My thoughts exactly. Capital ships clearly wouldn't be able to land on the smaller platforms. I suppose if you can build large capital ships it would make sense for them not to be able to land on planets and instead require a smaller craft for landing. That would be quite cool.

@@StateOfMind63 more often than not in sci-fi, capital ships don’t land at all. In fact, they never even come close to the atmosphere. The sheer force you need to support these behemoths against gravity is… realistically unachieveable. Instead, capital ships are basically a mobile base of operations/space port - they warp into a system, and then many, many small vessels dock with them. Say you have a giant battleship - it basically acts as a giant weapons platform with dozens of smaller fighters docked onto it. Or, a trading ship would warp into a port, only to be unloaded by smaller ships, their cargo spread to the sellers (this is how real ocean based cargo ships and battle ships work too of course, the ship docks in the port, and many many smaller trucks bring the cargo to where its needed to be)

My concern is not about making a ship massive, though that would be super cool and all, but rather worried about how functional each room or modual the ship has. For example, building a massive base in Minecraft often has a TON of wasted space that is not acutally usable unless you pile chests in the room. I am talking about the room doing something that makes the ship function or if the room gives some sort of bonus for traveling, etc.

Like an orbital space station. You could have external landing pads fitted with electromagnets, which would activate on the initial landing, to keep it in place while the docking process is completed - you could have guards posted in a command centre who would demand an entry code before docking is authorised, and if entry is denied you could have autoturrets pop up and gently tell them to fuck off - the possibilities could be endless..

I think ship customization will be limited by reactor output not size. Power allocation is a big component to how ships work in Starfield so it would make sense. As far as we know we can only have one reactor per ship with a set power limit. The reactors will probably be the most expensive items in the game as far as class and power output some will probably be worth more than an entire ship. Another factor could be the size of the landing port. My hope is their is no limit but restrictions like you reach a size where the only place you can dock the ship is the space yards making it only able to orbit planets. This would mean you can have smaller ship docked inside for landing or defenses. I also hope allies can fly in smaller ships or even take over the main ship during combat. Personally I'm going to try and make a bounty hunter ship or a smugglers

    • @virtuella

That's what modders are for. To break the limitations. In the start I will be playing without mods and go as long as I can without mods, but if there are things that annoy me, and modders have a solution for that, I will download those mods. In no man's sky the small backpack and spaceship inventories annoyed me, so those were some of the first mods I downloaded.
I prefer fun over reality when playing, and constant inventory management is not fun in my book, so near Unlimited inventory mods are probably some of the first I download as well in SF.

One cool thing they could do, is have ground-based ship yards, where you can build a ship up to some standard port size. Then also have separate orbital ship yards, where you can customize/build a ship larger than can fit in a planet-side port.
Once you build a ship larger than the standard port size, that ship must remain in space, acting as a flagship. You’d need to either already have other smaller ships you can use for landing, or go out and buy/steal one before you could again land on a planet.
Or perhaps one of the building blocks we could put on our ship could be a shuttle bay… then our landing/takeoff animation just uses a shuttle taking us to/from our ship, instead of our ship itself.

With the creation kit, I think it is safe to say that ships can also be constructed using the same tools as in-game ship building. But in the kit, there likely won't be any size limnits. The question I have isn't so much as how big ships can be in the game. The question for me is how big can they be and still be flyable.
We're essentially moving large, high-poly 3D modules hooked together at connection points within map. And that's got to involve a massive amount of processing power. The bigger the ship, the more modules involved. It stands to reason that ships of a particular size would become problematice for flight processing, and may stay more or less stationary in the space environment. This will allow the large ships to maintain a physical presence, but not be active like smaller ships. Weapon systems on them would still work, tho. And they would likely be able to engage grav drives to move between star systems. So if we can actually control one of these ships, it won't be locked to a single star system.
Simulating movement through deep space may be possible by engaging thruster animations, and having the stars seem to move. The ship would still be stationary, but the illusion of movement could be employed.
I'm only speculating. If we can actually fly large scale ships, like that battle cruiser, it would be impressive to say the least. We'll know soon enough.

I don't know how big the crew numbers would be, but maybe with some stealth shenanigans we could take them out and gain control of it. Perhaps bounty hunters would come after us for such an act. Those ships on the other side do line up with the docking ports (you can see the freighter docked at one, and an open one next to it) on the other side.

I made a ship that resembles the millennium falcon from Star Wars but instead of a cockpit on the side, I put one right in the middle.
Best build I have made yet. It’s quite large, medium mobility, high firepower and lots of cargo space.
My next build I’m thinking of a light cruiser built if I can find a Star yard that has the modules I need.
I have become quite good at making credits especially after learning how to disable and dock to enemy ships. I’ll stock up on contraband and head to the wolf system where I sell it all in bulk. Find the den in the wolf system. Won’t get scanned and can dock there and sell everything including ships you have captured, but need to register them first to sell them.
I recommend upping the commerce skill so you get profit from selling and discounts for buying.
    Your welcome. 😂
Also you can join crimson fleet, become a pirate and sell everything at their base called the key. But I’m a privateer doing good deeds so I didn’t join, that’s for my next play through. 😊

It would be so cool that while out in space you investigate a distress call from an unknown planet. The terror starts when you and the crew encounter a nest of eggs inside an abandon facility. You take it back to your ship for study or even to sell it. Later an organism from inside the egg leaps out and attaches itself to one of the crew, causing him to fall into a coma. It burst out of him and grows larger and you and your crew must hunt it down and kill it.

2:40 This picture raises so many questions. Like is weapon angles/collision a thing? Because if yes, the back cannon could really shoot through the ship cargo box :D
Can we find different weapon types that would fit different ships? These weapons are clearly too big for small ships, but is their size generated based on ship, or is it the atribute of weapon itself.
I was thinking that weapon quality will be determined by their level or maybe their rarity, but S size weapons for fighters and XXL size weapons for large ships both with different stats may actually be a thing.

    • @trickyleblanc
      @trickyleblanc Год назад

This was something I was wondering as well at the exact same time stamp. You can see the cannon placed directly behind those cargo containers will 100% clip through those boxes when shooting in certain angles. Or will it actually have some sort of "CANNON OBSTRUCTED" warning when shooting, effectively disabling the weapons until you get a clear shot? Let's be honest, I'm thinking the shots will just clip through the containers, which in turn will make me think more in depth about the ships I build now to make it more immersive.

For some context, a 200M long ship would 45M longer than the Arleigh Burke Class Destroyers of the U.S. Navy, which clock in at 155M. Those ships house a crew of about 300 - 320. Which coincidentally, is the same length of the Normandy from Mass Effect.

    • @FN1980a

Some thoughts: You'll never be able to build a ship bigger than the landing pads in the game unless there are special large landing/docking areas for oversized freighter class ships
The freighter shown in the video is most likely a unique one owned by one of the military factions that the player can visit and not one you can build.

@@benhoff1779 yeah, that's the only way it would work really. One has to wonder how the loading screens going from pilot seat, to capital ship interior, to smaller ship interior, to pilot seat, to planet would actually feel though. If I had to jump through all those transitions flying my freighter in no man's sky just to get out In my ship and go exploring id probbaly feel less inclined to take my freighter around everywhere.
This is why most devs realize loading screens in space exploration games just kinda pull you out of the experience and spend time to cleverly disguise them if it's required.

    • @TheXboxSux
      @TheXboxSux Год назад +1

@@benhoff1779 Right, but fast travel doesn't sound very fun in a space exploration game imho. Sounds like a gamey arcade title with no risk or reward. The heck is the point of even having a ship? Might as well just make space travel a cutscene too.
This is the problem with BGS. They care too much about what the casual audience thinks that they don't take risks and so us modders have to go in and adjust everything, only to find out the public loves the tweaks more than the vanilla experience.
I just can't stand sloppy gameplay and lazy mechanics in such an "ambitious" title in 2023. At least no mans sky had an immersive way of introducing fast travel options.

4:24 I suspect 46m is telling you the actual length of the ship in that dimension, as is the other axis. 46m would be an odd number to mark out on the grid without either marking every single metre, or round increments. It would also be strange to measure 46m from mid ship / grid to the back and make you mentally double it.
As you spin the view, the markers might switch to the nearest parts of the axis lines.

I would say the size we will be able to go may be quite big, but wont go into that massive territory.
