This is Why Ford 2nd Gen 3.5L EcoBoost Engines Rattle so LOUD on Startup!

Ford has had this problem since 2004... seriously 20 years.
This is robbery. Should be a class action lawsuit for what they charge. I agree... 20 years. Other mfgs seem to have figured it out.
This is why I still drive a 99 Suburban with a 454 lol
@@samholdsworth420 "but, but, but, but........the gas mileage you'd gain with one of these!!!!"
@@dlewis9760 fuel mileage with a side of headache 😂
Ford need a friggin tilt hood like a semi at least if they can't figure out how to fix all the diesel and Ecoboost problems. These are 3000$ problems because of labor to get at the part
The Service department at Harrisonburg Ford in Virginia told me that, “it is not a problem because the rattle did not last for 5 seconds”. They refused warranty service. Went to a different dealer and they scheduled me in immediately.
Who would join a class action lawsuit on this? My dealer refused to repair while under warranty claiming they could not replicate this yet I leave it in the driveway an hour and I get this noise. Now it's out of warranty they magically found this problem and want thousands to fix
Wow… that’s shady.
If the problem was logged at the dealership while in warranty then they should now fix it under warranty….? not sure how it works in the USA but that is how it was in Australia
Next time tow your truck to the dealer so they can get the first start up
I would pursue it, for sure..my truck is a 2013, and was long out of warranty when I had the work done.
as long as it was logged at dealership it should be covered. contact "Ford' DIRECTLY.
One would think, that this issue could very easily be solved?
I mean, cam phasers have been in wide spread use for years. (& not only in Fords)
It is, Ford has 2 systems. The 6.2L cam phasors never fail. They use the cam springs to phase the cam. 5.0L is similar. I think these use oil pressure.
Is a 8 hr job😅
2015 Gen 1 3.5 EB 147k miles and phasers still work like a champ. Probably just jinx’d myself…. lol
Henry Ford would be very disappointed. 🤔
Indeed.
I believe he said 'they will buy every vehicle twice'
I think he would be more disappointed about America not listening to his warning in a certain book of his that was banned.

415k on my 3.5. It’s all about how you take care of them. 95% of people will not take meticulous care of their vehicles. Ask me how I know.
@@michaelstevens04 That's the biggest issue with GM engines with AFM too. Defective lifters fail at very low mileage. The ones that fail at 70k miles or 100k miles. Those were due to owner stupidity or laziness. The things that cause timing chain stretch, VVT solenoid failures, and cam phaser wear... it's the same bad customer behaviors that cause AFM lifter wear and sludge that leads to failure.
@@hochhaul I change my oil every 4k miles with amsoil SS. Works like a champ
I admire your work. You spend so much time in making us understand the issue before fixing.
oh i love my crown vics 4.6 2v, smooth and quiet. no paser bs!
Engineered failure, they've had this issue since 2000
Im getting paranoid of mine, everyone tells me my eco sounds normal but i feel like its got some kinda sound .. probly just normal chain sound.. i hope.
Love my old 5.4L triton 2 valve, 210K miles to date, trouble free…

Ford has has TOO many issues like these. Then again, GM has the valve lifter/cam issues.
Maybe it’s time for the HEMI!!!!
More junk produced by ford. One would think they would have the stuff figured out by now. What a bunch of crap.
Oil change use 5 quarts oil and one quart Lucas oil. Problem solved.
Cant go wrong with the original 351w
That 5.8 ain't no joke 😎
Some F150 came with the 6.2L. You will never see them apart.

@@BruceDragon-sf1tr Also has 16 spark plugs. Plenty of vids on YT about it.
We could still have simple and reliable engines if it wasn't for the EPA.
I just wish I could get a 7 liter version of the old GM 3800 series for my trucks, and a smaller one for my car. Leave the DOHC variable cams for the motorcycle guys. (The way it SHOULD be!) I just want a low rev high torque engine that will last 500K miles with decent maintenance. If you want more power, then over build it, and slap the turbos on it, but (even if you have to replace the turbo a couple of times) it should STILL last at least 500,000 miles, and still have some good miles left. No reason this could not be done.
Cam phasers suck, thermostat sucks and to be upgraded, 10R80 tranny sucks (go neutral-out, sticks in P, CDF drum is defective, a bunch of TSB due), glitchy SYNC sucks 😵💫
The 5.4 3v only had two phasers, now we've got 4! Double the failures!
Even after all these years, they're still messing with phaser designs and software updates to try to hide phaser rattles. At least they aren't like Toyota and just insist it's normal for their engines to rattle on cold start.
Laughing in 2V 😂

3.5 liter eco boost is fucking garbage ford had those engines in all of there vehicles ALL OF THEM 😢
Getting ready to tackle that on my 2014 F150 platinum 3.5. I do have 150-miles though. Probably might change the timing chains and water pump while in there
Might as well upgrade oil pump too if possible like in the 5.4 3V
Very true
I have a 2014 Ford F-150 Limited with 95k and the Timing Chain stretched 2 links and just had FORD Tech's Changed mine and what a difference!
Good thing you got it fixed before it skipped some teeth.@@michaeldelrossi4487
Dont even bother. Have done it twice on mine in the last two years. Always get the "latest and greatest updated" parts from the dealer, rattle came back both times within the first 50 miles.
No offense makuloco, but fords are trash,
Does it cause damage?
Do you recommend replacing all Phasers after 1 fails?
Yes
I would. One already has the front engine torn apart and they are readily accessible. Someone suggested the water and oil pump while you are at it.
Always replace it all
@@FordTechMakuloco is the new Phasers updated products or can we expect them to fail after some milage like those that are removed ?

How my 5.4 almost sounded. Locked out the phasers and did away with the Vvt
After dealing with my 2017 F150 I've bought my last new Ford. This truck spends as much time in the shop as it spends in the driveway.
I said the same thing with my 19 dodge. Nothing you pay for these days is quality.
A diesel EcoBoost?
I just purchased a 2017 3.5 F150 ecoboost. Now I think I should’ve kept my 5.0 F150
Lol...ive had my 65 mustang with a rebuilt 289 for 30 years..and still drives like a charm, easy to tune or work on.
The latest version of the phazers correct this issue? Just what I have heard.
Yup
Do you have a part number?
What year has the latest version?
I'll keep my 5.3 Silverado no dohc turbo trash nothing about these trucks are reliable ive worked on too many with low miles that are mechanically trashed.
Oh, what a surprise, a problem with Ford? Surprised? Just saw a news story that Ford is the most recalled automotive brand for recalls. Just got to ask yourself, how smart are their buyers?
Ford is just fucked at this point, everything they do has problems. I have a Fusion and its a hot mess.
As long as it goes away is fine to just keep driving it like that...
Unacceptable engineering and manufacturing
Cost me $5,000 to get it fixed. Damn it Ford....
Lwts go bak go 302s and 351s
Oh yeah mine is worse.
Dealership refused to fix it.
That engine looks way worse than the 5.4 3v setup nooo thanks
I bought a 2018 3.5l ecoboost xlt 4wd last year 46k mi, it had a year warranty 2 weeks before end of warranty cam phasers went out 6.5 thousand bucks including new timing chain, guides etc. They had the truck for a month. I bought an extended warranty up to 105k MI. Hoping to have no more problems. Good video.
Ouch. That hurts,
Did they do proper maintenance? Oil changes every 5,000 miles? Likely not. A lot of these failures are from people towing heavy often with a light duty truck or driving the piss out of them. There’s many with no problems. These videos make it seem like it’s every truck.
yes they did.
My ford fusion does that too and I got the huge 1.6 with the baby snail!
Too busy building rainbow trucks…
Ford just can't get those phasers right
What kind of scanner do you have?
This is exactly my truck, haha. Including the cam phaser noise 😩
Its too bad some dealers are still repairing these with the exact same phasers that fail instead of installing the new updated version.
It’s a good thing they fixed all their problems since the 5.4 fiasco… Oh, never mind 🤦🏼
Oh that or looks great with those headlights. Way better than the 24s
Why isn’t it locked though?
This is most lilely causes by using 5 weight oil.
is it bad ? how bad ? my truck does this
Excellent video as Always !
Sounds like junk, it is junk.
2.5 camry enters chat 😅
Ford has a better idea……buy a Toyota 😂
Lol the new Tundra has more issues than any other half ton on the market right now 😂
My 2014 finally did it at 246000. I traded it off.
246k is a good run
Simple? $6500 later, pull the cab off the frame, crazy that consumers are paying for this repair. The design is crap, and that's why they changed it; thanks Ford..
You do not have to pull the cab for this repair. 🤦♂️
@e.b.6766 I wonder why the dealer did it..they charged me $50 for a cab-bolt replacement..
never seen anyone so upset over a noise. many people never fix this and go 300 thousand miles. its just a noise
Not upset
What’s going on (ford)you can’t fixed small problems…🫣🫣🫣🫣🫣😖😖😖😖😖😖
like your vids because you don't talk down to people.
Why is that engine have Varnish in it already. Don't people know how to look at the color of their engine oil and just change it.
It is boosted.
Junk & over priced.
How expensive to fix?
Yeah it's bad, and the shavings end up in the oil pan, yet Ford has no solution, just keep churning them out. I love the truck but dang, come on engineers, its been three generations, WTH?
So what would happen if a guy didn't get it fixed?
Engine is fucked
@@denneychavez9972 Not for this issue, but cars in general where the service writers talked like that. I appreciated the bluntness.
Eventually the timing chain would snap or the guides since they’re plastic would get worn through from the chain slapping it on a hard start up every time… so yea I’d say the engine would be fucked. But let us know how it goes.
I can't figure out why people keep buying this crap over and over.
@jefftracystoutenburg5315 yeah unfortunately I didn't do enough research until after I bought the truck and noticed the rattle if I knew then what I know now...I would've steered clear.... they sure do pull nice though, that was the main reason I bought it I have a 20 ft fiberglass boat and the eco pulls it like a beast
Thanks for validating why I will NEVER pay money for a Ford product ever again.
It's funny because people always talk about Chevy and Dodges fuel management nightmare...
Ford has its issues as well
Modern Chevy Dodge and Ford vehicles have issues that I believe the café is to reason

The pollution controls on modern engines are making them fail sooner. How is manufacturing a new car and scrapping an old car cleaner than just keeping an old one on the road?
They have the wool pulled over your eyes clearly 😔
Ford for cam Failures
Junk for 20 years
Do the 2021 and up have this issue corrected?
In essence yes
Now ask yourself why does it not lock. Then fix the issue
That's all Bullshit..
Only engine I would go for 5.4L 3V over all eco engines. 5.4L 3V in my 04 Crew cab, original timing kits until 230k miles. Amazing it runs great since 04, I listened the sound of cam phasers finally worn out but nothing serious rattle or engine oil on something like that so I pulled everything a parts and bought brand new Ford OEM timing kits for $1,300 plus Melling Oil Pump 340HV. I put everything on my 5.4L 3V back and it runs really good. Thank to Ford Tech Brian that show many videos how he fixed them. I have learned a lot from him.
2 valve SOHC Mod motors are the best motors.
Build ford tough
Quality is job one 😂
Do you have upgraded parts to fix the problem or does ford only replace with same parts
New parts. I had mine done at 50k

You have a gold engine?!
When you don’t change your oil enough it turns to gold for the mechanic.
Nice oil varnish... must be using motorcraft oil.
All that discoloration behind the timing cover = poor maintenence. More trouble on the horizon.
How much parts and labour all 4 phasers

Yea, when I was looking for a new Ford truck. They tried hard to sell me one with this junk eco bost. They were claiming it's the greatest thing on earth. And no other engine options for me. So I left and ended up finding a very clean, low mileage normal v8. Still have it, and now I am pushing about 275,000 miles.
Wonder why Ford keeps using rejection parts. Ford don't care. Sadly I have one, 2005. But I like the truck overall.
Junk
Why does this happen? It certainly shouldn't be the fault of the trucks owner!
Hell no
Junk
I’ll keep my 2013 5.0 V8
210000Kms no problems just oil changes
@FordTechMakuloco I am looking to purchase a 2015 or up Ford Transit for a camper build. These used rigs often have over 200k miles on them. With the 3.5 ecoboost, i will look for a leaking oil pan and rattling at startup, what else should i be looking for?
I need to go watch more of your vids, i have done head gasket repairs and valve jobs, so this looks doable in my shadetree shop.
The pin breaks off that holds the phaser locked in place. When there is oil pressure, it stops.
Nearly all higher mileage Toyota Corolla and Camry in my area rattles at start up. Even the V6 Rav4 from 2007 makes the sound. I have Toyota owners get upset when I tell um to fix it. They either tell me it's a Toyota and doesn't need anything other than oil changes and tires or just attack per personally.
The other common issue is the crazy burning and leaks happening over in Toyota land on some ebgines especially if you don't take care of the oil change.
So ya all cars have issues.
I don't have any problems with my 2018 Lariat. I know they beefed up the cam phaser issues on my truck as well. Better tensioners on the chain and something else, i forget. I also change oil often and dont putt putt looking for fuel savings. It's race engine technology, not a Prius.
I wish ford would figure our phasers
It's really kind of crazy how long they have been messing with phasers and having this issue. Then again Toyota has these issues on some engines, it's just that they tell customers it's "normal" and it isn't a problem... until it damages the inside of the engine.
Even in a short, you are full of good info. Thank you
Always great content 👍🏻
Correct me if I am wrong, 2021 plus has updated phasers and doesn't have this issue anymore?

I had enough of Ford Motor issues I had this problem 3 times in the last two years one day my son was in town and he told me not too take it back to the dealer I was very skeptical of him and why he was so adamant about that and well he installed something called the adjustable cam gear sprocket and I had no problems since 2018 I had to take the truck in for the inspection and good old Ford tried to “fix” what doesn’t need to be fixed that tech didn’t like me but oh well
