Incidentally, now we know why Uebel called Fern's fighting style "boring" last episode: in combat, Fern only uses spells that everyone already knows. No fun new spells for Uebel to copy, just basic spells and "git gud".
(The same reason, by the way, that Linie was "playing with her food" against Stark, waiting for him to fight back instead of killing him.)
Wirbel befriending Stark and Denken adopting Ricther and Laufen are masterful narrative choices.
My funniest part of the episode was the old man who dresses up like a martial arts master who comes to visit Stark, ends up saying he has nothing more to teach him, then leaves lol. Second best was Denken taking on a new granddaughter.
Wirbel is great haha. I am glad we got to see him outside of "battle mode". Like Fern said, he's a totally different person.
I am glad we got to see all the party chars after the first exam. Nice to see their personalities outside the exam. Especially Ubel lol. She seems genuinely interested in hanging out with "four eyes".
Frieren: Who was that old man?
Stark: Hell if I know. He just started coming up to me and talking while I was training.
Denken: **saw a random teenager**

Everyone already mentioned the second half’s flashback but man. That part where Himmel requests the chef to keep the flavor the same as it is for generations to come FOR the sake of Frieren, then Frieren being okay with the new change anyway REALLY gets me 😭😭 i think every scene w Himmel is a show stealer because of how soft his voice is every time he’s there. You feel the warmth and you feel the sincerity in anything he says, and what you take away from it is so remembered (which i feel is also thanks to Frieren’s perspective of the memory, how important it is for her in retrospect)
I wanna see a good, flashy Himmel fight in a flashback at least once 😭
It's interesting that Uebel's casting of Sorganil was visibly imperfect. The rings were kind of twisted compared to Wirbel's which were perfect circles.

@@AHBrandonReviews It just shows the incredible attention to every detail in this show. Everything they show on screen has meaning to it, and you can actually learn new lore like this that is only shown, not told.
Another great example of lore that is only shown/implied visually at first: Frieren has total, precise control over exactly how much mana she releases, as shown and told in Episode 19 when she catches the stille. But, you can figure that out in Episode 10 when she uses this same ability to perfectly balance Aura's scales and then let them sit there perfectly balanced for a minute or so before slamming her side down for the win. Episode 10 never explains how precise her control is, because it doesn't matter at the time. But if you're watching the scales carefully, you can figure it out. And then the show confirms it explicitly 9 episodes later.
This show knows how to do exposition by showing rather than telling 🔥🔥🔥
The difference and similarities between their meals in the Hero's party and Frieren's current party. Fern continues to be Team Mom. Stark, you have nothing to do at the moment, so why not lend them a hand.
Fern also had such a sweet tooth at the restaurant, that I hope that she have a spell to cure diabetes just in case XD
Find you a girl who looks at you like Frieren looks at Kanne and Lawine as they banter back and forth in an economy-priced hotel room in a medieval setting.
Stark: I thought I was just imagining him this entire time.
there is an official preview for the next episode and oh boy seeems like the studio is using all the budget they don't have !
Stark was basically going, "Yay! My wife's gone for a business trip!"
Then, "Oh, crap, I forgot to ask for how long..."
every flash back holds behind it a very great message.
and it does so good in conveying it.
and on the other hand we witness frieren's growth and development.
this is just peak writing.
Stark is becoming a physical beast and most of that progress is offscreen funnily enough. Kraft trained him,the dwarf too and now this old man,not to mention all the physical training he has probably been doing offscreen. When we finally get to see him shine he might even be able to break spells with his willpower alone. Really curious to see him in action
It was confirmed this episode that Ubel could've won if she wanted to in the first exam. Which I was not surprised at because I figured she was holding back
Frieren is the type of anime where the slice of life episodes can be just as good as the action ones. Half of the time in these episodes, Fern is mad at someone which makes it 10 times better because when she's angry all she wants is sweets and Frieren's money going down the drain with each sweet.
First it was Stark for having a nice time and sleeping in while drinking Orange juice. She was pissed off and then she threw a jab at Frieren as well.
Everything gets sorted out with a nice desert and a great meal. That food looks delicious and I'd like some of that please and thank you. I've always loved how they utilise flashbacks in this anime and this should be a lesson to every author and anime studio adapting a source material on how to do a flashback. It's not interrupting anything and it's not pointless like some other anime try to do in important moments.
With Frieren and her old party we actually get a lot of characterisation that you don't need a spin off of that time because you get most of it through the flashback.
And the chef stuff with the flavour is great because Frieren accepted that things can't stay like they are forever. People change, times move on and new people come to replace the old and the stuff they do is gonna be different than it was 80 or so years before.
And that's what this anime teaches us about. We shouldn't fear the future and think about the past times being better... Living in the moment is the best thing anyone can do.
Idk... If we are going to be finishing all 3 tests in this season... Maybe we'll only finish the second test by the end of the 28 episode run which I wouldn't be mad at as long as they announce another season right after this one.
But I'm very excited to see how Frieren and the others are gonna deal with this particular examiner considering no one has passed their exam in the last 4 attempts.
Sounds like a good challenge for Frieren.
It's honestly funny how Stark gets approached and poached by the most random of people.
The guy that was a murderer only a few episodes ago is like hey bro... Wanna do a quick hunt with me? Let's do it.
And he just takes him and leaves.
Or Ubel showing how she's a copycat as long as she gets to emphasise with said person.
Some people are not gonna be happy that she's a copycat of a mage but her character is very interesting.

I'm glad they didn't go straight into the second exam, it was nice to watch them all in their free time and I am glad we got to see a bit of a mix with Fern hanging with Lawine and Kanne. I'm particularly glad to see Stark again with Frieren and Fern, it was funny how the first thing Fern does is cold him as soon as they meet lol. Stark was being a naughty boy so it's not surprising. Wirbel finding Stark perfect was great, I wonder if he will try to earnestly recruit him after the exam, if he survives that is.

It’s all the little details and flashbacks that make Frieren so special…..the action sequences are just the cherry on top of Fern’s parfait.

This was to me the best episode of the show yet. I'm just a sucker for these cooldown, characterbuilding episodes. Actually had to pause several times just to keep track of the highpoints.
Fern returning to Stark's blissful life and ruining everything was the perfect lead-in.
Übel getting shut down even when threatening murder definitely puts her on a path of redemption just to do a 180 at a pivotal moment and kill someone, calling it now.
And then we're back to flashbacks, I actually cheered. Because flashbacks always deliver the big, emotional moments. And they do, through steak. Himmel asking the chef to leave his recipes to future generations was perfect, because Himmel asked that specifically for Frieren. Absolute G, that guy.
Lawine and Kanne also big. Love these two.
On a sidenote: I really appreciate your anime reviews, because you cut through the bullshit and approach each episode with just the joy of watching anime, whether you fake it or not.
All my real feelings I've never faked enjoyment I drop anything I don't enjoy and won't talk about something if i find it boring cause life is too short to focus on things you dislike

She's going anaconda mode, lay down and sleep for a week to digest all those steaks (but only if she manages to fool Fern into letting her sleep, of course)
I really did like this episode not despite of how little action happened in it but because it was a slower phase. As it always is nice with a breather between large story arcs. So that restaurant plot point was really good. Where we see our characters going to it in their own way and groups. At first we had our main group where Stark’s holiday is over. And he has to keep up with his girl again. Who is not all to happy that he stay up all night drinking juice and sleeping until afternoon. Then we had Richter, Denken’s group and I liked how Denken bought snacks for the girl. And how Richter pointed out that he acts like his grandfather as he really did act like that for this group this time. And last but not least we have Ubel and who she calls four eyes. Where we learn that Ubel can do the spells of who she empathize with. Which is pretty interesting how she learns spells compared to the traditional way. Later at the restaurant we get the flashback. And I really like how Frieren is ordering lot of food because she knows that this might be the only time that she will taste this flavor of food. Which really put into perspective how such a long lived elf experience and enjoy food. As even if someone would use the same stuff and recipes the provisions will change and taste different with time. As one can not control climate which could affect some of the grown food.
But then the next day we have Kanne and Lawine going around the city. And I loved how Kanne called Lawine cute as she really was. Then asked her to be escorted by her. I really ship these two girls even more now as they have that connection. They later meet up with Frieren’s group as they where picking up snacks for Fern to make her feel better. It was funny how Stark was worried by being surrounded by girls. Then Wirbel and another guy did surround him for real XD. And Fern just approved of him being taken away for a mission by them. So yeah great episode 10/10

All in all it was nice to get some light-heartedness before the drama kicks in again, I'm sure things are going to get heavy with it now being everybody fighting for themselves.

This series checks almost all of the boxes. Madhouse is animating a modern classic. I hope they can keep it up. Frieren has been a 10/10 in my book.

Definitely my favorite chill episode of the anime so far, especially because of the one cute scene between lawine and kanne. I love the idea of kanne trying and since lawine doesn’t know how to react to it, she immediately puts her in a hold😂
Everyone seems to miss that the Stern Waltz from the dance episode was playing as Kanne kneeled and held Lawine's hand, but cuts abruptly as the usual tsundere shenanigans started up.
