Did my 19 350 Super Duty diesel at 42K and replaced with BANKS and used Amsoil 75W-140. Very happy! Also replaced front differential with PPE diff and used Amsoil again of 80W90. Really like the collapsible bags to get all the oil out. Great video and service tips. Thanks! 🇺🇸
Banks did a great video on the issue with flat back diff covers
Agreed. I got a lot of info from their content.
I use the same cover but I chose to use the factory gasket. In my experience they are great. Never deal with leaks from them. As long as they don’t get damaged.
This
Stock or Banks for me, but this diff cover looks good too
None do what the Banks do. It’s what you want if you tow a lot.
Next, watch Ford Tech Makuloco about why you should use the Ford specified fluid…
I like Makuloco as well, I have serviced everything on my 2021 based on his videos.
Can you share, Reader's Digest version, why?
My mom's boyfriend put 80w90 in his 9.75 that called for 75w140...locked that bitch up...starved pinion bearing. He paid me 750 to swap in a junkyard axle so whatever but I would always use exactly what it calls for! Side note it was a 1999 truck and it had a metal tag on one of the diff cover bolts that clearly said 75w140 ONLY.
man, I Haven't seen your channel in 2 years. Great y'all still have your truck. Never new they had something like this in the aftermarket.
Stick around a while. Thanks for watching. F150’s get just about everything in the aftermarket.
Geez. Some of the comments you guys have to deal with. This cover looks awesome. I’ve been wanting a curved cover and haven’t been able to find a decent one. The FOrd racing one is nice but that cast iron ain’t doing nothing for cooling. Nice job guys! Hope to see you running around Knoxville one of these days.
Thanks man! We don’t worry too much about what people say on the internet.
I've experienced a few diffs that take some time for the axel tubes to fill with oil, typically i like to fill them up, put the plug in and walk away for 5 mins, then come and fill it up again until its full, repeat until no more oil is dripping back out (stock fill plug). Great video!
Don't forget to crack the fill plug BEFORE you take the diff covers off if you're reusing the stock cover. You'll be up shit creek if you drain your oil and can't refill it due to a corroded fill plug.
yea, what he said.
Bingo PAL 💯👍😎
You obviously don’t have a breaker bar and cheater pipe
@@eddiearchuleta615 I do have both but I've done shit the hard way for too long in life and learned to take a few extra seconds to save a headache later.
This happened to me on a 20 year old Illinois blazer. Couldn’t break the fill plug loose, ended up stripping the square peg. Had to fill it through the vent tube. Was thinking about making my own hole on the cover.
solid video!!
Good video guys!
Thanks!
I see you like to live dangerously!
My 19 ranger has drain plugs on the opposite side of the axles. Just below the fill plugs.
I would pull the original rear differential fill plug and clean the magnet on it and reinstall it .
Not a bad idea.
I have a 21 f150 with about 40K miles on it. I just did my transfer case fluid change, which i barely use, and it was super dark. (ford wanted 400 dollars for it, i did it for 30 dollars including the pump) I was planning on doing my rear and front diff's and this video is excellent. I am a big fan of the gasket on my model vs the silicone on the earlier models. no need to wait for the gasket to dry. I will be going back with the stock cover until banks makes one for the f150 tho.
I did front and rear differential at 46,000 miles. Also did my transfer case as well as a transmission flush. Will drop transmission pan and change filter at 60,000 if not before.
Yup, easy to do. I changed all my fluids at break in (40,000) even antifreeze…all Amsoil
@@mcmuskie2563what did you guys use for front/back differentials, 75w90? Ford states we have a non limited slip differential unless you have the elocker, so what's the use of the friction modifier everyone adds to their gear oil? I'm assuming having the limited slip additive doesn't hurt a thing tho..
@@hansvanhouten1781 I believe that valvoline 75w90 he used already comes with the friction modifier just in case, BUT and I might be wrong here, I don’t think the e locker style on these need friction modifier, I thought only the raptors have a limited slip on the front differential that needs the friction modifier.
Don’t ever flush it lol. I’d rather do multiple pan drops than flush these.
Just had both diffs checked at 130k. Oil still ok so Ford's 150k is spot on. The transfer case needed new fluid tho. It was really dark. I'm surprised you didn't do your transfer case. My F150 is stock....
The diffs might still have fluid in them, but where was it going to go? Was it clean and still within spec? That being said, I'll be doing the transfer case and trans in a video soon. I already have parts on hand. Thanks for watching!
150k interval is nuts. 40k is probably early but hey, these fluids are cheap and differentials are expensive.
that smell , good vid
Ooooh that smell!
Ummmm no there’s documented 3-400k mile f150 with stock diff you don’t need to replace a diff at 150k
10 minutes after servicing both diffs suffered catastrophic failure 😂
I brushed Black Tremclad on my rear axel when it was new, still looks new.
I did mine at 30000 and then again at 60000 along with the front Diff fluid I do have magnet in mine. Wish Dorman would come out with a reasonable Rear diff cover for the 8.8 12 bolt over 300 dollars for a rear diff cover just to get a drain is more then I am willing to pay. Try a biscuit on a angle die grinder on the machine service cleans up like brand new.
Thanks! Did these changes a few months ago. My yard still smells like death afterwards due to some spills lol
Ya that fluid stinks like hell
Would you recommend using any cleaning agent like brake cleaner and wiping it all out with paper towels? Thanks, nice video!
No…just a wipe with lint free paper towels…the red or Blu ones
Looks like an open differential? Maybe time to upgrade to a detroit truetrac or detroit locker. Amsoil severe gear lube is best differential gear oil
It is a electronic locking diff
I always enjoy your videos guys! Nice work, appreciate it.......
Should have got the ford performance rear differential cover
Front one too
@@mrhossola7137 didn’t know they had a front one
@@qwkartist Spicer makes em for ford performance front is 1002-3538, rear is 1002-3539, half the price of ford branded one and identical
I don’t see a 12 bolt speed lab diff cover for my super 8 2016 f150 xlt.
At $370.00 + TAX & whatever else, I like it, However I am an OEM Kinda GUY and at this price point I would "THINK" That this Company could at the very LEAST Include the "3" Stand Off Bolts that fit for the Brake Line Routing. (This is just me Guy's), But I just can't and won't Buy this for that Very Reason, And Just in case you have a TRUCK that is "Still The Under Factory"???? If you read their Disclosure, It "WILL VOID" your Factory Warranty??? (Hence, the Stand Off Bolts for the Brake Line Routing), Seem's rather Stupid to me that you can buy something to "Improve" upon the Look's AND The Function (Like Gayle Bank's) Unit, and it VOIDS your Warranty???? STUPID. Nice Piece, But a No Go for me. Sorry.
Love my 2019 F150 5.0 but I must say Ford did two really stupid things on this model, 1 use a plastic oil and transmission pan, WTF! 2 would it have been too difficult to add a drian bolt on the front diff cover? Comon Ford get real here.
reminds me of my boss on my first job bought a heavy-duty pickup for hauling supplies and snowplowing his driveway. so he had garage change rear diff and they forgot to put plug in or tighten it so his truck sprayed all the oil out as he drove on 3 lane highway till rear seized up right in middle of road he tried to move over but truck stopped between two lanes blocking both and it could not be moved or pushed off the road quite a traffic mess that caused till tow truck got him off the road.
Question for you on the Spelab diff cover.. you have any problems receiving this? I’ve been waiting over a month for mine and they have no phone number and aren’t responding to email. Thanks
No, but I got mine before this video obviously. It's evidently done pretty well and sold a lot of units. They've been working on keeping up with demand pretty hard. Message me here again if you don't get it soon. I'll reach out to them and make sure you're taken care of. I have nothing to do with this company by the way, but I'll do what I can to help.
@@BackroadDriver appreciate any help, it’s just as I said over a month and no response from them. I know you have no affiliation with them, so I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you
Did mine at 40,000 as well.
Oil is expensive. Around $7.00 per quart. I forget now, but you can Google amount needed. I also brushed Trem Clad onto the rear axle housing, still looks good at 110,000
Man, how is 7$ expensive when you only need to touch it every few years? 🤷🏻♂️
Gale Banks will inform you as to why the factory diff cover is the best. He wanted to sell his own so he tested them. It has to do with the fluid getting slung correctly.
I have an 06 with an 8.8 and it's says to change ever 30k in owners manual.
Keep them videos coming guys
Factory OEM spec is 33 lb. ft. on the rear differential bolts.
I have Never seen one come loose like that
when i changed mine on my ranger i used AMSOIL price was more but the protection is most important.
$380.00 for a Diff cover is excessive priced ?
you dont need lock tight on the bolts, and why didn't ford put an anti clunk spring in the diff?
Glad i seen this video im new to the truck world and never knew anything about this. I have a 23 stx eco boost but only have 7k miles on it.Thank you for making this video
What happened to the links you said you would put in the description? Am I missing something?
Check it now. I didn't have the links uploaded when the video went live.
@@BackroadDriver Thank You!!
Yup i do it every 60,000km with trans as well
Ya me too, I changed my tranny fluid after I bought a pump for $90,00
and sucked it out. Used Utube to show the process. Tranny fluid had grey particles in it. Change tranny fluid and filter, immediately the shifting was smoother with no hard interruptions some times.
Cover is sold out. I would have cleaned the threads with a tap as well.
Yeah, I'm in contact with the manufacturer. They are working on getting more in stock unfortunately. Bummer for them and everyone that wants one and I guess.
Good idea, I recently bought a Tap & Die set off Amazon, it’s so handy!
Thanks for the video, it's very well explained!😍
I put a mag hytec on mine and royal purple
Mag Hytec has been on the market for years and is/was a top seller. I've seen a few videos showing the oil flow to bearings not being as consistent. Just check and change your fluid often. It's cheap and easy insurance.
Would anyone know if that billet cover fit on my 2019 Ford Transit 350HD EcoBoost 3.5L V6? Or which one I should get for my vehicle?
Any issue with the diff cover? I would love the drain, but I haven’t seen any in the wild.
It's been great so far. I've towed with it several times and the truck is obviously built with a blower and built transmission. I would say it's a pretty good buy for the money.
i tow a lot hauling shop machinery, trucks and tractors. Have the same rear. I've got 382k miles on it. As well as the 6 speed trans. Great drive train. i also drilled my front diff I the bottom and installed a plug.
First baby, love the truck!
Right on!
Thanks for the Video . I'm picking up my first 4x4 2020 f150 xlt sport on Friday.
I've been checking out maintenance videos.
Saw this love the cover mod...
I'll definitely change the fluids before 150miles or 241000 kilometres.
Thanks from Toronton Canada
I purchased a Differential cover from SPELAB and I need to get ahold of them by phone because they do not respond to email, Do you have a contact Phone #?
NO APPLICATION FOR 8.8 SUPER DIFF. COVER. 12 BOLT
Are you changing to look cool ?
Cause I don’t see the benefit unless you own a F250 and tow heavy weight all the time..
Looks like that diff cover company watched Banks video and made a copy and it’s a certainty that they didn’t do any real engineering.
Typical Chinese crap.
2018 2.7L how do i know if i have limited slip or not
Ford only sells an open diff or an electronic locking diff from the factory. Limited slip on the trucks are aftermarket only.
@BackroadDriver thank you so much !
awesome , thank you so much !
I do all rear diff and transfer case at 40k EXCEPT not the front diff. Would it be an issue to take it to 60k or 75k if you rarely if ever use the 4WD ?? Literally my 4WD has maybe 10 miles on it maximum ! My F150 is not an AWD.
Fluid is cheap but you could open the fill plug and check the color. Also good to put in 4WD every now and then to lube it up also put in Low a few times a year for same reason
Will the lub locker gasket work for a 21 f150 rear differential?
I’d take the ford to the junk yard after 150,000 miles !
Nice cover but damn it's $270!!!
Manufacturers should discontinue the hex Allen, and use only torx.
What happened with the line across the top of the diff that was attached to studs? Thanks
I zip tied that line to the hardline above the diff. I might source some longer studs. These lines mount differently on almost every vehicle no matter which rear end you have. I assume that's why most companies don't include new studs, just new regular hardware. I wouldn't recommend trying to reuse the three factory studs. If you torque them down I feel it will strip the threads in the housing.
@@BackroadDriverthanks love your channel guys
Can you tell me what those tires are and the size? Those are beautiful.
I replaced my super 8.8 with B&M differential cover. Same awesome features your replacement has. I also used the lube locker gasket. However, I use nothing but Amsoil products, so I went with the severe gear lube.
Nice choices. Love Amsoil products. I plan on changing fluid often enough it shouldn't be an issue and keep costs down. Brad has a b&m on his super 8.8.
@@BackroadDriver Also I forgot to add that the B&M holds more fluid, and has carrier support bolts. Helps keep things centered up for launching!
P.S. I love your truck!
changed mines at 125k for first time in my 2013 5.0. Fluid was dirty but not black. Gears looked good. No scarring or marring of gears and teeth on gears were perfect. Measured almost exactly 3.1 quarts drained and put same back in of Motorcraft gear oil. Did not use permatex green but a Felpro gasket from Advanced Auto and no leaks after several miles of driving. Very easy process so do not be intimidated.
Might do this today on my 2017 f 150 but going to keep same cover until later, I got the 3.5eb should I do it?
Anyone do this without lifting the truck up?
Yep easy peasy
I was looking for vid on just this and even better we got the same diff cover
What about your transfer case?
I did that service in a future video. Here is the link. ruclips.net/video/C5CQERLNlts/видео.htmlsi=pHQUCL7XmXQWvhC_
All the maintenance that we do nowadays is BS back in the day my dad‘s there they do nothing on a rear end the coolant transmission fluid brake fluid all that bullshit. All they did is change your oil and the car ran forever now all of a sudden every mile hour this mile this mile you gotta change this this this bullshit, it falls to the ground and buy new one
Well everything’s made in China and the replacement parts are junk, plus the manufacturer wants to sell trucks. I hate problems and I’m happy to over maintain all my toys.
So what’s the fluid you guys would recommend if I didn’t tow and only did payload weight or minimum and washboard roads when hiking. NH so the temps can be 0 for 3 months plus heavy snowstorm and 100F in the summer.
I would use the off the shelf Valvoline mentioned in the video. It's all you need unless you're going to tow in the desert.
@@BackroadDriver thanks man that’s what I was thinking.
Thanks guys!
You bet!
So whenever hit 40k can change it? Also that diff cover fit the f150 22 XLT ?
You can change the fluid at any mileage you choose. The point is to get it done early.
I will have changed mine at least 3 times by the time 150K rolls around. Your truck could have a 9.75 or an 8.8 diff. I have a link to both types in the description. You'll need to figure out which one you have.
@@BackroadDriver now mine mileage is 21k so don't need to change that diff cover right or waiting until 40k then change it ?
I would wait till 40 to 50k.
@@BackroadDriver also 1 more question so can i using the W75-90 on that brand for mine 22XLT 3.5Eco too ?
Where’s the Reaper Hawk?
Parked in the garage. We may do a full update soon
on those f-150's the front diff oil is gray like that from factory. little less dark tho
No it ain't. It's oil / honey colored.
When are you guys going to get back on the bronco interior?
Do you need to put any sealant or rubber gasket when putting back on the front diff plug?
You could clean the plug up a bit and put on some Teflon pipe tape. I wouldn't use anything silicone. A small amount of blue loctite maybe but Teflon tape is what I would recommend.
Love the grass roots video content
Thanks!
Have to replace the truck at 150k. Jk
Ford did us wrong on the front diff, they should have put a drain plug at least 😂
Make yer own🙄
Have you guys had any issues with your big brake kit and the e booster??
I went with a different company and have been having brake lock up
I had a couple abs issues early. I've not had any issues in years now. I just changed pads a few days ago and still good.
@@BackroadDriver what did you do to fix your abs issues if you dont.mind me asking?
I made sure the system was bled well. It actually seemed to be fine but it might have had one more error after that and I've been trouble free since. I know that's not a great answer cuz it doesn't help but that's what happened. Some people continue having issues and some don't.
Where’s the link?
Check it now. I was slacking.
Swag Performance has the same one!
Hopefully they're in stock. Spelab is working on getting more in inventory.
40k is very early unless you tow a lot but no way should anyone go over 100k no matter how easy they drive.
I tow quite a bit and the truck is supercharged so I figured that warranted a very early fluid change. I agree you could go a little longer. Every 50 to 60k sounds like a nice sweet spot.
Are you changing to look cool ?
Cause I don’t see the benefit unless you own a F250 and tow heavy weight all the time..
Yes I tow a lot and my truck has 800 wheel horsepower well over double the factory number. When you make more power you have to add more cooling if you want longevity. And yes I am cool so I'm not actually upgrading to look cool because I already was cool. 😂
Good video
Great video Boyz!
Appreciate it!
Great video thank you
The Sterling 9.75 rear axle the very bottom bolt is a drain plug on the pan unfortunately the 8.8 super don't have that
Yer a bit underfull at that amount bud, way to keep these 9.75's alive is slightly overfill it by around a half qt.
🫤 my 2014 held little over 3 quarts
