I watched The Master recently just to absorb Joaquin Phoenix's incredible acting. He's one of those actors that has the incredible ability to act externally and internally. So, I'm confident Phoenix's rendition will be memorable and awesome. Would love to see a video on King of Comedy. Arguably Scorsese's most underrated film. And, it'd be relevant to the release of the Joker, too. Loving this channel, thanks!

Jared Leto was such crap as Joker, I don't think I can be friends with anyone who believes that he was a good Joker :P This isn't even about opinions, some movies and some performances are just factually bad, either poor directing, poor editing, poor writing. In terms of actor performances these can be measured in quality and not just in taste. So for example, in terms of acting quality as in what you saw on screen - Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix all did top performances. I am talking Oscar worthy performances by all three of them this is just a fact. Their body language, the depth they put to every single movement. No second on screen is wasted, everything has a purpose from tiny gestures that many audiences will have missed in their consciousness but that their subconscious will have picked up on to the bigger gestures that everyone will have noticed. Such as that proud look on Heath's face when the Joker successfully makes the pencil vanish. The more subtle gestures such as when Heath breaks into Bruce's fundraiser and is about to tell a story about his alcoholic father and before doing so he takes a glass of champagne from one of the guests casually tosses out the whole contents of the glass and then takes a sip of air from said glass. A small gesture done so perfectly that I am willing to bet most audiences didn't even notice this but their subconscious certainly did and it establishes for the audience the type of personality of the Joker and if you noticed this scene you realise the Joker doesn't like alcohol and while his story about the scars always change it also shows that parts of the story are true. The alcoholic (step)father who beat the Joker when he was a kid - this part of the story is thus true. So these kind of stuff, even if you for example, personally don't like Nolan's Batman or Heath's interpretation of Joker - the acting quality is there. This is just a fact that can be measured in how the actor is able to perform each frame on the film perfectly. Take any moment with the joker, pause it and the body language, facial expressions, eyes - all perfect. That is only achieved by the best actors in Hollywood. Jared Leto just falls short in all these regards, while I am sure people enjoyed his interpretation of the Joker - the acting quality just wasn't there. It was sloppy and forced and it was heavily reliant on the make-up. Take off his fake teeth and the overly heavy make-up he was wearing and you just have an awkward Jared Leto staring at you. There is no acting quality to speak of, the body language was that of Jared Leto, the eye expressions were that of Jared Leto. There was nothing on screen that made you see anything but Jared Leto in heavy make-up. If you watch Phoenix, Ledger or Nicholson's Joker you often can forget there is an actor behind that character as you see the Joker in that moment and not the actor. While for Joaquin it was arguably even harder as the bulk of the film he was without make-up and prosthetics and the entire film was reliant on his performance.
I really admire that part of Ledger's method. To wait until he was almost desperate to act again. To feel *hungry to perform,* to *need* to get in front of a camera and express himself. One of those few performances that come along every few years that become timeless. Many people didn’t believe he could pull it off and going into it with those expectations and the fact that he’d just died, it left us with questions of what was to come next for him. We would’ve gotten more Joker and many more great roles out of him. His posthumous Oscar is proof of that. I’m not sure if those in the upcoming generations who see it for the first time will experience it the same way, but I know it was one of my top 5 favorite times in a theater opening day.
@@ShumpPulp I remember talking with my friend about it because I'd, at the time, most recently seen him in Knight's Tale, Casanova, and 10 Things I Hate About You. I liked him a lot but I was super curious how it was going to go. Then we both saw/heard the first trailer with his voice in it and lost our collective shit.
3:54 This woman did an amazing job. The Joker's costume was on point and looked both totally believable and just out of place enough, and it would have been so easy to just make it a generic theater costume because that's what we were all expecting back then. I never thought about the 'edgyness' of it, but thinking back I can totally see it.
She did. I admired every stitch of what he wore from the first time I watched. It felt like there was a reason for everything about what he wore and who he was.
I love how Heath respected and admired Jack Nicholson’s take on the joker. He was truly iconic, if it wasn’t for him joker would still be remembered as more comical and campy. Thanks to Tim Burton’s vision, and Nicholson’s performance, it paved the way for a very different approach to play the clown. From Heath, to Leto, to Joaquin. Different interpretations of the clown from very talented actors. Rest In Peace Heath
Grand Guru I agree. I haven’t seen Joker yet, but for me Mark Hammils Joker is THE JOKER. It is almost entirely based on the Nicholson Joker, which is the best interpretation of the COMIC JOKER. And Ledgers Joker is in my opinion the BEST JOKER.
Andrew Goldsmith I agree, I can talk Hamil all day, in fact I think he’s the best, not only voice actor but is up there with the live action. I was just talking live action jokers only. I’m also a huge 1966 batman fan and I feel his joker is as golden as it gets too.
Grand Guru of course. And Cesar Romero set the standard for the Jokers live action ecocentrism. I think Nicholson used Romero’s joker as a critical point of reference cuz let’s be honest, hack Nicholson was just playing himself, but with a dose of Cesar Romero’s cookiness
Andrew Goldsmith I agree, Jack also had to portray a joker back story. Him and Joaquin are the only ones to portray a sort of origin of the joker, but of course Joaquin was more in depth because it was a joker movie lol, but let’s be honest here, I’m sure we can really agree that the best joker of them all is Jared Leto.
Grand Guru also in the comics, Batman made the discovery that there were in fact 3 Jokers. Although as far as I know, there haven’t been any developments in that storyline yet, I think of the 3 jokers like this: Golden/Bronze Age Joker=Nicholson/Hammil (one character) Silver Age Joker=Cesar Romero Modern Age Joker=Ledger I also haven’t seen Joaquin’s yet, but I’m going on Friday.
Heath Ledger's Joker surpasses Nolan's expectation of Joker 🃏 on his mind and as he watch with so much amazement as how Heath deliver that he just let Heath unveil himself as Joker. Nolan becomes an audience of his own film.
Im 23, and im going to make sure even if the generations go on and all the kids growing up now will forget all the media and stuff from our time. I will MAKE SURE this movie is not forgotten solely on the fact of amazing his performance was. This man was truly a gift. RIP to the best Joker of all time. You earned it Heath
Very good way of putting it. I don't think there's ever been an unambitious attempt at portraying or directing the Joker. Even Leto, who I just didn't like, was a much more different attempt at portraying the Joker that was not seen.
I love it, I love that we still talk about this joker. Don't care how good pheonix's joker will be, this one should always have a special place in movie history.
The Greatest On Screen Portrayal of TheJoker there Will Ever Be. I Wish We Would have gotten More of Heath Ledger & Christian Bale in the BatMan Cinematic Universe.
Heath ledger definitely paved the way for what looks to be another gigantic leap in this characters process with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker coming out next month.. can not wait.
IMO one of the most iconic performances in the history of cinema. On par with performances like Marlon Brando in Godfather. Heath Ledger raised the bar not only for comic-book villains, but movie villains in general. Many major movie franchises after this tried to have their own "Heath Ledger Joker" - Silva in Skyfall, Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, Killmonger in Black Panther. I firmly believe that Ledger and Nolan raised the bar for this character, so high, it's now the standard every filmmaker and actor attempting a new take on the character are measured against. It just brings out the best effort in everyone. Ayer and Leto tried hard, perhaps too hard, and failed. Philips and Phoenix went about it a different way and seemingly succeeded. But Leto trying too hard or Phoenix doing his study of descent into madness wouldn't happen without Heath Ledger knocking it out of the park like this.
Haha that's awesome! So glad I could help with your studies. I was intrigued by Nolan's explanation of internal vs. external actors and Ledger being able to encompass both of those
@@Jilloms That actually made me think of RDJ, who I believe is (at least) very external. Not sure about the internal part for him because I don't study acting
I remember watching the Dark Knight in cinemas as a kid and seeing Heaths entrance as the Joker with the disappearing pencil trick. Absolutely phenomenal.
Heath was a lot more than this role, but wow what a legendary performance. Every time I watch the Dark Knight or docs about it, I pick up something new he did to chisel this character into film history. It was and still is, flawless. 💔
His joker is so ingrained in my brain, that, whenver I hear Heath actually speak in his own voice, im unnerved at how he could make his voice sound vastly different in the movie. For me the voice is what made the character. Incredible talent. R.I.P, brother.
If you show a man Brokeback Mountain and then The dark Knight, it is almost impossible to recognise that it was Heath ledger who played both the roles. It actually happened with me. I was awestruck when I realised that.
I hope this performance stays as it is now...one of the most universally praised and probably best depiction of a fictional villain in film history. The independent storytelling methods, perspectives and aesthetics between the Nolan and Burton films just showcase how one story and one character can be told worlds apart and effect people in vastly different ways. It’s such a shame Heath isn’t still here to entertain and amaze us.
The joker with Joaquin Phoenix couldn’t touch this one. Heath perfectly portrayed the mischief and criminality of the Joker character but in the Joaquin one, it just seemed like a homeless man who just needed a lot of therapy. I doubt anything will touch Heath’s joker. Even his eyes change to suit the characters emotions, he did this role deep!
The fact that you are mocking Mark says enough about you. Just one of those pseudo-fanboys who want to seem 'cool' on the internet by talking about Ledger's Joker.
You can't look at any of this film, and say with full certainty that it's heath playing the role. You just look at this guy, and you're taken into the film. The fact that one person can commit their well being to a role for the art of film just shows you how important this performance is in all of history. This is quite possibly the best villain, and best acting ever seen to man.
@@flawed911 he locked himself in a hotel room for at least a month, and acted as the joker. He was a method actor. He sacrificed his mental state for the role.

8:28 he's right you know you get a feeling of damn this character is ready to wreck some serious damage to the current social construct just from those 5 seconds. Masterpiece.
I had seen everything Heath had done before TDK came out so I knew and could recognize him very well. Not for one second did I ever (and even now having seen it dozens of times) see him in this movie. He absolutely disappeared into that performance. Nobody’s done it better.
What’s great about this is, you see it’s every piece of the puzzle that made the joker, not just the acting, it the clothes, the makeup, the script, hair..everything...this entire team had such a clear vision...and that’s what makes something iconic. Also, if it weren’t for such a good team, Heath wouldn’t have been able to tap in so well. Dream team
I hate seeing those old interviews of heath knowing all the stuff he was on (Its pretty apparent). The guy had all the talent in the world, and was still in pain. Coming from an ever recovering addict, you just wish people could find peace before they pay the ultimate price.
rob sosa Yeah, this fucked character is what fucked him right up. Any take-aways from this life-snuffing experience, anyone? Wake the he’ll up, people. God, what a pitiful generation we have here!
Heath Ledgers performance and this version of The Joker is the greatest act ever done in the history of Movies.. I wouldn't say the movie was the best 9/10 because it seemed to miss music and it felt so long in a way... but still one of the greatest ever period.
This performance was so incredibly good, that I don't know if I will go to watch the next one in theater actually. Ledger is the Joker I always wanted to see on screen.
This Joker, and I will speak for all villains in every movie even made, was the most threatening, scary, unpredictable villain of all times. This bad guy didn't need a gauntlet, nor mystic powers, nor super strength, he just needed to express through behavior the darkest side of a man that had nothing to lose, nor win... he just wanted to watch the world burn for no particular reason. Heath Ledger became legend with his own brand of Joker. I will never forget his art and I will never forget this amazing movie, the best superhero movie ever made.
I've been waiting to feel the same way I felt the first time I saw the Dark knight, was the only time I was literally on the edge of my seat in a movie theater.
I remember when this movie released all my friends wanted to go see was this movie and I was down every time. I think I ended up seeing it 4 times in theaters and I loved it every time.
I have never seen more enigmatic, more unpredictable, more formless type of acting!!! No one can imitate this style still now!!! Thats the charisma of this role..!
Ledger and Phoenix both gave us very different versions of the Joker - the former being like the "after", and the latter the "before" - yet both are so brilliant in their portrayal.
Saying Joaquin as the best joker is a sin. These two are two totally different character and doesn't compare to each other. Joaquin is great in his interpretation and his movie's setting. Heath's Joker however will always be my favorite.
10:35, circa: that's why this movie is not about the batman. This one's about the joker. Always felt this way. This is the very first film that narrates the Joker and Batman is quite often 2 steps behind. Thanks to the Nolan bros and Heath for crafting such a character and deliver such a performance
I would love an episode that disects Jonathan Demme's work on Silence of the Lambs. It's one of the few movies that I feel the director takes control of the camera to tell not just an incredible story, but a surprisingly visual story.
Prior to the film's release Michael Caine said that Heath's performance was Oscar worthy and I felt that he was just being kind because of his passing. After watching the film a number of times I can say that Heath was no doubt a phenomenal actor. It's sad that he was taken before his time.

We would’ve gotten more Joker and many more great roles out of him. His posthumous Oscar is proof of that. I’m not sure if those in the upcoming generations who see it for the first time will experience it the same way, but I know it was one of my top 5 favorite times in a theater opening day.
Yup. People lost their Shit when it was announced he would play the joker.
@@26michaeluk Yep. All they saw was "the guy from the gay cowboy movie."
I think it comes around less than every few years
John Turner You may be right.
This was a great watch!
Rest in peace Mr. Ledger.
#legend
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Yes. Really wish we could've seen him take on more films
Although as far as I know, there haven’t been any developments in that storyline yet, I think of the 3 jokers like this:
Golden/Bronze Age Joker=Nicholson/Hammil (one character)
Silver Age Joker=Cesar Romero
Modern Age Joker=Ledger
I also haven’t seen Joaquin’s yet, but I’m going on Friday.
"Directing the Joker" - the quintessential paradox.
You, I like you!
Aaah, I like ur phrase my friend
Very good way of putting it. I don't think there's ever been an unambitious attempt at portraying or directing the Joker. Even Leto, who I just didn't like, was a much more different attempt at portraying the Joker that was not seen.
I love it, I love that we still talk about this joker.
Don't care how good pheonix's joker will be, this one should always have a special place in movie history.
The Greatest On Screen Portrayal of TheJoker there Will Ever Be.
I Wish We Would have gotten More of Heath Ledger & Christian Bale in the BatMan Cinematic Universe.
I agree.
Absolutely correct! Both Ledger and Nolan changed the game.
Star Trek Into Darkness?! Or did you mean Star Trek The Wrath of Khan.
@@patriciotanjr.3555 No, Khan is in Into Darkness
i can't beleive it. Yesterday I was studying exactly the interpretation and acting skills of this joker. no way you just made a video of it.
What did you learn about the interpretation in your studies?
Heath's enactment of "Joker" is truly epic. He made the Joker feel like a harbinger of doom but also one who was able to see through the human psyche!
Words can't explain the perfect, talent, work, art and love put into this film and this character. Such a great person on and off screen. RIP Heath.
"He cuts across the movie like the shark in Jaws" holy shit that is so true
I read This comment the same time it was narrated🤣
I remember watching the Dark Knight in cinemas as a kid and seeing Heaths entrance as the Joker with the disappearing pencil trick. Absolutely phenomenal.
Whenever there's a video about The Dark Knight/ Heath Ledger's Joker, I will watch it.
See you again next week! haha
This wasn't a batman movie, it was the best damn joker movie ever created. This man was brilliant
True.
Heath did such a great job making his voice sound really different
Heath was a lot more than this role, but wow what a legendary performance. Every time I watch the Dark Knight or docs about it, I pick up something new he did to chisel this character into film history. It was and still is, flawless. 💔
2:02 Jared - am I a joke to you
Everyone - yes
Never
See Zack Snyder's Justice league version of the Joker and you wont make fun of him And Gunn also said that WB Cut big part of the Suicide squad movie
@@charles___ just seen it and yes hes alot better but hes only in it for a minute or two and it doesn't matter what was cut what we got was dreadful
Tom Hardy really made Bane memorable too. Let's give credit where credit is due.
Aaron also was at least for me the definitive Harvey Dent /two face. For sure one of the best trilogy of all time
meh, the whole storyline of Bane and a Talia in hiding was pretty lame compared to how tight the Dark Knight plot was
@@magneto44 agreed. All was right until Talia revealed herself and Bane became a minion in love. Blergh
@Aaron A420 It was rushed and full of plot holes and continuity errors. I enjoyed it but it paled in comparison to its two predecessors.
I watch those films just for the villains
His joker is so ingrained in my brain, that, whenver I hear Heath actually speak in his own voice, im unnerved at how he could make his voice sound vastly different in the movie. For me the voice is what made the character. Incredible talent. R.I.P, brother.
When he licked his lips I got the chills every time
If you show a man Brokeback Mountain and then The dark Knight, it is almost impossible to recognise that it was Heath ledger who played both the roles.
It actually happened with me. I was awestruck when I realised that.
A 100 years from now this performance will still be a reference. Absolute genius.
Jesus, I never realized he was only on screen 25-33 minutes in a film of 152 minutes and he changed things.. forever.
14 years down the line. Still fascinated by Heath Ledger's work.
Never liked batman or any super hero movies until this came out, that is the power of Heath Ledger .
No that's because of Nolan
🤣🤣🤣
Heath ledger did amazing job dont get me wrong but that was nolan
To some extent health
barry 234 Nolan did ‘Begins’ & this guy didn’t like it. Therefore it’s because of heath
2:03 Any reason why you left out Jared Leto (and Mark Hamill)?
Just kidding. It doesn't matter.
Great video.
Mark Hamill is the joker.
Why would you mention Leto in the same sentence as Hamill.
@@johnmcgowan2348 this is a fact
Embarrassing himself
The fact that you are mocking Mark says enough about you. Just one of those pseudo-fanboys who want to seem 'cool' on the internet by talking about Ledger's Joker.
Imagine the roles could he have landed in the past 10+ years after this proformance?!
His well being?
@@flawed911 he locked himself in a hotel room for at least a month, and acted as the joker. He was a method actor. He sacrificed his mental state for the role.
"He cuts through the movie, like the shark, in Jaws." Amazing simile.
Heath portrayal of Joker goosebumps me until now...Im not tired watching over and over the movie Dark Knight specially the scenes of Heath Ledger...his acting is beyond excellence
"We are tonight's entertainment...." He was not lying. Rest In Peace Legend.
A character which kept us hooked for a decade.Truly a legend!
The fact that when he’s talking about all the great joker performances and the picture just leaves out Jared Leto is himarious
I feel the acting, the look, the costumes were all amazing but the dialogues this character had in the movie were even more amazing!!
The entire movie is a masterpiece. The entire journey of the characters was perfectly expressed
Nolan is a genius. The way he breaks down details and his thought process. Him and Eastwood are my favorites.
8:28 he's right you know you get a feeling of damn this character is ready to wreck some serious damage to the current social construct just from those 5 seconds. Masterpiece.
I honestly don't think you'll ever beat Heaths Joker, it's an unbelievable performance
This movie will never get old
I had seen everything Heath had done before TDK came out so I knew and could recognize him very well. Not for one second did I ever (and even now having seen it dozens of times) see him in this movie. He absolutely disappeared into that performance. Nobody’s done it better.
Christopher Nolan is the best director hands down. And he always chooses good actors for his roles. Just so damn perfect and brilliant.
This will forever go down in history as one of THE BEST villain performances of all time. RIP Heath Ledger, you are always missed.
One of the greatest performance of all time, Heath Ledger will always be my favorite live action Joker.
Scott Hamilton will you just shut up please
Heath Ledgers performance and this version of The Joker is the greatest act ever done in the history of Movies.. I wouldn't say the movie was the best 9/10 because it seemed to miss music and it felt so long in a way... but still one of the greatest ever period.
Nobody can ever meet the standards of this joker.
One of the best actor performances I have ever seen. Heath Ledger amazing, outstanding and brilliant.
This man will never die.
This performance was so incredibly good, that I don't know if I will go to watch the next one in theater actually. Ledger is the Joker I always wanted to see on screen.
You should give joaquin a chance too before you judge mate.
I would have loved to see more of his Joker. Makes me sad actually
He displays the many subtle, unknown signs of greatnesses
I so wish he would’ve had the chance to see the reaction people had to his amazing performance
I liked the video only 19 seconds in. Well done mate
Haha thanks! Hope you enjoy the rest of it
I would like this but it Has 69 likes so 🤷♂️
This Joker, and I will speak for all villains in every movie even made, was the most threatening, scary, unpredictable villain of all times.
Will always be my favorite joker ever
One of the best performances. Truly mesmerizing every time he was on screen.
2:05 I love the fact that Jared Leto isn't even shown when talking about great Jokers.
Or Mark Hamill who gave us the best voice.
He is bad.
I remember when this movie released all my friends wanted to go see was this movie and I was down every time. I think I ended up seeing it 4 times in theaters and I loved it every time.
Great video! I'm looking forward to part 2!
I have never seen more enigmatic, more unpredictable, more formless type of acting!!! No one can imitate this style still now!!! Thats the charisma of this role..!
Drama has reached a level where the artist is completely invisible. Only stays is character in your mind for decades even probably till we die
But we can all agree they’re both better than Leto
He gave this role his all. Ultimately his life. And it shows.
Thank you for a Christopher Nolan video!
No problem! I plan to do more on his other films in the future as well
10:35, circa: that's why this movie is not about the batman. This one's about the joker. Always felt this way. This is the very first film that narrates the Joker and Batman is quite often 2 steps behind. Thanks to the Nolan bros and Heath for crafting such a character and deliver such a performance
Just the way Heat Ledger cloud've develope the character would've been amazing..R.I.P Heat L
I would love an episode that disects Jonathan Demme's work on Silence of the Lambs. It's one of the few movies that I feel the director takes control of the camera to tell not just an incredible story, but a surprisingly visual story.
Thanks for the recommendation! I'll be sure to cover it in the future
Prior to the film's release Michael Caine said that Heath's performance was Oscar worthy and I felt that he was just being kind because of his passing. After watching the film a number of times I can say that Heath was no doubt a phenomenal actor. It's sad that he was taken before his time.
Yes by far one of the greatest performances by any actor. And yes he did make me nervous just watching him so unpredictable
This is a Masterpiece
Untouchable character
Thanku heath
RIP
Just phenomenal take on the joker .. my favorite joker of all time
Genius and also method acting which is the scary part
