A companion piece to his most beautiful rendition of Psycho. A tortured soul, he is, and you can see it in his interviews from time to time. Society leaves little room for genius. One of the few artists you identify immediately as your own, who becomes a part of you, and I was lucky enough to see him on his first American tour at a place called Pogos in overland park ks, after My Aim is True's release. My little town.
Warning; rant ahead. This has got to be the most disturbing, beautiful, deranged, obsessed, sincere song ever. Am a fan of Elvis Costello from his first elpee onwards, and it feels like he as a person will never learn and yet he is some kind of role model for me. Most of all, EC is sincere. And ANGRY. I think I've learned a bit about myself all these years. This is a song from an embittered yet idealistic narcist. But he's not a perfectionistic narcist: here he sings downright badly, out of tune and rough. For which I admire him even more, he IS capable of seeing himself in perspective.. in some ways. Where on the original recording he proves it can be chilllingly beautiful. Elvis has got a mastery of singing I only can dream of ever reaching for. If anything, this song gets under my skin and means a lot.
The anger turns into borderline PUNK, and I hear a lot of Hendrix tribute too on the guitar and Neil Young ("Down By The River.."). AMAZING performance. The days before Auto-Tune. Sacret
It's as much a love song as it's a song about obsession, the bad kind. It's actually a pretty unhealthy thing our boy Elvis is bringing forth. Sound like somebody could get hurt... and I like it!
What a song! He ended the concert tonight in Thousand Oaks with this song. He did a 3 song encore, of Allison, a spanish version of Radio-radio, and then this at 11 minutes long. Everyone was stunned, it was a powerful performance!!
I didn't care for the studio album version of this song. Then I saw Elvis perform it live in Seattle a couple of years ago and it sent chills up my spine--especially his remarkable falsetto vocal at the end. This is an extended version of the song where Elvis really works the performance and works the guitar like crazy. IMO, he actually goes into Kurt Cobain territory a bit here. To me, this is the definitive performance of the song that I have heard so far.
I am now an Elvis fan! After I pick up my heart from the floor I will proceed to the record store and get all of this mans albums. Oh, damn! There are no more record stores! I will find a way.
Just found Elvis Costello a hour ago. Never listened to his music ever...Got totally blown away! Shit.. he's so god damn honest, energic, cool, rough. He just owns the scene. WOW, so glad that I found him.
It's been a while now that I thought that the version with Ms Apple was tha right concept, how wrong was I (and I am 45, not young), absolutely spot on.... I want you... fantastic...
Dang, that was remarkable! Don't think I've ever seen him stretch out like that before -- quite a workout for those little hands of concrete. Many thanks for linking this one up for us.
This song is amazingly composed of phrases I love. "I woke up, and one of us was crying". "It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for". "I'm not ashame to say I cried for you". "I want to hear he pleases you more than I do". This song can be a romantic (maybe obsessive) song, or a break up, but anyways its a beautiful song to listen to
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written and I am a music snob! With that said Elvis gets more props from me for obviously discovering Zach Galifianakis and letting him play bass until he was ready to go on to greater things.
This song came out when everyone said he was "over"... uh. No. A great artist always has something up his sleeve. There are decades more genius to come if we give him a reason to keep writing. Spread this stuff around friends.
To the benefit of those reading Italian: Questa canzone inca**ata, rovente, spinosa, che sbatte e tira e spara la frase « ti voglio » in una declinazione infernale, questo inno torvo ed esausto all’amore umano.
THIS IS THE BEST EC SONG. HANDS DOWN HIS MOST FECUND MATERIAL. HE DOES WHAT EVERY GOOD MURDER-BALLADEER DOES; GET YOU TO SYMPATHIZE WITH A MURDERER OR PSYCHOPATH. JESUS IF THE INSANE CLOWN POSSE ONLY KNEW WHAT YOU COULD GET ACCOMPLISHED WITH SOME POISE AND RESTRAINT AND A JAZZMASTER1
i'll want you Pia ..even if you 're no more among us ...noone like you my first and probably myt everlast love ....i can't discrabe my pain ..... lose ....no one can fill my gap in my soul .. we 're forever blowing bubbles...17 /5/2011 ...the suddest day of my life
295terry1 are you OK bud, don't look back in sadness, celebrate what you had, live on for her, the best thing you can do is enjoy life as I'm sure she would want you to
Phwoar! I've never cheated on anyone, ever. This song makes me think I should of...but only if this was the result...which it wouldn't be (married for over 25 years).
This song was played at the cremation of the boyfriend of one of my friends yesterday..very emotional.. First time i heard the song..i will never forget it..
This performance is legendary.
Lord, he just blasts this in all the right places...angst, pain,,,the scratch in his guitar, in his heart...it's all there!...Brilliant!
I can't stop coming back to this. It's brilliant and moving. Unbelievable.
Killer take, just saw Elvis live and he's raw energy.
goose bumps: raw, distorted and full of beauty, honest too!!!!
this is my favorite E.C. song and one of THE Most powerful songs i've ever heard in my life.
The man can work a guitar. Drawn to this song like a moth to a self-destructive, apocalyptic inferno
Truly the most accurate musical description of heartbreak. Beautiful!!
The definitive version...none better. Always real and raw.
that was literally breathtaking.

I am unable to stop viewing this, it is one of the most stirring things I have ever seen.

My boy was ON that night. Chills.

one of the best songs EVER!
10 minutes of pure glory. this song is the shizzz.

He's actually similar to KC in the way that they both play guitar with their weak hand as strumming hand. But then again Knopfler also does I think
Thank you all yes 🎉🎉🎉
Brilliant version of a brilliant song. Thanks.
This is the greatest live performance of all time! Please don't EVER remove it!
I am now an Elvis fan! After I pick up my heart from the floor I will proceed to the record store and get all of this mans albums. Oh, damn! There are no more record stores! I will find a way.
Best version of one the best songs, ever. Period.
Enough said
That point where the crowd half cheers and gasps at at 5:28 - wild performance - haunting.
I so totally love this man...
Just found Elvis Costello a hour ago. Never listened to his music ever...Got totally blown away! Shit.. he's so god damn honest, energic, cool, rough. He just owns the scene. WOW, so glad that I found him.

absolutely stunning performance!
awesome. The Real King.
the best. i love this man
It's just so real. So accurate. The fear, jealousy, hatred, depression, helplessness, sadness, and anger of being cheated on...
