I was sincerely saddened by the way the existence of site B was discovered, downplayed, and treated. I'm almost desperate to hear your opinion on it.

All according to plan. The best thing is knowing what you'll upload next according to the subject of the last few videos. And being a novel reader, I know you have plenty more material. That part is my one of my favorite. I like when the idea of danger in the wilderness is being portrayed raw, and Michael Crichton did a good job of displaying that. It's simply our ecosystem dialed up to 11, animals are way bigger and need to eat more so they constantly hunt, you make yourself noticeable and you're a meal. Human revert back to being preys the instant they set foot on one of these islands.

Michael Crichton has done such an incredible job with storytelling these dinosaur encounters and introductions. This moment with the Mussaurus and the unknown Carnotaurus attack and how they called to each other was very good. I also feel the same way with The Lost World with how the atmosphere really plays into it and I like it that with the dinosaurs roaming freely it feels more like you have actually gone back in time to the Mesozoic or a place where dinosaurs still live in the wild.
When I first read this novel in Freshman year of High School I remember the description of a “curved toe claw” in the scene and when I first read this I just thought the group was being attacked by Velociraptors. I even remembered hearing that the last time I read it. During your narration I didn’t hear a single mention of a curved toe claw which is very confusing to me.
I absolutely loved the night time Carnotaurus scene in The Lost World. I had no idea what the creature was when I read this scene, (maybe a Velociraptor) but now that I do, it takes on a whole new meaning. Thank you for this video, a great reading of a classic scene.
Thank God I suggested this video. When I read this portion of the book, I was on edge and when the main attack happened, I was scared. This video complimented it big time, mainly with the sound effects and your narration, it all made me have chills up and down my body.

I've read the lost world novel off and on over the last 18 years, and I always assumed it was the raptors that grabbed Diego and attacked Levine. I never put two and two together until I saw your video on the history of the Carnotaurus in the JP franchise.
The fact that the Carnotaurus was so stealthy when it attack the paleontologist reminds me why I was spooked about the Carnotaurus in the Disney movie dinosaurs and why in general I really used to be terrified of these guys when I was a kid over something like the T-Rex.
For me, my favorite reveal in the franchise (Even tho it isn't a Dinosaur), is without a shadow of a doubt, Dominion's Dimetrodon! I seriously never thought we'd get to see that thing ever show up in the films, but when Grant waved that torch in front of him as he reached the top of the ladder only to reveal the greatest jumpscare of that film in Dimetrodon... Damn... I was ecstatic!

Omg so I just finished listening to the audio book to jurassic park, and the whole time all I could think about is how much better I would have enjoyed the experience if it was you reading it! Have you ever thought about doing that, this video is another great example of how much you truly bring it to life, even though I do think the sound effects and pictures do help😂😂
I think I remember finding a carnotaurus in ingen’s field guide and it stated that they had a camouflaging ability. I may be wrong and it might not be official but if it is then it’s cannon that the carnos do have this ability. But maybe it was for the old generation of carnos on Sorna and not the new nublar ones as they need to be seen by the guests. It would be cool if they still retained that ability though. Would be thrilling to see them implement it in the final movie.
I remember thinking at first Diego was killed by a Raptor but then reading that AMAZING passage later with Thorne and the two Carnotaurus! I loved how it tied in with how Diego dies.
When you think about it, the carnotaurus in TLW novel is so much different than what it’s real life counterpart was found out to be later on. The carnivore that was depicted in the novel as camouflaging with it’s environment was found out to be an animal built for speed...
So Ive read the books but somehow your voice and small sound effects with images make every vidoe Ive watxhed where you go over scenes more scary than me resding them myself.
You should read both Jurassic Park novels for audiobooks . Your voice makes the plot move even better, and with Michael Crichton's plot movement with your voice would be A-MA-ZING (I hope that didnt sound weird, I just wanna tell u that ur reading is really really good and interesting)
I wish the movies would of have the same terrifying moments as the novels. It takes an amazing author to put you into a situation deeper than a film can.

I've always assumed Richard Levine was attacked by a Velociraptor as a foot with a giant middle toe is mentioned when Diego is pulled in to the jungle.
The lost world Jurassic Park Novel looks great but I love how Micheal Crichton is the best author who made these novels of Jurassic Park really dark scenes in these books and can you imagine in your head while your reading 📖 seeing the most dark scenes and disturbing how the novel is not for Kids but for adults That why I love JP movies and the two novels .
Personally, I would love a call back to this scene in the next movie. Kinda going off of what you had suggested in another video, where the Carno and Allosaurs show themselves to be more dangerous to people due to their smaller size. Maybe it's a pair of hikers in the Sierra Nevadas who stop to admire a Compy, or even just photograph a chipmunk or flower, that get attacked. But I think it would be a great opening scene to illustrate the ramifications of introducing these monstrous and genetically-modified predators into a world of human beings who believe themselves as being beyond reproach.

This part is terrifying. But, the adrenaline of this one of the novel is amazing.

Your readings from the novel are VERY effective. Chilling. Keeps me awake even if I was recently tired. Makes me both more interested in the novels, and ... a bit less willing to read them, for fear of finding excerpts that are too much for my psyche.
I like this part. It wasn't too in depth or too vague. I feel like this scene was adapted in JW when the I-Rex was hiding from the soldiers.

I've read the lost world novel off and on over the last 18 years, and I always assumed it was the raptors that grabbed Diego and attacked Levine. I never put two and two together until I saw your video on the history of the Carnotaurus in the JP franchise.

The fact that the Carnotaurus was so stealthy when it attack the paleontologist reminds me why I was spooked about the Carnotaurus in the Disney movie dinosaurs and why in general I really used to be terrified of these guys when I was a kid over something like the T-Rex.
For me, my favorite reveal in the franchise (Even tho it isn't a Dinosaur), is without a shadow of a doubt, Dominion's Dimetrodon!
I seriously never thought we'd get to see that thing ever show up in the films, but when Grant waved that torch in front of him as he reached the top of the ladder only to reveal the greatest jumpscare of that film in Dimetrodon...

Great reading man! I listened to the William Roberts version but I really like your version. The audio in the background makes a huge difference and I like how you say foliage not folage.

I finally finished the first one yesterday and while science (especially paleontology)isn't my specialty, you were absolutely right about the first one and it made very interesting reading. It scared me way more than the movie did when I was a kid but I love both the novel and the movie. I'm hoping to start the second book today and I can't wait 😁

Omg so I just finished listening to the audio book to jurassic park, and the whole time all I could think about is how much better I would have enjoyed the experience if it was you reading it! Have you ever thought about doing that, this video is another great example of how much you truly bring it to life, even though I do think the sound effects and pictures do help😂😂
I think I remember finding a carnotaurus in ingen’s field guide and it stated that they had a camouflaging ability. I may be wrong and it might not be official but if it is then it’s cannon that the carnos do have this ability. But maybe it was for the old generation of carnos on Sorna and not the new nublar ones as they need to be seen by the guests. It would be cool if they still retained that ability though. Would be thrilling to see them implement it in the final movie.

I remember thinking at first Diego was killed by a Raptor but then reading that AMAZING passage later with Thorne and the two Carnotaurus! I loved how it tied in with how Diego dies.

When you think about it, the carnotaurus in TLW novel is so much different than what it’s real life counterpart was found out to be later on.
The carnivore that was depicted in the novel as camouflaging with it’s environment was found out to be an animal built for speed...

You should read both Jurassic Park novels for audiobooks . Your voice makes the plot move even better, and with Michael Crichton's plot movement with your voice would be A-MA-ZING

I wish the movies would of have the same terrifying moments as the novels. It takes an amazing author to put you into a situation deeper than a film can.

Disney used the same idea in Dinosaur with the Carno's stalking 2 others. But they didnt have camoflauge, obviously. Also, love the video. The carnotaurus has always been my favorite.

The lost world Jurassic Park Novel looks great but I love how Micheal Crichton is the best author who made these novels of Jurassic Park really dark scenes in these books and can you imagine in your head while your reading 📖 seeing the most dark scenes and disturbing how the novel is not for Kids but for adults
That why I love JP movies and the two novels .
Personally, I would love a call back to this scene in the next movie. Kinda going off of what you had suggested in another video, where the Carno and Allosaurs show themselves to be more dangerous to people due to their smaller size. Maybe it's a pair of hikers in the Sierra Nevadas who stop to admire a Compy, or even just photograph a chipmunk or flower, that get attacked. But I think it would be a great opening scene to illustrate the ramifications of introducing these monstrous and genetically-modified predators into a world of human beings who believe themselves as being beyond reproach.
