Because the people making choices about these kind of tv shows think the young adults of today are still in their emo phase. And because the young adults are always complaining and sad with the state of the world, must mean they want to watch a show about where everything is sad....
Yes, like when we are adults we become boring but we want bright colours and fashionable clothes! And it's a shame that with original franchise they were constantly trying to promote it to younger audiences but all they've done it's lost their core audience within time.
@@Azoria_J Rainbow wont learn from their mistakes. The same thing happend with season 8, they keep trying to cater to one audience when it can be for everyone. Winx s8 was soooo childish there was annoying retconning , gross re-designs , and they had a concert ALL THE FRIKIN TIME YOU JUST NAME IT. It was soo overley childish that it really had no substance at all. This on the other hand is the oppisite of s8. This live action has no feel to it . It is just stooo gritty and edgy that its cringe. The whole point of winx was 5-6 girls going on adventures and the show had bright colours while trying to be realistic to the veiwers. Why can winx be like that ?. If u have seen Mlp , mlb , she-ra , Su YOU NAME IT. Animation is for all audiences...I rest my case.
@@Azoria_J We jave been asking for winx for an older audience for YEARS and they give us this and they have messed it up. The only thing they can do is to make winx for all audiences. If they dont mannage to pull that off i think Winx Club should come to an end.
Am I the only one who feels that it’s kind of weird that Bloom wears red? She never ever wears red in the series, like at all. In the first two seasons she purposely wore blue with yellow accents, and blue with pink accents to symbolize her comfort with her power. In Fate they automatically just said, “lmao fire power, red!”. Seriously, what? edit: why did this blow up.
also wich upsets me with the curvy character terra, they dont give her a style, They just gave the most baisc outfits, its good that they try to inculde diffrent body types, but they should inculde them looking good and not like that
Agreed. Also incredibly annoying that not only do they take Flora away, but they replace her with a character with such a colourless palette. Flora represented nature in all of it's vibrancy, with pinks, greens, yellows etc. How does grey and black represent nature??
@@maymjs1094 Basically they have ruined every characters' design and colour palette. Where is Bloom's laidback casual jeans? Where's Stella's bright and bold fashion sense? Where are Flora's colourful and flowery clothes? Where are Musa's hair buns? Where's Aisha's cool hipster fashion? And where the hell is Techna?? If they wanted to completely rebrand winx, why not make these girls the daughters or granddaughters of the Winx? It would explain the similarities and the differences enough to be passable. And I love Aisha, but it feels incredibly rude that she is present while Techna is missing and Flora has been recreated. Since Aisha was introduced in season 2. Are they going to miss Timmy out and have Helia, who again wasn't introduced until season 2. It just feels very insulting to both the characters and the fans! Sorry, I find out about this, this morning and have gone through many different emotions. Now I have just settled in frustration at the creators.
@@midnightfox3157 i used to pretend to be stella in 1st grade and blind my teachers ugh she was literally my idol i wanted to be a fashion designer until 7th grade and i genuniely still enjoy making and selling clothes its mostly a hobby now but yea-
Yesss, and sporty looks have been in fashion for the past 2-3 years, it’s not as if they could not make her sporty style look trendy...They could have came up with better outfits. I keep on hoping it’s a fever dream and the outfits will not be like that on the actual show, but then I remember the teaser/trailer is supposed to show the most appealing images...😭
She was my favourite as a kid cuz I loved her spunky and compassionate personality. I thought she was also beautiful in design. She’s got none of that here.
To me Musa is more than just "asian-coded". Like her home country and their traditional outfits and architeture and etc are all based on Asia/China. Like that's even beyond Flora being darker-skinned and based on J-Lo, she really is established as being from the show's equivalent of a real life asian country.
I feel like the concept would fit so, *so* much better if they made the live-action series a Trix spin-off. The dark feel & aesthetic would fit it so much better.
I think the biggest issue is the whitewashing of Flora and Musa They cut out important characters to me The trix are one person , the fairies don't have wings , no Ms Faragonda at the school , the stuff with blooms parents was pretty dark in season one It's a mess
@@joshroberts1936 I know. A Trix spin-off would have none of these problems. The Trix are all canonically white. They wouldn’t even have to worry about including the Cloud Tower principal, as the Trix were expelled in season 1.
That would be so cool a trix series this would work so good maby it could be a show about before they meet the winx so we could explore the characters more !
That actually is a really good idea and that teaser would fit the trix better maybe even give us more info on how they became sisters and what made them "evil"
Also tecna is coded to be on the spectrum, a big part of her story arc is learning to communicate with others, to understand her feelings and is never coded as a bad thing or a flaw just a part who she is. Tecna is my favourite because in a world that often makes invisible autism or coded as a flaw that must be hide at all cost, tecna show us that is just a part of who we are and embracing it will make us grow and be happier at the end.
yes thank you!! i could always see myself in tecna *because* she was autistic-coded and there wasn't a lot of rep (let alone positive rep) in other shows i watched. it makes me really sad to see they got rid of her.
The fact that Netflix feels like they have to make a show edgy and dark for it to pander to an older audience is baffling and frankly ignorant to me. It's as if they haven't seen any anime. Look at series like My Hero Academia, Demon slayer and Toilet bound Hanako-kun, all of these series have bright colours and can appear more 'childish' due to those factors. But they both tackle much darker topics and most of the fans of these series are teenagers to adults. They could've kept everything that made winx winx, but added some topics that would appeal to a much older audience instead of changing the show into something else entirely.
I hate that so much! Now everything needs to be dark because this is what adult and smart people love. I don't ****ing think so. I am 25 years old and I love Winx as colorful, magical fairys.
Puella Magi Madoka Magica proves to be an extremely good example. Its not only also about magical girls, also about pretty transformations and, more important, the price and meaning of becoming a magical girl and the past of them and the consequences of every decision made. Having sex, blood, swearing, violence and more its not mature, its "mature" and a false feeling of darker, while pmmm has a deep feeling of a real mature world and, furthermore (and specially considering winx as a 'fairy' show) a feeling of dark magical girls
Not only anime but there are a lot of cartoons too that have vibrant colors that both adults and children enjoy like Adventure time and Steven Universe just to name two.
What totally sucks is that in this day and age they KNEW the implications of whitewashing the characters and they still decided that it was the right decision. I'm not familiar with the netflix show process but I'm guessing a lot of people had to review the cast, storytelling, and changes they were doing and all those people said "yes, this show is good to go". Honestly this is just embarrassing.
Fuck them. I love my asian looking Musa! BRING HER BACK! And my kinda latino-looking Flora too. (I used to think she was tanned...) AND TECNA TOO! Where the hell is she!?
Also for Musas character: They not only whitewashed her, but also changed her powers. Everything about her story is influenced by music and music is a huge part in her life, so changing that as well is a bit off. There - again - was no need for it.
oh wow.... this is shocking! I thought they only did away with their clothes and the wings and their characterisations.... Didn't realise they messed up their powers too! 😂 Musa - Music is a perfect combination; can't believe they changed out something so big!
Winx club in 2000: We have a good cast with diversity so fans from everywhere can see themselves in them. Winx in 2020: You may have one black character, as a threat.
Kids typically don’t care about weight until they’re teenagers because that’s where bullying starts or where adults start commenting on weight more often lol. When I was a child and watched the winx I legit didn’t care how skinny they were
I agree. Also it’s just kinda the art style. When we were younger we used to pretend to be the characters and my friends and I had a lot of different weights. Nobody cared about the fact that they looked like that in the show and nobody told someone “you can’t be her cause you’re not skinny enough” either. We cared about the fun the story the magic, the friendship and all that makes winx, winx. But the racial representation on the other hand was important I feel like. As were the personalities. I know we would usually feel closest with the one that was like us. Nobody cared about the weights, but this mattered to us in some way, even if it’s not the way it would as adults. But u know in the way that it just makes children feel like they’re part of if as well.
People do realize that cartoon's traditionally have unrealistic and exaggerated anatomy and that cartoons aren't always going to look "realistic", right? Betty Boop had a small waist and big hips. Jessica Rabbit had aloof, low sleepy, eyelids, big lips, small hands and an hour glass figure. Also, do they really think that children think that all girls walk around with praying mantis like bodies looking like old french design sketches?
The girls have unrealistic giant balloon heads and eyes. :/ it’s always weird to me to focus on their body types when the rest of the character design is ignored. Their heads are literally bigger than their body.
I mean their design was based on model Book in haute couture i think, mannequin or something like(don't know how to say it english) and i think it was cool lol. Didn't care at all, sometimes jokes about it when i grew up but i like it the way it is. Because *that's* Winx artstyle
I'm really annoyed about them making the shows color design so ugly, if they wanted a dark academia setting, THE WITCH SCHOOL WAS RIGHT THERE. imagine if we could have gotten a fairy core, y2k, royalty core design for the fairy school. I personally love the idea of giving the fairies a shiny rose gold makeup look, this is just so dissapointing.
personally I kinda like it. sure im not happy that stella and sky keep getting together and shes a complete bi- but I like it not point of view of some child in a burning building but at birth..

Musa’s actress has been revealed to be fully Caucasian. The whole one quarter Singaporean thing was actually false information, a Winx Club fan debunked this on Twitter. Meaning Netflix casted two FULLY Caucasian women in the place of two woman of color. Edit~ How did this blow up I- this my first time commenting on a vid lmaoo ty for the likes God bless y’all 💕
Who knows maybe with these complaints and for the second season they will recast Must and bring in Flora with a hispanic actress and cast Techna if the fans continue to complain. But then again why watch it if you guys don't want it? Just don't waste your time and show Netflick and this producer that you guys had enough.
In that case, let the crazy toxic SJWs tear and rip apart this live-action Winx. After all, Netflix likes pandering to those people and it's ironic as hell to see the audience they were pandering to all this time to fight back at them. Edit: I am a Singaporean Chinese, and Musa's actor looks too damn European to pass off as a Chinese looking live-action Musa. I could care less about one's ancestry as long as they look like the character they are supposed to act. Even if the character is white and they cast someone who supposedly had a white ancestry but does not look white, I myself would be pretty pissed.
She's always been my favorite. But it was obvious when I was active in the fandom back in 2007-09 that she was the least popular. It was so disappointing when trying to look for Tecna-centric content.
Saying I'm upset is a vast understatement. Winx was my favorite show growing up and I often rewatch the first 3 seasons. Flora was always my favorite character and I will never forgive what they've done to her and Tecna.
For me it was Aisha, musa and tecna XD I also can't bring myself to watched past S4 because the only fought of Daphné back to life i'm sure it won't be good. Fortunaly that Channel confirm that i avoided a bullet😂😂
Honestly Netflix has already destroyed Winx Club and Fate hasn’t even come out yet Edit: Thank you guys for this amount of likes bc tbh I’ve never had this many. Also I’m just waiting to see fate bc I wanna know if Netflix is going to do the same thing that the Nickelodeon version of Winx Club did and make everything about Bloom and completely shut out the other girls
I feel like this show would do fine if it wasn't called Winx. Like I can't stand the idea that my Winx became...well, that. But if it was a completely separate show, where the characters weren't named after the main characters of Winx Club, I'd totally watch it. But Winx isn't Winx without Flora and Tecna. Plus, Stella would never, ever allow this kind of fashion!
Yeah, I think it would have been fine if they didn’t try to sell us this as winx. This way we’re just going to compare it to the OG characters and Show. They should have just made up a different cast, they could even BASE it on WINX somewhat. But don’t just say this is it and these are the characters u like so much and oh, also x and x aren’t there anymore lol. Doesn’t mean it would have been great then, but it sure would have been a lot less controversial. 😭
@@akiren1337 I totally agree. They're trying to use childhood nostalgia to get the views. But the thing is even if their target audience for the show is 15/16 +, it doesn't mean the older fans don't want to see the light, magical energy used in the original show ( i think I read somewhere that we won't even get transformation sequences :/... ). Fairies are based on light magic so the whole Riverdale dark academia concept just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe if this was a story with witches as main characters..? You can't just cast out two out of the group and call them Winx Club. I'll watch it anyway, but I'll try to ignore the names and just call it Fate.
Here's some real who are not for kids : Persepolis Fritz the cat Sausage Party South Park La planete sauvage (really ugly tho) Also if anybody interested : The long Long Holiday or Les grandes grandes Vacances .It's about children in 2nd world war it's awesome really
In the beginning of the video, the fact that Iginio said they "had" to make Winx Club more child-like to fit the demographic of today baffles me. Literally anyone can see that if anything, cartoons are maturing and taking risks and teaching lessons you may not have seen as often 15 years ago when Winx Club began.
Exactly!! Avatar the Last Airbender, Steven Universe, Tales of Arcadia, Owl House, even Voltron, all are colorful and deal with many mature topics. (And yes Voltron LD is another dumpster fire but it had high hopes in the beginning and doesn't shy from the fact that War Sucks.)
I mean, looking from an article, he did say that based on calculations, kids above the age of 10 don’t watch cartoons anymore, and he probably didn’t wanted to make it childish, but he had to since preschoolers are now his target audience. Not a lot of older kids watch cartoons as much as they used to.
@@DragonFaerie Or the She Ra reboot that treated themes the previous one didn't without losing the core that made the original popular. If they were going to make a Winx reboot they should have kept the magical girl heart while going to places the original didn't go. I remember Bloom took awhile to get her powers and had this whole character journey to get them, but in the new live action show it seems she gets her powers right away and is right off the bat a powerful fairy.... feels like the live action Mulan in this regard.
I wish y'all would stfu and let them do what they want I enjoyed the live action y'all just live in your own little world like jeez. who even likes a. Show that was literally drawn and animated like imagine. 😂
I need to speak up as an Italian fan of Winx Club who, unfortunately, can give an explanation to all of this. The reason they said so about the "younger audiences" is because Rainbow's collaboration with Rai. Over the past decade Rai obliterated their teenagers "time areas" on their main channels and launched two channels made soley for cartoons: Rai YoYo and Rai Gulp. We used to have span of time during the day where more mature cartoons would be aired on Rai 2 and Rai 3, that whn they used to air Winx Club until season 5. Now, those time span does not exist anymore. As a consequence, Winx Club was moved to Rai YoYo which is yes a channel of cartoons but aimed toward 10- year old children. Because of this, Rainbow probably felt forced to reboot season 8 as a much younger targetted show, otherwise they simply wouldn't have a channel to air it. I hate that direction as much as all the Winx fanbase, but I can't entirely blame Rainbow for it this time. As for the liveaction.. it strangely hits a spots Italians have for.. ew.. edgy Netflix series. I'm not surprised they were okay with this as in Italy the whitewash discussion is rarely approached. He basically described our society in that interview and it's really, really sad from my pov. x.x
@@mimmikibilly Yeah, the Italian fandom kinda forgot Winx Club even existed after Sirenix (which was the season people started disliking the direction), barely anyone remembers Bloomis, Mythix, Butterflix and so on. Believix was the last one people enjoyed truly. Made exception of fans that saw the show's beginning and actually are quite fond of internet, average fans simply believe the show is deae and are unbothered about the whitewashing of Flora (and Aisha in Season 8). All of those concerns about their body shapes and all were almost non-existent for us.
Thank you for explaining this, because it rly puts what Iginio said in the beginning into the proper context. I've seen that quote floating around and it's always confused me. I think we all have to remember that a lot of these cartoons with more mature themes are either Netflix originals or have those themes be buried in subtext that most people just aren't gonna pick up on.
Come on, they cannot do that to the Trix! Like, they are just about as diverse as the Winx themselves. You have Stormy who is impulsive and emotional (similarly to her weather/electricity powers), and at times even a little kiddy, being probably the most endearing of the trio. Then there is Darcy, who is the smartest and most stoic out of the three (due to her familiarity with mind powers), and has an alluring and mysterious aura, yet still having her funny quirks and outbursts every once in a while. And then there is Icy who is the damn most badass of everyone, she's proud and ambitous and competitive and stubborn, being a fucking queen at all times with her cold as ice demeanor. Like, they are three fully done characters, you cannot condense them into one and expect it to work! Unless it's like a multiple personality thing, but I highly doubt it. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk, lmao
Be thankful the Trix dodged a bullet on this one, they'll be some of the few characters who won't be butchered by the show since they're not actually in it.
@@3rebella They're the 3 witches that have been the enemies pretty much from the start of the series and in most seasons. winx.fandom.com/wiki/Trix_(Group)
being a singaporean myself, hearing the argument that applebaum is a quarter singaporean just makes me laugh. singaporean is not a race, it's a nationality. it's just like saying "oh no, she's not asian, she's american."
On the topic of Musa's actress, being of Singaporean descent is still kind of an issue, because of how different ethnic gropus of the same broader region are seen as interchangeable, See white latinxs playing indigenous native latinx folk or afrolatinx folk, or in this case, the interchangeability of South East Asians and East Asians.
I feel like the problem with FATE is that they are trying so hard to appeal to older audiences. But they don’t understand that edgy is not as “cool” as businesses think it is. Even older audiences prefer the animated one. No matter how old I am I would prefer the colorful, futuristic winx over this... winx with a riverdale filter. Also they changed so many aspects of the show. It’s not even winx anymore. Apparently, Aisha is no longer a princess and Faragonda is an alcoholic who doesn’t care about her students. I don’t want a live action. The cartoon is good enough for me. I want the old winx back!! Also. I bet the show will be canceled after the first one or two season cause of low ratings.
They really want a dark problematic series with the pandemic as if that isn’t enough darkness to give. I want hope not death and immature teens ganging up one cat. I want REAL FRIENDSHIP THAT SUPPORT EACH OTHER WITH TRUE LAUGHTER AND CRACKHEAD SITUATIONS not fake friendships laughing awkwardly. I want FASHION not blobs. Like excuse me, Winx is a FASHIONISTA LOVING SHOW not a hangover runway.
Agreed. I still enjoy the older seasons of the cartoon at 21, as I do with many "children's" shows and movies but with the newer seasons and the live action, the shows are so clearly made for either young children or young teens (like 13 to 16 probably) I just can't enjoy them. It is definitely possible to make content enjoyable by most age groups, Pixar does it all the time and Avatar is proof that a) you can have deep topics but still have the show be appropriate for younger audiences and b) you don't need a dark colour scheme and live action for a show to be mature. Netflix could have taken a fresh, new approach to this series but instead they chose the lazy way by basically combining Sabrina & Riverdale and using Winx related names. They probably were like "Riverdale and Sabrina are kinda popular, so let's make another one of that, older fans will still watch it anyway bc nostalgia"
Am I the only one who thinks theres nothing wrong with having "barbie dolls" as protagonist in this show?? I'm far from skinny, like I am short and chubby and I never really had a problem with seeing those skinny characters in this show. I understand they want to show more body representation. But seeing pretty slim girls doing magic and having nice fashion, is something that made Winx so fun and dreamy (to me).
I completely agree! I am also short and chubby and I have been through some issues with my body for some years now but every time I watched Winx the thought about skinny girls with extraordinary magical powers has never bothered me at all. When I was a kid I used to admire all the fashion and confidence the Winx had and that at some point helped me growing up to gain my own confidence and to dress the way I feel good. I have never thought about why there are girls with only one size, I was just amazed by their characters and their amazing taste
Exactly, even as a kid I knew the difference between cartoons and real life... I never felt insecure about my self watching them while growing up it never even crossed my mind... And as someone who grew up watching them, I definitely don't have any insecurities even know
What does MCbling mean? I don't recognize that term. And right??? Late '90s, early 2000s had great fashion that's made a comeback, and the only one in a decent outfit is Stella but it doesn't even fit her character. If I didn't know any better, I'd think it's a spinoff of Riverdale or Sabrina, but with even less designing money.
it is the weirdest thing to me right now because the y2k/“egirl”/fairycore fashion aesthetic is VERY in right now with teens and young adults, the main audience for the new show... even if the writing was subpar if they at least nailed the aesthetic somewhat i can see the shoe being successful. but of course they butchered absolutely everything that makes young adults enjoy the classic winx.
Okay, but no one was stopping them from casting a plus-sized Latina😐, and I kinda see why they got rid of Tecna (just so they could fit the power of 5 thing in shows) but it's doesn't feel the same if she's not in there 😭🥺
i've seen a lot of fan art the makes flora plus sided and it always bothered me. none of the other members, just flora. like, because she's latina, she has to be big. here's the thing tho, if they were going with the power of five thing, they should have kept techna, an og winx, and gotten rid of aisha. but the only reason she's there is because they scuttled the other two so they had to have someone of diversity and she's black so she gets the spot.
i honestly think that the darker version could have worked if they didn’t completely remove all of the fun and flavour from the original, like i would’ve been happy with a good middle ground but instead it got riverdaled.
Ikr. The reason I hate s8 is that they made it soooo childish that there was no feel to it. Yes s5-6 were childish but sometimes that darkness was still there. And that is why I love s5-6 and world of winx (not the whitewashing in weld of winx doe)
As a person who loved Winx club for years and was actually bullied because of it (I'm male), this makes me sad and outraged. This show was my escape from reality. Showing me that life can be beautiful even during hardships. That a girl can be strong, but feminine at the same time. And you are telling me that all of that is gonna be taken away... I can't! I just simply can't. Edit: Thank you all for the support!! You are all kings!!
Why they couldn't just make Flora a Plus-sized latina woman, is beyond me. It's not exactly an uncommon sight, and they are beautiful. Most latinas in media are portrayed as skinny, or built like supermodels, which isn't inherently unrealistic, but not a broad enough scope. Rainbow had a good idea by giving one of the Winx a different body type for further representation, but sealed their doom by eliminating a different representation in the process.
Well, considering how they always sexualize Latinas, I gotta say I am a little relieved... I wish I could have representation since I am Latino and all, but if they casted a latina actress and made her character the typical spicy Latina like they like to do it'd me much worse
girl. the winx members would be skinny anyways. they fly, fight enemies, walk around.. they're super active. they could've at least made her thick but latina. I feel like they wanna fat wash everything now..
Musa being whitewashed hurts since she is my Asian idol and why did they have to change her powers to "mind" when it could have been sound...like we have a fairy of light so fairy of sound could be a thing but nooooo Also I miss Tecna, she is one of my favourites. If they wanted to cast a plus sized actor who is white...could have cast Stella, Bloom, or Tecna as plus sized. Actually Stella being plus sized and fashionable would have been even more of a strong message of body positivity. But noooo they went for using it to excuse whitewashing Flora.
Giovanni Rafael In my opinion this is the only show where it wouldn’t make sense for any of them to be fat (and as a person who was fat my whole life until quarantine started, i hated when people said “plus sized”, don’t sugar coat it), because not only do the Winx run/fly around all day and fight and dance and do sports, they aren’t even humans, they’re magical fairies. Plus, I’d imagine they’d eat pretty healthy, especially Flora, so it wouldn’t make any sense to make her that large. Making some of them curvy or something is believable, but I don’t see how it would make sense for any of them to be obese like they made Flora.
Musa was and still is my favorite character in Winx Club and the fact that she was the Asian coded one helped me relate to her even more. Whitewashing her is like a slap in the face.
I felt the same with Flora :( I’m so disappointed on this live action. Will definitely not be watching. I’m honestly more surprised about Musa though not being casted properly, specially when her style and culture in the show is inspired entirely on asian cultures.
As someone who is asian, with friends of multiple races who basically all grew up with Winx, the whitewashing absolutely turned us away from bothering to even click on one episode. We want representation, we want someone like us to be seen on screen.
For real, when I was younger, me and my friends roleplayed as the Winx - my redhead friend was Bloom, I played Musa, and her best friend who's black played Aisha. And now they just... hm.
At least you can still feel representation in some way - not in Fate though. As a white person you can rarely even feel represented as all white people are either depicted as evil (due to them being white and white being evil in general), just plain boring or forgettable. It's actually all the non-white people who get the interesting story and plot and in a world where white people are seen as less valuable than others, there is nothing nice white people can get. This leads to blackwashing (basically the opposite of whitewashing) but blackwashing being justified because black = good, white = bad.
@@Enchantix00Sasori Because white people have had SO many moving stories, memorable and powerful characters, and they have always been the main stars of the show. Now, the media realise that black people need the same thing. White people haven't lost their representation, far from it, they're still the most represented people in media, just black people are now advancing more into the spotlight they deserve, that they've been deprived of for so long.
@@Enchantix00Sasori just to tell you: blackwashing is not the correct term at all as white washing stems from the racist ideal that a black character must have their skin "washed" in order to be "clean"
@@Vincent69. That is complete bullshit. Changing a character‘s culture and skin color just for the sake of it is wrong in any kind of way. To change a white character into a colored character to make them more „important“ is saying that white people are not important and that is both wrong to the viewers and also to the character itself.
him saying viewer audience is supposed to be up to eight but me a 15 year old still loving winx club ever since i was 6 years old *eye mouth eye emojis *
-weeps at the loss of Tecna- She was my favorite.....It isn't nearly as important as racial representation, but as a kid growing up in the early 2000's, the idea that computers and games and such were only for boys was very much a thing. The fact that I liked those things made me weird when compared to my peers but I had Tecna. I even ended up cutting my hair short when I got older in a style similar to hers. She is one of my favorite characters of all time and her absence makes the show feel even emptier than it is already.
techna has always been one of my favourites, along with musa, aisha/layla and bloom (coz i'm a sucker for a main character), but for different reasons to her interst in technology. her struggle with emotions and relationships is relatable to me, even if i didnt really realise when i was younger. as an intelligent girl who struggles with people, the constantly being told that its because i was ugly coz i spent more time doing homework and school work instead of focusing on my looks and that if i worked on my apperance i'd suddenly be popular and able to deal with all the relationships life through at me and find love was annoying, as i hated doing homework and avoided it the most i could, and i did put effort into my apperance (not hours, but i did take time to make sure the colours matched and the clothes and my hair didnt need neatening up and washing, and that the clothes actually suited me) so seeing techna, a good looking, intelligent young woman who struggled with relationships and expressing herself was amazing. its honestly a shame that so few characters, especially young women, like that are on tv, seeing how there are so many more young girls like i was watching tv and being told that the reason you struggle to talk to people and have a hard time making meaningful connections is coz you dont try and dont dress yourself well. yeah stuff like that is fun to watch, but they need to be balanced with more characters like techna.
Tecna was my favorite too! I loved that she was socially awkward and nerdy (like me) but still had an arc and personality beyond just being "the smart one." she even got imo one of the most epic moments in the whole show (sacrificing herself in the third season). plus her more masculine/edgy aesthetic was very cool to me.
Same girl. I've always been more logical leaning and see techna as the best winx member. She inspires me. She literally sacrafied herself for a landmass she wasn't associated with personallt. Literally the bravest baddest winx fairy.
My question for reboots of shows are why don’t they ask people from the fandom?! Like if you brought in 10-20 people, have them take a look at the character designs/actors, sets/places for the series you would easily avoid these issues. Like it would take 1 person saying “hey, why isn’t Tecna in the series and why have the characters been whitewashed?” For them to realize changes should be made
I've always seen Tecna as autism representation, it's lost in the later seasons as they all lose part of their personalities, seeing her missing from the life action hurts my soul, seeing Tecna struggle with reading emotions and with expressing herself was something I related to a lot growing up
me too, I feel ridiculous not realising it until recently considering how important winx has always been in my life but wow it makes complete sense as to why my younger self found a connection with her character
But that's the thing, autistic people are either really good at reading emotions or terrible ex. My brother is on the spectrum and can tell when anybody is any emotion but one of his friends at school, not so much
@@shia6757 we do need more empath autistic representation, the robotic genius is a tired trope that needs to die, but the show did do it's best to separate her from that
Especially since Singapore is so multicultural. Does that mean she's quarter Chinese Singaporean? Or Malay? What does that even matter, she is white-passing therefore not the right actress for Musa. No hate on the actress though, she seems lovely.
@Serena Magnolia Like he said in the video, in past videos he downplayed the whitewashing of the girls. He basically said that it wasn't intentionally, so it was implied that it's not a big deal. But he realised his mistake now, which is good.
they could have done something like legends of tomorrow: bright, really chaotic, funny with a little drama and sadness, and really comforting at the same time. it would have been SO MUCH better. a bunch of fairies, who have their differences, but still manage to find a home in each other. staying loyal to the show and still changing some stuff isn't that hard.
@@joiceraiana exactly!! it was disgusting and high-key scary but also funny and keeping that same tone. also slay anything on season 5 is amazing, funny but also dark, because after all, we're talking about a kid who was bullied and became a serial killer. netflix had everything to do a legends-esque show and did...whatever fate the winx saga is.

I feel like the majority of the Winx fandom views the fandom as absolutely being the first 2-4 seasons, and elements of the rest are taken in. Like how Riven and Musa ended up, and Bloom/Sky and Aisha/Nabu's engagements. After that? It's pretty much tossed away.
as a latina, flora has always been my favorite, the few latina representations I have seen on tv has always been this sensual, provocative, spicy latina, but Flora was not that stereotype, she is sweet, caring, kind, and a little shy, but she stills stands out for her friends, it was so rare to see a delicate latina like me or my mother, I'm so sad I don't have that now in Fate
Apparently Terra is supposed to be a mix of Tecna and Flora, bc they decided that both characters don’t have enough developement in the first season (even though aisha wasn’t even in the first damn season).
According to leaked bios, Flora was supposed to be in the show. But Flora was going to be a Gossip Queen who loves to bully and humiliate Stella. And Aisha was originally going to replaced with a girl named Jade who flooded and destroyed her High School because she failed a Math Test.
@@curefestive1774 Flora. Sweet, sensitive Flora.... A Bully! 😆 Yeah, I can already imagine how *that* would go! Bully Flora: "Yo, Stella! You look really pretty today!" Musa: "What was THAT?! I keep hearing some fans telling me that it's not white-washing when Elisha Applebaum is part Singaporean, but as someone who's Vietnamese-American-, that's bullshit. NOT every fans or first time watchers are going to know that little info off the bat when they watch the show. All they see is a white actress playing an Asian characters, another visual telling that their culture isn't worth giving a chance in the Hollywood industry. If anything, perhaps Elisha Applebaum would have been better off playing Princess Galatea, a character that fans already theorized as multi-cultural! If they wanted to copy a live-action series but still stay true to their magical style, they should have chosen to take lessons from series like or (also on Netflix) instead of trying to be another Riverdall or whatever. H2O and its spin-off is live-action on teenage girls with magical powers...instead of fairies, you get mermaids...the shows are bright and colorful, the characters wear fashionable outfits, have magical adventures, and yes, even cast an actual Asian actress to play a Chinese mermaid! It's charming, it's fun, and it can also be serious when it has to be.
@@finland4ever55 even if she is she is most likely the wrong ethnicity when I heard that rumor I would’ve thought she is part Indian or sth, she does not look like someone with East Asian blood in them at all. And Singapore is a diverse country with a lot of ethnicities like Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, Eurasian etc. like seriously a white passing actor isn’t any better than a white actor playing a character who. is based on a Chinese actress and shown to be Chinese through her clothing and the structural buildings of her home planet
With the squeaky voice difference I never picked up on that change as a kid. I never figured the afro could have been a problem since she still looked pretty.
im pretty sure musa's actress being from Singapore is a lie, apparently as soon as she got the role her being from there was wiped from her imdb and socials
Also being a quarter anything isn't much representation. I'm half british half French and while I can pass as a British person, I've grown up in France and feel so French that I get uncomfortable being called British even with half of my family being from there and living in the UK for half of my schooling. If I was a quarter British it would be more of an anecdote than anything.
I'm so disappointed with the fact that they removed so many things and so many characters. I was on board with the live action but now I'm not at all. This had a potential to be something amazing if they just followed the story as it was. I'm so disappointed.
That would have been worse; personally, I dislike the specialists as really they tend not to contribute much other then getting shunted off by the Trix whenever they try assist the Winx in an actual fight. If they wanted to do a good spin-off do one for the Trix
@@JediLordNathan That’s what I meant , a spin off that focus on their adventures. As a guy I’ve always been interested in learning more about red fountain or seeing episodes focused around the specialists

They want more strong female characters but then they scrap one? Smart.
Why? They're fairies, they have to be able to fly, being fat it's impossible to a competent fairy, and anyway, why people wants so much to normalize harming our bodies? Being fat it's not like having a tattoo, it's an illness, and it's hard to cure it, people should normalize being healthy 😑😑😑

I think their idea was we want live action winx to be “older, darker and edgier” which basically these days equals to swearing and sex. They just wanted license to do that because they think that’s all we care about. All the other things, the storylines, character development, diversity doesn’t matter. It’s such a shame.
I swear if they mess up the world building, I'm going to lose it. Winx has always had a very diverse world, and now it seems like their replacing it with typical GOT's aesthetic
Y2k fashion is back and the most y2k show in terms of fashion, is dressing their characters like wine moms. I want knee boots with sparkles and flowy shirts and 2000 looking prints.
To be honest the thinness of the girls never really bother me. I always felt TOO skinny as a kid! My family members were always saying that I needed to gain more weight actually so seeing skinny yet fashionable girls was nice to me. But of course, as a black woman, I understand the need for more representation as well, don't get me wrong lol. I wish Flora was a plus-sized Latina actress and that Musa was Asian also!
@@Snow-xd4rv tbh I just wish they wouldn’t add plus sized women to a show like this, where you already had a diverse cast and this is a live action of an already made show. the adding one plus sized woman just comes off as tokenism to me tbh. "we removed one character and turned a poc woman white. might as well make her a plus size so we cant get bashed for it!" this isnt me bashing plus size representation or saying that they should all be skinny, im saying that they should at least come off as similar to the actual characters. not only is the race completely off but everything else like her fashion and hairstyle is so off that you dont even realise its supposed to be flora until you hear about it.

And with that we have Tecna magic working with miscticism of the Fate, and similiar to her magic in og series. This thunder magic could be even source of storyline for Tecna in fate. She could be magic-disabled and use only her magic with technology or just prefer to use it that way, which would piss of some more conservative teachers in Alfea. Sorry for my English. Have a nice day!
I think you bring up some fair points though I do want to mention one thing about Flora. Winx was made in Italy and generally popular all throughout Europe, it was never originally intended for an American audience, personally growing up I never saw Flora as 'latina coded' mainly because we don't have latina's in Europe, we have Spanish people, we have people from Eastern European countries like Romania and in my country specifically a lot of people from Turkey and Morocco. Even if Flora's design was originally inspired by J-lo that doesn't mean she was meant to be of American Hispanic background, that just doesn't make sense for a European production. So I always figured Flora was a tanned character meant to represent any girl that is mixed or naturally tan, I doubt she was specifically intended to be 'latina', just wanted to mention that, she should however not have been whitewashed but I'm also not a fan of Americanization.
I take offense to the suggestion that Latina characters are apparently "Americanized" and not people that exist all over the world, and that her being directly inspired by a Latina woman isn't good enough to prove that she was meant to be Latina. "that just doesn't make sense for a European production" is a bullshit argument, and you know it. Not only that, but Winx was largely inspired by elements from all cultures, including things catering to """"American""""" audiences. The fact all of the Winx were inspired by celebrities popular in the American world should tell you as much lol. I also find your contribution to what you interpreted her as particularly irrelevant if you're not POC.
@@eclipsa8467 How does that not make sense to you? How often do you see American cartoons and shows including for example Turkish people, people from the Balkans, Indonesians, Ethiopians.. The list goes on. Fact is we have far more people from these groups in Europe than you guys do in America so you guys don't make content including people with this background. American celebrities with a latino background are usually not seen as 'latino' by many people here, you're an American first to us.. J-lo would be considered American first because she was born in New York, if you google her she's literally described as an 'American actress'. My point is that views on nationality are different in many European countries in contrast to the US. From what I've noticed color/nationality of cartoon characters is not something that is widely discussed here nor does it have much importance in general.
@@eev14 I'm not American btw, I'm literally Portuguese. Just thought you should know. Second of all, that means jackshit. Winx Club is set in Magix, a world outside of the realm of Italy lmfao. That means it's free to have influences from all over the world. Do you guys also have Asians or Black people in Italy or are you gonna start going off on me on how that's "Americanization" as well? And that's just....not how it works. Latino is NOT a nationality, it's an ethnicity. Someone like Jennifer Lopez is definitely seen as non-white and therefore is subject to the treatment people of Latino descent are subjected to. Jennifer Lopez is an American singer, yes, the same way Beyonce is an American singer....but Beyonce is still Black lol. And just because it's not widely discussed there or of importance doesn't mean it's not important, period. Just because YOU didn't realize she was Latina-coded, doesn't mean she's not.
Hey hey, as a Singaporean Chinese human, I hope to make something clear: "Singaporean" isn't an ethnicity. It's a nationality, at least for now. The country is only 56 years independent as of 2021, and we do not have any established race that is strictly considered "Singaporean" yet. We're a mishmash of races with Chinese majority, and with our other major ethnic groups being Malay, South Asian (mostly Indian and Bangladeshi), and Indonesian. No one here considers "Singaporean" our race or ethnicity because it's only our country of birth and/or residence, unless we need to distinguish between countries of origin for those racial groups (e.g. Singaporean-Chinese, Malaysian-Chinese, Mainland-Chinese). Basically, to say Musa's actress being "part-Singaporean" is enough to level her playing of an East Asian character (Singapore is ultimately SouthEast Asian anyways lmao) would be VERY SIMILAR to saying a white actress is allowed to play a Native American's role because said white actress was born and raised in America and has "some" ambiguous POC ancestry. Yes, Elisha Applebum being "one-quarter Singaporean" could mean she has Asian blood, as Singapore, again, is occupied by mostly Asian races, particularly those from SouthEast Asia and China, but it isn't very solid grounds for playing a character that was VERY OBVIOUSLY VISUALLY EAST ASIAN, specifically Chinese. Applebum also doesn't look at all Asian, and when people watch live actions not everyone is going to look up an actor's ethnicity, so they will just end up "being white" to the unknowing audience members. So yeah, bad choice for casting if they wanted any form of actual racial diversity in there.
I'm Hispanic and growing up I've always had difficulty finding a character I can Identify with especially with the Disney princesses, but Flora was that character for me. She always was and still is my favorite character and I loved seeing her grow throughout all the seasons. When I saw they had replaced her in the live action I lost all hope for it and I still don't even wanna give it the time of day
sometimes i wish the list was the other way round and the one in the middle was really minor. coz political stuff is tiring and puts a damper on everything.
I am tired of people harping about representation. When I was a child, I didn’t even think that any of those characters are Indians or something. I assumed all of them were English with few having a tan. I just enjoyed the show and was obsessed day and night with the show cause I loved the fairies. The fact that the new Fate series lacks the fun and charm my childhood series had is enough to put me off. But no, the most terrible thing about the new show is whitewashing.

Exactly what I was thinking. I see how they can get away with flora, as much at it hurts. But come on Musa was obviously inspired by asian culture.
She was inspired by lucy liu so definitely asian
Musa was also based off of Lucy Liu so yeah she is definitely Asian
@@trucelovers yep
Hence being coded
I feel like the concept would fit so, *so* much better if they made the live-action series a Trix spin-off. The dark feel & aesthetic would fit it so much better.
I think the biggest issue is the whitewashing of Flora and Musa
They cut out important characters to me
The trix are one person , the fairies don't have wings , no Ms Faragonda at the school , the stuff with blooms parents was pretty dark in season one
It's a mess
@@joshroberts1936 I know. A Trix spin-off would have none of these problems. The Trix are all canonically white. They wouldn’t even have to worry about including the Cloud Tower principal, as the Trix were expelled in season 1.

I never realized that before, man this story was a lot deeper than I remembered
Yea, I love Tecna but it’s sad that people don’t like her because she don’t have long hair and she’s different...
yes thank you!! i could always see myself in tecna *because* she was autistic-coded and there wasn't a lot of rep (let alone positive rep) in other shows i watched. it makes me really sad to see they got rid of her.
Ok but remember all autistic people aren't like this. A lot of autistic people understand their feelings just like anybody else does

Rainbow specified that Netflix had no hand in making Fate. Rainbow wanted this mess.
Anime and cartoons are not the same but you're right
Not only anime but there are a lot of cartoons too that have vibrant colors that both adults and children enjoy like Adventure time and Steven Universe just to name two.

They tried bullying Netflix into canning Cuties. They can do it again.
He basically described our society in that interview and it's really, really sad from my pov. x.x
Yes, thank you for your insight and a different perspective.
For those who understand Italian, Iris Babilonia covered this debacle on her channel. She's the only one I saw though.
Thank you for explaining.

Wtf they gave mirta's powers to Musa
You know what? Put Stella as plus size? Why can't a fashion queen be also plus size?
Or they could’ve just taken the original Flora and made her more chubby without white washing her. Doesn’t seem impossible to me🤷♀️🤦♀️
Giovanni Rafael
In my opinion this is the only show where it wouldn’t make sense for any of them to be fat (and as a person who was fat my whole life until quarantine started, i hated when people said “plus sized”, don’t sugar coat it), because not only do the Winx run/fly around all day and fight and dance and do sports, they aren’t even humans, they’re magical fairies.
Right completely unacceptable
@@Enchantix00Sasori
just to tell you: blackwashing is not the correct term at all as white washing stems from the racist ideal that a black character must have their skin "washed" in order to be "clean"
@@Vincent69. That is complete bullshit. Changing a character‘s culture and skin color just for the sake of it is wrong in any kind of way. To change a white character into a colored character to make them more „important“ is saying that white people are not important and that is both wrong to the viewers and also to the character itself.

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Like it would take 1 person saying “hey, why isn’t Tecna in the series and why have the characters been whitewashed?” For them to realize changes should be made
It's cuz of money. They just rush to do this so they can make some mulla off of it. You're using pure common sense but it prob won't happen 😔
So true. I'm not autistic, nor on the spectrum, but I was so mad they did this to Tecna :(
But that's the thing, autistic people are either really good at reading emotions or terrible ex. My brother is on the spectrum and can tell when anybody is any emotion but one of his friends at school, not so much

Flora was based on Jennifer Lopez, who is a Latina celeb in the US (specifically Puerto Rican). If it’s not coding, then it’s canon.
I look forward to the Chilling Adventures Of River Wynx Dale personally. then again I like soapopera teen drama shows.
Its trash bruh they fr took out every good thing about winx
When I saw they had replaced her in the live action I lost all hope for it and I still don't even wanna give it the time of day
I freaking hate this. They did the same thing with teen titans. Needlessly dark and edgy live action series. It's no fun.
Firs thing anyone will be talking about: representation.
Second: cultural appropriation.
Third: mature story like riverdale.
um... what? what cultural appropriation?
sometimes i wish the list was the other way round and the one in the middle was really minor. coz political stuff is tiring and puts a damper on everything.
@@whitemoonwolf13 My thoughts exactly
I am tired of people harping about representation. When I was a child, I didn’t even think that any of those characters are Indians or something. I assumed all of them were English with few having a tan. I just enjoyed the show and was obsessed day and night with the show cause I loved the fairies. The fact that the new Fate series lacks the fun and charm my childhood series had is enough to put me off. But no, the most terrible thing about the new show is whitewashing.
@@RKNancy we live in a world where representation sells. Without it your product is dead in the water.
The only time when it's ok is when the entire cast is either asia or black or not European or american. Then representation doesnt matter as much.
The most only thing that I think worked fate was Musa and Riven’s relationship in the second season.
(fun fact: FATE means FAIRIES in italian-)
When will the lesson be learned? *WHEN WILL THE LESSON BE LEARNED????* Every damn time someone try's to Reboot anything animated, it will always end in disaster!
She-Ra’s reboot was one of the only ones which were a success
