No it is not! Why does any one listen to Calvin, he was a despicable person murdered at least 41 people. NO WHERE IN THE BIBLE do you find the statement We are predestined to Salvation - not there. Romans 1 also says "They KNEW God but did not honor him as God, so God gave them over to their ungodly desires." Then Paul says when they die and go to Hell "They have no excuse!" If God chooses who will be saved - They would have an excuse. So we have disproved Irresistable grace and God decides who goes to heaven all in one. And through in the fact there is also free will, "Although they knew the truth they decided - THEY DECIDED - not to follow. But wordhipped the creation and not the Creator!! Original Sin - Total agreement - but only because Romans 5-6-7 teach it!!! In fact Calvin's point of view can be disproven not just in Romans 1 - but also in John 3:16 and verse 18 as well. Why, If someone does not beleive Jesus says they are condemned already - so even Jesus teaches that free will is present in OUR CHOICES!!! God's Choice is everyone will get saved!!

@@markwills3602 Obviously you have your mind made up. Just be convinced in your own mind. I get it, I used to make the same arguments you are making now. Which is why I am not going to push any points, but I am going to tell you why I believe what I believe. What appeals to me about reformed theology is that we don't attempt to solve apparent issue of God's sovereignty and human responsibility with a concept of human autonomy that I do not find in the bible. We live in the tension because that is what the bible seems to do. However, I would hope we could both agree that neither of us is totally right. Each of us have flaws in our theology. Sure, I think I am right and you think you are. Where we agree are the essentials. We agree that God alone saves. That Christ is the only way. That God is Triune. That Christ's sacrifice is the only payment for sins. And I could go on. My father who I respect as a bible teacher more than any, is an Arminian, and we can enjoy fellowship together. I apologize if I sounded harsh in my comment earlier. I try to approach this topic with love because it gets so heated. I agree with Spurgeon that the old Arminian standard is the same as we believe, apart from the operation of the Holy Spirit, no man is saved.

    • @prestonbrowning264
      @prestonbrowning264 4 года назад +15

@@markwills3602 Human autonomy is not biblical and that is the very thing you are trying to preserve. The Bible clearly says in Romans 8 that those foreknown are predestined to be conformed, and those predestined are called, those called are justified, and those justified are glorified. If you twist that and ignore the link between those foreknown, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification to say "well it doesn't say predestined to salvation, it only says to be conformed", then I don't know what I can do for you. It is the natural reading of the bible. To your point about Romans 1. Yes, every single person knows of God, and has enough knowledge to be condemned. If you say that passage means everyone is able to please God by faith and repentance apart from God granting it by bestowing grace upon them, then I lose you there as well. Please understand, your objections are not new. They have been stated time and time again. They have been answered, but people don't like the answers, therefore, there are different theologies. And that is ok as long as you attempt to be faithful to the Bible and I think that you are. Let's agree to disagree, and let us both be sharpened by one another and encouraged by one another to study further.

How about that word "MIGHT" we find in the NT? Regarding the matter of redemption, it says that many sinners will refuse to believe "that they MIGHT [potentially] be saved"? Might be saved? Potentially saved? Hmmm, that doesn't fit the typical Calvinist mold, since, according to Calvinism, nobody who has the potential to be saved will ever be lost, for all are elected unto salvation. There is not "might be saved" when it comes to the non-elect. How about "deeming yourselves unworthy of eternal life?" That's another statement in the Bible. Can that possibly be true of the dead sinner who has absolutely to capacity whatsoever to respond to God? There are plenty of Bible verses which fall into the Arminian camp, demanding that we present the revelation of Scripture in a balanced manner. One theological angle is not enough. Plucking one string on the Bible Banjo, so to speak, is not the playing good spiritual music.

Tim Gilbert the reality is that we are as helpless as the criminal on the cross to do anything to earn our salvation. As someone who was raised Roman Catholic, the thought that I can contribute nothing to my salvation was offensive to me. It WAS offensive to me, but in hindsight, it’s a load off to know that I’m justified by faith. Has it changed the way I live? I’m a work in progress, but by the grace of God, and the leading from the Holy Spirit, I’m not the way I used to be. I would love to get a hold of the younger me and tell him a few things, because I was ignorant and self-centered.

@@patriot4780 the reason for feeling helpless, is when we first heard the gospel, the Holy Spirit convicted us of our guilt. The answer to the forgiveness is believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Romans 3:24-26; John 3:16-18, Romans 10:9-17). The tension that comes from Calvinism is dispersed from the confused theology from the likes of John Macarthur, Steven Lawson, and Voddie Baucham's teachings. 1Corinthians 14:33 "For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints." Here in this passage, Paul explains the arguments of who should be teaching, like women. Today we argue over what is true: Calvinism. Reformed theology. Think about that... "Reformed." Did the words of the Bible need reforming? No. We do. Thus came Jesus Christ. It's a 33 year old story written in the four synoptic Gospels. Calvin's dogma came from way beyond the writers of the Bible. His institutes for Christian Living bear no accurate citations from the Bible. Historical accounts say he was a dispotical lawyer who demanded obedience to his "decrees, or face jail time or worse, like being burned at the stake.

And how do you explain God's answer to Cain in Genesis 4:6‐7 where God says to him about sin that Cain "must rule over it"? Is God telling Cain to do something which Cain is actually unable to do? He tells Cain that if he does well then he'll be accepted. Enoch and Elijah did well and were ascended into heaven long before Jesus Christ was. How does the doctrine of Total Depravity answer this?

Arminianism and Calvinism have been the classic debate between Christians, but to call out on them and say they are heretics is a mistake because they can be saying the same exact thing about Calvinists. The primary doctrines of salvation is what all Christians must say yes and Amen to. Other than that secondary doctrine will be debated until Jesus reaffirms in us all things as we dwell with him for eternity. God bless.

Yes, but Luther still held the power of grace vested in the Church and the sacraments, particularly baptism. He believed that the Christian culture of his day was of God and anything like a secularist world in which Christians were again the underdogs as they were in the first century was unthinkable. It's important to keep this in mind. Man had no part to play in his salvation because the play had essentially been made. It could not be UNMADE. This is different from Calvinism, especially the English speaking Puritan form which becomes so important to American Evangelical thinking.

I tend to oversimplify and I hope I’m not being unBiblical.
Didn’t God say that He knows the end in the beginning? Having even written those who will be saved and sealing the scroll? In other words, doesn’t God from the beginning know who would be a “dead end” thus calling and electing those to be saved?
On the other hand, reminding what Spurgeon said, we don’t know who is and who isn’t elected thus preaching to every creature a must.
Imagine this... if you were a football coach from yesterday’s game. Wouldn’t you be able to know who did miss and bench the dude? But, since it was yesterday, you would also be able to know who wouldn’t miss (somehow it is logical to me, but I’m not sure I’m being able to make it clear).
Once I was told on a Sunday school that God knows everything, I knew God also knew those who are saved, then, I’ve heard about the Book of Life and about election in many other verses.
      Well... hope it helped.

John MacArthur's understanding of John 1:12-13 is in error. The object of the verse 12 is Jesus because Jesus is the subject of John chapter one. And so, it is undeniable that verse 13 is also speaking about Jesus. And verse 14 also established that fact. But according to John MacArthur, he interpreted that the person "who" in verse 13 as the one who received Jesus. The problem is that if the person "who" in verse 13 is the receiver of Jesus, then John MacArthur forgets that the "who" is a man who is born of the flesh and by the will of man because his birth is of his biological father. David tells us that that is the state in which all of us were born in Psalm 51:1 "Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me." Only Jesus can be said to have been born "not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God".
John MacArthur uses John 3 citing that being born again is the result of the work of God. John MacArthur seem to have confused receiving Jesus with being born again, he thinks that both are the same. Contrary to his belief, receiving Jesus is not the same as being born again. Receiving Jesus is a choice that we made and only after receiving Jesus that we receive the Holy Spirit is what is meant by being born again and so we must yield to the Holy Spirit in order to live a life for God. That is why there is a warning not to grieve the Holy Spirit, that is also a choice to make, to please or to grieve Him.
John MacArthur's teaching tell us that a sinner cannot receive God's salvation and repent unless it is God's will. This is nice and cozy to him and those who buy his theology but on the other hand is it the fault of those who didn't receive Jesus since receiving Jesus must come from the will of God? If it is true that receiving Jesus is God's will then is it God's will to leave out the rest to damnation? If John MacArthur's teaching is correct then it is disturbing that God would create someone for hell without the person's ability to repent.
What about Adam, he was also not born of blood or the flesh neither by the will of man, was he also born of God since God breathed into him His Spirit? Was it Adam's choice to sin or was it God's will for him to sin?
Whatever you want to call it, Calvinism or Reformed Calvinism or other schism it do not matter, the teaching of John MacArthur that a person is unable to repent and turn to Christ by his own freewill is not biblical. When Israel were in sin, God spoke to His people this way. Isaiah 1:18 “Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool." Why must God reason with Israel if repentance was His will to cause them? Why can't God zapped them and they will repent? Obliviously God reasoning with Israel is for them to make a choice and God give them the freewill to do so.
Repentance is a choice we make but God provided a way to salvation through repentance in Jesus Christ. Jesus said God so love the world (includes everyone in the world) and whosoever believes in Him shall be saved. Who is the whosoever? Does it mean everyone who believes or a selected few can believe?

What was the decisive cause of your faith in Christ?
The Calvinist says "The cause of my faith was Christ."
The Arminian says "The cause of my faith in Christ was myself." There's way more to it than that (Depravity,Election, Atonement,New birth, perseverance, naming faith, etc), but the original question definitely identifies which "camp" one subscribes to. Both are biblically based. Both rely on scripture to form a differing perspective (and somewhat opposing view) with either viewpoint, the other can always point to scripture and say "yea, but what about THIS?" Both believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. I don't believe either have lost salvation because of it. I prefer to understand what I can of each and move on without firmly planting my feet in either camp. Are those that attack him so righteous as to also say "ALL protestants or ALL Catholics" are lost? I cannot.

Only the Elect of God can and will examine themselves to make sure their calling and Election is sure if you do this you shall not fall. 2 Peter 1:10.
Many of the free willers will not examine themselves by the word to make sure they are not decieved so when the elect falls into sin he can truly ask himself how can i do this sin? O Lord have mercy on me as David said, O Lord restore the Joy of my salvation. David did not lose his salvation he knew that but he list his confidence and joy.
The joy of obediance to God's word gives the elect peace of mind with the Lord.
The unsaved will just use the exuse and say, I am just backslidden. The Bible mentions this word about five times concerning the nation of Israel they were in rebelion they were moving back from the word of God into sin they were not saved God cut them off He divorced Isreal.

When I was truly converted, divine election made complete sense to me, although at first I was hesitant. I grew up in a very legalistic environment, a charasmatic Pentecostal denomination. Where you are constantly on guard, able to lose your salvation with any sin, and could die and go to hell if not fully repentant and completely clear of all sin before death. It was a nightmare. After truly becoming a Christian, almost 20 years later, I listened to and read MacArthur and sproul. I realized I had it all wrong and it was like a light bulb going off in my head, everything made sense and the Word of God became plain and clear. I also came to the realization that I was helplessly lost and unable to free myself absent God,s intervention.

Trying to systematize God's Will into system that arrogantly states that 'this is how God works, five easy steps!' How arrogant! I am neither a Calvinist not completely Arminian in my understanding of God's will for salvation for mankind but by God's grace I have been given the ability to live with a capacity for mystery. Hard core Calvinists have an incapacity to live with mystery! When Nicodemus asked, was he dead? Deaf? How could he even ask such a question if he were completely 'dead'? Reall getting exhausted of Calvinists conflation of the two aspects of Salvation. Man's response-ability to the Spirit breathed word of the Gospel, and God's sovereign choice to regenerate those who "respond" to the message in faith. It is God's sovereign and gracious choice to pardon those who come to Him in faith as apposed to working to earn His favor. Faith is NOT a meritorious work. God is not obligated to forgive our sins when we admit we are sinners. He is gracious to forgive by His choice. It is no secret who God desires to save as Calvinists would lead us to believe. It is those who trust in His chosen SON.

Calvinist believe all the scriptures that speak of people making choices. We believe people make choices all the time. However, based on scriptures like Romans 8:7-8, Romans 3:10-11 (Psalm 14:1-3), 1 Cor 1:18, 1 Cor 2:14, John 6:44a, Eph 2:1-6 (Paul writes of nonbelievers as being spiritually dead in their sins) we believe that the unregenerate, natural person cannot and will not choose for God.That's their choice. On the other hand, with scriptures like John 3:1-8, John 6:44b, Eph 2:4-6, 1 John 5:1; 2 Tim 2:24-26 (especially v. 25), Act 11:18, Ezek 37:1-11, Ezek 36:26, Jer 24:7 we believe that it takes a work from God in order someone dead in their sins to be raised to spiritual life, granted repentance, in order that they then want to make the choice for God/Jesus Christ. All those scriptures that make statements like if someone chooses to believe they will have eternal life are nothing more than statements of fact.If someone believes they will be saved. There is nothing in those scriptures about who can or will make that choice. The idea that it means everyone can make a choice for God/Christ is imposed onto those scriptures. There are other passages as I have listed that address the issue of who will and who won't do that. Also, God determines not only the ends but the means to those ends.Romans 10:17 says faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.Having prophets go to Israel and implore them to repent and believe, and people now preaching the gospel of Christ, is the means by which God then draws those who will come to understand and believe. It was the same in the OT as it is since Christ.Remember - not all of Israel believed.Only the remnant that were called out by God by his grace (Rom 11:4-6).Those are the people who like the dry bones he raised to life (spiritually) and gave a new heart (turning hearts of stone into hearts of flesh).

JM misrepresented the free-will crowd, when he said man can choose Christ, WITHOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT. The key scripture is Hebrews 6.
    Hebrews 6:4-9 (KJV)
"For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.
But, beloved, WE ARE PERSUADED BETTER THINGS OF YOU, and things that accompany salvation, though we thus speak."
God draws us, the Holy Spirit enlightens us, and convicts us of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and then the choice is ours. The thrust of Hebrews is warning fellow Jews NOT TO TURN BACK. They're drawn to the door, and Jesus is knocking, but it's their choice to open the door and walk through.
God is NOT a respecter of persons.

And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad, and glorified the word of the Lord: and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.
Notice how it doesn't say anything close to what your catholic non-God's-word says? You can't be appointed to anything if you don't accept the free GIFT of salvation.
Matthew 22:14 For many are called, but few are chosen.
This verse makes no sense in your delusional reality, if there is no free will how is someone called and not chosen? You people are heretics denying Christ' shed blood of salvation. If it's not a gift then it's null and void.

      1. The early church hadn't enough time to study the Scriptures and find out that the Bible teaches Calvinism. They didn't even believe in the Trinity the same as we do till the 4th century. They needed many time to think about all these things. The churches teaching had to progress through the centuries through studying the Bible. The early church fathers are not the best place to look for sound Theology!
      2. Most church fathers didn't believe in these doctrines because from nature nobody believes all these teachings. Nobody likes the idea that we are totally depraved and had absolutely nothing to do with our salvation. From nature we are to pride and stupid to believe in reformed soteriology. St. Augustine (4th century) and later John Calvin and the other Reformators and Puritans became convinced of these Doctrines because they digged in to the scriptures.
      3. What scripture teaches is more important than what the early church believed, and scripture teaches Calvinism! Especially Jesus did believe and teach Calvinism in John 1+3+6+10+15+17, etc. ... And the Apostle Paul did teach it too, especially in Romans 1+3+5+8+9+11 and Ephesians 1+2+4. Be open to that idea in your Bible Studies and you will find Calvinism in almost every book of the New Testament (and in many of the Old Testament too)!
      God bless!

@@Jesus.is.my.saviourI respectfully disagree with you. For example an extremely early Church writing, the First Apology of Saint Justin Martyr, discusses the Trinity in a section. The concept of human will being so ensnared from birth, that it rests in total spiritual inability is addressed by early Church Fathers including Saint Justin Martyr and Saint Ireneaus so we know how they view this teaching. Many early Church Fathers dedicated their entire lives to studying Scripture. Many gave their lives for the faith. They loved God and the Scriptures in ways we modern Christians need to imitate. Their writings are the greatest theological works in history. Even the reformers acknowledged that they owed much to the early Church Fathers for the knowledge they passed down. Without the early Church Fathers we wouldn't even possess preserved Scripture. I do encourage you to read early church writings. Many early Church Fathers wrote extensive commentaries on Scripture as well. Indeed, even John Calvin commends Saint John Chrysostom as being amongst the best exegetes of Scripture. I highly encourage you read Saint John Chrysostom's commentary on the Gospels as well as Saint Paul's epistles. He is a Greek Church Father so he is very familiar with the language and its context from the time as well.

Um, Calvinism is NOT the gospel. Sure, it contains gospel truth, but it is NOT the gospel, any more than dispensationalism is the gospel. I know a girl who got saved in a Calvinistic based church, then later in her walk with the Lord she came to disagree with certain elements taught by the church, and subsequently left and joined another solid Christian church with views more in harmony with her personal convictions. That church gasped at her decision, very similar to a cult group who thinks it has a monopoly on truth. Sadly, some Calvinistic churches have taken on the spirit of a cult group, seeking to promote its way of thinking at the expense of the pure, simple message of the Cross. I've preached for 30 years in the same place. We rarely talk about John Calvin, the subject and debate surrounding Calvinism, and most people don't know much about nor care about the TULIP acrostic. And it's amazing how lovely and godly these folks are! In fact, it some respects I'm glad they live in ignorance to some of this "stuff" people spend their whole lives debating. Help me out folks, cause in the Bible it says God wants all to be saved (2 Peter 3:9). But calvanist teaching says that God arbitrarily chooses who He wants to save, And the rest He created to be destroyed. So God wants all people to be saved, and he also wants some people to not be saved?
(I affirm that we have nothing to do with our salvation, its a beautiful gift of love, theres absolutely nothing we could do to earn our salvation. We are all deserving of Gods wrath and righteous, perfect judgement.
I also affirm that Jesus was the propiteation of God's wrath. I believe the Sacrifice for the atonement of sin had to be perfect, i believe the only way someone could be perfect is if they were God, who eptied himself and came to earth as God incarnate, the Word of God, by whom all things were made.)
What i dont believe is that God wants some to be saved and some to not be saved.
I heard one calvanist say he was happy to preach to those God did not choose to save because God chose them for destruction and it brought glory to God to destroy them.
Its: whosever believes in Him shall have eternal life. Not whosever God chooses to believe in him will have eternal life.

Its also not scriptural , when Adam and Eve fell in the garden we ALL inherited their sinful nature , and as Isiah tells us all of our righteousness is as FILTHY RAGS , we need to be changed by the Mighty hand of God , For as Jesus said ,unless you are Born Again you cannot inherit the Kingdom of God , Marvel not that I say to you that you Must be born Again . 1 Pet. 1: 23 , Being Born Again not of corruptible seed , but of incorruptible by the word of God which liveth and abideth Forever .2 Cor. 5: 17 ,Therefore If any man be in Christ he be a new creature , old things are passed away , behold All things are become new , All things are of God who has reconciled us to Himself by Jesus Christ and has given to us the ministry of reconciliation 21, For He had made Him to be sin that we might be made the Righteousness of God in Him ! .

But its the truth whether you accept or not , The word of God proclaims a God that saves ,Arminianism speaks of a god that enables man to save himself , one view presents election by the Father , redemption by the Son , and calling by the Spirit of God directed towards the same persons and as securing their salvation infallible . the other gives a different reference , ( The objects of redemption being All mankind ; Of calling those who hear the Gospel ; and of election those hearers who respond ) and denies that any mans salvation is secured by any of them . One makes salvation depend on the work of God and the other the work of man ! . Man by his fall into a state of sin ....being altogether averse from good and dead in sin is Not able by his own strength to convert Himself or to prepare himself thereunto, The West Minister Confession .
