  • Since touring our new home I’ve wanted to strip all the paint off the beams in each room. We knew they had so much potential but WOW this DIY project was not easy but it definitely paid off! I LOVE the warmth, richness, and organic look the beams bring to this space and I can’t wait to decorate!

    I'm in agreement with Romeo regarding leaving the arches as is. I think they look more elegant without the additional trim piece you found. What about painting the trim & baseboards the same colour as your walls but in a semi-gloss for a subtle visual interest?? Beautiful work as usual and I can't wait to see the end result!

      I agree. Romeo doesn't seem to have too much say in the design (I know he trusts Macenna, my husband is the same!) so if this is something he is being vocal about, I think they should compromise.

      I don’t think the arches need the corbels, or if you did put them I think it would be cool to have a small light coming out of it. Like a tea light candle size, recessed in the top.

    I am voting for no decorative piece on the arch. I love how decorative it is but also simple as it is. Especially next to the fireplace which is a huge statement piece. You might end up feeling like it competes with the fireplace. But whatever you do or how you do it, it will obviously be Ah-Mazing! ❤️❤️❤️

      Gosh I know you’re finished with your beautiful arches, but if it ever feels like it’s not quite right to you ( or for your next arch you do, if you have more) you might consider doing your way of layering materials but this time with flexi molding. You might even skip the store side moldings and use that same 1/8 board you used on the top arch and run that down each side and use the fleximolding ( or the same molding you used on your curves) to make the side ridges and then they can just naturally curve into and follow the arch. At least one of the ridges...
      I don’t know if I’m making any sense in how I’m describing it. I wish I could insert a little sketch, ha. And then you can repeat that interior curved detail above that...
      I’ve also pictured in my mind just a small modified “collar” that’s almost just like a small horizontal rectangle that goes from front to inside the door to the back side, that only protrudes about an inch. But I do think any collar might do better with an arch casing designed and made with flexible molding. I think that’s one of the barriers that’s happening. Going from the straight to the curve... and having the elements flow... it sort of kicks the collar forward or something...
      those beans are beautiful! man if it were me I never would’ve gotten them done in four days!

    You know what, I love the simplicity of how the arches are right now. Sometimes less is more. They are so close to the mantle also, which is already such a architectural element in this space. To me personally everything in this room is already so spendidly balanced, as is. Anywho.. you do what feels right to you (and Romeo, a bit, hahaha). Much love and admiration from a Dutch fan! Xx

    The beams look amazing! For the arches, maybe leave them as-is for now and if they still feel empty in a few months, come back to it? I agree with you that it feels like it's missing something, but the more options you try, the more I wonder if leaving them without the trim piece is the best one. And if you still think it could be better in a few months, you can always come back to it!

    A tip for using gel stain (probably too late now, but maybe would help in a future project) is to wear latex gloves (2 pair is best) and on one hand, wear a cotton, athletic, tube sock. So basically you dip the socked hand in the gel stain and rub it on your wood. You have more control that way compared to using a rag.

    To be honest, I love the simple design of this California home. I think the diagonal arches matched the diagonal of the ceiling in that room. That being said, you obviously prefer the arches but i feel there is already enough trim and the extra corbels do not go with the simple style. Darkening the beams is spot on and looks great, especially in a time where everyone paints everything white. Nice work!

  • @luperodela9668
    @luperodela9668 11 месяцев назад +13

    The beams look amazing! I’m soo glad you went dark to match the o others. I’m with Romeo, NO deco piece inside door way! Let the trim you added as well as the arch shine! I’m soo impressed you tackled the stripping.

  • @nfa6386
    @nfa6386 11 месяцев назад +178

    I’ve said it before but to help the stripper penetrate the paint you need to rough sand and lightly gouge (wire brush) the paint before applying the stripper and then cover with plastic wrap, it will help it be way way more effective trust me! I worked as a paint sprayer for many years and was one of the first tips I learned and saved me a lot of time and effort.

    I think I prefer the arches without the extra details!! I like the simplicity and softness they have, and with them being color-drenched they look very natural to the space as they are now. I worry that the corbles would break up the natural and soft lines the new arches have, and would make the simplicity a little busy and not as natural to the eye. Maybe hold off for now, decorate the space, live in it for a bit, and then see if you want to add them as an extra detail! The room is looking AMAZING and I can't wait to see how you bring it together!

    I love the paint color on the fireplace with the brass. And I'm with Romeo on leaving the arches.

    They look absolutely gorgeous!! Getting them back to a natural tone, was exactly what this room needed and they make such a statement when you walk through the front door! ❤

    It’s funny how we all have our “things” that bother us and things that don’t. You stress over things that to me are completely unnoticeable. But, your cut lines, which are totally noticeable don’t bother you. I’m a “cutline girl” and I can’t imagine spending days stripping the paint from the beams, which I would totally do, then freehanding the cut lines. It’s all I would see when I walked in your door. The jagged is all I see. I guess that is why there are 31 flavors of ice cream. I personally think the arches are perfect. I don’t much care for the side corbel thing you are trying to do. It’s too much. It’s like you are trying too hard. The paint colors are gorgeous. So far, everything is turning out so beautiful. Great job! Oh and I absolutely love the new chairs you got. This room is turning out so lovely!

    It all looks beautiful but agree with Romeo too about the collars!

    I think what is off about the door openings is the 45 degree corners of the top trim. It looks like a tall skinny door that was filled in. If the trim on top was formed like the arch curve, instead of the 45, it would blend with the eye and be more cohesive. You could even add a decorative element on the curve. I agree with Romeo about the collar.

    Hello.I love all the work and decor you do, but I agree with Romeo about the arch.Sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.What it comes down to is if you and Romeo like it you live there.What ever you decide it is still a beautiful home.God bless yall

    All of your and Romeo's hard work looks really good. Can you please seriously consider Romeo's suggestion about not putting the collar on the arches? They are taking away from the clean lines and flow of that space. Sometimes, we get too obsessed with what we want and it just doesn't fit/sit...this is one of those times, I feel. If you do want something around the arches for that visual interest, maybe you could consider some narrow sconces and have battery operated bulbs in them or some narrow yet short art or decors on the walls besides the arches. But for now, pls just leave the arches as they are. They look so good with the dark beams. All the best. XX

    Love the fireplace great choice for colour. I think it makes the antique brass better against the white it looked more gold.

    If there are 99 projects, Macenna is working on them. If there is one project, Macenna is working on it. If there are no projects, Macenna is dead. This girl never quits y’all 😂❤🔨
