Nolan liked to make it as realistic as possible, as believable as possible. But he also added effort to tell the story. The reality of the setting, action, gadgets etc are all just a blanket over a simply good looking story. It's not a movie about just stopping the criminals and bringing about justice, it's about a man who becomes a symbol, of something more than he or any other man is, sos that he can restore order to a city full of evil and corruption. The dark knight is about introducing chaos to a city where its defined as black and white of batman vs the bad guys. But when the joker throws batman for a loop it becomes a battle for the soul of Gotham, not how much money joker stole or the mob ripping off the cops. Its about batman trying to save a city that deserves more, not batman working with law enforcement to stop a bunch of gangsters.

    1. The Dark Knight
    2. The Dark Knight Rises
    3. Batman Begins

I hope more future DC films will take notes and find its strength and potential when the camera is in the hands of the right person.

    You can tell just by listening to Nolan that he truly cares about the craft of filmmaking. This isn’t a technician or someone obsessed with style. That’s why I’ll never understand why he likes Michael Bay’s movies or why he chose Zack Snyder to direct Man of Steel.

    Nolan, I think is THE director of the past 2 decades. Not sure if Batman Begins put him on the map. Or if he did any films before that. But clearly he does take directing to another level. And I don't think any one would be disappointed watching any of his films. My only gripe is his preference for NOT embracing "4k surround sound formats" like Dolby Atmos or DTS X. The film company, I believe it was Warner Bros., could have included the "STD BluRay sound track Nolan preferred" AND an Atmos track for the 4k discs. How much better sounding the trilogy would have been IMHO in Atmos. If it had it I would have bought the trilogy again on 4k HDR BluRay.
    For me it makes no sense to buy a 4k movie if it doesn't have both stellar 4k HDR (or Dolby Vision) video AND Atmos or DTS X..might as well stick with the standard bluray discs. Buying 4k only if we don't already own that film on DVD or STD BluRay.

    • @Flubly
      @Flubly 4 года назад

      When shooting film, a monitor doesn't give you any reliable chroma or luma information. It'd be similar to just looking through the viewfinder. You're totally at the mercy of the DP to execute those properly. It would only be useful for seeing framing and what the performance/blocking looks like to the camera. Nolan is brilliant but this aspect more shows how much he trusts his cinematographer. Wally Pfister shot every movie of his from Memento to Dark Knight Rises so they definitely were on the same wavelength.
