This is gonna be awesome and opens up so many possibilities!! U can have a speed team, a big team etc. I don't think they will even use the kicker except in certain situations. I'd find a CB or linebacker who can kick. Hang time doesn't matter.
So basically Devin Hester will be the greatest kickoff returner of all time (or at least the greatest pre-2024) with no chance of anyone catching him (unless the league goes back to the old rule). Unless I am missing something, there is no way someone can logically compare stats and records under this rule with the stats and records of the old rule.
I would think that kickers will master the line drive un-returnable kick that lands in the landing zone and basically impossible to return. It will carry through the end zone and come out to the 20. So the offense will always start at the 20 which I think definitely benefits the defense.
I’d just consider kicking through the end zone. If my team can’t stop a 65 yard drive, I got a bigger problem. But one hole and it’s one on one with kicker and returner…I wouldn’t want to risk that if I’m the kicking team. I’m sure analytics will reveal the best way to do this, but my initial thoughts would be prevent the return.
I like your thought process David. Weighing excercise science and injury risk vs a 10 or so yards of field position. Hope you check out my other videos!
It looks like this will eliminate (or reduce) the constant penalties at kickoffs. Most of them happen due to the defenders coming in too fast and fouling on the tackle or block. I was tired of that. If the kickers on the field the flags come out. Anything to reduce the constant penalty flags being thrown.
every NFL rule change since Roger Goodell and Troy Vincent were hired has been a disaster for pro football.Thank God for the NHL where the players still decide the outcome of the contest and not some totally stupid rule change;EX:illegal contact or def holding=automatic first down,Leaping or Leverage, how about the old "body weight"striking the QB basically anywhere but the torso?Defensive backs can't submarine a blocker to make a tackle etc.etc.
I've heard one comment from Mike Florio that having everybody stay at the same places after a penalty, may lead to more roughing the kicker calls because there's little disincentive for NOT hitting the kicker. We'll see.
This is going to be just like the MLB pitch clock, it will be objectively better but people will still find a way to nitpick and complain for at least the first season
I like it. There's a lot of strategy. Do you want a burner for a returner or a running back with short area quickness? Do you run end arounds or use cutback lanes? It's interesting.
It IS better than all touchbacks, but it's funky, I think with getting the ball on the 20, or 35, or 40.....There's just too much going on. If the problem was kickers are just too strong and esily kick it out of the endzone, well I think they just should have moved the kicker back, the way it was in the early 70's. BUT......That doesnt address the high speed collisions, and thats what this is really all about. I just worry about with the rule that with the kickoff team being stationed so far downfield and not being allowed to move until the returner catches the ball, there will be way too many runbacks. In future seasons we may see the kicking teams defenders a bit more spread out, instead of being in a perfect line, so theres more lines of defense against a runback. So they still wont be allowed to move until the returner catches the ball, but they will be in better position once the returner breaks that first line of defense, Yep, my way is better
I mean, you hate to see change, but I played football from ages 7 till 22 years old, and kickoff and kickoff returns were the most brutal portions of the game. I got at least 2 concussions on special teams myself and In high school I was a kick off return blocker, and my job was too count to the third guy to the left and that’s who I hit. One game, this kid was flying down the field, thinking he was untouched for an easy tackle, and I absolutely obliterated him. He had to be carted off the field. And I believe I gave him minor brain damage. As much as we hate to see the old kickoffs go, cause it’s apart of history. As big, strong and fast as footballs players have gotten, we needed a safer alternative to protect them.
The school that I was playing for cut my scholarship money down, because they needed the extra funds for players they were bringing in, so after that I quit football. Went back home to Idaho, played rugby for Boise State, tore my Achilles tendon, the practice before my opening match against the Utah Utes. Pretty much stopped all sports after that. 15 years of putting my body through hell and trying to get something out of it, to come up empty handed.
Thanks for a more objective take on this. I initially watched a video that claimed this rule would kill the game, so I came into tis with some skepticism, but there are always two sides to a story. I especially like the fact that you, having played the game, support rules that minimize injury. I wonder how many of the guys who think the safety rules re for sissies actually played. I never played, but I know something about good business practices, and the safety rules make sense from an economic standpoint. Even if I were a greedy, heartless team owner who only cared about making money and not about my players' well-being, I would still support rules that enhanced player safety and minimized injuries. An injured player still draws a salary. Every game that player misses will cost me money. And if it's a key player, his absence impacts the overall quality of my team, which means less chances of winning, which means I will make less money. So even if we throw basic human decency out the window, player safety makes sense from an economic standpoint.
Hey Mike! Thanks for comment. I strive to be as objective as possible. Granted, I didn't play at the NFL level, I HATED kickoff collisions. I hope you check out my other videos!
So… basically teams only need a punter to drop kick the kickoff? Or have they dropped the drop kick kickoffs for this year as well? Think I’d try a couple line drives. Nail it just over the lines heads, drop it squibbing around inside the 10 with backspin. No sense in delaying the inevitable… let’s get on with it :) make the catch tougher than a typical kickoff and let’s see em go at it from there. :) gunna need a few soccer/rugby players I think.
My excellent style is the kicker is on the sideline ,ball placed at their 25 &teams sideline the ball kicked and bounces 2 Xs then goes out on opposite sideline they start there or it's run back if the kicker can make a field goal it's worth 1 pt & other team gets ball at 30
It's so stupid. Treat kickoffs like a 4th and 10 at your own 40. Allow teams to punt or go for it. You aren't allowed to kick the ball out of bounds just like traditional kickoffs. Maybe that's too simple idk
9:30 - _OMG!😲..._ I _LEGITIMATELY JUST NOTICED_ that you've been sitting in the bottom left-hand corner of the video this _ENTIRE TIME!!!_ hahaha😆 How the hell did I _NOT_ even notice you that you were there until the video had practically finished?...uhhmmm, idk🤷
Because Special teams has always been an integral part of pro football. If kickoffs were to be eliminated the offense should get the ball at the 15 yardline,NOT the 25. The Offensive side of the ball can earn the paychecks.
You stated that balls kicked into the landing zone must be returned, but you also stated that if a ball is kicked into the landing zone and then continues into the end zone it's a touchback to the 20. This is confusing.
This new rule has ruined the National Football League! The owners turned this league into the UFL! They ruined the sport of football! I don't even watch the UFL because of this kickoff rule because it ruins one of the dimensions of the game itself. They're three dimensions to football defense, offense, and special teams. Altering the kicking game changes one of the dimensions to the game, if it isn't broke, why are you trying to fix it.
The NFL should just get it over with and do away with the kick off all together. Just place the ball on the 25-yard line and be done with it. This new rule looks ridiculous, and it's embarrassing.

Does dude really laugh like that? 😂
Yes John!
He’s special I’m pretty sure. Had to watch in 1.5 speed too
Anything is better than a touchback.
Facts. So boring
I would think that kickers will master the line drive un-returnable kick that lands in the landing zone and basically impossible to return. It will carry through the end zone and come out to the 20. So the offense will always start at the 20 which I think definitely benefits the defense.
This actually increase value for TEs, 2nd String OL, FBs and RBs.... Essentially this is basic running plays.
Notice that almost all first round picks were offensive players. Even defensive coaches seeing handwriting on the wall
Hmmm elaborate please
With new kickoff and hip tackle rule, defense will be even more handicaped. Best to focus primarily on offense to take advantage
@@wes2262 I think it was just a fairly weak defensive draft class and many of the teams in the Top 15 had offensive holes.
I wasn’t sure about this but things are about to get interesting. I think it’s gonna work.
It’s slightly becoming more entertaining
Dude , your laugh ~ I just can’t
I like this a lot, actually. It was boring watching the ball fly out of bounds 97% of the time.
⁉️ So... how will the 9nside kicks work...the same as the old way...???
Yes for me. Because now special teams will have a bigger mission, can actually be creative and it is safer for all the players.
True Scott. I hope you check out other videos
Bro, calling the landing zone the redzone while it’s blue and the endzone in red does not make this any easier to follow 😂
I'll hold your hand next time to make it easier
Why not just take off the pads and give them all specific instructions to not hurt anyone.
Makes you think
Just make it flag football
Why?
i think you will see a TON of kickoff return TDs this year. Once a guy breaks through that first line, it's over.
Would be fun!
every NFL rule change since Roger Goodell and Troy Vincent were hired has been a disaster for pro football.Thank God for the NHL where the players still decide the outcome of the contest and not some totally stupid rule change;EX:illegal contact or def holding=automatic first down,Leaping or Leverage, how about the old "body weight"striking the QB basically anywhere but the torso?Defensive backs can't submarine a blocker to make a tackle etc.etc.
So basically, you miss the old days?
The kickoff is where boys are separated from the men, not a patty cake game
I've heard one comment from Mike Florio that having everybody stay at the same places after a penalty, may lead to more roughing the kicker calls because there's little disincentive for NOT hitting the kicker. We'll see.
Florio is in my latest video - ruclips.net/video/rWLpicdTk84/видео.html
This is going to be just like the MLB pitch clock, it will be objectively better but people will still find a way to nitpick and complain for at least the first season
Agreed. Pitch clock was incredible
Where did you play ball?
The Chargers when they were still in San Diego
lol nice@@PowerHourNFL
I like it. There's a lot of strategy. Do you want a burner for a returner or a running back with short area quickness? Do you run end arounds or use cutback lanes? It's interesting.
They are just gonna kick in into the endzone anyhow.
What happens if the ball lands inside the end zone? It
Why not have the kicker on the 20 yd line? Why not place the kicking team on the 50 yd line? This would result is GREATER excitement.
Why did you quit playing?
Anyone who doubts this rule look up the 2020 kick return St. Louis had against the Guardians in XFL
The NFL is over 100 years old and still trying to figure out the rules. ;)
It’s wild but I like having a league open to change
So… basically teams only need a punter to drop kick the kickoff? Or have they dropped the drop kick kickoffs for this year as well?
Think I’d try a couple line drives. Nail it just over the lines heads, drop it squibbing around inside the 10 with backspin. No sense in delaying the inevitable… let’s get on with it :) make the catch tougher than a typical kickoff and let’s see em go at it from there. :) gunna need a few soccer/rugby players I think.
Why can’t we just completely get rid of kickoffs.
Ok what’s your solution if this were to happen?
I love the changes….. anything to stop all the touchbacks!!
I love the changes too. I hope they keep changing more until no one watches
Telling the official you’re doing an onside is a dumb rule.
I like this rule. I think it has the potential for some exciting games.
Thanks for watching! I hope you check out other videos
My excellent style is the kicker is on the sideline ,ball placed at their 25 &teams sideline the ball kicked and bounces 2 Xs then goes out on opposite sideline they start there or it's run back if the kicker can make a field goal it's worth 1 pt & other team gets ball at 30
This is a lot to process
If you think this is bad, just wait until the refs try and figure out when to call an illegal hip drop tackle!!!!
Next rule will be no more tackling and give them all flags. NFL was already sucking, now it totally sucks.
I know you can use a drop kick in football can you use it for kick off like in rugby ?
It's so stupid. Treat kickoffs like a 4th and 10 at your own 40. Allow teams to punt or go for it. You aren't allowed to kick the ball out of bounds just like traditional kickoffs. Maybe that's too simple idk
put the rb back there so he can read those holes
I’d love to see it
Kickoff and Xtra points are dead and have been for many years. This breathes life into them
9:30 - _OMG!😲..._ I _LEGITIMATELY JUST NOTICED_ that you've been sitting in the bottom left-hand corner of the video this _ENTIRE TIME!!!_ hahaha😆
How the hell did I _NOT_ even notice you that you were there until the video had practically finished?...uhhmmm, idk🤷
I am the darkness *Bane Voice*
We need fewer concussions! *Proceeds to add a 17th game*
18 on the way
Why not just set the ball on the 25 yard line if they're serious about reducing concussions?!?
Because Special teams has always been an integral part of pro football. If kickoffs were to be eliminated the offense should get the ball at the 15 yardline,NOT the 25. The Offensive side of the ball can earn the paychecks.
Whatever it takes to keep the kickoff
It is what it is
You stated that balls kicked into the landing zone must be returned, but you also stated that if a ball is kicked into the landing zone and then continues into the end zone it's a touchback to the 20. This is confusing.
Huh?
I can see a lot of pop up onside kicks
No doubt. Sky kicks are valuable
8:00 I miss the flashbulbs too. Damn iPhones...
I guess you can call this is a….
“Flash” from the past
Funny enough that was the last time I owned any apple products. Android ever since
The NFL should just get it over with and do away with the kick off all together. Just place the ball on the 25-yard line and be done with it. This new rule looks ridiculous, and it's embarrassing.
