    A thing about this exam that I like is that everyone has the resolve to kill if necessary, but none of them are actually psychopathic killers. Even Ubel who seems the most eager to kill has so far only been shown killing bandits in self defense, which even Kraft mentioned in a previous episode that he can’t fault her for that.

    You know, when I first watched this episode, I thought it was kind of slow-paced relative to others, with lots of characters talking about fighting when they're supposed to be actually fighting. But as I thought back, I realized, no, these characters are well aware that they're supposed to be fighting and are consciously choosing to talk instead. Most notably Wirbel, Frieren, and Denken. And I guess also Fern, who could have taken a more violent approach to rescuing Uebel from Wirbel and chose not to.

    What I love about this arc is different from what we get in other arcs. In the Aura Arc, we get a first real look at how humanoid demons work in the world of Frieren, and it's fascinating, as well as some world building, some wonderful action, and some Frieren backstory.
    This arc has a bit of all of that (minus the demon analysis), but the best thing it does is introduce us to some wonderful, complex characters. None of them will be supplanting any of our party members for plot importance, but most of them are well-rounded, interesting, and fairly unique, not just within this story, but compared to characters in other works as well. The author of Frieren really has a knack for doing things just enough like other writers that you're lulled into a comforting sense of the ordinary, but there's always a bit of the unexpected to shake things up and make things memorable.
    I swear, the more of this I see the more I love it, and I'm already an up-to-date weekly reader of the manga.

    This magic tournament arc is incredible.
    Ubel against Wirbel was cool to watch. She has slashing attacks that you can't predict and it was doing quite a bit of damage and then Wirbel caught them in a cool spell but if he isn't watching their whole body it's not very useful but in a one on one it definitely is like a cheek mate spell.
    Unfortunately for him Fern is a great mage and also a great liar that even Ubel was snickering at her attempt.
    I almost thought she did kill his party member but she just lied her way out of it and it was really clever play.
    There's so much to discuss about this episode like Damon against Frieren and what that fight is gonna look like.
    That guy was cold in the last episode but in this one he is much more collected and not as insane as I thought he'd be... His partner though... He's insane... He wants to kill 2 kids for his own selfish gains but like the thumbnail says power indeed does corrupt the soul.
    That wish is very tempting to take with a spell of whatever you can probably think of.
    Frieren would definitely be interested if it was the old her.
    Don't feel like writing this for too long but I really loved the episode as always since you can't really pick a favourite episode but this arc is insane thus far.
    Great review Brandon.

    I think this changes the significance of what Denken did last episode. When they found the dead team, he checked the blood first to determine if they were still alive. Had they been alive, I suspect he would have risked triggering the monster bird's trap. But since they were dead It just wasn't worth it to risk his team's lives. Just a matter of practicality. I'm pretty sure he would also have intervened had they walked on that team being attacked. As Denken puts it, the title isn't worth human lives.

    Next week I imagine we might see a sakuga fest with the battle. I will say this has to be the best produced anime in the past few years. You would be hard pressed to find an issue in the animation. It was interesting when we learned more about Wirbel. Genau intentionally rigged the exam with those damn birds lol. Sense, the other exam proctor, calls him out on it despite him rationalizing how luck and harsh conditions are necessary for first class mages. Ubel is an interesting character and the characters are deeper than expected. There’s a lot of unnecessary killing discussion here. And I appreciate the series for being dark and real without being edgy per se. It strikes a good balance. And the story will never have characters over stay their welcome or they will have them stay for however necessary they are. I can see this exam being the rest of this cour although I wonder who will reach first class. Presumably both Frieren and Fern should although I can see only Fern becoming first class with Frieren not caring since it’s just a title. Also the first class exam is definitely a scheme set up by Serie lol. Also I think it’s interesting to note how Ehre did mention something about her grandfather also being in this exam too

    On the subject of luck, I have heard it said that the best at something thend to make their own luck and Frieren definately does that through the series and i have a feeling we are going to see it next episode to.
    Must remember not to play poker with Fern because she's clearly good at the bluff.
    I have a feeling Lawine and Kanne are actually going to put Richter out the game or at least hold him up till Frieren turns up, like i know he's powerful and the two are about as stable as nitroglycerin, but they do have the numbers advantage and both of them are good at working together, like Frieren did say their team work was good and she says so they have to be good.
    Also personal note but i would rather like a spin off with Lawine and Kanne i think it would be intresting and certianly funny.

    What a lovely episode I really did love all of the interesting discussion and interaction in it. Like some of the guys where not cold hearted dudes especially Wirbel and Denken. As Wirbel seems like he could be a psycho but he is actually a sweetheart deep down. Just fighting demons and protecting the northern lands so that his old love interest. Could one day return to him as her family moved away out of security concerns. But he still is able to kill anyone including women and children if he really needs too. Which makes his morality so much more complex. Also seeing how the northern lands sometimes use child soldiers was pretty brutal. Then we had Denken who was strongly against killing the kids mages in Frieren’s party. As he deemed that unnecessary unlike his teammate. He thought that just putting them under a sleep spell would be enough. So despite Denken seeming very cold and calculating he still care about the life of other people.
    But then I also loved seeing the magic used in this episode as well. Like how Fern overwhelmed Ehme with her magical blasts until she could not take it anymore. Then Wirbel spell was pretty good as well as he could bind one creature with it. But only if he did maintain eye contact with it. Which reminded me about the weeping angels from doctor Who. Then we also saw how good Fern was at lying to him that she killed his teammate. Thus making him give up and walk away on the spot there.

  • @jmhaces
    @jmhaces 5 месяцев назад +2

    This show does such a great job of making characters three-dimensional, like when Übel backs down from insisting on fighting Wirbel as he's leaving because Fern tells her to cool off and she acknowledges that Fern's right and complies even though she clearly wanted to fight him and she would probably have done it if Fern hadn't said anything. So Wirbel is a killer who only kills when necessary and is actually far more heroic and kind than he lets on, and Übel is a psychopath who can be reasonable given the context. Other shows wouldn't have given those two characters that level of depth given the archetypes they represent. I also loved how they established just how powerful the two First Level mages who are the test's proctors are just by showing them having tea discussing the test while a couple of stilles flutter around their little camp and even perch on the woman proctor completely unbothered by these powerful mages' mana because they're roughly as skilled at controlling it as Frieren and Fern.

    So Denken, Richter and Laufen have already lost. Fern lying about killing Ehre was cute though, like nobody believed that. But Wirbel seems to be too idealistic to see through it. He obviously has seen death but it has not yet fully corrupted his morals yet. Unlike Übel. Übel is capital E - Evil.
    Missing Stark a little though, but I get why he doesn't play a role in this.
    This arc is shaping up to be better than I would've imagined when the exams were first mentioned. Bet the finale will be Fern fighting Übel to the death, learning the weight of killing a person for the first time ever, that would only make sense as logical character development.

Allowing mages deaths because that's all they were worth seems to be an odd reason to me, especially when a lot of it seems to be the younger ones. to clarify serie and her magic. she has the most spells of the human school of magic (hence her title as the living grimoire), there's another school of magic that's called goddess magic and only priests (implied to be chosen by the goddess) can use that school of magic beyond basic spells. it's also vaguely mentioned that barely any goddess magic has been deciphered from her scrolls/texts.

    • @kpetalis
      @kpetalis 5 месяцев назад +1

      True but a small correction, it's not human magic. It's Elf magic. Serie is the oldest mage in the world and she was teaching magic when humans didn't even know what magic is.
      Human magic is nothing more than a euphemism used to describe the magic that the humanoid races use, meaning Elves, humans and dwarves. Humans in lore learned magic from the Elves, so Serie could be seen as the progenitor of the magic that the humans learned from Flamme, since Flamme (spoiler)...........
      was Serie's student. And according to Serie not even her best student if I'm not mistaken.

Serie is described to know almost every single spell known to humanity, that's it, that's what the manga says. Then we also have the magic of the goddess whose scripts have barely been deciphered by humanity. It's not another school of magic.
