    This Exam is very interesting because it's several things at the same time: A survival skills test, a magic combat exam through a Battle Royal, a magic detection test since you would need it to track the bird and the other teams and beasts and also an exam on the broad of magic knowledge since you basically would need some kind of gimmicky magic to catch the bird alive. It was well thought good stuff. Hoping to see Fern and Frieren cracking some skulls next episode. Also Denken honors his name, he is definitely a sharp one, and got interested in his character. His view of Mages in Peacetime needed more as politicians and scientists than combat specialists is compelling.

    This episode has a small detail showing the skill level of first class mages looks like and it add more prove to convince audience that first class mages are the elite of elites.
    Remember around middle of this episode, there's screen the Stilet stopped at the table of a camp right after showing someone is filling up a cup of tea? People who can show no urge in this exam can only be the one who oversees the exam. The main purpose of this scene is to show a first class mage is capable lowering their mana output to a point where's the bird can't detect for at least 2 days!!!

    10/10 episode. The story was smart, the characters were well expanded upon and the end has me absolutely hyped for next week: When you hear Fern go "so desu ka", you know it's gonna go down next time. These fools save for Denken and Übel will realize how much out of their depth they are against Fern and Frieren.

    • @Thrano
      @Thrano 8 месяцев назад +6

      @@AHBrandonReviews You have to remember though: Frieren will not lift a finger more than absolutely necessary. Her saving her teammates would defeat the purpose of the exam, every mage needs to prove that they are worthy themselves.
      Even Frieren unleashing her power against Aura was just to make sure the scales didn't tip in Aura's favour by accident.
      So I suspect we'll see (godly animated) combat scenes of Fern and Frieren doing the bare minimum to stay ahead. Which is okay, just don't go expecting a full-power beatdown by the two.

    About Frieren telling Fern that even basic spells works at anything and everything.
    There is truth in that since just like martial arts and even fighting and what not, it is always the simplest things that are the most easiest and most difficult to do.

    @didsva 8 месяцев назад +6

    This episode of Frieren was really amazing and awesome. In how much though have been put into the world and this exam. Like how the barrier is preventing the water from rivers to flow. Causing the river beds to become paths to walk. And the water to gather in the big central lake. Or shattered in water poodles and pools. Then we also have how the animals behaves. Like the predator monster bird, who lure in prey by mana. Or the little bird which avoids areas of mana as a survival method. This is so great in how they also made that work into the story. Like how some more novices mages did fall prey to the monsters. And how Frieren group did make a plan of capture the bird. By contaminating the water around the testing area with mana. Making the bird more likely to turn to the one place without mana. As Frieren almost completely did conceal her own mana presence.
    And let not forget about what we saw more from the magic side of the episode. With different ideologies regarding how mages should be. As the current guild have nostalgia of the demon king period. Where mages were everywhere, and if you’re not strong or capable enough you can just die in this test. Then we also see how many mages have different individual styles when it comes to their magic. As we saw in the mage fight with Fern group versus another one. Where Fern is using some old school fighting style that a boomer would use. According to the girl she was fighting, but Fern just dissed that off. Saying that is all that is needed to fight off the current generation of mages.
    So all in all one of the best mage exam that I have ever seen

Stille flying faster than the speed of sound is crazy and I love all the strategizing like how magic can be infused into the world. How there are so many kinds of spells. The birds who prey on others reminds me of that one monster from made in abyss. There’s also a variety of magic detection skill between people and animals. I love how freezing the lake caused so much conflict lol. And it’s interesting to see how there’s different styles in spellcasting. I do hope we see Fern use more spells. I do think demons are more likely to use necromancy. If we do see more seasons, I would rather wait so it’s the same staff or director or waiting until there’s a considerable amount of content

    In many sword and sorcery tales I've read, played and watched, mages are meant to be intelligent. They are the ones that can think on complex strategies to supplement their spell casting.
    However, most of the time, mages in manga, anime and games are basically glass cannons. Lots of magical power, but their traditional weakness is that the are simply fragile. And even if they are given fun and unique magics to play with, at the end of the day, they end up being characters that either a) muscle their way with raw power, or b) depend on a gimmick.
    In very few cases we get to see mages being the smart people their Wisdom stats imply they are.
    Frieren's (official) magic exam is one of those cases, where the truly elite show us that it's not just about the power of your spells or the tricks up your sleeve. This is a true "smart" approach. Bold. Creative. Unique.
    And only our favourite elf, who has a solid millennium of experience and know how, can deliver.
    She literally went undetected right until the very end, when it was time to start the fun. Which she did in such a grand fashion (that scene with the animals and monsters just passing by her without noticing her... PERFECTION!!).
    Then there's her gifted apprentice. Fern was given the handicap of only being allowed to use basic spells for this exam. But Fern is Frieren's disciple. That means this is going to get creative, as there may be more than a few ways to use said basic spells in non-orthodox ways; since we all know Fern is also pretty creative herself. Will we see her dance again within a storm of magic? That would seriously be awesome.
    That's why I like smart stories like this. Because it has you thinking, trying to anticipate what comes next. Because, as you said, no safety nets.
    And it would be a shame to see Fern dying (let's hope not, please; she is a great character with so much untapped potential).

      Here's the spoiler:
      Due to ordinary defense magic more focused on dealing with magic, the physical strength of it has been sacrifice in order to keep a good balance of mana cost, amount of time needed to cast and complexity of it. Thus, modern mages came to conclusion that using magic involved physical mass such as rock is the ways to counter ordinary defense magic.

    While watching the anime I've been really seeing the subtext that I glossed over when reading the manga, that the Northern Continent Mage Association is actively stifling the regrowth of magic in the setting. Frieren remarking on how few mages there are in the world now I initially chalked up to the mass mage extermination during the war, but in retrospect it's obviously in large part due to Serie's - the head of the Association - ideology that represents an active contempt for the mediocre and/or unambitious mages of the world that the number of active mages remains so low. An ideology of which this exam is emblematic of.
    It really is like the Hunter Exams - in difficulty and lethality - but it really shouldn't be at this largely peaceful time in the setting.

    I think Bruce Lee said something like don't worry about the man that has thrown 1000 different punches 1 time, worry about that man that has thrown the same punch 1000 times. That is how I believe Fern's abilities have developed, she might have a smaller repertoire of spells, but she seems totally deadly whenever she uses them. Regarding Frieren, I think even if someone is a faster or more talented Mage, she probably has like a solid century or two of battle experience, I could see her beating pretty much anyone is a real fight.

    Unfortunately in the next exam is explore a dongeon with many mimics and trap, still in group but there is no fighting each other because we fight rhe mimic. and if you hurt enough you can escape the dongeon with golden golem, but still, there are many epic battle.
    In the last exam, it's just talking with sirie to pass the exam, 100% no fighting acquire. Also it'll explain the relation of sirie and frieren. I hope it'll not dissapoint the viewer
    The next adventure after the 1st mage exam is literally amazing, hopefully there's season 2 because i have feeling the 1st mage exam will be the final arc of this season.

      I mean we get some sick fights in the dungeon and any of the smaller fight could be slightly extended to become even more epic than the first stage.
      Just the final one alone should top Fern vs Lugner.

    Another great episode of Frieren imho. It makes sense to me for the test to be this tough cause you'd be expected to be able to handle such situations as a first class mage, but I agree they are being ruthless in proctoring this exam. That said, some great action this episode... I'm looking forward to what I think will be the conclusion of the first in the series of tests in the next one.
