These, and the EH's, had a nice idle. You would know, without even seeing it, exactly what sort of car it was by the door squeak too. The old clutch pedal squawk as you let it out was another iconic sound. Nice to see one without being butchered. I reckon you appreciate the unmolested ones more as you get older, and we all like the cars we grew up with the most.
Listen to that Holden diff whine. You could always tell a Holden was coming towards you and slowing down because of that whine. I love 'em all...all the old Holdens. And now I hate GM US for killing Holden as an Australian manufacturer. Holden will never be the same again. Vale, GMH..."Australia's own car".
I miss my old H.R. my dad brought it for me for $400 late 70's... someone ran into the back of it while parked out the front of house... was devestated... being female easy to drive column shift than four on the floor.... only thing... no aircon used to sweat it out.....
Mate, very sweet video. Like jumping in the time machine. No radio, three on the tree, nice hard clutch and fresh air blowing in through the quarter windies... I love the trademark whine of the HR as you put the power on in each gear. Magic . Jesus, it makes me want to start smoking Winnie Reds again.
nice holden..reminds me of growin up back in the Caribbean...my dads friend used to have a hx kingswood sedan...another friend had a hx or hz ute with a Nissan LD28 diesel...they are kool cars! love the old 3 speed column gearbox
Ripper! Mate used to have a blue panel van back in the mid 70’s. Now that was an amazing car! Beautiful. Loved it and loved driving it when we went away on holidays. Even slept in it 👍🏽 shit load o’ room. Will never forget 😄
When radial ply tyres came out, the older cars, designed in the times of cross-ply tyres were not much fond of them. A lot of hard noise came through the front suspensions which then moved on steel threaded bushes not modern rubber or synthetic bushes.
Also. With the old cross ply tyres, i found my steering was lighter compared to my first fitting of radial tyres.(1978). So over the years, as cars got bigger and engines too, we then progressed onto (needing) power steering. Pus of course they did handle better with radial tyres.
A nice real classic you have there mate and so good to see it being driven by someone who appreciates classics , not like those young wankers who flog the crap out of them , they don't deserve to own 1 :)
fantastic just bought an original but havent got it yet cant wait for the whine that i remember they made when taking off i see you have an "optional" radio must be "rich bastards" great video
Awesome ride! I wish I could say that I've seen an HR Holden of my own. I remember reading somewhere that they were exported to the USA. I've yet to see one. Unless they were re-badged as a Chevrolet Nova, etc.
In 1996, I did see a light blue one east of Los Angeles in the citrus country which was then being cut up into house blocks. I did not initially take much notice until I remembered I was on left-hand drive roads and not in Australia.
It is so funny how the HR in the 80's had those sounds, smells and rattles. When I got in this car for the first timeI was laughing at the way the model had identicle features that had grown on the car as it aged.
@ihaig72 first thing that came back to me when I got in this car was the smell then all the rattles that were in them in the 70,s. Just a bit more obvious as the cars get older

I wonder if this car has king pin front end (as I know early 1960s Holdens did) and Girling PowerStop brake assist, like my car ? My car sounds exactly the same ))) (not a Holden though)
ya wanna know how to adjust ya brakes? just revers fast for about 10 meters and hit the brakes hard,,,do this 3 or 4 times it re sets and readjusts the brakes,I do my old girl all the time usually after ever2000 miles,as for ther play in steering, undo the nut on the steering box tighten srew up but not to tight, this will get rid of the play for ya
Please do not swear in the HR Holden. (there is no synchro) Swearing only began in Australia in the late '60s with the HT model. By the HJ, it was just F**k, this, and f**k that. Fish and chips everyday. Shocking.

What a classic. Old stick shift, no power steering on that old classic eh. Lots of noises in these old cars.
love the old column shift
Beautiful cars, I plan on getting one some day. Saw a white HR in Chatswood tonight, maybe it was you!

Thanks for posting the video. Outstanding to see and hear these rare cars in action. Would love to see more of it.

Hey done this with my 2001 Astra. Had a HR Premier with manul gear box. The HR had ball joint, some of the earily HD were fitted with king pins...
