    In the world of Mad Max, even one of the most iconic movies car's in the Last of the V8 Pursuit Specials had its start elsewhere prior and has had its share of changes over the many years since it first rolled onto our screes.
    Starting off as a stock Australian Ford Falcon XB GT, this muscle car and movie icon was given a star treatment for its 1979 film debut and has gone on to be the ultimate dream car of many fans over the years, becoming perhaps the ultimate V8 police car in its sleek black appearance.
    Here at MFP we take a look into the build and changes of George Miller's Mad Max drive of The Interceptor and try and give as best a detailed documentation of what transformed this 70s Aussie car into the icon it has become in the motor and movie world.

    Back in the 70’s here in rural Victoria, Australia I was a teenager. I never forget when my late father came home driving a Ford XA Superbird coupe. Yes before anyone says they didn’t exist, they did! Dad’s had a white body with a deep blue metallic bonnet, deep blue matching paint along the sills etc & a deep blue falcon “superbird” decal on each rear quarter panel. It ran a 302. The John Goss came out after this model. Anyway going to school when Mad Max came out, even my school mates thought it was a cool car. When I was 19 I “almost” bought an XB Ford Falcon GT COUPE! It was mine to buy but I was a so called responsible apprentice!🤪🤬 I do now own a ‘68 Ford Mustang GT390, which I’m pretty happy with!👍🏼😎

      Simple engines are easier to maintain. Back then, there were not that many 4 cylinder engines that had speed unlike today. And now, modern engines are so complicated due to electronics and on board computers, the basic V8 or the higher performance one is the difference between owning a .22 pistol with a 44 Magnum. It's like watching those videos of cars sitting for 40 years, then getting started. Old engines are just so much easier to fix.

So that means that somewhere during Beyond Thunderdome, his Interceptor exists, but off screen.

    Dunno if this has already been said but the Interceptor DOES appear in Beyond Thunderdome- although its mainly just the chassis and cab. I wish they called more attention to it but it looks like Max was trying to get the parts together to rebuild the Interceptor and had to haul it around on a makeshift wagon being dragged by camels.

    • @MFPMapFilmProductions
      @MFPMapFilmProductions  Год назад

      Unfortunately it is not. As much as I wish it were, the chassis that Max is towing at the beginning is loosely identified as either a ZG Ford Fairlane, or a P5 LTD as the body is that of a four door, yet it is very close to the style of Ford Max was driving in the beginning of MM1, there is a slight possibility it could be an XB or XA according to the cockpit dash, but most seem to lean towards a ZG due to a longer wheelbase. There are no fully confirmed photos to date to confirm it's origin of model. But it was a 4 door.

    • @NikkiWrightVGM
      @NikkiWrightVGM Год назад

      @@MFPMapFilmProductions Beyond Thunderdome was an American production, wasn't it? They maybe tried to get the correct Falcon XB but with it being a rare care by that point they probably figured with the state the car would be in for the Camel Wagon most viewers won't be able to tell it apart with an XA body.
      Some might view it differently but I think the car chassis was supposed to represent the Black on Black with Max scavenging for parts to repair it like in the later comic series of the 2015 video game.

    • @MFPMapFilmProductions
      @MFPMapFilmProductions  Год назад

      @@NikkiWrightVGM This was still an Australian production, just with more US financial backing from WB. In 1984 when production started, the Ford XB was not rare at all as it was only a 10 year old car and sold a lot of units and was relitivly cheap to get. My dad was able to get my older brother an XB sedan (basic model with a six in it) for about $400 in the early 90s.
      In the comic book which was not canon within the storyline here when this was being made, the pursuit special was elsewhere and this was a different transport. With such a fire from part 2 after the crash, there would be no trace of the original dashboard left.

    I love the car. And I loved Fury Road. My only gripe was that there wasn't much of the Interceptor. I really want the Furiosa film to stay true to her in Fury road, just kicking all of the arse and taking all of the names. But her vehicle of choice will be where i will judge it i think. As i hear it is a prequal. So maybe its an unmodified or less modified War Rig? But I want the Interceptor to live on the same way the Falcon does in new star wars (regardless of how i dislike the new films) I do want her to also have a memorable vehicle and sidearm. Max had the interceptor and the sawn off. Seeing her use an explosive scrap crossbow it would be mint to see her using that for both stealth and large explosives as a sidearm to say the SKS that we also see her use. But the car/bike/truck will be the real deciding factor for me.

      No, there has been discussions about it, though the shell is part of the Ford lineup of 1972-1976 due to the dashboard. However it is based on a four door sadan model, some suspect due to the steering wheel it could be either a ZF or ZG Fairlane or a P5 LTD. @@MFPMapFilmProductions i always figured G Miller had it in headcanon to be Max's old car or the one he would "rebuild" as a "new" interceptor to explain the cars existence in subsequent stories. i.e. the interceptor showing up in fury road, and now possibly in furiosa as well, even though it gets destroyed... seemingly over and over...

      @@russellknight5288 I wanted it to be that way. Where Max was so attached to his black on black he went back after the events of MM2 and salvaged what he could. But alas, not to be. But at least Max is a Ford man through and through and the shell of choice was similar to his old MFP yellow Interceptor.

    On May 22, 1982, I turned 11 years old. My brother took me to see The Road Warrior, and it blew my mind. I was so awestruck by what I'd just seen, he turned me around and bought us another set of tickets to see it again.
    That was when I fell in love with cars in general, muscle cars in particular, and especially the MAD MAX INTERCEPTOR!
    A few years later, when the original Mad Max movie came out on VHS, I was able to more appreciate what went into the car's build and Max's previous adventures while driving it.
    Now, the man called Max, and his car, exist only in my dreams.

    Not Satin Black; It was Matte Black.
    Paint scheme
    The paint scheme was described as "Black on Black" by the movie’s art director, Jon Dowding. Ray interpreted it as gloss and matte black similar to the factory XB GT design, differing only in swooping up from the rear wheel arch to follow the line of the rear spoiler. The paint was done by Rob Smythe, Beckerley's friend from a former place of employment. Mad Max Fandom site

    Fury Road happened before Thunderdome. Thats why he doesnt have the Interceptor in Thunderdome but he still has his jacket which he then lost. Hes older with gray hair in Thunderdome and more talkative after getting redemption with Furiosa. The Fury Road Interceptor was the last time he rebuilt it, trying to keep a part of his past. Remember in the first movie, they told Max it was built from scratch piece by piece. He did the same after Road Warrior and rebuilt the Interceptor that we see in the beginning of Fury Road. He never rebuilt it after Fury Road because he found redemption from his past. Anything in Thunderdome is just random meaningless transportation to him compared to the Interceptor that he moved on from. This is my favorite and most logical and chronological theory of the Interceptor's timeline 🤔✌🏽

    I was 17 when Mad Max came out and 19 when Mad Max 2 came out and us young blokes were hooked on it. I guess it shows the difference between Australians and Americans as non of us would be seen dead driving a copy of the interceptor around. The tag “wanker” would quickly be applied to you. Now XA, XB, XC coupes are so hard to find here because so many are being shipped to the US so people can have their own to drive. As young rev heads we recognised all the cars in the film and most of us had similar Aussie muscle cars so we loved it and felt that it was a film made by Aussies for Aussies never thinking how big it would become. A bit like AC/DC really. Back in the ‘80s Australia wasn’t known for exporting entertainment. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺

      Fury Road is weird in my book, as a stand alone movie I give it 4 out of 5 stars, but as a Mad Max movie I only give it 2, that's not because Mel Gibson isn't in it or that there's timeline problems or anything like that, it's the cinematography, if doesn't feel like it's in the same universe because of that, there's too many cut shots, even in the Road Warrior there was only 30 some, but in Fury Road there's over 200.
      Mad Max, The Road Warrior and Thunderdome all have the same look and feel that leaves you with the impression that they were all made by the same movie makers but Fury Road in comparison feels like it was made by entirely different people from an entirely different studio system, like it's an American or British film and not something born of the Australian New Wave Cinema Movement.
