  • Original sin has marred our nature. We are depraved. But how depraved are we? Are we simply less than perfect? What kind of improvements can we make within ourselves to change sin’s effect? In this message, Dr. Sproul looks at the distinctive doctrine of Reformed theology that is often misunderstood-“Total Depravity.”
This is the 7th in a series of messages by Dr. Sproul on Reformed theology. See other videos in the series: • What Is Reformed Theol...

These videos are the true blessing. R.C. Sproul is one of my favourite pastors-teachers. But we definitely are Christians firstly and then Calvinists. Knowledge is so important, but debating with the Arminian bretheren with love is more important. Greetings from Ukraine (Evangelical Reformed Presbyterian church of Odesa).

I believe I’d say it another way. To be a Christian is to be a Calvinist, even if you don’t hold to it intellectually because we are saved by a God who saves unconditionally, in light of our total depravity, and will persevere His people who He has secured from the foundation of the world. Completely understand what you mean though, and agree, we must be patient and gentle ESPECIALLY to Arminian brothers. It’s sad when we don’t, and should expect hostility from the other side.

RC says that regeneration precedes faith. But
      Regeneration happens after faith....
Jhn 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
All that believed would receive the Spirit after Jesus’ resurrection and ascension....
Jhn 14: 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
Jhn 15: 26 ¶ But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
Jhn 16: 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
The Holy Spirit is first given here....
Jhn 20: 22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
So they didn’t receive the Holy Spirit until after the resurrection as Jesus stated in John 7. That’s well after the disciples believed, and many others as well......
Jhn 2: 23 ¶ Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, in the feast day, many believed in his name, when they saw the miracles which he did.
Luk 7: 50 ¶ And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace.
Even after the resurrection, faith still preceded regeneration.....
Eph 1: 13 ¶ In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
Acts 5:32 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.
Just to clarify what regeneration is. It is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit....
Rom 8: 9 ¶ But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
      Spiritual life happens after belief.....
Jhn 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
The disciples hadn’t received this life before the resurrection of Christ.....
Jhn 14:19 ¶ Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
      Peter hadn’t yet been converted.....
Luk 22:32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
(Matt 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.)

@@evanu6579 regeneration is not the indwelling of the Spirit in the very narrow sense. Regenerate means to revive which is done only and alone by the Spirit. Since we are dead in spirit, the Holy Spirit revives our dead spirit as it indwells us. It is after our hearts of stone are turned to hearts of flesh known as regeneration that we have faith to believe. Paul says in Romans that NO ONE SEEKS GOD, NO ONE UNDERSTANDS. So yes regeneration precedes faith and by precedes we are not talking of one minute, we are talking split seconds. It's almost impossible to draw a line between regeneration and having faith.

    • @evanu6579
      @evanu6579 5 лет назад +7

      Addjoa preko baah
So you just ignore all of the passages that clearly state that regeneration happens after faith because you think Romans 3 means that the natural man cannot seek God?
Paul is not saying that at all. The Jews thought that they were better than the Gentiles because they had the law.....
Rom 2: 17 ¶ Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,
      18 And knowest his will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;
23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?
24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
Rom 3: 1 ¶ What advantage then hath the Jew? or what profit is there of circumcision?
2 Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.
      9 ¶ What then? are we better than they? No, in no wise: for we have before proved both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under sin;
Paul asks what advantages did the Jew have over the Gentile? Many advantages by being given the law. But what did it profit them?
He then cites OT passages to prove that they weren’t any better. Though they had the law, yet they’re as guilty as the Gentile. All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. He’s proving universal sin not total inability.
Psa 14: 1 ¶ [[To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.]] The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
2 The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the LORD.
Though the Jews knew God they refused to recognize Him as God and worshipped the creature rather than the Creator. God gave them over to their vile affections. Those who say there is no God don’t seek after God. These are fools who should know better.
Rom 3: 19 ¶ Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
      Context is important my friend.
      God bless

REFUTING THE FALSE DOCTRINES OF CALVINISM; "Total Depravity."
Total depravity is the "T" in TULIP, and is the first point of Calvinism. The fall of Adam and Eve, Genesis 3, seriously hurt humanity. "Through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all mankind, because all sinned" See; Romans 5:12.
"Total" Corruptness; Calvinists believe the natural human condition is total depravity. They claim that human beings are; "utterly indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, cannot not understand God or act in faith toward God..."
Calvinists also claim; "the man or woman who is dead in sin hates God, and his "carnal mind" is under all circumstances and with all non-born again people "at enmity against God." "His will is stubbornly steeled against God."
      >> What Jesus stated about "Total Depravity;"
Jesus did NOT consider that all men were utterly depraved indisposed, disabled, and made opposite to all good, and wholly inclined to all evil, etc. He could see some good in people that was still pure and some faculties untouched by sin. Jesus spoke of a man "in whom there is no deceit" in John 1:47. That was Nathanael, a perfectly honest man, proving that human beings can have unspoiled faculties...
"Jesus saw Nathanael coming to Him, and He says concerning him, "Behold, truly an Israelite, in whom there is no deceit." - John 1:47
      >> Other examples from scripture of men acting in faith, doing good and pleasing God, exactly the opposite of the false claims of Calvinism and the false Calvinist doctrine of "Total Depravity"...
      1. Job - "And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?" - Job 1:8
      2. Enoch - "And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters: And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years: And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him." - Genesis 5:22 "By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God." - Hebrews 11:5
      3. Noah - "These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God." - Genesis 6:9
      4. Joseph - Joseph trusted God no matter how bad his situation got. He was a skilled, conscientious administrator. He saved not only his own people but all of Egypt from starvation. "By faith Joseph, when his end was near, spoke about the exodus of the Israelites from Egypt and gave instructions concerning the burial of his bones." - Hebrews 11:22
      5. Daniel - Daniel chose not to defile himself with the King’s food upon his arrival in Babylon-the food would have rendered him ceremonially unclean according to the Torah (See; Daniel 1:8). Toward the end of his life he continues to pray to God and not the king, even though it puts him in danger (See; Daniel 6:13). In the 14th chapter of Ezekiel, God uses Daniel, Noah, and Job as examples of extremely righteous men. He’s painting a picture to say that if God chooses to destroy a nation, it gets destroyed-and even three uber-righteous people like Daniel couldn’t save their children. You can read the whole story in Ezekiel 14:12-23.
      6. In Hebews chapter eleven we see a list of un-born again, un-regenerated people who acted in great faith toward God. People such as Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Sara, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Rahab, etc. All of the aforementioned people, contrary to Calvinist false doctrine of the "Total Depravity," acted in great faith toward God.
      >>> As you can see, the Calvinist false doctrine of "Total Depravity" is not supported by scripture being refuted by many Biblical examples.

Why do we avoid telling arminians to explain these verses?
      Romans 8:28-33
"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose."
"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren."
"Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."
"What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?"
"He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?"
"Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth."
(Then in the very next chapter...)
      Romans 9:11-24
"(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)"
"It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger."
"As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated."
"What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid."
"For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion."
"So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that showeth mercy."
"For the Scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth."
"Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth."
"Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will?"
"Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus?"
"Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?"
"What if God, willing to show his wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:"
"And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,"
"Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?"
(Or even simple ones like this, since they always hold up the calling of the gospel apart from God's sovereign election...)
      Matthew 22:14
"For many are called, but few are chosen."
(Could predestination and election be any clearer?)

As cute as babies are laughing at someone getting hurt is not pure. Crying to manipulate someone to hold you is not pure. That is why the virgin birth is so key for Jesus in being our savior. He was not born of the flesh "in sin" which is why he was tempted as us but never fell. R.C. Sproul once described how he taught a course in theology at a college where the students did not generally come from a reformed background. He began by giving an exposition on total depravity, and then asked the students if they were persuaded this was the biblical view of human sinfulness. Everyone in the class raised their hands, and he wrote down the number of students who agreed. As the course went on and he taught the other letters the students became uncomfortable, and the number who expressed confidence in total depravity steadily decreased. His point was that if total depravity is properly understood, the other four points fall in line, they become corollaries of the first point. So I suspect three point Calvinism would not have made sense to him.

first He gives you the new birth. a man must be born again in order to see the kingdom of God. holy God does this (we don't know how exactly. by His perfect supernatural will).
then He gives you the faith to believe unto the Lord Jesus Christ. you have been called, and predestined, and justified. then the process of sanctification begins. that could take many forms and times. it could take years as in my case or a few minutes, as the thief on the cross. it actually takes a lifetime.
it is sometimes not easy to spot a true christian because their sanctification may take a while. they may be a baby christian for a while (me). you will spot the christian by the fruit. so if someone who claims to be a christian doesn't believe in the entirety inerrant infallible word of God, that may or may not mean he is a christian. he may in fact be regenerate, but the total evidence (fruit) may not be so evident until they start to mature and grow in the faith. or....they may eventually not really grow at all. and then it could be more evident that in fact that person was not truly born again in the first place. but that is not our concern (with all due respect). only Holy God can save, through the shed blood of the sacrifice and atoning death on the cross by His Son.
i hope this sheds some light. help me brothers, and forgive if i have left any truths out. i don't do well in these quick posts. i know there are many more details involved.

We get our corrupted flesh from Adam and Eve, true, but they had zero ability to produce any spirit offspring. Our spirit in the womb comes directly from God (Zechariah 12,1). And God calls babies a gift from Him, and that all gifts are good that come from God.
Look at Jesus, He often used little ones to illustrate what we should be like. Which is opposite of original sin tradition. The Pharisees believed people were born in sin (John 9,34).

Dead is NEVER SHOWN in the scriptures to mean MORAL INABILITY to respond to God’s truth.
Dead means SPIRITUALLY SEPARATED from the presence of God due to sin and the only way to get into His presence is through Christ.
**If we were actually dead as reformers portray then we wouldn’t even be able to sin!**
Scripture supports a totally depraved man that is spiritually separated from God and obviously unable to save Himself.
This does NOT mean man is totally incapable of responding to Him.
Dead does not relate to your “ability” but to your RELATIONSHIP.
...According to John 5:24 a dead man is able to hear and believe and pass from death to life:
    JOHN 5:24-29
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, HE THAT HEARETH MY WORD, AND BELIEVETH on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but IS PASSED FROM DEATH UNTO LIFE.
25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and NOW IS, when THE DEAD SHALL HEAR THE VOICE OF THE SON OF GOD: AND THEY THAT HEAR SHALL LIVE.
    26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.
28 Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice,
    Total MORAL depravity NOT inability
... According to John 5:40 Jesus says, “Ye will not” and He doesn’t say “Ye are not able to,”
    JOHN 5:40
40 And YE WILL NOT COME TO ME, THAT YE MIGHT HAVE LIFE.
    JOHN 6:35
35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: HE THAT COMETH TO ME shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
    ***********************************
Mankind has total moral depravity, completely separated from God Spiritually and is totally lost and helpless to save himself and would remain in his fallen state IF left on his own unless God took the first step and initiated the opportunity to be saved.
THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT WE’RE NOT ON OUR OWN ANYMORE!
God has taken the DIVINE INITIATIVE!
    He sent HIS SON.
    He sent HIS HOLY SPIRIT.
    He gave us HIS WORD.
He speaks to us through HIS CREATION.
    What more do you want?
    What more do you need?
Was God’s plan not sufficient enough?
    Was it not perfect?
    Is Christ not sufficient enough?
Is God’s word not sufficient enough?
Is all of creation not sufficient enough?
Is everything that God’s done in taking the DIVINE INITIATIVE and first step towards us not compelling or persuasive enough that He STILL has to effectually make us believe or else none would come to Him?
Do you not believe the Holy Spirit is doing His job properly???
    JOHN 16:7-9
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, HE WILL REPROVE THE WORLD OF SIN, AND OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND OF JUDGMENT:
    9 OF SIN, BECAUSE THEY BELIEVE NOT ON ME;
...God HAS in fact took that first step towards us in an effort to reconcile mankind back to Himself.
While we were yet sinners wanting nothing to do with God and His ways He chose to reach out to us.
He chose to reach out to the world while we spat on His face, mocked and shouted crucify Him.
    He’s done all this.
    It’s finished.

I love your submission but the question we should ask ourselves is this, "Does God know those who will receive him?" Second question, "is his election based on whether man will respond to him or not?" Biblically, we know that God knows all things and due to that the first answer to the first question is YES! But the second question takes a different turn. If God's election and salvation is based on whether or not man will receive him then its either God is not all knowing or he is not sovereign. John 5:40 you quoted has a different wording and rendering in the Greek. The phrase " you are not willing" which is θέλετε in the Greek is a present indicative active - 2nd Person Plural. This phrase is a statement of fact and not a statement of enticement. It is to indicate the fact of their refusal to come to him because of the hardness of their heart. Did Jesus know those who will believe or not believe in him? yes!! John 6:64 proves his perfect knowledge. Yet he speaks to them concerning their unwillingness not because he did not know they wouldn't come to him but to state the fact of their hearts and their stiff-necked disposition. God knows who will believe and who will reject yet his election and salvation is not based on the response of man but his grace to save who he shows mercy and compassion on whom he shows compassion. If man can respond to God, then there would be no need to the quickening act of the Spirit in salvation (Ephesians 2). His invitation to all is in context to whom he shows mercy and compassion. You can never morally hold God to contempt for not saving everyone after all what we all deserve is condemnation.

Then, as respectfully as I can say this, you do not understand the Bible. As a result of the fall, every aspect of man (his mind, his will, his emotions, his flesh) has been corrupted by sin (Ephesians 2:1-3, Romans 3:10-11, 5:12-21) - while he is not wholly corrupt, like a drop of coloring placed into a glass of water, the corruption that he has extends to every part of his being. Sin colors what we love and drives our desires, even determining our will, and because of that, sinners cannot reform their own hearts by the sheer power of their own will any more than they can raise their IQ by a sheer act of the will since their own wills are fallen and all that they desire is only evil continually (John 3:19, 8:34, 36, 1 Corinthians 2:14, Genesis 6:5). Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then you also can do good who are accustomed to doing evil, Jeremiah 13:23. The mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, Romans 8:7. Sinners cannot free themselves from the bondage of evil by the power of their own will because the will itself is enslaved to sin and does not want to do anything other than sin (Genesis 8:21). Indeed, if a man is to believe in God, it takes a miracle of God to will and to work within him to do according to God's good pleasure (Philippians 2:13, John 6:44), (cf. Isaiah 26:12).
John 3:19 - This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.

Can someone please tell me at what point in time did mankind become totally depraved? Were Cain and Abel totally depraved? If so why does God talk to Cain as if Cain has a free will and can make a choice to do right or wrong. Genesis 6 And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou angry {wroth}? And why is thy countenance fallen? 7If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? And if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. Here we have Cain, a totally depraved man, and God is giving him a choice between doing right or doing wrong. Now to the reformed theologians God is just playing a game with Cain because he knows Cain really doesn't have the ability to choose. So the reformed theologians are making God a liar. Because God is saying that Cain can make a choice between right or wrong, when in reality Cain cannot choose on his own. All throughout the Bible God gives people choices to make. Now if we are incapable of really making a choice of our own will, than this again makes God a liar. To me this is a dangerous and destructive doctrine by proud arrogant theologians who think they have God figured out.

The bible actually speaks to this.....
Matt 7: 24 ¶ Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto 👉🏻a wise man,👈🏻 which built his house upon a rock:
2Tim 3: 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to 👉🏻make thee wise unto salvation👈🏻 through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Acts 17: 11 These 👉🏻were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind,👈🏻 and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
12 👉🏻Therefore many of them believed;👈🏻 also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few.
Dan 12: 3 And 👉🏻they that be wise👈🏻 shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
Pro 8: 17 I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
      (That’s wisdom speaking)
Pro 8: 35 For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
So since the bible clearly says that those who believe are wise and that because some were more noble they believed, how could you ever think that man had no responsibility to exercise faith? What did he do to make him to be considered wise?

The doctrine of "total depravity" or "total inability" is false. Scripture is clear that the most vile and wicked can still respond and humble themselves before God. Here are 2 Biblical examples:
In the OT, King Ahab was the king of Samaria was more evil and Scripture says there was no one like him when it came to evil - 1 Kings 21:25
1 Kings 21:25-26 - 25 (There was never anyone like Ahab, who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife. 26 He behaved in the VILEST MANNER by going after idols, like the Amorites the Lord drove out before Israel.)
King Ahab was persuaded by his wife Jezebel to kill Naboth so he could acquire his vineyard in 1 Kings 21. Jezebel set up a conspiracy to have Naboth killed so that Ahab could acquire the vineyard which Naboth refused to sell to Ahab. God then declared disaster on Ahab in 1 Kings21:19, and 1 Kings 21:21 for the murder of Naboth.
It says in 1 Kings 21:27-29 - 27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and fasted. He lay in sackcloth and went around MEEKLY.
28 Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah the Tishbite: 29 “Have you noticed how Ahab HAS HUMBLED HIMSELF BEFORE ME? Because HE HAS HUMBLED HIMSELF, I will not bring this disaster in his day, but I will bring it on his house in the days of his son.”
Here is clearly a man who is depraved and behaved in the vilest manner, but he HUMBLED himself before the Lord. It is also clear that Ahab's humbling himself before God was a genuine act because God responded to it by postponing the disaster that He was going to bring upon him. God brought it about later in 1 Kings 22:34-38.
King Manasseh of Judah in 2 Chronicles 33 was very evil. He erected altars to
the Baals, made Asherah Poles, bowed down to the starry hosts and worshiped
them. He sacrificed his sons in the fire, and practiced sorcery, divination, witchcraft

This is another account in addition to the account of King Ahab who HUMBLED him

Scripture is clear that these 2 men HUMBLED themselves before God. God did not go to them, but they sought God by humbling themselves before Him.
Jesus commends the centurion's great faith in Matthew 8:10, and Luke 7:9 because the centurion's great faith was generated from within his own heart. He sought after God. God did not seek him.

The reason some people do not accept the gift of salvation is because they CHOSE to refuse to love the truth. If people were born being completely unable to believe, then the reason people don't believe is God's fault, not theirs. Calvinism places the onus on God and removes it from man. Heretical prayer: O Mother of Perpetual Help, thou art the dispenser of all the gifts which God grants to us miserable sinners; and for this end He has made thee so powerful, so rich, and so bountiful, in order that thou mayest help us in our misery. Thou art the advocate of the most wretched and abandoned sinners who have recourse to thee: come to my aid, for I recommend myself to thee.
In thy hands I place my eternal salvation, and to thee I entrust my soul. Count me among thy most devoted servants; take me under thy protection, and it is enough for me. For, if thou protect me, I fear nothing; not from my sins, because thou wilt obtain for me the pardon of them; nor from the devils, because thou art more powerful than all hell together; nor even from Jesus, my judge, because by one prayer from thee He will be appeased.
But one thing I fear: that in the hour of temptation I may through negligence fail to have recourse to thee and thus perish miserably. Obtain for me, therefore, the pardon of my sins, love for Jesus, final perseverance, and the grace ever to have recourse to thee, O Mother of Perpetual Help.
This is a legit Roman Catholic prayer, look up "O Mother of Perpetual Help" if you want to know if it’s legit.

I'd like to bring up an interesting counterpoint to this idea of sin nature or being by nature sinners: I agree with his universal breakdown of original sin, BUT when he says that humanity is by nature (or essentially) sinful, then he has the task of showing that Adam and Eve were essentially not human before the fall.
My point is that human nature is essentially good because God created it. That since we cannot change our nature -- i.e we do not posses transhuman ability (I cant turn myself into a monkey, although I might act like one lol)-- our nature is essentially good, because God didnt change the nature as a result of Adam's sin. This, however, does *not* mean that every human being after the fall is born without original sin and subjection to concupiscence (exception: Genesis 3:15).
Human nature being good does not mean that it automatically or solely can merit heaven; in other words, the Redeemer is NECESSARY.

All the Fathers, unanimously taught that original sin must be remitted by baptism if they are to enter Heaven.

And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 12That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
      2 Timothy 4:7

      Titus 2:11
      11For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;
      Isaiah 45;22

Acts 28:27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.

      Romans 11:32-36

      Acts 17:24-28
24The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands. 25Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives all men life and breath and everything else. 26From one man He made every nation of men, to inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands. 27God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. 28‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’

To accept reformed theology and calvinism is to reject redemption through Jesus Christ our Lord.
    ROMANS 3:21
    But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
    23 For all HAVE sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
    25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are PAST, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of HIM WHICH BELIEVETH in Jesus.
"But God be thanked, that ye WERE the servants of sin, but ye have OBEYED FROM THE HEART that form of doctrine which was delivered you." Romans 6:17 KJV
And now the book of 1 JOHN will make better sense to you. And you will understand that Paul wrote in ROMANS 7 about his PAST behavior, to identify with others, so that we all can be encouraged to strive to enter in at the straight gate, and to continue on the straight and narrow way, in Christ, by his Spirit.

You simply and obviously do not know what you're commenting about while making Jesus Christ the Lord the villain in your life. To the contrary, that fallen man is beyond self-help to bargain his way into forgiveness of sin is well summed up in Eph.2:1-3. To you, fallen man is alive in his dead to God heart but you make fallen man his own hero saving himself at will. Man is not saved by his own will, Jn.1:12,13. Woe is you who elevates fallen man while lying about the goodness of Christ Jesus to save those dead in sin.

Why did Jesus say repent OR perish if there no choice on our part? Jesus was giving them a choice - they could repent of their sins or perish because of their sins.
How can Jesus tell someone to repent or perish if God already predestined their choice in the matter? - The 5 keys of Calvinism:
*1.* "God" is so so sovereign and loving that creates 100 depravated persons who hate him.
*2.* But before creating them, he lovingly chooses 90 to be in hell forever.
*3.* He is very merciful so he send his son to die for the 10 he has chosen.
*4* "God" lovingly forces this 10 to believe in his son.
*5.* Finally he forces this 10 to enter in heaven, although some of them returned to their old life, finishing worst than when they met "God".
