Perfection...exactly how my mom & dad made it when i was growing up. Yes i said "mom AND dad" because they loved one another the way a husband and wife SHOULD. They both loved cooking together, they both worked hard, and were both amazing parents and i lost them both last year 5 month apart 💔 😢 Thank you for this recipe.
@ least they are together. They are probably watching over you. You will always miss them. But you have lovely memories & will be with them when it is time. God bless.
Thanks so much for sharing. My mom taught herself how to cook and put a meal on the table every night I lived there. Taught myself to cook and realized how hard she worked every day.
Brad Venisnik feeding a family everyday is no small task, that is for sure. I too am a self taught cook. I really appreciate your taking the time to watch and comment. Be blessed.👍
Hi, I just came across your channel last week. I saved this to my “Recipes” list - I made it today and it’s as wonderful as you say!! I love love it , the simple way. I prefer it simple. If I ever have anyone over and serve it I will have dishes on the table they can “add” if they like, as you suggested. Thank you so much for your videos. I’m “alone” same as you- 34 years. My 2 sons are 37 & 40. I raised them alone… I didn’t have family left either, while I worked as a nurse.. often long hours. I was so busy with my sons, their activities I never “dated” , had friends over- nothing. I was simply exhausted most of the time. So I never had time for cooking what I’d learned very young. I’m semi retired, still work 2 days a week. And like you, I’m quite frugal. My sons are as well. Lol We live way below our means! Have a good day!
I can’t thank you enough for sharing a part of your life with us! You are amazing! I hope you know. I am so glad the video was helpful to you. Your kind words mean so much. I’m so very glad you are here.
We started serving the bacon and cheese as a side to our homemade soups too. LOL It makes the rewarming the leftover soup much nicer. My husband is the soup maker in the family. He makes the BEST soup ever!
I'm 67 years old and this is exactly the way my grandma made potato soup.....so yummy....good with "rivels"and bacon too...I always thicken mine with instant potatoes.....tastes delicious...
I to do to rivels in my soup and chicken flavoring in the broth like knorr. It is good I must agree with bacon but when my daughter was little the only way I could get her to eat it was with the chicken flavoring
I was looking for a simple potato soup and I came across your site. I didn't have any frozen veggies or evaporated milk so I made do with what I had in the fridge and the pantry. It was delicious. I used milk but found it was a little thin for me. Since then I have made it three times with all the veggies and the evaporated milk and it is fabulous. Yesterday I made another batch and had it for supper and then again for today's lunch and I expect I will have it for supper again. Your recipes are so simple to follow and don't require that you run out and buy a lot of expensive ingredients that you may only use once. You have a new subscriber. Thanks so much and all the best for the holiday season.
I am not a potato soup eater. I made this version last night. I so enjoyed it. I will eat this!!! It was great. I am going to keep watching to see what you cook. To expand our eating!!!
I make my potato soup similarly but I also add a few tablespoons of instant potatoes to thicken....then sour cream, bacon and cheese...served with garlic toast. So yummy and inexpensive...reheats nicely too. Thanks for reminding me that it's time to make it again!
This is EXACTLY the potato soup I grew up eating. I make it this way and a "thick" way. Just depends what I'm in the mood for but boy.....does this bring back memories of my childhood.
Just the way I make mine but I use an immersion blender to blend just a little bit to thicken, still leaving chunks. I love the celery and celery seed in it.
The recipe is definitely a keeper, but judging by the look of this ambrosia, I would say it would have a lifespan of....oh, probably about ten minutes. MMMMM! Thanks for sharing this recipe!
I've made potato soup the same way as you do for years. I think I'll try the croutons with it. They look good. My husband always wants cornbread with it.
So loving your videos..I am going to start sending my friends over this way that struggle sometimes with basic meal prep and thinking they can't make something from scratch. You are an excellent teacher!
Cooking with Sonya thank you so much. I try to keep it simple. I started this for my grandkids and then I realized this is good information that might be useful to others. Thanks for the encouragement.❤
it is cold tonight is going to be. colder tomorrow here in Houston Texas and you just talked me into making some potato soup and cornbread thank you so much
"Becuse pepper... is goood!" Hahaha I love the way you talk! Here in the south of Chile we have like 50 kinds of native potatoes, but my grandmither, who was irish, made this soup with the yellow one, very creamy and strong flavored. We call that "evaporated milk", best one around is from Argentina. Cheers!
Add some frozen vegetables too, lol. It looks good the way it is. I like the way you cook. Thanks for sharing your recipes and videos. I hope you have a blessed week.
From one Iowan to another I must say I make my potato soup the very same way you do! This is the same way my Mother made hers and my Grandmother too! Matter of fact potato soup was our comfort food when any of Grandma’s Grandchildren were sick! I have passed that down to my children when they weren’t feeling well. Using a can of evaporated milk is the best ingredient to add to the boiling potato water and using lots of onion and some celery! Many blessings! Bobbie W.
I agree with you Bobbie, I have made this for my kids over 20 years when they were just coming off a stomach virus or some nasty bug and just starting back with solid food. In those situations I reduced the milk and kept it very light. Of course you don't have to do that if you're healthy you can add more milk or cheese or whatever you like. But for kids who are recovering from a bug or a fever this is a great way to get their tummies started back with food. It is very easy on their stomachs and tasty too.
I have been looking for a good old fashioned potato soup. This is gonna be it. Wish restaurants would make it this way. I do not like all the toppings they put in it. Just like grandma used to make. Thanks so much ❤️❤️
Robin Whiddon I agree Robin. I like the simplicity of this old fashioned soup. In a way, it’s kind of comforting. Thank you for your kind comment. Be Blessed dear.❤️
Thank you for this video. It is surprising that today butter is expensive and potatoes are the inexpenaive ingredient. When people kept cows, milk and butter were readily available. I enjoy seeing people make recipes from the past as it shows us how good food can be with easy to obtain ingredients. I will try this!
I just found your channel...I love potato soup! I always add can evaporated milk to mine also... and about a cup of regular milk... I thicken mine with a little flour & can milk whisk and pour into my potato soup... I also add chopped onions, and butter while boiling the potatoes...
Thank you for this lovely and easy recipe. Many RUclips potato soup recipes try to copy restaurants but they are so full of fat you really have to watch the calories! My mother made potato soup that was so simple and good, you could eat bowl after bowl and not worry about your health! Lol thank you for sharing! Looking forward to more recipes.:)
daris G. Thank you for your kind comment. I agree with you wholeheartedly. Potato soup is so simple and humble yet full of flavor. I find it very comforting to eat a hearty bowl with little else. ❤️
I like it that way cause it’s light and not all that butter and heavy cream 💕 That’s the old traditional way. 🙏 Especially when you didn’t have much money. Thank you 🌹❤️🙏
This is how I make it too. I started using evaporated milk decades ago b/c it is shelf stable, and if I have potatoes on hand I can make soup easily. And I think the evap milk makes it creamier too. Sometimes, instead of salt, I like to use some chicken bouillon, which is salty, b/c it gives it another layer of flavor. I make pea dumplings the same way too, but I do thicken it with cornstarch.
Potato soup: potatoes, chopped celery, chopped onion, water, can of evaporated milk, 1/2 stick of butter, celery salt, pepper. Serve with croutons or sour cream.
I love the homemade croutons on top. I am going to make this today as I have some french bread that needs to be toasted into croutons. Thank you for a wonderful good ole fashioned recipe.
Me and my 76 year old mother glean the potato field every other year here in Maine. The tractor usually stops and he tells us where he left some rows for us . I am still waiting for your fudge to cool. I think I’ll make this for Sunday dinner for myself. It’s February and I’m still eating potatoes from last year.
What a wonderful tradition for you and your mom. I once worked with a gentleman who had Maine potatoes shipped to him every year because he was from there and said they were the best. Thank you Bradley for your comment. I hope you enjoyed your potato soup.
That almost like my mama taught . She made a lil rue with flour and milk it would thicken some and a pinch of corn meal . It was awsome. Yours look good . Gonna try yours . Thanks. 🙋♀️
The best potato soup I've ever had was my Mother's Depression Potato Soup...during the Great Depression of the 30's and 40's. Before she died in 1957, she told me how she made it. I still make it that way. It was potato's cooked in milk with a little bit of onion if she had it. The milk came from the cow in the barn. The potatoes were dug up from the field. I have to buy everything from the store...it's good, but not as good as hers. However, I will try your soup later in the week.
ethel newberry Thank you for sharing your mothers depression potato soup. I love hearing about other peoples “food memories” because they usually involve people, places and experiences that are well loved. It always seems the simplest food is the best food. Thanks for taking the time to share your memory with me.❤️
Thanks Sheryl. This is all you do to make the croutons. Cut up slices of bread in to cubes. Stale or old bread works well for this. Melt some butter in a skillet. Toss the bread cubes in the butter until well coated. On a low heat, stir the cubes until they are golden brown and crispy the way you like them. You can add more butter during the process if you like. I hope this helps.
I prefer to saute the onion and the potato with butter first. I think it what gives the flavour specially if I'm not using any broth. some additional veggies: corn or peas. Thanks for sharing :)
I don't like mine with onions or celery. I found a recipe that uses chicken bouillon cubes (2) in the water you boil the potatoes in and half and half cream added instead of evaporated milk. I did not have bouillon cubes when I tried the recipe so I used what I did have, which was fat-free chicken stock. The recipe also used butter. The only seasoning was salt and pepper. I personally like the taste of evaporated milk better than the half and half. To thicken the sauce a little, the recipe added cornstarch. I like Sharon Allen's idea for thickening with instant potatoes, so I will try that next time to see if I like the taste. The cornstarch worked well and tasted good, but who knows, the instant potatoes may be even better. All in all, the recipe was very simple, quick and tasty. The most labor intensive part was peeling and dicing the potatoes.
My secret is prepared mustard, about a spoonful to taste to the pot just in the last few minutes of cooking. Yellow or fancy depending how strong a taste you want.
I make potato soup with a ham bone that I have left from one of my meals . I boil the ham bone for about two hour then I take it out the pot and pull the meat off of it and add the meat back to the pot along with the potatoes, scallions onions, parsley , celery, a little salt and pepper . You can add the seasonings ( of your choice) and after the potatoes have finished cooking I will then add my milk very slowly . next I turn down the burner to medium low , Next Bake yourself a loaf of five cheese bread . Bon appetit !
@@elizabethcope1502 the flavor would not matter to me. Had Covid-19 and cannot taste the flavor. I really cannot taste food anymore. Just a bitter aftermath. Cannot smell either. I could sit down on a dead decomposing horse and eat my lunch and the smell would not bother me. The doctor said being the length of time it has been in all probability my smell and taste will never return. I sure wish that I had gotten vaccinated but I was one of the hard headed people that did not.
@@elizabethcope1502 before my COVID-19 I was a lover of Van Camp pork n beans. I hate them now because of the bitter aftertaste they leave. The aftertaste is so terrible it is almost worth not eating. Black coffee is the only thing that is not terrible. Put creamer and sugar forget it. Rest of my life I will not be able to taste or smell.
great sounding recipe, i have eaten Outback's tater soup but i don't remember them having the SKIN on the potatoes???? You leave the skin on???? just wondering, great video, well done
one followup, maybe if you cut back on the amount of water you add you could COMFORTABLY add all the taters?..............lol...................just a thought...............
Looks very tasty, but the recipe is a bit " matter of fact " could use a bit more of information on quantity of ingredients and approximate cooking time ... Cheers.
Thanks Seamus! I know it is but I’ve made it for so many years. I never had a recipe and I never came up with on. Perhaps I will try to do that. Cheers to you as well.
Mark Walters Iowa is pretty typical of the Midwest in general. I am an Iowa transplant a few years ago but grew up primarily in the Midwest. Thanks for stopping by.
That’s a good question Glen. This soup is the way my mom made it. I’m sure her mom made it the same. As a kid, we had poor times. Chicken broth was something we didn’t always have and when we did it was used for other things such as chicken and noodles for Sunday dinner. This is the soup I grew up on and this is the soup I prefer. I see nothing wrong with using chicken broth if that is your preference. Thanks for asking.
I simply cut my bread of choice into cubes, stale bread is perfect. Toss with oil or butter and seasoning if you wish.place in a skillet or baking pan. You can make them on top of the stove or in the oven at 350 degrees. Toss frequently and watch closely. Thanks for the question.

Never thought of using instant potato mix to thicken the soup
My secret is prepared mustard, about a spoonful to taste to the pot just in the last few minutes of cooking. Yellow or fancy depending how strong a taste you want.
That sounds awesome thank you for sharing. I will definitely give that a try. I love mustard.
yum!
I just subscribed
also, thank you, I think your talking just to me with your encouragement!!
Julie Anne Price thank you so much. I appreciate your comments. I'm glad that I can be an encouragement. We all need that.
Sorry to hear about your husband. I'm sure he would've loved the soup :)
Thank you so much!
Bon appetit !
angelina garrett that sounds fabulous. Thanks for sharing!👍
I make mine that way, although I also add kale to it.
Try adding a can of corn and a can of creamed corn for a chowder
Nanette Karadas that sounds good. Thanks!👍
Yummy..But I add bacon bits to mine...Thanks for sharing.
Chuck Allen Poore sounds delicious! Thanks for stopping by. 👍
Too much water. After the potatoes are cooked drain some of the water before adding ingredients. It’s awesome soup. Thanks for the video.
John Davis thank you John.👍
Simmering the water down increases the flavor. God bless.
You leave the skin on???? just wondering, great video, well done
one followup, maybe if you cut back on the amount of water you add you could COMFORTABLY add all the taters?..............lol...................just a thought...............
ray lowery Thanks for asking. I do peel my potatoes for potato soup.
canned milk is evaporated milk?
Back in the day we just called it canned milk but it is the same. Thanks for stopping by!
"I got a blow it first, you don't mind right?" Hahahahaha But a great recipe I agree!
Keri Eagle lol thank you! Great last name. That’s my maiden name.
I will add some instant mashed potatoes to thicken and flavor the broth.
@@simplefoodsimplelife9632 Looks scrumptious, perhaps a bit of experimentation is in order Cheers
Add some shredded carrots for color!!! Garnish with bacon bits
Potato soup cornbread you have a meal.
Helen Boula indeed. 👍
You can mash a small portion of the potatoes to thicken the soup!
Jo Gladden that would be lovely. 👍
I'm thinking of adding 6 ounces of cream cheese. What do you think?
I've made this three times and loved it. Just wonder about the cream cheese thought.
I say go for it!
@simplefoodsimplelife9632 i do have a problem with my potatoes getting done a bit sooner than my celery and onions.
Iowa strikes me as having good downdo-earth people. Except for the fact that I am poor, I think I would love living there.
Mark Walters Iowa is pretty typical of the Midwest in general. I am an Iowa transplant a few years ago but grew up primarily in the Midwest. Thanks for stopping by.
Perhaps add some chicken bullion for more flavor?
Possibly apple in it ?
I say why not. It’s your soup add in whatever pleases you.
Can you can potato soup ?
Vicki jenkins I have never tried it. I know that some can potato’s. Thanks for asking. 👍
Chicken base for extra taste.
My mom's soup was great and it was only potatoes, whole milk, onions and lots of butter.
Lol it's funny you say it's better than your mom's, I say the same about mine.
Cherie Crews my mom thought mine was better than hers also. ❤️
Why would you use water instead of chicken broth?
That’s a good question Glen. This soup is the way my mom made it. I’m sure her mom made it the same. As a kid, we had poor times. Chicken broth was something we didn’t always have and when we did it was used for other things such as chicken and noodles for Sunday dinner. This is the soup I grew up on and this is the soup I prefer. I see nothing wrong with using chicken broth if that is your preference. Thanks for asking.
How do make croutons?
I simply cut my bread of choice into cubes, stale bread is perfect. Toss with oil or butter and seasoning if you wish.place in a skillet or baking pan. You can make them on top of the stove or in the oven at 350 degrees. Toss frequently and watch closely. Thanks for the question.
SIMPLE FOOD SIMPLE LIFE thank you very much
janefromtennessee you are very welcome!
SANDWICH BREAD RIP IT INTO SMALL PIECES WHAT EVER YUWANT SIZE THAT IS AND PUT ON A COOKIE SHEET IN OVEN 350 TILL BROWN
Don't use water use chicken broth to boil your potatoes in.
Helen Boula sounds delicious!
Did you use onions?......(or leeks?)
vicky stevenson I use onions.
Good plan but too much water Potato soup should not be watery
azimmey personally I prefer a thinner potato soup. To each his own. Thanks for watching.
azimmey sure it can have a lighter broth. There are hundreds of recipes from around the world.
