Frieren is my favorite this year. I heard good things about Jujutsu Kaisen but I'm boycotting that one, won't watch ever.

It continues to be crazy how this anime plays with time, essentially fitting two stories inside a little over 20 minutes and it doesn't feel rushed at all; despite one of them taking over the course over 3 months. Equally impressive is how a new character was built up instantly and you understand what kind of man he is while adding character depth to the main cast in their reactions to him, it's all just so effective and efficient.

2:16 This series is so IN TUNE with its character dynamics- from Episode 1 you can instantly feel the bond of the Hero Party without even knowing anything about them, and you grow to love what Frieren’s Party is developing as well. Each of them have felt a little misfit or lost on their own, but together they are so perfect for each other 👌
Also I am SO glad for how they animated the dance. It’s hard to capture it on the manga but there’s a lot of feeling, fluidity and motion in the dance scene that I really felt emotional in a way. Partly bc I’m grateful for the beautiful adaptation and partly also because I JUST FEEL SO GIDDY FOR STARK & FERN 🥹

For me the Stark vs Dragon is a wonder in animation. We also has Fern vs Lugner animation so smooth. The dance animation is nice too. The music choice, the story telling space… this is definitely animation of the year.

Sein won't let go about wanting an older sexy lady to join their party. It was nice to see what he could do on his own though, if it was not for the reflective barrier of the monster he probably could have taken it out on his own. It was amusing how he left the village happy being thanked by his ideal woman. It was adorable to see Fern and Stark sleeping together jumbled together like that.

Yo i love how they extended the dance part. In the manga, it was just a couple of panels, but in this epislde, we get to see more of Fern and Stark's expressions. They did capture how a girl (of Fern's age) would react to her first ball dance. I'm sure ladies who had gone to their prom with their date knows what I'm talking about 😂
As for Sein's episode.. I love that they added the part of Frieren reaching for Sein's head to pat it. That was so sweet❤

They both started really awkward but slowly became comfortable with each other and then the dancing just flowed. Both their expressions relaxed, and they were smiling to each other with such tenderness.
As Mr. Henderson from SpyxFamily would say, VERY ELEGANTOOO!!

You talked about the flashback with Heiter telling Stark about how they never knew what Frieren was thinking, but what hit me in that speech was the line about the Demon lord. It's right around 9:52. He says "...she swore she would defeat the Demon King, and I chose to believe her..." I'm pretty sure we're going to find out that she defeated the Demon King, but didn't want the credit. I also like how they ended it. They ran the credits over the ending, rather than using the normal ED. It's like they wanted to make sure the important pieces were in the show, so they cut the song, rather than the content. I like that. This show is just amazing. I am really loving this ride. Thanks for your thoughts and comments!

  • @xtremegaming9943

Another banger of an episode. You had the entire first half dealing with this curse and you see Stark then Fern then Frieren all drop to it. Big boy Sein going into it alone and I thought to myself this isn't going to end well for him and he surprised me. He has attack spells and if this plant wasn't a reflective type, he would've dealt with it alone. Not only that, he's nimble as hell and you'd think with all that smoking and drinking, there's no way his stamina is any good but leave it to this man to keep up with a damn plant monster.
I loved how he remembered a story from Heiter where they were talking about how Frieren didn't need to have any mutual trust and Heiter would trust her with whatever she needed.
And as soon as Sein woke her up she did the most badass thing in 5 seconds, you'll ever see.
An arc of a Zoltrack straight into the heart of it.
What a great fight. Art and animation was clean asf.
Also... Sein was getting a little too giddy when that woman was praising them 🤣
The second half takes the cake though.
You had a desperate father who needed someone to stand in for his dead son so they could keep moral up and rebuild from the bloody battle and the fact they were very low on money as well.
Stark wasn't a fan as he had to learn to be proper and train the sword style and you can see the PTSD from his village which the father picked up on and calmed him down.
It was a really sweet moment and Mut, the younger heir, was in a similar situation to Stark in his village.
He didn't have the talent of his brother but he wad a hard worker.
It was a really good scene overall especially the dance. It kinda has a similarity to Eris and Rudeos dance in S1 but with its own flair. It looked like 2 people dancing in real time with the movements and expressions.
    Exceptional...
While Stark may not be noticing since Fern is hard to read, she's falling for him. 100 percent you can tell she's having those feelings around him even though she's not showing. And I'm suspecting that by the end of this cour, they're going on a date if not gonna hold hands at least at some point or another.
I'm not gonna bet on a kiss just yet but who knows... It can happen.
Great episode and I'm honestly hyped for more... 🙌🙌🙌
    Great review Brandon 🔥

The animation of the dance was completely hand drawn, no CGI at all. This is the level of animation we used to see in classic Disney feature films, but in a 28 episode anime series. Honestly astounding, and incredibly beautiful.

What an amazing episode of Frieren yet again it feel like it’s impossible for this show not to have an episode which is at least great or better. But yeah as we start the episode I thought that it was wholesome how Fern did fall asleep on Frieren shoulder. Then Sein ask them what their party is missing. And they all start thinking about which archetypes they are missing. But Fern suggest a rouge seeing how easily Frieren falls for mimic traps. But Sein says that it’s an older milf woman that they miss lol. Then they come to a village and I like the mystery of why everyone was asleep there. But what I liked even more was how Frieren did explain the difference between Arcane magic that wizards use and divine magic that clerics use. And it was awesome how he did use his book to cast his spells. As well how he did awake Frieren and I first thought that she was shooting her magic in the wrong direction. But it did arc back 180 and one shooted the monster which was great.
Now to the second part of the episode. I liked how let Stark be with someone who reminded him about his father. And how that man had Stark be like his dead son. Because even if he did seemed harsh and strict at first he was a good and caring father. But how he did refer to Frieren as Stark mommy was great XD. But my favorite part was the scenes between Fern and Stark as it was such a great shipping moment. You could really see how Fern did fall for him in that dance. I mean that dance was very lovely the only one who was at a similar level was the dance scene from Tearmoon empire.
Also love how long it took Frieren to pick a grimoire like the butler had been waiting for her half a day just standing there in the background poor fellow😂

I enjoyed Sein's courage when he dealt with the flower. His wisdom to wake Frieren and for help only elevated my respect for him - i.e., he's brave and logical.
Fern and Stark's dance was a magical moment. Her dress twirling is a seriously underrated piece of technical animation, but they pulled it off well.

I have to say this is going to be number 1 of all time. Can not compare it to much other than stuff like Konosuba etc Isekai stuff that I have found myself watching over the last few years. Anyways great story / characters / amazing art and so on. I am thinking Frieren is probably mid 20's in human years and has moments more in the teenish side of things. Like the clothing potion and how she went about getting it. Fern seems to have passed her in maturity level. Yet on things with demons the Aura kill yourself shows she has a different world mode. The other thing I have noticed, it seems the hero's party is being remade with people who all have connections to the original members. Fern taking Frierens place, Stark being Eisen.. Aesin for Heiter and not sure who will take Himmel's spot. With it setup like that, Frieren is getting to watch what she missed by not really being part of the time structure when they killed the demon king.

Shoot me too, this is also my Anime of the Year.
First: Sein. He has the moves. Half of them are clearly training, the other half... he likely polished them by "skipping on his tab". And him going on and on about the lady that thanked them after saving that village... what was that other priest from that other series earlier this year that loved to go "pick some flowers"? 'Cause my man Sein is sure to pay them ladies of the night a visit.
Stark: Surprisingly, for the guy who is most of the time the comedy relief of the party, he gets some very emotional episodes. He has his flaws, but when the chips are down, he pulls through. Whether one-shooting a dragon/demon/whatever, or gallantly extending a hand to Fern to dance away the night. And the fact that he shot her words back at her ("do it for the money for the journey"), priceless. Love their interactions. Only thing missing would've been a sparring scene between him and Mut, with Stark knocking him down and then imparting Eisen's words of wisdom "Stand up. So long as you can stand up again, you ain't defeated".
Fern: She took a backseat during most of the episode, except for the dance. Then, she stole the stage together with Stark. I too, hope they have a nice relationship going forward, regardless of them becoming officially a couple or not at the end (though the odds are heavy on that ship already). And boy, that dance scene. Total beauty.
Frieren: She lives by the Anos Voldigoad rule, though in her case is the 5-seconds rule. Then her enemy is toast. You don't carry around a thousand years of experience for nothing. It's second nature for her to size up her opponents and one-shot them in the next blink. Then she just spends the rest episode lazying around. -Cherry- Strawberry on top is how she blatantly tells Sein she has cake to eat when he asks her to dance. She has her priorities straight. Except where grimoires are concerned. That butler killed me ("leave already" 😂).
All in all, another stellar episode from a soon to be GOAT anime. This is THE Anime of the Year. Period.
Second place would go to either Spy X Family or Oshi no Ko.

I don't know if it's a coincidence or not, but 'Mut' is a German word that means courage or bravery. At first, I thought, 'That's so disrespectful to name your child Mut,' but then I found out that there's a meaning behind the name.

    • @AHBrandonReviews
      @AHBrandonReviews  7 месяцев назад

All the names are German meanings, so courage is what it is. It's funny when you think of how it starts and how it seems like the second son is viewed before seeing how much the dad loves him. I'll never stop laughing at the idea of a dad calling a son mut while son 1 is on the wall like that though lmfao

Well, his name's not "Mutt". As ALL the other characters, his name is also a german word and it's "Mut" (pronounced moot, with a long "oo").
And "Mut" is the german word for "courage" in English.
    A big improvement, isn't it 🙂

Frieren or Vinland Saga S2 for AOTY, everything else falls WAY behind those two series. Honestly a hard pick between the two.

I dunno - I mean, it has some REALLY stiff competition with The Apothecary Diaries, and that's just in this season alone, so that's not even including Oshi no Ko and other anime earlier this year that people swore was anime of the year... but that was one incredible episode of Frieren, so I'll let you have your recency bias - at least for right now 😉

For me, my #1 of 2023 is always going to be "Dr. STONE".
    #2 is "Oshi no Ko"
    #2 is "Sousou no Frieren"
I didn't make a mistake in those numbers.
Making me choose is like someone holding a bottle of vodka in one hand and holding another bottle of vodka in the other hand and asking me to choose the one that lives.
