My mother taught me to make potato soup..I still make it and my husband always says I make the best he's ever eaten. I have this past year ventured it and used Leeks as well in it.
In regard to "whippings"... my mom kept a fly swater handy, and if she was outside she had a peach tree switch she'd use. This was not abuse, it was an attitude adjustment or behavior corrector .... it didn't take but one good swat to correct the situation

Tammy, one time when I was about 8 years old, my momma whipped me and my sister with an old electric extension cord that she found outside on the ground. We had been using it as a jump rope. I was so fragile and skinny...I will never forget that day as long as I live. She always whipped us on our bare legs. Totally not nessasary! I don't like my momma because of that. I never had to whip my daughter. I spanked her with the palm of my hand on her clothed tush. I can only remember having to swat her 2 times all of her childhood. She is a wonderful daughter. I love her.

Sorry people, but it was abuse. When I was six but about the size of a 3 yo, I didn’t want to go to school because I’d been bullied on the way home the day before. My dad whipped off his leather belt, grabbed me by one arm and hit me with every step I took, the entire six blocks to school, the coward stopped short of walking me to the play ground where we lined up to go into our classrooms. On the way to school people in cars passed by, but not one person stopped or even looked in our direction. There were no visits to the nurses office or principal’s office, no call to the police department. By the time I left school that day the bruises were already appearing. I’m 80, and I can absolutely remember that like it was yesterday, it was absolutely abuse. What a legacy to leave ones child.

I am going to try making your potato soup very soon. Thank you for the tip about the softer potatoes that make your whipped potatoes sticky! I didn't know that! And I remember being spanked when we were bad. Best life lessons your parents could give you! I'm afraid that the problem with kids today is the sad lacking of being spanked (whipped) or disciplined much at all, frankly. Now we have a generation or more of people who feel entitled, and like the world owes them something. Very sad, but the saying 'Reap what you sow" comes to mind. Anyway, thank you for the great recipe! Looks delish!

My dad once told my brother to go outside & cut his own switch. Well, he cut the whole bush down 'cause he thought one would be too small & make dad madder or one would be too big & hurt more 😂🤣. My dad got so tickled, he didn't get a whippin' after all . Got my behind spanked pretty much on a daily basis & deserved every one. Had nothing but respect for both my parents 😊.

I can count on my fingers how many switches or slaps I may have gotten not many... What I did get was parents who raised me in the Lord, reading the Bible, Praying, and Respect of Parents and Elders.
Doing unto others a big deal in my household.
Reap what you sow, more than you sow, later than you sow.
Children need correction. You love them… God corrects his children because He loves us. ❤

    Just a little story
when I was in the second grade. I walked home with another little girl who lived across from the school instead of doing what I was supposed to do. Teachers, parents, and the law were all looking for me. When they finally found me my dad took a switch to my legs to where blood was at the surface of the skin now some may call that abuse but I don't. I call it my dad loving me. Did it hurt? I'm sure it did I don't remember the pain. What I do remember is my parents holding each other crying because they found their little girl. Their worst nightmare didn't come true.! I am now 64 and my dad never whipped me again why because I never give him another reason to why because I loved him as much as he did me end of story.

Yes right on Tammy I was raised by ABSOLUTELY GREAT PARENT'S and they used a hickory switched which sometimes was called hickory tea like it you don't want some hickory tea you better do what you are told to do lol and we knew to do it right then . I'm 74 years old and I also raised my 4 children the same way and I raised 2 of my grandchildren the same and never had any problems with any of them and I am very thankful for how I was brought up and my children are thankful for how i tought them . If More people would believe what the BIBLE Says about spare the rod spoil the child then there would certainly be a lot less crime's in this world. Thank you Tammy God l you and your family ❤

More apple pie filling and apple butter from our orchard, making and canning cushaw squash soup and canning cushaw squash for later. I'm going to make cushaw squash pie. Cushaw squash is the biggest variety of squash I've ever grown and I got 9 to use up. I'm giving some to friends too. I'm canning chili today. My father made the best potato soup that I ever ate. We were sent out to a bush in the yard in summer to pick our own switches sometimes. 😅 I don't remember any marks on the legs. But we were disciplined. Fond memories actually. And now about my "lifesaver" potato soup.. made with leeks, bacon and cheese. I made a big pot right before a snowstorm that we had no idea it was going to take 3 days to get roads clear enough to drive out to the store again.. About 16-20" deep.. our 1st time in the Midwest! 😮 My husband and another male cousin drove 2 aunts around town in their nicer car and they picked up groceries for everybody they could.. and by then a fabric shop was open ..so they got more things for sewing. 😊 ❄️☃️⛄

My stepfather believed it doesn't make a difference of what house you did the wrong in if you break the rules That deserves a whippen Then you deserve it in both households!!! My dad and stepmother was not like that. The boy it's my stepfather found out he was He was a navy man, A navy Seal a c3 Warrant officer and he wasn't in command of people! And he raised us three kids as if we were one of his military men No kidding, every Saturday we had something called field day.Our Friends always thought that was something fun We did.
But it was not, It was the quarter bounce on the bed And the drawer and closet check and people That were military would know what that Means and if one was wrong/ in wrong pkace Then everything was pulled Down/ dumpped
Into the middle of the floor from the drawers and the closet And you started over!!! Im almost 61 now and And I've never been in trouble and neither has my 2 brothers.

We called it Hickory Tea ! You go get a switch, and it better not be too small or else. We always used a mixer, you just couldn't cut the potatoes into little pieces because too much starch released too quick and they would turn out sticky

I make my with chunky potatoes cuz I love potatoes. Put the potatoes in water to boil with a bit of bacon grease and onion. I like green onions in mine but you can boil with regular onion. Salt and pepper to taste. Boil until potatoes are done and water is basically all gone. Add lots of butter and milk and enjoy. Easy and tastes great. My grandma always made potato soup when we were sick and it always made me feel better

Tammy, I know exactly what you mean when you say “whipped” your children. Many today may not, I say “spanked” as it doesn’t sound as harsh but it gets the point across. As an aunt only, I never spanked my nieces and nephews, the parents took care of discipline. As for the potatoes, creamed to me is small diced pieces cooked in a white sauce. Mashed potatoes are either mashed with a potato masher or mixed with a mixer. Avocado oil doesn’t add a taste like olive does, so I use it when I am making something sweet. Chris is correct, we are south GA. Love how you renovated your kitchen.

I have never made potato soup and I've never peeled a pumpkin so I learned a bit today. 😊 That soup looks like such a comforting dish and if I ever decide to make it, I will use your recipe.
And yes ma'am, I remember a switch. And a belt, and the back side of a large clothing brush, or a wooden spoon or a fly swatter 😂😂. Sounds like I was abused, but quite the contrary. Loved too much to be allowed to be disobedient or disrespectful or mean to my younger brothers. And at the age I am now, I am grateful for every lickin' I got because Lord only knows how I'd have turned out if left to my own devices. ❤

I have found that a pumpkin carving kit (you see them in stores around Halloween) is great for cutting pumpkins and other vegetables with hard skins (acorn squash). The kits usually have a scraper that is great for scooping the strings and seeds, and the “knife” isn’t sharp, but does easily saw through the vegetables. I have used my set for years, so that $3 is well worth it.
The potato soup looks delicious (and I like that you don’t have to add bacon, onion and cheese if you don’t want it).

I’ve never used a mixer on my potatoes. I always use a masher and leave some lumps in mine because that’s how my family prefers my mashed potatoes. We also like ours thick with lots of butter and milnot evaporated milk. Lots of salt and pepper…
I love love love potato soup and yours looks so delicious.
I’m sure you’ll have another video before Thanksgiving but just in case I wish you, Chris and the rest of your family a great Thanksgiving… I know there will be a feast prepared at your home. God bless you Tammy and Chris. ❤I absolutely believe in spanking your children. You don’t beat them, you spank their butt or smack their hands. Kids nowadays have no consequences for their actions and it shows.. You can’t say it but I can, you can look around and tell what children have been raised to respect and have boundaries. There’s very few & that makes me sad. And a tad bit angry. If a few smacks on the butt gets rid of this entitlement society then smack away..

For pumpkin put the whole thing in the oven and cook like you would a baked potato. You can cut it in half or how ever if it is too big for oven. Once it is baked everything is soft,The outer skin peels right off ,the seeds and strings are easily scraped off. Then you just mash up pumpkin and use for pie etc. I use the regular pumpkins sold for jack o lanterns instead of buying the more expensive little pie pumpkins .They taste just fine.

Hi Tammy & Chris! Your potato soup is one of the recipes in our meal rotation for those cold weather days. I double or triple the recipe for my crew and keep it warm in a crockpot so they can help themselves when they come in. We served this up yesterday with a big platter of your Sausage Cheese Muffins along with a platter of your Apple Fritters so you know my crew was in mighty tall cotton when it came to having a good, stick to your ribs dinner! My grandmother used hickory switches while my mom used a wooden ruler. She referred to a few smacks with her "board of education" as being "tough love taps!" Both the hickory switches and the "board of education" got the point across, that's for sure! LOL

Only now did I find out that, that was how everyone was disciplined. I swore I would not be that way. I raised my two boys without ever hitting them. My husband did not either. My boys were the most well behaved boys. I got complemented whenever we were out and about. I don’t know if it was just that my boys were born like that and if it would of been different if they had been bad kids. They are now grown men and are still good and I’m still getting complemented ☺️

Potato is my favorite of all soups. I didn’t know that about evaporated milk so I will be buying it more often. It will def keep longer. Thank you sweet lady & you have a dream kitchen! God is good!

I remember those little keen hickory switches and it didn’t hurt me a bit only made me respect my mother even more and made me a better person!
Your potato soup looks really tasty!
You ask what we did today, I went to church this morning and tonight and it was wonderful, and again I’m so thankful for my upbringing and my mom taught us to go to church and live for Jesus!
    May God bless you!

My mom spanked us primarily but dad used the belt on me. Once. Mom used a switch from a tree, a belt, a hair brush, whatever she found but I didn’t get in trouble a lot-thank goodness. Oh yes, she’d slap me. When we had my daughters, I couldn’t stand the thought of spanking them. They are now in their 40’s and they are fine people. And I never slapped them.

Theres a big difference in spankings and beatings, you can spank a child, instead of beating, trust me, i know the difference, i can still hear those switches hitting the skin, the blood, bruises, thats just plain stupid in my book, i do believe in spankings, but what I lived was pure abuse , no way kids deserve that, bk 50 yrs ago and longer, they thought beating a child was the right way, i totally disagree, thats not love, at all, spanking on the butt is totally enough, some dont believe in that, i do believe in hand spankings, not plaited switches, belts, etc, that is abuse, i believe in my heart and soul that God aint smiling when ppl are just beating a child , you got to teach children ,a child's mind has to develop, i never had to beat a child in my life, and they turned out great, spankings when it was needed ,yes, God knows our hearts, and i think God expects us to use our common sense, now, this is MY opinion, idc what anyone elses is, ❤ 🙏❣️💯, im not being hateful in my comment at all, but , we all know this is true,

I use the bacon drippings, along with the bacon, straight into the potato soup, instead of using butter you get that delicious bacon taste.

I fix my potatoes with electric mixer and call them mashed potatoes. I think people use mashed and creamed interchangeably.

I did not know that about the “spongy” potatoes! That is the reason my mashed potatoes come out better than other times! Thanks for the tip Tammy, I always learn something from your videos. My parents used to whip us with whatever was handy. All 5 of us came out to be fine upstanding citizens. Home rule works wonders.

Onion and celery in the potato soup or just celery added. I think it has to have celery in it, that’s potato soup to me.

It may just be this video but I thought you'd like to know the video quality was a bit blurry and Grant too, in places.I imagine they're not all that way so you might want to check your camera. Hope y'all have a nice day and thanks for sharing.
