    I also did a little creative swap with another one of my trucks before I sold it!!
    This truck is a 1988 International S1754 Scissor Lift / Dump Truck that has a Navistar DT360 Diesel engine in it and a Spicer manual transmission!
    I've Got BIG plans for this truck, so you'll be seeing quite of bit of it in the future!

    I feel your pain. My dad and I have a 1600 with a dt466. He was having some welding on the dump bed done and the welding shop didn’t have the parking brake off. Kept stalling the truck trying to move. Soooo their approach was more power - floored and and let the clutch out. Totally split the 5-speed in half right below the shifter. Oil, gears, bearings all on the shop floor.

  • @davidtaylor4832
    @davidtaylor4832 2 года назад +24

    The reason why that relatively small transmission brake caused so much damage is that it's braking effort is multiplied by the reduction ratio of the final drive crown wheel and pinion. All transmission brakes work that way, which is why they should never be used for deceleration, only parking, unless the power-train has some hefty mountings, even then, there's a danger of causing some transmission wind-up, that's opposing forces locked into the system. Check the temperature of that drum after a good run. Good video. Cheers.

    The new oil seal is upside down. Spring side always faces the inside oil side. You should never be able to see the spring from the outside of any oil filled housing. Your transmission is going to leak worse than before once it reaches it's max temp. 👈🤓👈 Before 4:41 After 24:01

    • @DoRC

      In this case you're correct but sometimes the seal would go the other direction depending on what it's purpose is. If it is designed to keep dust and debris out then it would go with the spring facing the outside. It's not super common but it does happen sometimes.

    • @allanclark1465

    • @SalvageWorkshop
      @SalvageWorkshop  2 года назад +7

      Yeah maybe, but I installed it in the same direction as the one it replaced... I guess we'll see if it leaks, and if so I'll replace it then... for now it'll do more harm flipping it around, especially since it's not under pressure or fully surrounded with oil at all times.

    a trick for making heavy tires easier to remove and install is to use a d handle scoop shovel. you can use it as a lever to lift the tire, and as a carrier sled to move them into place. it's saved me a lot of fighting them on and off of things over the years.

    Fun issue with this style of brake - if the driveshaft fails. My dad and brother were driving a mid-late 70's international set up as a water truck from a fire call one night, and had to go up a short but steep hill (10-12% grade). About 1/3-1/2 way up, either a u-joint snapped or the entire drive shaft gave out when dad shifted, the remains whipped around at high speed and ripped out the air lines and wiring. Now they're going backwards with a full tank of water, steep drops, with a house on one side, gas station on the other and a motel beyond a stop sign at the bottom. By the grace of God, they got it to the bottom of the hill despite no lights at night, before the truck was totally uncontrollable and ended up rolling it. Definitely only a parking brake and not an emergency brake.

    10:52, you're partially correct. That output housing (or tail shaft housing) will push on that snap ring on the bearing toward the main case and take up a lot of that end play. Then the yoke nut will pull the shaft out, keeping that bearing pulled against the tail shaft housing. They're ball bearings, not taper bearings so some end play is expected.

    What happened to old red? I was following it and then you stopped showing the rebuild

    With those wheel keepers the leave the nuts on loosely and then hit the keepers and that way it will stop anyone from getting hit when they fly off

    If you plug in a 2 speed differential you will only loose half your revs. The trucks of this age I’ve seen fitted with spider hubs are 8 ton or more load capacity were fitted with 2 speed diffs.

    Matt, we need to get you a set of decent work gloves.
    I like to “feel” things with my skin but some of these large parts are going to hurt your hands 😂

    I call those Dayton wheels "cultavater wheels" and that is where they need to be, on a cultavater!

    Seems you intend to use this , which is good . Was worried that all of your "rescued" vehicles would merely end up moldering away in your older friends junkyard .

      Oh I intend to use everything I rescue, and NOTHING of mine will end up in that junkyard... I'd rather pass a project on to someone else rather than let it just rot away like stuff at that junk yard... If anything I plan to rescue a few things out of that junkyard!

      @@SalvageWorkshop So glad to hear that , too many youtube sites are merely about "will it start?" . You'd used the things you'd fixed previously so good , that's great !

    Nice video. You have to tell us what your little mistake ended up setting you back. I think may have installed that oil seal backwards, but otherwise nice job.

    Put a winch in the front of the bed so you can pull things onto the flat bed

    You’re fortunate you didn’t need the emergency brake on a big hill. I doubt the aluminum housing could have withstood anything but a parking brake load with shattering. Silver lining is that the steel housing will hold the load you need it to hold.

    The original three speed transmission that would have been in my 1963 FJ40 had the parking brake on the transmission. The rear didn't have this. I'm going with a 5 speed in mine, so I'll also need to change out the rear so that I will have a parking brake.

    Good upload. Good idea to do a series on this truck. Your subscribers want uploads more often. Can we have an update on the fate of Old Red? Cheers from Oz mate.
