It's been one of my favourite vocal/delivery performances ever for years. But always in that crappy quality that's been online...
I've played it in the studio to many singers I've produced and wanted to throw some inspiration their way.
And absolute stunner of performance.
A prime example of a singer making a song her own. Elvis who?... :-) :-) Love to you both. He's killing it on the guitar and the band is feeling you perfectly.

When I first heard this song in the 80s it stopped me in my tracks and I had to rewind the tape (damn I’m old) and listen to it 3 more times. I missed the bus to school that day. It really hit all the feels. Haven’t heard it in years and you know what? It still does . And when I wake up…..
This was a terrifying song when Elvis did it. Fiona Apple turns it into a full-length horror film then jams it so tightly into 7 minutes that it screams.
It feels wrong to me when people treat her heartfelt performances as regular entertainment. They cheer when they should be silent, and they clap when they should weep.

This is not just the most beautiful and impactful video/song/performance I've ever seen, it's a transcendental experience. The moment at 6:32 always takes my breath away; a dazed Fiona comes back into her body, bringing us back to earth with her.

They say that when you fall in love with a song, you remember everything about the environment you were in as you first heard it. That holds true with this performance of I Want You. For the previous three months, I've had it on a constant loop. The only time I stepped away was to branch deeper into both Elvis Costello and Fiona Apple. In the last week alone, I have purchased the 45 of Costello's version, discovered Fiona's first two, BRILLIANT, albums, and crossed paths with a few additional Costello songs. I am mesmerized. This song has truly become my home.
I bought the 45 back then, and was in love. Can you imagine....?

This is one of the most powerful live vocal performances I've ever heard. It's both difficult to watch, and memorizing at the same time. Passion like that comes from a dark place, but holy shit does it make good art.
This performance did not deserve applause. It should have received absolute silence, to let it sink in and time for contemplation. Love this.

Literally the best performance I’ve ever seen.
I’ve watched this hundreds of times over the years and it gets better every time.
Nobody else in the universe could play that guitar accompaniment to such a disturbed but brilliant piece sung by the only person in the universe who could truly bring it to such a shocking but fragile form of life.

Elvis Costello is a rock God. And Fiona, well, lets just say I'm a fan.This joint venture with Fiona when she was super popular was a marketing play by VH1 for ratings. No shame in that, they knew who and what was hot at the time, but its always a gamble to put two hot acts together and expect chemistry. Neither artist needed to do this, but the result was an incredible collaboration that resulted in three gut-wrenching, rip your heart out songs that will stand the test of time as some of the best rock ever made. I come back to it from time to time because the passion is unparalleled, not just from Fiona, but from Elvis and his band knowing where to let her go and where to rip.

I think Fiona is a timeless talent and largely underrated... so it's very satisfying to see a legend like Elvis take one of her songs and point out he's covering it because of how great it is (he says this). He has great reverence for her.

For as long as it lasts (and often a while afterwards) this performance takes from me my ability to breathe in all but the tiniest shuddering snatches. I can't consume it passively, deriving some sufficient level of emotional catharsis and then moving on, as I'm used to doing. I feel something extracted from myself in return.
