    In this LeatherSeats.com Tech Tips Video Eric shows several ways that our installation dept. leverages thermal convection from both a commercial upholstery steamer and an industrial heat gun to quickly and efficiently remove wrinkles and improve the overall fitment on our full replacement custom leather-trimmed seat upholstery kit for a 2015 - 2019 S550 Ford Mustang. All Elite automotive upholsterers know the power of heat as it pertains to achieving the best results when working with a wide range of materials used in a variety of automotive upholstery related jobs and tasks. Whether you are new to automotive upholstery or a mechanically inclined Do-It-Yourselfer considering your first aftermarket leather kit installation you should find the information in the above video helpful. The commercial grade upholstery steamer and industrial heat gun are not considered "required tools" for most aftermarket leather-trimmed upholstery kit installations, but they certainly will make the job easier and if the tools are used properly will help even a seasoned DIYer to achieve much better up front fitment. It is not shown in this video, but after the factory upholstery is removed and before we start installing the new upholstery we steam the factory seat core foam to make sure that we bring it back as close to the original size as possible. We also use the steamer to heat up the seat upholstery kit by applying steam to the inside of each cover just before it goes on to soften the leather and make the cover easier to work into the optimal final position on the seat frame and foam. This video shows how effectively the same steamer and heat gun can be at improving overall fitment after the basic installation work is completed. As Eric states in the video, if either of these tools are used incorrectly by an inexperienced installer they can do A LOT of DAMAGE to leather very quickly and should NEVER be used on synthetic materials such as Vinyl or Polyurethane. Also, as a part of Keep in mind that in many cases leaving your seats sitting in direct sunlight for a 6 - 10 hours on a HOT summer day is just about as effective as using a heat gun and much less risky! The Sun does a fantastic job of slowly heating the leather, causing it to relax and adapt to the seat foam and frame without any real risk of damage to the materials. For the heat gun specifically, we recommend that you seek out formal training from an experienced automotive upholstery technician before using this tool for fitment improvement. If you do insist on trying out a heat gun for fitment improvement on an aftermarket automotive leather-trimmed upholstery kit and you can't acquire any training we would highly recommend that you make sure you know what parts of your interior are safe (real leather ONLY) for heat gun and that as you work those parts you are VERY conservative with the application of heat experimenting and testing at lower heat settings before moving up into the higher heat ranges! If you have any questions about the process please give us a call at 1-866-639-7328 or email us at sales@leatherseats.com and we will be glad to go over more information with you. If you are interested in out leather upholstery kits be sure to contact us! We offer free leather samples that we can mail out to you so you can see any of our 65+ colors in person! We also have an online configurator that allows you to custom build your own leather interior with any of the available options that we offer. Would this also work to smoothen out creases in alcantara / suede seats? I have like 3 or 4 pop up creases on the lower right leg area.

    • @hotrod3395
      @hotrod3395 Год назад +1

      This kind of technique relies on leather’s tendency to shrink when wetted and then heated. Alcantara does not have that property, though true suede might. The #1 rule is test on a small, inconspicuous spot before you attempt anything with the visible upholstery.

    Will the sun inevitably perform the same job?
    I have a steamer but it's also pretty damn hot and my car is a convertible... so would I get the same results just putting down the top and letting it sit outside in the sun for a few hours?

    • @LeatherSeats
      @LeatherSeats  4 года назад

      silenc3x During the installation process, nothing can really replace steam, however, once the upholstery is installed, letting the seats sit in direct sunlight for a day is one of the best ways to get rid of minor wrinkles! We put the seats out in the sun for almost all of the installs that we do. 👍

    I could really use your help here. I have a 2023 Audi s4. I brought the vehicle in for some minor bumper damage from a shopping cart. The overweight appraiser repeatedly climbed in and out of my car to take pictures of random things and in his awkward fashion of doing so he caused permanent increases in the left side seat bolster of the driver seat that I can't get out and are very noticeable. Is there a way to remove creases from the seat bolsters?

    Will this work with using clothes steamer without heat gun ? Can I use steamer only then leave the seat out in the sun for a few hours ?

    • @LeatherSeats
      @LeatherSeats  2 года назад

      Thach Tran Yes, any steamer that can get the steam where you need it will work. Heat gunning should only be used with great caution and we don't recommend it for everyone. As for sunshine, that should happen with every install! It can do magic for minor wrinkles. If you have any further questions, please email sales@leatherseats.com and we would love to help.

    Would a hairdryer be just as affective to shrink the leather

    • @LeatherSeats
      @LeatherSeats  2 года назад +1

      Andrew Griffith Unfortunately no, very minor wrinkles might move just a bit if you have a hairdryer that runs super hot but with those, you would be better off putting the seats out on the driveway in direct sun for a few hours. Heat guns can work under specific conditions but never on or around vinyl. You can get into trouble very quickly so we tend to only recommend heat gunning to professional installers. You can check out our video on that here: ruclips.net/video/6KME5tJtjBM/видео.html

      63 Impala rag Dude Sun time does not replace using steam and/or heat gun but it will help with minor wrinkles. As far as the tools are concerned any household clothing or upholstery steamer can work as long as you can concentrate the steam into focused area. You might also check out our heat gun specific video as well: ruclips.net/video/6KME5tJtjBM/видео.html

    Can I use a blow dryer ?

    • @LeatherSeats
      @LeatherSeats  4 года назад +1

      5100yes Hair dryers have very little effect on leather in most situations. What makes heat guns so effective is that there is a ton of heat and not much airflow. That keeps the air hot as it hits the leather. Blow dryers have some heat and a ton of airflow which cools off the air going onto the leather and limits its effect. Here is a video that we made showing the difference: ruclips.net/video/6KME5tJtjBM/видео.html
