      Modern Vintage Gamer - Hi, does Friendtech still sell these & are they available as an upgrade kit? Great video and thank you for the info. I would love to upgrade my 2 original X-Boxes with this setup. Is the RAM upgrade difficult?

      CyDragonGM - Baldur's Gate - Dark Alliance; A superb official D&D hack&slash action rpg on PS2, XB, & GC. It is really high production quality with tight gameplay, epic soundtrack, & quality voicework. There is no port of this specific Baldur's Gate game on PC; The PC games in the series use alot of mouse clicking. This console version gives direct control of your character, not clicking orders. The console specific sequel was very bland in every way. I recommend you check it out. Dark Alliance has a ridiculously cool unlockable when you beat the game too. Also, It is co-op 2 players.

      I wouldn't call this a bad video, it's good, but i'm not sure whether it's a worthwhile improvement? You're running through the same bullet points; surely some questions would have arisen in the meanwhile?

      4 years later and even though the Steam Deck isn't a console, it's a huge fucking refreshment compared to today's console and/or handheld market.
      Yeah, I know, it's essentially a portable PC but come on, Valve essentially allows you to do whatever you want with it. And the repairability is astounding!

      If anyone has the older 1ghz trusty it is '3F 42 0F' instead.

      Trohs Wehttam An Arcade emulator. you could search more info on google

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 6 лет назад +3

      MAME = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator. It's basically imo the best multiple system emulator to be created. It emulates all the chips used within arcade machines and since many systems used many of the same chips, it enables MAME to support the whole range of arcade machines - pretty much anything that was ever in an arcade can be emulated by MAME.
      In relation to this video and the CPU / RAM upgrades - more processing power and RAM means better emulation performance on games that may lose frames or have stuttery sound at the standard 733Mhz, and the RAM opens up support for some of the larger games that a standard XBOX might not be able to emulate due to RAM limitations.

    • @GadgetUK164
      @GadgetUK164 6 лет назад +1

      BGA I think! Pain for the average person imo - I would struggle with it for sure. To do something like that properly you need an IR bed or something to pre-heat the board, hot air to remove the chip (preferably with a proper hood - not just a cheap hot air rework station), and then you need to remove the solder from the board, get a stencil of the right type of that CPU, reball the replacement CPU and fit it with hot air. It is certainly not an easy process for the inexperienced. Personally I don't see the point in risking an XBOX to attempt the mod myself. Fitting additional RAM is easy though in comparison - I might do a video on that at some point.

      I personally thought the thermal compound looked a bit heavy on both the CPU and the GPU....133F idle seems pretty high to me. If it were under load and it were 133F I wouldn't think to much of it. I know similar CPU's back in the day in a standard PC setup ran around 104f idle. Thing is on those console heatsinks in my experience they don't make the most snug fit with the chips in some cases, so if you have a bit to much compound on the chip there isn't enough pressure to thin it out enough to make good contact between the cpu and HS.

      @Don-h4d 4 года назад +1

      Yeah 40C was not that bad as idle temp even if not that efficient considering that's a weak Celeron CPU, indeed very popular as the cheaper alternative to the late Pentium III/early Pentium 4, but outdated compared to the PC gaming already using early Pentium 4 above 2Ghz clock speed.

    +Modern Vintage Gamer -- Hey! This was an awesome vid -- it's super cool that you've chosen such an interesting, uncommon topic to share with us!
    Question about the way you applied thermal paste to your processor before re-seating the heatsink: I've always thought (and was taught) that when applying thermal paste, you should put a small amount (roughly the circumference of a dime) of the paste in the center of the chip and then let the bottom surface of the heatsink force the paste to spread out evenly along the the surface of the chip when they're pressed together, which supposedly allows for optimal thermal transfer AND helps ensure the strongest possible bond between the processor and the heatsink body. I was taught that this method was preferred over hand-spreading the thermal paste because hand-spreading could cause an issue where some of the spots on the surface of the chip, when mated with the heatsink, could end up with more paste on them than others, which could result in less-than-ideal thermal transfer between the chip and the heatsink, as well as sub-optimal physical bonding between them. *Therefore, I'm curious as to why you chose to hand-spread the thermal paste over the surface of the chip instead?* Is there some benefit to that technique I'm not aware of?
    Thanks so much!

    I was really big into modding my Xbox back in the day. I installed a xenium mod chip on my 1.0 Xbox as well as a 300gb hd. I hit a memory wall with a bunch of Mame games, so I used a service that upgraded the memory to 128gb. I forget what company I used or what it cost, but the upgrade was amazing... all of the previous games that failed to work due to memory issues now worked fine. I still use this Xbox all the time, it’s such an amazing emulation station. Anyone that wants a fun modding project should seriously look into these machines. The emulators developed on this platform are some of the best I’ve ever used.

    I winced when I saw how you cleaned up the leaked capacitor's electrolytic fluid.
    Just use a q-tip and some distilled white vinegar, then let it air dry. That'll both neutralize the electrolytic fluid, as well as cleaning it up.

    • @edale2
      @edale2 6 лет назад +4

      Also, spreading the thermal paste before putting the heatsink on results in air bubbles. Put a dab in the center of the CPU, placement of the heatsink will spread the thermal paste evenly and air bubble free.
      You can see this directly by taking 2 microscope slides, and trying both application methods out, spreading the thermal paste before putting sandwiching it between the slides will lead to very noticeable air bubbles, whereas placing a dot, and spreading it by sandwiching it between the slides will leave no air bubbles.
      That said, there are a few very think thermal pastes that you actually do need to spread manually, but those are pretty rare.

    Hey. Would you be willing to share the custom CPU adapter board design with the ASSEMbler game forum guys? A few years back I sparked up interest in this console but seeing as how rare they are none there could get their hands on the custom board to clone it so we can recreate this beast system. Sure we have modern 1.4 GHz CPU mods but they just aren't the same as this one with the slight overclock and speed switch. If high quality pictures were shared of the adapter board (assuming it can be removed without destroying the console) were shared then someone could remake it and offer them for people who want this capability on their systems. The media key is not needed as it was really just a lockout system and thus not needed. The RAM mod is easy as anyone who can do SMD soldering can pull the mod off.
    We just need that board to exactly copy what Friendtech did for the CPU mod back in the day.

  • @RDTengineered
    @RDTengineered 5 лет назад +1

    I was in college when these were being made and wanted one. We mostly used the XBMC and wanted 720p compatibility but also did some gaming on it for exclusive/nonPC titles. By the time I had the money for it FriendTech stopped making them. I hope Xbox soon has "standard" cpu/gpu/apus/ram again so they are up-gradable like this. Even if it requires removal and soldering chips to the boards.

    I'm also a "spread a thin layer of arctic silver" type of of guy, I guess some people just use a dollop and let the pressure of the heat sink spread the paste out...

    • @SvDKILLSWITCH
      @SvDKILLSWITCH 6 лет назад +3

      Ultimately it really depends on the mounting pressure of the heatsink, though neither way is inherently bad. For laptops and graphics cards I like to make sure to spread the paste around first, but for consumer desktop CPUs it's usually not a problem with a dot or a line in the middle.

    • @krypton1260
      @krypton1260 6 лет назад +4

      Prespreading is bad, as you have no way to know which parts of the heatsink require more thermal compound and which parts need less. You're also trapping air between the heatsink which doesn't conduct heat. No thermal compound manufacturer recommends prespreading their grease, except the liquid metal ones.

    • @GiSWiG
      @GiSWiG 6 лет назад +2

      Sometimes you should pre-spread on the heatsink, especially if the copper heat pipes make direct contact on the CPU. There are usually gaps between the pipes so just putting on the thermal paste and letting the pressure spread it, doesn't work.

    • @Ruzarik
      @Ruzarik 6 лет назад +47

      I've built a few dozen PC's in my lifetime, you don't have to spread the paste at all, in fact it's best if you don't.
      Simply put a rice grain sized bead of paste down, and evenly press the heatsink onto the CPU, the pressure will perfectly spread itself.
      If you pre-spread it, you create an uneventful surface (no matter how hard you try it will be ever so slightly uneven) and this could easily create air bubbles between the heatsink and thermal paste once installed.
      To test this theory, install it with both methods and remove the heatsink by sliding it off in one direction as opposed to lifting it vertically or twisting it. You will see streaks with the pre-spread paste because of it's unevenness, and should see smooth swipe with the pressure-spread method.

      I would assume that was the default setting for the program and he was fine with it and/or used to seeing Xbox temp ranges in Fahrenheit. In any event, MVG is an Australian living in the US, so he's probably just as comfortable using either system - hell, even in Canada, we flip back and forth, measuring human weight in pounds and height in feet & inches, then turn around and use Celsius for temps and longer distances in kilometres.
      P.S. Thomas' system is good up to a point, though F = 32 + (C*1.8) would be more exact, and helpful in cases of colder than freezing - mind you, CPUs are usually hotter than freezing :)

    Complaining that the OG Xbox wasn't a media center is missing the point. It wasn't supposed to be a media center. I mean look what happened to the Xbox one after trying to be a media center. It kind of got stomped into the dirt. That's what made the Xbox 360 great. It was a solid console with good games and not too many unnecessary shit.
    I do think it would be cool to have 1 of these though. Still a lot of great Xbox games I want to play.

      Kos4Evr i think the xbox 360 is backwards compatible. Not sure though.

      Kos4Evr TBH, I think the number one turn off was the always online DRM.

      I think all people want is a great game console with possibly the basic means to watch videos, that xbox one launch was a disaster that MS never recovered from (not just the bad game library on launch but the needing internet 24/7 to not own a £550 piece of plastic, and having to buy 2nd hand games - these really damaged it's chances)

    There is an Xbox Revision that already has double the ram. It was one of the last models to be released. I actually own one. I can take pics and show it off. It's the version 1.6b(i know it's 1.6 but not sure on the B)

    btw, a buddy of mine has an early xbox classic beta model that really is just an matx pc, we used a similar cpu to this one(from another maker but made to work in nearly any 370 board), its also a 1.4ghz last gen p3 celeron, it has alot more ram then that though, 384(most we could get at the time), also unlike the release model, its video card was just an OEM geforce card, turned out we where able to replace the card with one that was quite a bit more powerful being the ultra version of the same gen chipset, the system is still pretty capable, it also came with windows 2k dual boot(full 2k) as well as a slew of extra software that was for dev and debugging, he released an image of the things drive online back in the day, as well as its bios, that where updated along with a software update, it got software updates till ms stopped supporting the xbox, and unlike release models, you really could rename alot of exe files to a dif extension and get them to run via the xbox software rather then windows, i keep telling him, when his wife makes him get rid of it, to bring it to me, dont dare throw it out... it around 2x as thick as a release xbox, and is really just an xbox like shell on an matx computer, really cool though to upgrade them like that.
    OH, another note, you can automate the rip and patch process, at least on his, it asks when you put a new game in if you want to play it or "install to hard drive", when it does an "install" it copies the whole game over and patches the title.
    the xbox was neat, i just wish they had used even more pc like hardware...hell just a couple ram slots in the normal unit would have been great...

    133f is 56c, which is actually very cool for a classic Xbox under load, suggesting the CPU is actually a lower TDP/more efficient CPU, which would also explain why it doesn't make the power supply explode.

    133 f is about 55 celcus. Nowhere near the danger zone

    • @FennecTECH
      @FennecTECH 6 лет назад

      Most temps are celcus. I don’t know what the danger zone for that chip is. But its likely arround 80 to 100c. I am comfortable anywhere below 90c on my devices. 100c is about the temp for slow but perminant damage. At 95c i cut the power to the system programmatically

      Locked just means it won’t break 60fps. Doesn’t mean it can’t dip below that.

    Nice, I could say that I’m very happy that I saw your videos and bought an OG Xbox again. I was playing 6th gen era consoles through emulators, mainly due to the fact that it was a hassle having to get the memory cards and inserting discs, but the Xbox OG doesn’t have that problem, since you can run everything off the HDD.
