Growing up in New Zealand the Falcon coupes were pretty common. If you couldn't afford a Mustang you got one of these instead. You could still pick them up for reasonable prices in the early Nineties. All the classics went a bit mad in the early 2000s, then settled after 2008 crash, but by that stage Falcon coupes had become rare. They are effectively gone from NZ now, I think the Aussies came and got a few of them then the Americans caught on. You can see them at car shows but they hardly ever come up for sale, when they do they cost an order of magnitude more than a Mustang.

It was ford global styling at the time. While many cues came from Europe (the earlier XC Fairmont is a lot like the mid 70s Granada too) the side pressing style and swage lines on the XD were also shared with the Fox body Fairmont/LTD in the US. Even the early Fox mustangs had a similar swage. XF tail lights and the Fox mustang update tail lights are also similar in style too.

Laurie Moran, playing Jacko's partner Bazza, played Corporal Doyle in The Cowra Breakout. Doyle was the mini-series stand-in for Private Ralph Jones, a WW1 vet too old for frontline combat in WW2, but assigned to guard prisoners. He and Private Benjamin Gower were posthumously awarded the George Medal for manning their Vickers Gun until overrun by escaping Japanese prisoners, at which point Gower removed the breech block of the Vickers and hid it, rendering it useless to the escaping prisoners. @davidcarr2649 Год назад +6

The planning and development of the XD began in 1976 when Ford Australia decided to use the floorpans of the XC to base the new all Australian built Falcon chassis upon. The XD shares only the floorpans in the (smaller on the outside, but just as big on the inside) chassis. Apart from the floorpans, the XD is a whole new car. Of course, there were a few shared items otherwise like, rear vision mirrors, indicator and wiper stalks, plus a few more cost saving bits. There's even parts that are used in all 7 generations of the Falcon 1960 - 2016 and are easily interchangeable.

The XD brought two innovations for an Aussie car, one that would be the norm for the future, plastic fuel tank and moulded plastic bumper for the front clip which enhanced the Grenada based look. The Granada looks wrong to my eyes with it's steel bumper.
Yet people keep thinking Holden was the bees knees when they were generally behind Ford in design and usually played catch up if at all.
Plastic bumpers, alloy head engine, over head cam sixes, sixes that remained home grown where Holden used one from another car maker altogether getting unearned praise and then relying on an American GM division for the 3800 V6, yet claim to be Aussie as Aboriginal art!
