Lovely vases! I have been doing mosaics for about 20 years, here is just a tip or two: If you want the air dry clay in a specific colour you can dye it before rolling out with acrylic paint ( kneed it into the clay). After pressing the china pieces into the clay smooth the clay with wet fingers around them. That makes it more even. greetings from UK!

Yes! I agree, I missed those. I do enjoy the house projects but I also enjoy when stuff like this is still thrown in.
You can spray them with a coat of shellac and then they can be used outside. I have used shellac on a lot of acrylic paint projects and it makes projects water proof!

I agree! And while I love all her vids, most are simply entertainment since they got the cottage. I can’t afford the furniture, materials, appliances or homes. But these kind of DIYs - those I can do!
MaCenna, lovely project. I am a mosaic artist and teacher and I have not used air dry clay for doing mosaic on a vase but it seems to have worked well for your "pique assiette" (broken dishes/crockery) vases. If you are thinking about making a mosaic table top, especially one that will be outside, please consider attaching your broken dishes and ceramic tiles (a nice complement or edging) to the table top with either E6000 glue or with thin set tile adhesive and then after drying at least 24 hours, grounting around them with grout, which comes in many colors and you can buy it in a powder form, so if you wish to mix two colors, that will be easy to do. Oh, also, please wear safety glasses or goggles when you hammer directly onto the china, it is easy for a tiny shard to fly into the air and into your eye. You can also put the dish pieces in a gallon plastic bag, so you can see them while you hammer and then there is no way for the shards to go anywhere. Let me know if you have any questions.

I’m actually planning to make outdoor tables with my old pink bathroom tile and this is very helpful!
We did this as kids to make candle holders. With glass globs or stain glass pieces my mom had left over.
You could also use a glass cutter to cut the pieces to show the pattern and get the shapes the size you want them if some of the designs are special
The method we have always used is gluing Mosaic pieces on the base and then grouting...just like tiling in the bath...end result waterproof...have several on my patio which get rained on frequently. Have fun trying a different method.

Listening to you talk about thinking outside the box with how to use items inspires me, and reminds me of my late grandmother who was the crafting queen in my family. She could do SO MANY crafty things, and your spirit reminds me of her. ❤
I also once saw a sink in an old house in France that was completely made with/ covered with old pieces of china
The music is always so nice, but I absolutely love when you suddenly remove it and leave us hearing the natural background sounds on videos like this! The wind blowing, the leaves rustling ❤ even back before the cottage was dried in and there was plastic hanging in the doorway, the wind blowing through the house was so serene. Loved this diy and definitely will be trying it!

Love when beautiful but broken China is repurposed and given a new life. I cringe when perfectly good pieces are broken to make something however. I think of all of the lovely table settings that piece could have been used for.
Cracked/broken china stepping stones would be a stunning addition to your garden!
Because the clay dries quickly, I would use gloves to apply pieces and damp n my gloves to smith it out and keep the clay mailable. Use China for trays, coasters, table tops, trivets, frames, endless possibilities!
Thank you so much for showing me this idea. I have china that was handed down to me from my great grandmother that over the years has chipped. I never knew what to do with it. Did want to hand it down to my daughters because it didn't look good. but now I could give each one a vase using that china set. You have no idea how happy I am. Thank you Thank you
Would gluing pieces to the glass and then use grout. Grout comes is lots of colors so you could get the colors you want.
Saucer without teacups I use underneath my potted plants.
Well, the timing on this is perfect! I was cleaning out my china cabinet … my cat jumped up to see what I was doing, lost her footing on two of my pretty vintage plates…and they crashed to the floor…vases it is 😂
I did mosaic tile in cement bird baths. Where water is placed. It is so beautiful.
when u asked what else you could make from the china, my mind went straight to a wind chime! a wind chime from the broken plates would be sooooo cute and tie back into the vases. would add another audible element outdoors!! loveeee

My grandma used broken China pieces and cement to make round stepping stones in her garden and a round bistro table top. Both were beautiful.
Also, if you break the China pieces before doing the clay part, then they’re ready and you have more time before the clay dries.

You could do a serving tray, metal or wood ( to start ) by using or building the size you wanted. Making sure that you have a lip around the tray of about an inch or inch & a half. I would do it in this order. #1, Find or make a tray that you will LOVE!!! #2, Glue ceramic pieces onto tray in the pattern that you desire. #3, Pour a clear Epoxy over the entire tray of ceramic pieces. There are SO many different ways to use ceramic plates & or broken flower pots. The list of reused or reimagined items that you could use for a table top or many other items is endless. My father made a coffee table from old barn timbers that were going to be junked. He placed beautifully colored fly fishing lures in a few places on the table top before doing a clear coat of epoxy. I've had that table for years & still get compliments on it. People are Amazed when they find one of the lures & that my father made the hole thing! I LOVE your outlook on Life!🌹🥀🌻🌼🌷🪴
Would be cool to do this in cement & make stepping stones for the garden. Could maybe even arrange the pieces into shapes or letters.
I love how joyful you are. Another great idea to repurpose broken china is using them as mulch to top dress a garden pot or small area of a garden bed.
I got a bunch of different colors of plates and covered a little table, a cabinet outside on my patio. Also covered my fire pit that the tile had broken. I used mortar and sealed it. It does have areas that stick up. I took a Dremel tool and smoothed the sides down especially around the fire pit so no one would get cut! I love your idea!
Saucers can be used as little trinket trays. I wouldn’t say they’re only useful with tea cups..

I think you can sand the clay smooth after it’s dried if you don’t like the bumps.

MaCenna, what came to mind for me was that it would make an awesome utensil holder. I have a utensil holder on my counter, utensils that I use daily, and I hardly ever have to open my drawers.
That second vase is especially beautiful! This diy is a fun idea for a date night 💖
The only tip I have for any future projects if this type you do, is maybe place the ceramic pieces into the clay before you wrap the vase. Roll the clay out, press in the ceramic and then roll over it again to smooth the clay. Then drape it around the vase and chop off the excess. That’s the way I’ve done it (back when terrazzo was big).

My mom and my preschool grandsons and I decorated craft store birdhouses together, when we traveled to my daughters house from different states, to babysit them for a week.
My daughter loved them so much, she still uses them as decoration in her kitchen. And the little boys who thought they couldn’t make them nice enough, were so proud of their art projects. They’re now both college graduates. My mother passed, 14 years ago. Time flies and the memories we made remain.

If you wanted to very precisely cut out the designs in the china, you can use tile nippers. They are also good for softening edges and creating curves.

I have seen this mosaic on table tops and inside trays! With a smooth resin too for use! Beautiful
I love your vases! You surprised me with your approach with the clay. I mosaicd a lot, but I always use grout to finish my projects. I glue the china pieces on things and then grout.
You can do wooden trays, wooden birdhouses, plant pots, around a mirror. You can also use the ears, lids and spouts of the coffeecups and teapots, and little mirror pieces inbetween.
And the last tip: you can colour your grout before applying by mixing acrylic paint in it.

Love this ide!! But I also use teacup saucers as planter pot saucers when I find them without the teacups 🤷♀️. I sometimes even reuse vintage thrifted pitchers or coffee mugs with saucers as planter pots for small indoor starter plants too, drill a hole at the bottom with a masonry bit.
*Vases are so pretty; especially with the gorgeous blue agapanthus and white roses from your yard❣️💟💙💕*
You can also use this method to make a picture frame or a mirror frame. A slight variation on your method that you might like is to push the pieces into the clay a little deeper and smooth the clay over the edges of the china pieces, so the china looks like it’s underneath the clay, peeking out, as opposed to being on top of the clay. Both of the ones you did are pretty, but I especially love that blue one!

Love this idea. You could even make coasters, trays or even tiles with broken china. I like the idea of pouring resin overtop for a smooth surface.
Love these! Great way to repurpose! Couple of tips for airdry clay: you can color your clay prior (I prefer using chalk pastels), you can use a damp sponge to help smooth the clay and keep it workable, you can lightly sand your clay once dry, and you can waterproof with a sealer.
Your vases are so charming! I have a huge bowl of old china pieces waiting to be used…now I’m inspired. There is a movie called One True Thing…Merle Streeps character is working on a large table top made just like this. (That’s when my bowl started!) Trays are another way to go. Old china patterns speak to my heart. Thank you for giving them new life ❤🌸

I would make the two steps in your "lawn" towards the backyard door that you cut out with this technique, of course with water proof material, some cement or so. Great project and beautiful outcome!
So unique in it's way, I love to see a mosaic lamp just as the vases. I've been watching your vids for year's, I've knowest you manage your time and not rush to get the projects done, your a professionist and I like that because I'm the same way. Someone told me about a thrift store that carries items from Target, Amazon and Fairway. These items are new and affordable, the store is called "That's Cheap".
A bird bath for your garden would be a cool mosaic project
What about using a glaze to tint the clay afterwards where you can just wipe it off the tiles.

This an ancient French art called piquet-assirtte, which means " brolen plate.". I have been making things from all of my broken china. My best piese is an antique dough table, covered in china. Glad you discovered the art, McCenna! ❤

@XO MaCenna try making vintage moulds with the air dry clay I’ve aged a few thrifted things like that used some antique glaze to age it more
Love this diy..You could break mirrors and add those too..I did a mosaic side table for my patio..I used sea glass and the glass marbles from dollar tree came out beautiful..
Art teacher tip, if you have trouble with the clay drying too quickly you can keep areas you aren’t working on covered with plastic wrap to slow down the drying.
Doing these little projects must remind you how far you have come… and you are taking the deeper lessons that come with that which is wonderful to see ❤

@@YayaBolender I have watched Elise for years and I see a slight resemblance in style, but MaCenna has evolved and grown her channel so much in such a short amount of time, full credit to her. Both do an amazing job with each of their channels. I find them uniquely different from others. I don’t know why Elise doesn’t have a bigger audience?
@@LisaAdams.75 I was not talking about what Macenna puts inside her videos, I was talking about the way she was doing her voice over by taking a slightly sad and romantic tone and by using kind of nostalgic musics. I have followed Macenna for years and suddenly she is becoming someone else? I remember a time when I had to lower the sound on my iPhone because she was screaming so much. I was just watching some Elise’s videos just before this one and it struck me. Macenna doesn’t need to copy other people to have some success, so why doing that?
And I agree with you, Elise should be much more known, she really deserves the success, she is working so hard. Probably the fact that she is in Denmark and not in USA or England may have an impact? I don’t know…

@@borednow She also used to love her cottage in Texas and now she seems to not care for it at all. I’m wondering what happened to change so abruptly. I understand that she was exhausted by the work she did in the kitchen but it is so strange to stop just before finishing a project. There are a lot of things that I don’t understand anymore on her channels.

Macenna you’ve given me the confidence to do this. I’m going to get a large tile and make a table top! So excited to do it and by the way I’m older than your mama and I’ve never done a DIY!
I mosaicked my bathroom countertop. It was formica and couldn’t afford to replace it at the time so I roughed it up with a heavy duty sand paper, set the broken tiles and then grouted and it’s still going strong 20 years later. Added bonus was I didn’t pay for any of the tile. Went to a tile store and asked if they had any samples or throw away onesies they would just give me and I was surprised they gave me a large selection of whites, tans, cream, etc enough for a double vanity, and the countertop turned out so nice and interesting, with a lot of added texture

I bought saucers alone that matched cups I already had because those had been sold without matching saucers. I also have used chipped China bought at flea market if the chips are small and not noticeable. I just wash it in bleach water first.

They came out beautiful. To make out door pieces, glue your pieces onto whatever and then use appropriate grout and seal. I did a large wooden serving tray with broken China. Great for carrying your dining items outdoors. When not in use I do a table scape inside of the tray and it lives on my dining table. Fun project.
I have so missed this type of DIY'S. This was a really good one. Don't get me wrong, I've loved all the Reno videos, but these are so great too.
What a wonderful project😊. If you would like more of these vases in the future, I recommend the hand tools for cutting china. You can cut as big as you want and with pattern precision. Much easier and less waste 😊 xxxx

15:08 - I use trays a lot in my house: to carry drinks and snacks, for gathering small items while straightening up, and for carrying small DIY supplies while I’m moving a project from room to room. I think this project would be perfect for a mosaic tray with resin!
