I actually am picking up my paint for my kitchen cabinets today.🖌️ I had paint swatches on the cabinets for weeks. I kept moving them around from upper to lower cabinets during different times of the day. This is a big project for me. I just turned 61 and I have some mild mobility issues. Thanks MaCenna for inspiring me.🌺😀❤️

I had never heard of Mackenzie Childs before watching this video….then I saw my teapot flash in the pic you showed. I ran to the kitchen to look at the brand and sure enough, Mackenzie Childs. I had no idea that this was anything super special, it was just a really beautiful Christmas present my husband got me for our first Christmas after our wedding 5 years ago! I guess I better make sure he knows I appreciate it!

My sister made a great point to me when she was designing her dream kitchen. The triangle is for one-person kitchens - so design the kitchen for two or maybe even three people to work in the kitchen and not be on top of each other. With this in mind, I think your fridge is in a great place because it won't create a build up of people. People will be able to go to it from any angle. Plus you can grab what you need and put it all on the island then take it to the sink, you're island serves as a second person.

Having a central fridge is a pain if you have family helping themselves to drinks and snacks while you are trying to cook, and getting in your way

Just a thought. I previously had a walk in pantry in my kitchen. After remodeling the kitchen, I tore out the walk in and installed a pantry section of my new cabinets. I used pull out drawers and I have more storage space than I had with the closet and accessibility works great. Being able to use the full space and not having loss due to studding out the walls made a big difference in storage capacity. I have vaulted ceilings so I could use the height and I left areas on top for larger appliances (mixers, juicers,etc.).

I agree. While a walk in or step in sounds cool, when your limited in space a beautiful floor to ceiling pantry cabinet system is just as fabulous. Have a enough space to stow the small appliances so they don’t sit out on the counter would be a selling point for me. So maybe keep that in mind.

      @thinkingbout 10 месяцев назад +4

I think that, too. Also if she'd put in a walk in pantry she'd take away from the open feel of the kitchen and maybe had to make the island smaller to still have good walkways around the pantry.

My sister, an interior designer, did what you did in her new-to-her house. She put in 2 pantry cabinets with some pull-out trays. It's a better use of space than the dead space in the center of a walk-in pantry. My dad built my pantries in the wall stub space in my kitchen. One section is single can depth. It's perfect, obviously, for cans, but works great for spices, too. The other section is deep enough for cereal boxes. So a pantry doesn't need to be deep to be extremely functional.

My husband and I purchased an old farm house that I loved. We had a big discussion about the location of the refrigerator. He wanted it in the kitchen and I wanted it in the sunroom/ laundry room, (which was huge and next to the kitchen) to make room for a larger stove (vintage Wedgewood) , he gave in and it was fine and actually more convenient. It gave a less crowded look and was great when I grocery shopped and needed into the fridge, it also made a lot less traffic in the kitchen area. We adjusted to this location quickly. My point being you don’t need to follow traditional placement of anything.

My kitchen now, designed by mother (I'm living in her last house) has a big area with three walls and a good sized peninsula - sink & dishwasher on the long wall, stove on one of the "short" ones, and endless counters running all the way around and onto the peninsula. On the other side of the peninsula, she left a walkway and then an adjoining breakfast room. The refrigerator was just off the kitchen in an alcove she'd designed next to a pantry along the wall of the short, wide hall going to the kitchen from the dining room and family room. It was just outside and roughly across that hallway from the opening into the kitchen from the peninsula. It worked perfectly so people could be in and out of the fridge without bothering anybody working in the kitchen, but it was really just steps away from the rest of the triangle. I LOVE this kitchen!! She was a lot like your mom in that they built several houses and she re-designed all of them to suit her and for best use of the space. She was particularly good at kitchens, IMO.
Wherever you out the fridge will become natural to you as long as it's in reasonable proximity.

I agree! Our fridge is in the utility room, next to the kitchen. Previous owners had an undercounter fridge in the kitchen (and then extra fridge freezer somewhere..) but it's so small, and the bending! No thank you! Works great for us, more space in kitchen and no need for a huge fridge cupboard door. Plus it's easy for anyone to access while other things are going on.
I think as long as you're not walking back and forth carrying things, particularly wet or dirty things? Then you're good. We replaced the old fridge with a pullout bin so now have sink, dishwasher and bins in a row 😊

Hi! I've been watching you for 2+ years. Just finished this vlog and have a couple of suggestions for your kitchen. Research English (British} and/or French pantry design. I think you could be able to build a glass and panel pantry in the corner without losing the window. With your knowledge and skill set, you can build cabinetry and shelves without major wall renov. Also, investigate drawer refrigerators/freezers along your wall cabinetry. That way you are not placing a huge fridge in that corner (which it will not fit without major wall renov. Put your existing fridge in the garage for extra and/or long term food storage. I think your house is an English cottage (California) design. I used to live in LA for 7 years but born/raised in Chicago. My family is in architectural but both parent s born in LA. Good luck and cannot wait to find out what you deicide.

Excellent point. If you're planning on staying forever make it what you want it to be for yourself. We moved a few times as my husband was transferred and we always knew we'd be selling in a few years so we thought of resale every time. This house is 36 years old, and we knew we were staying and suited ourselves. No regrets... Except more pantry space! 😊

From a practicality and re-sale standpoint, I've previously suggested adding a small, front closet in current space occupied by the fridge, facing into the front room for outerwear, add'l shelf storage for misc, etc. The front door is the primary access to the home and should have some feature for storing jackets, etc of residents and guests, perhaps vac, broom. Practicality also supports moving the entrance to the kitchen immediately adjacent to the dining table rather than toward back of house...although my preference would be for a large opening (however, you've said you don't want open floor plan). If you're really pushing for max storage, the island may need some and not just be 'table' style as you've previously considered.

I've been seeing a lot of beautiful millwork "wall pantries" on the renovation videos I've been watching and fewer and fewer walk in pantries (unless they are for huge new build, mansion sized homes). I loved the inspiration photo you shared with us that showed the cabinet wall with the door opening in it. There might be an opportunity to make part of that wall deeper and have the fridge and pantry integrated with the rest of the floor to ceiling storage. Just a thought. Absolutely amazed with what you've done in both your homes!

We just finished our kitchen renovation. After tonnes and tonnes of thought (because you know its our kitchen and we aren't planning on doing it again in a few years).
We have an island that is just storage. Then backing onto that is our main bench if you will. It houses our sink and stove/oven. Then we have a butlers that runs off them both (its not huge but its big enough), it houses our fridge and small appliances like coffee machine.
I decided that, yes it wasnt a triangle, but it didnt need to be. If we were comfortable walking around the space and it was functional for us. That's all it had to be.
For weeks on end, I would work around our imaginary kitchen, pretending that I was using it. To reassure me that it was the right thing.
Now that the kitchen is finished, we are incredibly happy.
Honestly, do what you feel is correct and right for you and Romeo.

It shows off the beautiful quartzite stone we chose like a piece of art in the kitchen 😊 Friends of ours have a larger island, have a prep sink and wish they hadn’t done it. Just a heads up on dark cabinets... when they collect dust, it's much more noticeable on dark cabinets vs lighter colored ones. Ours used to be black and I hated that I needed to clean them so frequently. When we painted them white, I loved how open our space felt and that my cabinets didn't constantly look dusty.

25:51 this draft matches how my current kitchen is set up and I LOVE it. The fridge actually doesn’t feel like you’re super away from the sink and I have a large 5’ x 7’ island. I wouldn’t add a small prep sink because it’s so nice to have an uninterrupted island for food prep, food out for entertaining, area for bar stools, etc. Another great thing about the fridge sort of being out of the middle of the kitchen is that someone can have the doors open and it doesn’t interrupt any flow around the island. Highly recommend this plan you came up with!

Put the stove and oven in the island so it’s across from the sink facing the same way it faces now. So when you’re cooking all you have to do is turn around and there’s your sink. Put the fridge to the left of that in the opposite direction as the windows. If you put the stove over on that other wall you will be standing in the walkway when you’re cooking. I also wouldn’t get rid of the window. Those windows add so much charm and character. And they are symmetrical! Keep!

Regarding having a Pantry: Yes, a pantry is extremely usually, both for additional storage, & a place perhaps to keep some kitchen applications you don’t use often, but, it does Not need to be a walk-in pantry, or a step-in pantry. Remember, as long as you have plenty of storage in it, “that” is what is important. Keep it simply and function Macenna, then, if you have room, upscale it.

The best designed kitchens I've seen divide it into zones just like a restaurant kitchen: all food/pantry/fridge/prep space together, cooking stuff together, and sink/dishes together. that way you can delegate different tasks without everyone bumping into each other all the time.

I have another idea. It's for a pantry in your current kitchen. Well, not exactly in your kitchen... but you said y'all don't use the dining room at all. So until you start major reno, attach cabinets to the wall in the dining room that's behind the range. Stack them floor to ceiling. I use all uppers because deeper cabinets make it hard to find things. I call it a "wall of talls" or, alternatively, a "pantry wall," and I love them! By selecting and arranging a variety of heights and widths (but all 1' deep), it can look very vintage, butlers-pantry-esque. And you would be shocked at the amount of storage they provide while only taking up 1' x (whatever wall length) of floor space. And you could reuse some of them when you reno.

Dear MaCenna some other ideas for broken dishes are flower pots & bird houses. I have some darling ones in storage since we sold our home. I gave away a charming cement item that looked liked a stepping stone but it had a small sauce bowl in the middle of it. Using a deeper mold a cute birdbath could be made using a larger bowl. I have never seen lamp bases with broken dishes but I think they would be delightful. Many blessings & traveling mercies…🌺💜🌺🙏🌺💜🌺

I agree with some of your other commenters, I feel like having a beautiful pantry cabinet wall that has great pull out storage and it’s super customized is just as good if not better than a walk-in pantry. Because walk-ins always have at least two walls that are almost unusable unless they are really large because you need one wall for the door and another wall for the door to swing onto. Also, if you’re worried about the refrigerator being too far from the sink you could always install a drawer refrigerator near the sink as well since you do have a lot of cabinet space. perhaps you could keep veggies or things that you want to access quickly well near the sink. Can’t wait to see how everything turns out!❤

    Hello!
About your refrigerator dilemma, have you considered an all undercounted drawer refrigerator style? They seem to come as counter depth and panel ready too. Installing multiple sets in an island or along the wall could be clever, unique and very European in style. I did a quick search online and they have some at Home Depot here in Canada. And there are freezer versions as well. Just a suggestion 😊 Thanks !

About the cabinets looking yellow maybe you could do with some lighting around that area maybe above or something subtle to just introduce more light to the darker areas when the suns at a certain angle?? ❤

I think you could easily have a decent pantry in that corner. It’s honestly better if the shelves aren’t too deep and you could do shelves all the way around both walls from floor to ceiling, possibly with an appliance shelf or store those things you don’t use as much on the top shelf. Work out what you want to store in there and customise the shelf heights accordingly. If you squared it off and made it it’s own little room, it could work really well ☺️

I really enjoy it when you take us along your planning process and share your thoughts! It's something I appreciate about your channel in general! Oh, you know what would be fun? You could do what How to Renovate a Chateau (Without Killing your Partner) did and share the measurements of your kitchen space with your followers, and let them have a go at planning? Then make a video about your faves! (Also, check out their kitchen if you haven't already. It's gorgeous!)

In your kitchen design. Coming from a cook, your island will be the "drop" spot. So you get thongs out of fridge, put on island, walk around to sink to wash, back to island for prep, then to oven/stove for cooking. Makes sense to me.

Another cracking video. We painted our lower cabinets in railings by F&B. 100% sand between each layer where you can
Agreed a walk in pantry is the new upcoming space people now want. Like how most expect a garage. The space will work really well especially if you can move the entry way too.
You don’t have to use the triangle method anymore as long as it works for you. Only thing I would recommend is either side of your sink to have a dishwasher and trash can close by.
Fridge by your oven will work super well, less steps to prep areas and also to cook. X

Could you do a hidden fridge like you did in the cottage in the corner to the right of the sink? Then you could have that continue into the wall of cabinets that you were hoping to do, it would just be a few less cabinets? That way you'd have your fridge close to the sink where you can wash/prep food without having to run across the whole room 🤔

So many options for the kitchen! What if you put your fridge and oven on the wall with the door into the “dining”. Then the excellent pantry inspiration pic would be on the wall you see when you walk in??? Behind your island. Just a thought! Not sure how it would fit but worth looking at 😊

For example we in the Netherlands some time have our fridge and freezer separate in lower cabinets and built in like you did in the cottage. So curious to see what you come up with. Whatever you come up with will be beautiful. But you don't need a walk in pantry if the house doesn't allow it. A wall of cabinets and drawers will do the trick. We bought a 1980s house and it had an awkward, narrow walk in pantry eating away at family room space. We took the wall down and added counter space for coffee station, standing mixer, and tea station. Under the counter top there are drawers, and cabinets above. Everything is esthetically pleasing and functional at the same time. Wish I could send you pictures.

I'm currently on my 2nd kitchen with only lower cabinets and I love it: it's calm and spacious. Your kitchen area would do great with lower cabinets on the outside walls. Idea: look at refridgerator options for lower cabinets; maybe the ones with drawers/2 next to eachother if needed. That would eliminate your bulky fridge problem.

I would do all drawers on the bottom cabinets, much easier to get things from ….instead of bending down and digging towards the cabinets with shelves… cabinet above the fridge, make the shelf inside a u shape…. That way you can see everything that’s there…as far as the bottom cabinets, forget any lazy susans ….do corner drawers

For your kitchen design… just a thought for the triangle of stove-sink-fridge… what about the wall that has all of the cabinets. You have the island for prep space so you may not need all that counter top. OR you could consider fridge drawers in the island and a smaller fridge you can fit in another space closer to the sink.

Put the fridge where the dishwasher is (ish give or take some inches) move the dishwasher to the other side of the sink. That also keeps your water in one space.

I would make the oven next to the sink, leaving about 40" of free worktop in between because it is very convenient to have them close and in line when cooking, maybe you could consider positioning the oven where the current kitchen door is. Imagine just washing and cutting vegetables next to the sink, then just slide the cutting board across the worktop to the range without risking dropping something on the floor. I wouldn't worry about the refrigerator as in the end you just open it to take out the ingredients, then everything happens around the sink and oven!

Yeah, people make it sound like you need to access the fridge the entire time that you’re cooking. I take out everything that I need for a meal, wash everything, cut and cook everything, eat and don’t access the fridge again until it’s time to put the leftovers away.🤷🏼‍♀️

My parent's home is layed out nearly identical to how you're planning to do your kitchen. I don't think I have noticed the distance between the sink and the fridge, mostly due to use using the island as the mid point to gather "all the things" to prep there.
