I had a smaller apartment, 1 room, studio style, in Rathmines Lower when I was 30 (42 now), I adored it. Got me out of a depressive spell (I had been living with my parents during a college course, feeling lost, adrift at 30). It was affordable back then, €410 a month. The location was wonderful. I took classes, got a job, found my feet and met my partner. We bought an apartment outside of Dublin a few years later- it has actual bedrooms, a loft, a small balcony etc, so its definitely an upgrade, but I still miss that little spot in Rathmines that held me and helped me so much. I wish all young people had the option and access to *affordable* rental spaces so they could live independently, to have that breathing space
Thank you for sharing this story! I totally agree with you about young people having the opportunity to access affordable rental spaces so they can live independently. When I first moved into my little studio apartment back in 2013 I think it was €610 a month. It was tiny but I loved it, and it's the only time in my life I lived by myself. I ended up staying in that apartment for about 6 years (my partner moved in after about a year) and have so many fond memories. You'd be surprised how many people we hosted in that space over the years 😅. Once we got a pull out couch we'd all cram into the space when people would visit from Canada. The flat was small, but very special.
Location, location, location! Plus, small means less cleaning (although you do have to be more organised & tidy, but that's preferable to cleaning for me). Dublin is a great city, but like so many other place, the housing crisis is so unfair.
My God, things have changed in Rathmines over the last 45 years, and thank God for that. When I lived there, the damp was crawling up the walls, the wall paper needed to be sellotaped back up, we shared a bathroom with 3 other flats. You have it made girl. Times have changed for the better. Nicely decorated, well done. You sound Canadian, I heard you say "layout", the "out" part made me think, she is Canadian.
Those places still exist. Rentals are awful in Dublin, You just have to pay way more for a semi decent place. And for one person alone it's impossible to afford the rent.
So funny you think it's Nova Scotia or PEI, I bet it's because I've lived in Ireland for so long so I have a little more of what we deem an East Coast twang now 😂 I'm from Ottawa, so Eastern Canada but not quite that East haha.
Really nice apartment! Lots of good inspiration. I love your bedding and yes thermal currains will help. You can also get a stand alone air cooler that you put water in. Not as good as air conditioner but def helps.
Thanks for watching my tour of my small Dublin apartment! I'm curios, what's more important to you? Small place in a great location or big place in a commuter location? I'd love to know!
Smaller and nearer the city centre, ideally! Enjoyed your tour, thanks for uploading it. I'm currently looking for a place myself and saw a place with 1 extra room further out - but there's only 1 bus every hour 🤷♀️ Rathmines is a great location.
Your flat is lovely and looks really well organised. You mentioned no drawer space in the bedroom and that the wardrobes are dark. What I have done in the past is use a hanging canvas ‘shelf’ organiser in the wardrobe for storing bulky jumpers, jeans, t shirts etc which frees up hanging space for longer items, baskets at the bottom of the wardrobe for underwear etc. Also, buying stick on battery spot lights on the ‘ceiling’ of the wardrobe to light the space so you can find what you are looking for. Thank you for the tour, this is the first video of yours I have seen and will stay tuned for more 😊 best wishes from the uk.
Thank you! And thank you for your comment! I actually recently got some of those battery operated lights, I got the stick on led strips which has helped with the top area of the wardrobe (and looks cool haha). I'm going to be doing the ol' wardrobe changeover so taking the jumpers out of my storage suitcases and putting away the summer clothes so your advice is coming at a great time!
Very interesting video, great information share. Love the apartment, very welcoming. You have made smart use of space while still having out the items you love. Hope you are very happy there.❤
Thanks very much for the thorough and thoughtful tour. Do you feel comfortable sharing the rent or perhaps a realistic price range for small, centrally licated 1-beds. Have very happy memories of living in Rathmines 30 years ago and it's to know it still has charity shops, lots of convenient grocery shops, etc.
You obviously had a nice place 30 years ago, can't say the same for 45 years ago, it was "damp central", we didn't realise at the time how bad our "flats" were, they were pretty bad, I am thankful that "things" have changed for the better.
@@smiley9872 I totally hear you. It was very hit and miss definitely. I don't think my flat was that great either and I'm glad standards have improved. Just always liked Rathmines in general and it was more being in Rathmines, lots of amenties and close to city center that I liked than the accommodation I had. Mainly curious to know what price range for a flat in Rathmines like one in this video is these days.
@@seamusmullarkey5996 I would love to know that too, I bet it would give us both a coronary! Not that I can't afford a coronary now either! Let's see what the budget brings, more hardship for us middle of the road folk, no doubt.
Thanks for your comment! I'd be curious to see how much has changed in Rathmines in 30 years. The rent for this flat is €1250 month, heating is included and electric is separate. I consider this to be a good deal for Rathmines. There are some studio apartments that are being listed from €1500 😬 (average price for a small studio with single bed seems to be 1300 and for a one bedroom apartment 2000). The thing is there are more affordable places that become available but they go incredibly quickly so you really have to be watching and be ready to move quickly. When I first moved in to a studio in Rathmines back around 2013 it was €610 a month so yes times have changed haha.
Idea for bedroom storage of the clothing items you mentioned. One, if you can hang things I would utilize upper wall space and buy some type of shelving that can hold baskets or a cupboard that closes. If you aren’t able to mount things on the walls, I would look at IKEA for their shoe storage cabinets (Hemnes, They have a very thin profile and wouldn’t stick out into the space too much. It wouldn’t be a lot of space, but would definitely be great to house underwear, socks, rolled up T-shirts etc.
Thank you for your comment! Yes unfortunately at this stage I'm not really allowed to mount things on the walls. I'll look into the Hemnes line! Thanks!
I love Rathmines, I have lived here for the past 2 years and it is a great location. I might get an apartment in Ashtown next year and while it's a great location, I'll definitely going to miss Rathmines.
Rathmines just keeps getting better and better, doesn't it? We're spoiled for choice with bars, cafes, restaurants, grocery stories, TWO cinemas, charity shops, gyms, etc! Ashtown will be great too thought. Depending on where you're at in life it might be nice to get away from the hustle and bustle 👍
Loved the tour Grace and look forward to seeing more of Dublin and learning about being an expat in Ireland. Hi, good video, I really like to see how people can arrange themselves in small apartments. I would like to hear how much the apartment costs per month?
I love mirrors and have many different shapes and sizes and what a difference they make in light reflection and brightness! Also I bought a couple of “fairy” light strings for under 6 dollars from Amazon, which plug in and can be left on all the time using almost NO electricity and they add such a nice light and whimsy to our house. I see many places a mirror would be good in your little place. ☺️☺️ I need to lose a few pounds so when you showed your shower stall I told my husband I would need a girdle just to get in it, haha. Just want to say beware of flats that claim heating is ‘included’ in the rent. My friend lived in one of these during Covid (working from home) and the landlord only allowed one hour of heat per day even in the dead of winter. She was wearing gloves and winter coats indoors and spending £££ on electricity to keep space heaters running so she didn’t freeze. Almost got frostbite in her toes while sleeping. Be careful what you sign up for!
Thank you so much for showing us real life is like for a person average salary is like! No AC in your area :( :( Heat gets set by the landlord - no way! But in the US landlord’s definitely have control of what date your heat gets turned on in the fall.
Thanks for your comment! Thankfully, Ireland doesn't get too hot in the summer so the no A/C thing isn't a big deal for most of the year. I ended up getting a small "a/c" unit from Amazon. Essentially a small fan but it has a compartment for cold water. I put it on the windowsill facing the bed and it definitely helped on those hot nights!
