      I can see a lot of situations with the two returners playing off each other, like one guy being a blocker or a lateral option. I’m all for this. And if I’m not mistaken there’s now a penalty for kickoffs that go into the end zone like kickoffs that go out of bounds?

    I agree with the poster who said there will be like 20 TD returns the first week. Though that may be an exaggeration, I would think there would be a ton of them. I see this in comparison to a running back breaking through the line on a short yardage play. If he does, he's gone. There's nobody there to make a play on him because everyone is lined up at the line of scrimmage. Now that doesn't happen very often of course. But I can see that happening more now with this alignment because the return team can setup their blocking a bit longer. It looks like, if everyone makes their block correctly for a few seconds and maybe the returner can break one tackle, he'll be gone. Another way to look at it, those returns we used to see where the returner would get to his own 40-45 yard line or so? Those will all be touchdowns now because there won't be anyone to make the tackle at the 40. So is that good? I think it will be joke. Maybe I'll be wrong about this happening. I hope I am.

      make it make sense to me

    • @MrThenonchosenone
      @MrThenonchosenone 5 месяцев назад +6

      It's not that football fans are complaining about having more football to watch. It's NFL fans tired of them blowing smoke up their ass. The NFL claims the reason they changed the kicking rules and banned hip drop tackles is, because they're too dangerous and they care about player safety so they had to make changes. If they really care about player safety then why haven't they banned turf which has a 28% higher injury rate than grass? Why haven't they banned Thursday and international games, which have a 21% higher injury rate. Why are they trying to play 20 regular season games, which will cause more injuries. The reality is they're trying to increase scoring by making tackling illegal and making the kickoffs so easy Simone Biles could score a touchdown. The NBA did the same thing by making every defensive play a foul, so scores now are 142-137 because nobody plays defense. Guess what the NBA viewership went down 30% after they made those changes. The same thing will happen to the NFL. Fans don't care about score they want to see a good offensive and defensive battle, not having defensive players playing with one hand tied behind their back. The most popular sport in the world is soccer and the most common score is 1-0. The MLB last year finally listened to the fans and started using pitching clocks so pitchers can't sent on the mound for 5 minutes scratching his balls and games lasting 5 hours. The 2023 season saw a 10% increase in viewers and ticket sales. It's not hard to listen to the fans and players when making decisions, but their ego doesn't allow them to do that. They have a bunch of nerds from Princeton that have never played football making rules decisions, because they created an algorithm that says this is a good decision.

    One thing I'm unsure of right now: Can the non-receiving players move around within their setup zones during the kick? I mean, as long as they stay inside their respective zones? Also, if they can't, can they move around UNTIL the ball is actually kicked? Just spitballing here, if these players must remain mostly stationary, I could see some REAL interesting tactical special teams plays blossoming from this.

      @@a.j.bartley8449 For example, I could see the kicking team lining up with a gap somewhere, then kicking a SCREAMER, about head-high, into the landing zone. Because the touchback for a ball touching in the landing zone is the 20, the receiving pretty much HAS to field it vs giving up the free yardage. But once it hits the ground, who knows where that sucker's gonna go?
      I mean, kick it soccer-style most of the time, then some LB who kicked in high school gets out there and toes it while the ball's flat on the tee!
      First thing I'd do, RIGHT NOW, is call Belichick and ask him for 2-3 hours of his time one day. Dude was always into special-teams, and would pull some quirky ST stuff every now and then. No doubt he'll have some choice ideas.

    My biggest complaint- what will happen to the fair catch free kick? Is it now only an option for a fourth quarter onside kick? Half joking- one of the beautiful things about the game was how everything was fundamentally four or so “types” of plays- scrimmage, free kick, place kick, try for extra point(s)… maybe I’m missing something. There are too many overtweaked set-piece plays now where a team has to declare what they are attempting beforehand, you can’t do this, you can’t do that, only in the fourth quarter this, etc. The professional game is becoming unrecognizable from the playground game, and I think that is bad for the sport in the long run.

    I almost never see guys get hurt on kick returns. People who wanna blame the NFL for these rule changes should really realize that its not the NFL's doing. It's the players, agents, and lawyers who are going after the NFL and suing them after they get injured just to get some money out of the deal. They know the risks and willingly signed up for it and got paid a shit pile of money to do so. Its those people who are forcing the NFL to make these lame ass changes.

  • @somethingyouhave

    Really going to continue to be a touchback 90% of the time like it is now unless the move the kickoff spot back. It’s a useless play. They’ve just now eliminated the chance of a surprise onside kick. This just tells all the players on kickoff to sit around. It’ll be effectively a dead ball play most of the time.

    Have the NFL answer this question; then what? These NFL kickoff rule changes sissify the league make the NFL the National Sissy League (NSL) and are a camel's nose under the tent, meaning more to come. Like no more tackles just pulling flags from opposing player carrying the ball (flag football like in grade school), no more heavy blocks at the line of scrimmage with players just standing up to get in the way but no touching. And finally, once all of that is in place, women have to be allowed to play all positions in NSL football to completely 'woke' the sport.

  • @jharp08

    Wait how would this stop touchbacks if the ball is kicked to the endzone

    • @chaosknight73
      @chaosknight73 5 месяцев назад

      It won't. BUT the kicking team is encouraged to keep it in the landing zone. If the ball is downed in the landing zone, the spot will be on the 20. If the ball is downed in the endzone, it will be spotted on the 30.

    • @oubrioko
      @oubrioko 5 месяцев назад

      It doesn't _stop_ touchbacks, it just makes them slightly more costly for the kicking team: 30 yard line rather than the 25. The new rules introduce some strategy options into kickoffs and returns by special teams coordinators. Lull a team to sleep with several touchbacks, and then kickoff to the 15-yard line, while organizing blockers to clear a path for gunners, etc.

    • @MrThenonchosenone
      @MrThenonchosenone 5 месяцев назад +1

      Until they realize after the first week that the average kick return will get out to the 45 yard line like it did in the XFL. Teams will just kick it into the endzone lol.

      you just have to declare it first which eliminates "surprise onside kicks", but honestly that never really happened anyway... the onside would take place from the same spot as usual, except they changed the 5x5 formation rule, so you're now again allowed to load one side with 6 guys, theoretically increasing the possibility of a recovery

    Might as well just eliminate the kickoff and put the ball on the other teams 25 yard line if safety is the REAL reason. Look, football is a physical sport and the more you try and make the sport "safer" the more you are unintentionally making football not football.

      yeah why not just cancel football altogether and never play another game if they care so much about safety?? lol get a grip, yes it's a physical sport but this rule change is to ENCOURAGE MORE RETURNS and encourage more action in special teams play, but it seems the only thing "fans" love more than football is whining about how they hate everything football does lol i don't get it.... this rule is LITERALLY making football more about football, unless ceremonial kickoffs for touchbacks were a big deal to you?
