People with high self esteem tend to never experience schadenfreude unless it involves a sense of justice, so a good amount of people will never feel schadenfreude unless it's seeing someone "getting what they deserve". These people are then going to assume that that's what the word means.
The German history of the concept also (seemingly) does involve justice, which is another reason why people will argue about it even if it technically doesn't apply to the english version.

For the last part about flak; Allied and enemy bombers would usually fly as high as they could to avoid being shot at. It also helped in other ways like attempting to avoid detection, it increased range and engine performance, and if you were lucky it made enemy fighters harder to get up to you (depending on the fighter). That said, the enemy would also have flak cannons. They're artillery guns (the most famous is the German Flak-88) that use a special fuse that you can set so that it explodes at a certain altitude or after a certain amount of time. So if the Germans knew that the allied bombers would be around a certain altitude they'd set the fuses for that altitude, aim at the fuckers, and pray that one of the many thousands of rounds fired in the air hit some planes. The bombers flew in fairly tight formations. This was so that they could protect each other from enemy fighters with overlapping fields of fire using their AA guns and turrets, but also because a formation of bombers was more likely to actually hit their target on the ground. Usually there would be a bombardier on board the lead aircraft, and his job would be to determine when to release the bombs. On his command he and every other bombers would release their full payload. This is where we get the term carpet bomb, since the bombs falling would have explosions that rolled down the line like laying carpet. You'd think that would be devastating to the target, but sadly because the technology and physical limitations in the aircraft, munitions, and aiming sights, whole bombing formations would very often miss their intended target altogether. This is even more shocking when you realize that most of these targets weren't just a small building or block, they were massive industrial districts of many large cities.
So yeah ... WW2 bombing was pretty hit and miss. Literally.
Oh, and one last thing about flak. In order to increase the odds of hitting aircraft, the artillery shells weren't just normal high explosives. They were shrapnel based burst rounds, made to pepper whatever was in the area with high velocity shrapnel. Think of a massive grenade shot from a cannon and that's what flak is.

The invention of "radar",which was used in WW2, gave the allies a huge advantage in air defense since they had an early warning system allowing them to scramble their fighters and shoot down bombers before the bombers had reached their targets.
Major advantage in the battle for Britain! Despite having fewer planes, the Dowding system saved and was one of the turning points in WW2! if Britain was defeated so early, who knows if America would even join the European conflict and Germany could concentrate all of their troops on the eastern front! As far as the anti-air question at the end, in WW2 they use flak which is a cannon or set of cannons that shot explosive shells then were set to explode at the preset height. The shrapnel or "flak" that was created would shred bombers and often the crew inside. It's important to note that flak is extremely inaccurate, I can't remember the ratio exactly but I think the US had a rate of like 16.000-8,500 rounds to down a single bomber

One German agrees with him and suddenly he feels sure of himself. Very funny to see. Even within one people who share a language you'll find different groups with different definitions of words, one individual giving you their view doesn't necessarily mean much.
So, as an individual who also happens to be German, let me chime in. Schadenfreude is basically about laughing about someone else's misfortune, no karma involved. What I think happened is that most people don't like to laugh or at least admit to laughing about someone's misfortune for no reason. So many people adjusted the meaning to include some kinda justification e.g. someone deserves to get hurt and then does.
The original meaning does not discriminate based on "deservedness". You might say it's an assholish thing to do but I don't see how that is an issue. Assholish behaviours deserve words of their own so you can more easily recognise and name them. I don't know what American's are like but the basic form of Schadenfreude isn't even that rare of a thing to see depending on who you spend your time around. Call it lack of empathy but the more people are emotionally removed from another person, the more likely some of them are to have a sense of "better them than me" or "what a sucker/dumbass" about others' misfortunes.
Edit: looking it up it seems an essential part of this feeling is you not liking the other person, possibly but not necessarily with the addition of them having done something that goes against you in a way that makes misfortune happening to them appear like higher justice.
Flak guns would up to a height and then explode releasing shrapnel. Later in the war the allies had flak that would explode when close enough by using radar. Those radar flak rounds weren’t guided.
